A stochastic model for nondemolition continuous measurement in a quantum system is given. It is shown that the posterior dynamics, including a continuous collapse of the wave function, is described by a nonlinear stochastic wave equation. For a particle in an electromagnetic field it reduces the Schroedinger equation with extra imaginary stochastic potentials.
We present a compact experimental design for producing an arbitrarily large optical continuous-variable cluster state using just one single-mode vacuum squeezer and one quantum nondemolition gate. Generating the cluster state and computing with it happen simultaneously: more entangled modes become available as previous modes are measured, thereby making finite the requirements for coherence and stability even as the computation length increases indefinitely.
The Lindblad approach to continuous quantum measurements is applied to a system composed of a two-level atom interacting with a stationary quantized electromagnetic field through a dispersive coupling fulfilling quantum nondemolition criteria. Two schemes of measurements are examined. The first one consists in measuring the atomic electric dipole, which indirectly allows one to infer the photon distribution inside the cavity. The second one schematizes a measurement of photon momentum, which permits to describe the atomic level distribution. Decoherence of the corresponding reduced density mat…
We propose a technique to control the macroscopic collective nuclear spin of a Helium-3 vapor in the quantum regime using light. The scheme relies on metastability exchange collisions to mediate interactions between optically accessible metastable states and the ground-state nuclear spin, giving rise to an effective nuclear spin-light quantum nondemolition interaction of the Faraday form. Our technique enables measurement-based quantum control of nuclear spins, such as the preparation of spin-squeezed states. This, combined with the day-long coherence time of nuclear spin states in Helium-3, o…
We discuss the theory and experimental considerations of a quantum feedback scheme for producing deterministically reproducible spin squeezing. Continuous nondemolition atom number measurement from monitoring a probe field conditionally squeezes the sample. Simultaneous feedback of the measurement results controls the quantum state such that the squeezing becomes unconditional. We find that for very strong cavity coupling and a limited number of atoms, the theoretical squeezing approaches the Heisenberg limit. Strong squeezing will still be produced at weaker coupling and even in free space (t…
We give an explicit axiomatic formulation of the quantum measurement theory which is free of the projection postulate. It is based on the generalized nondemolition principle applicable also to the unsharp, continuous-spectrum and continuous-in-time observations. The "collapsed state-vector" after the "objectification" is simply treated as a random vector of the a posteriori state given by the quantum filtering, i.e., the conditioning of the a priori induced state on the corresponding reduced algebra. The nonlinear phenomenological equation of "continuous spontaneous localization" has been deri…
The time evolution of a squeezed coherent state conditioned by the results of a single and double heterodyne measurement is discussed. The mean values of quadratures as well as the dynamics of quadrature uncertainties have been obtained within the framework of the theory of continuous measurements based on filtration equations. It has been found that while the mean values depend on the measured noise, the uncertainties in the optical quadratures are deterministic. Explicit solutions for the latter have been provided. Finally, a time development of the squeeze parameter for the posterior squeez…
We show that continuous quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble is able to improve the precision of frequency estimation even in the presence of independent dephasing acting on each atom. We numerically simulate the dynamics of an ensemble with up to N = 150 atoms initially prepared in a (classical) spin coherent state, and we show that, thanks to the spin squeezing dynamically generated by the measurement, the information obtainable from the continuous photocurrent scales superclassically with respect to the number of atoms N. We provide evidence that such superclassical…
The phase estimation algorithm, which is at the heart of a variety of quantum algorithms, including Shor's factoring algorithm, allows a quantum computer to accurately determine an eigenvalue of an unitary operator. Quantum nondemolition measurements are a quantum mechanical procedure, used to overcome the standard quantum limit when measuring an observable. We show that the phase estimation algorithm, in both the discrete and continuous variable setting, can be viewed as a quantum nondemolition measurement.
The sum gate is the canonical two-mode gate for universal quantum computation based on continuous quantum variables. It represents the natural analogue to a qubit C-NOT gate. In addition, the continuous-variable gate describes a quantum nondemolition (QND) interaction between the quadrature components of two light fields. We experimentally demonstrate a QND sum gate, employing the scheme by R. Filip, P. Marek, and U.L. Andersen [\pra {\bf 71}, 042308 (2005)], solely based on offline squeezed states, homodyne measurements, and feedforward. The results are verified by simultaneously satisfying t…
A stochastic model of a continuous nondemolition observation of a free quantum Brownian motion is presented. The nonlinear stochastic wave equation describing the posterior dynamics of the observed quantum system is solved in a Gaussian case for a free particle of mass m. It is shown that the dispersion of the wave packet does not increase to infinity like for the free unobserved particle but tends to the finite limit.
The problem of time operator in quantum mechanics is revisited. The unsharp measurement model for quantum time based on the dynamical system-clock interaction, is studied. Our analysis shows that the problem of the quantum time operator with continuous spectrum cannot be separated from the measurement problem for quantum time.
In this work a family of quantum nondemolition variables for the case of a particle caught in a Paul trap is obtained. Afterwards, in the context of the so called restricted path integral formalism, a continuous measuring process for this family of parameters is considered, and then the corresponding propagators are calculated. In other words, the time evolution of a particle in a Paul trap, when the corresponding quantum nondemolition parameter is being continuously monitored, is deduced. The probabilities associated with the possible measurement outputs are also obtained, and in this way new…
We show how to implement several continuous-variable coherent protocols with linear optics. Noise can accumulate when implementing each coherent protocol with realistic optical devices. Our analysis bounds the level of noise accumulation. We highlight the connection between a coherent channel and a nonlocal quantum nondemolition interaction and give two new protocols that implement a coherent channel. One protocol is superior to a previous method for a nonlocal quantum nondemolition interaction because it requires fewer communication resources. We then show how continuous-variable coherent sup…

We reverse a quantum nondemolition (QND) interaction and restore the signal quantum state by measurement and feedforward. This operation corresponds to quantum erasing for continuous variables (CVs). CV quantum eraser restores the coherence of the signal quantum state by erasing the signal information leaking to another system, where the information leaking is induced by the QND interaction. We employ a homodyne measurement for erasing of the information. Then, by performing a feedforward displacement operation, we restore the initial quantum state together with its coherence. For verification…
In the present work the detection, by means of a nondemolition measurement, of a Yukawa term, coexisting simultaneously with gravity, has been considered. In other words, a nondemolition variable for the case of a particle immersed in a gravitational field containing a Yukawa term is obtained. Afterwards the continuous monitoring of this nondemolition parameter is analyzed, the corresponding propagator is evaluated, and the probabilities associated with the possible measurement outputs are found. The relevance of these kind of proposals in connection with some unified theories of elementary pa…
We demonstrate an optical quantum nondemolition (QND) interaction gate with a bandwidth of about 100 MHz. Employing this gate, we are able to perform QND measurements in real time on randomly fluctuating signals. Our QND gate relies upon linear optics and offline-prepared squeezed states. In contrast to previous demonstrations on narrow sideband modes, our gate is compatible with non-Gaussian quantum states temporally localized in a wave-packet mode, and thus opens the way for universal gate operations and realization of quantum error correction.
Considering ultracold atoms traversing a high-Q Fabry-Perot cavity, we theoretically demonstrate a quantum nondemolition measurement of the photon number. This fully quantum mechanical approach may be understood utilizing concepts as effective mass and group velocity of the atom. The various photon numbers induce a splitting of the atomic wave packet, and a time-of-flight measurement of the atom thereby reveals the photon number. While repeated atomic measurements increase the efficiency of the protocol, it is shown that by considering long interaction times only a few atoms are needed to reso…
We discuss the feasibility of a quantum nondemolition measurement (QND) of photon number based on cross phase modulation due to the Kerr effect in Photonic Crystal Waveguides (PCWs). In particular, we derive the equations for two modes propagating in PCWs and their coupling by a third order nonlinearity. The reduced group velocity and small cross-sectional area of the PCW lead to an enhancement of the interaction relative to bulk materials. We show that in principle, such experiments may be feasible with current photonic technologies, although they are limited by material properties. Our analy…
We derive a measurement operator corresponding to a quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of an atomic ensemble. The quantum measurement operator takes the form of a positive operator valued measure (POVM) and is valid for arbitrary interaction times, initial coherent state amplitudes, and final photon measurement outcomes. We analyze the dependence on various parameters and show that the effect of the QND measurement for short interaction times is to apply a Gaussian modulation of the initial state wavefunction. We derive approximate expressions for the POVM in various limits, such as the s…
Quantum jumps of a qubit are usually observed between its energy eigenstates, also known as its longitudinal pseudo-spin component. Is it possible, instead, to observe quantum jumps between the transverse superpositions of these eigenstates? We answer positively by presenting the first continuous quantum nondemolition measurement of the transverse component of an individual qubit. In a circuit QED system irradiated by two pump tones, we engineer an effective Hamiltonian whose eigenstates are the transverse qubit states, and a dispersive measurement of the corresponding operator. Such transvers…
According to quantum mechanics, if we keep observing a continuous variable we generally disturb its evolution. For a class of observables, however, it is possible to implement a so-called quantum nondemolition measurement: by confining the perturbation to the conjugate variable, the observable is estimated with arbitrary accuracy, or prepared in a well-known state. For instance, when the light bounces on a movable mirror, its intensity is not perturbed (the effect is just seen on the phase of the radiation), but the radiation pressure allows to trace back its fluctuations by observing the mirr…
We propose a technique for quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement and heralded preparation of Fock states by dynamics of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). An atomic ensemble trapped in an optical cavity is driven by two external continuous-wave classical fields to form EIT in steady state. As soon as a weak coherent field is injected into the cavity, the EIT system departs from steady state, falls into transient state dynamics by the dispersive coupling between cavity injected photons and atoms. Because the imaginary part of time-dependent linear susceptibility Im[X(t)] of the a…
We show that the nanoresonator position can be squeezed significantly below the ground state level by measuring the nanoresonator with a quantum point contact or a single-electron transistor and applying a periodic voltage across the detector. The mechanism of squeezing is basically a generalization of quantum nondemolition measurement of an oscillator to the case of continuous measurement by a weakly coupled detector. The quantum feedback is necessary to prevent the ``heating'' due to measurement back-action. We also discuss a procedure of experimental verification of the squeezed state.
The informational approach to continuous quantum measurement is derived from POVM formalism for a mesoscopic scattering detector measuring a charge qubit. Quantum Bayesian equations for the qubit density matrix are derived, and cast into the form of a stochastic conformal map. Measurement statistics are derived for kicked quantum nondemolition measurements, combined with conditional unitary operations. These results are applied to derive a feedback protocol to produce an arbitrary pure state after a weak measurement, as well as to investigate how an initially mixed state becomes purified with …
While quantum mechanics exquisitely describes the behavior of microscopic systems, one ongoing challenge is to explore its applicability to systems of larger size and mass. Unfortunately, quantum states of increasingly macroscopic objects are more easily corrupted by unintentional measurements from the classical environment. Additionally, even the intentional measurements from the observer can further perturb the system. In optomechanics, coherent light fields serve as the intermediary between the fragile mechanical states and our inherently classical world by exerting radiation pressure force…
In this work we obtain a nondemolition variable for the case in which a charged particle moves in the electric and gravitational fields of a spherical body. Afterwards we consider the continuous monitoring of this nondemolition parameter, and calculate along the ideas of the so called restricted path integral formalism, the corresponding propagator. Using these results the probabilities associated with the possible measurement outputs are evaluated. The limit of our results, as the resolution of the measuring device goes to zero, is analyzed, and the dependence of the corresponding propagator …
Optically-interfaced spins in the solid state are a promising platform for quantum technologies. A crucial component of these systems is high-fidelity, projective measurement of the spin state. In previous work with laser-cooled atoms and ions, and solid-state defects, this has been accomplished using fluorescence on an optical cycling transition; however, cycling transitions are not ubiquitous. In this work, we demonstrate that modifying the electromagnetic environment using an optical cavity can induce a cycling transition in a solid-state atomic defect. By coupling a single Erbium ion defec…
We develop a measurement operator formalism to handle quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement induced entanglement generation between two atomic gases. We first derive how the QND entangling scheme reduces to a positive operator-valued measure, and consider its limiting case when it can be used to construct a projection operator that collapses the state to a total spin projection state. We then analyze how a stroboscopic sequence of such projections made in the x and z basis evolves the initial wave function. Such a sequence of QND projections can enhance the entanglement between the atomic en…
A novel scheme to realize the whole class of quantum nondemolition (QND) measurements of a field quadrature is suggested. The setup requires linear optical components and squeezers, and allows optimal QND measurements of quadratures, which minimize the information gain versus state disturbance trade-off.
We analyze squeezing of the nanoresonator state produced by periodic measurement of position by a quantum point contact or a single-electron transistor. The mechanism of squeezing is the stroboscopic quantum nondemolition measurement generalized to the case of continuous measurement by a weakly coupled detector. The magnitude of squeezing is calculated for the harmonic and stroboscopic modulations of measurement, taking into account detector efficiency and nanoresonator quality factor. We also analyze the operation of the quantum feedback, which prevents fluctuations of the wavepacket center d…
The continuous transition from a low resolution quantum nondemolition measurement of light field intensity to a precise measurement of photon number is described using a generalized measurement postulate. In the intermediate regime, quantization appears as a weak modulation of measurement probability. In this regime, the measurement result is strongly correlated with the amount of phase decoherence introduced by the measurement interaction. In particular, the accidental observation of half integer photon numbers preserves phase coherence in the light field, while the accidental observation of …
The conventional method of qubit measurements in circuit QED is employing the dispersive regime of qubit-cavity coupling, which results in an approximated scheme of quantum nondemolition (QND) readout. This scheme becomes problematic in the case of strong coupling and/or strong measurement drive, owing to the so-called Purcell effect. A recent proposal by virtue of longitudinal coupling suggests a new scheme to realize fast, high-fidelity, and {\it ideal QND} readout of qubit state. The aim of the present work is twofold: (i) In parallel to what has been done in the past years for the dispersi…
We study the enhancement of cooperativity in the atom-light interface near a nanophotonic waveguide for application to quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement of atomic spins. Here the cooperativity per atom is determined by the ratio between the measurement strength and the decoherence rate. Counterintuitively, we find that by placing the atoms at an azimuthal position where the guided probe mode has the lowest intensity, we increase the cooperativity. This arises because the QND measurement strength depends on the interference between the probe and scattered light guided into an orthogonal p…
A stochastic model for the continuous nondemolition ohservation of the position of a quantum particle in a potential field and a boson reservoir is given. lt is shown that any Gaussian wave function evolving according to the posterior wave equation with a quadratic potential collapses to a Gaussian wave packet given by the stationary solution of this equation.
We study theoretically a radio frequency superconducting interference device integrated with both a nanomechanical resonator and an LC one. By applying adiabatic and rotating wave approximations, we obtain an effective Hamiltonian that governs the dynamics of the mechanical and LC resonators. Nonlinear terms in this Hamiltonian can be exploited for performing a quantum nondemolition measurement of Fock states of the nanomechanical resonator. We address the feasibility of experimental implementation and show that the nonlinear coupling can be made sufficiently strong to allow the detection of d…
We study how the spontaneous relaxation of a qubit affects a continuous quantum non-demolition measurement of the initial state of the qubit. Given some noisy measurement record $Ψ$, we seek an estimate of whether the qubit was initially in the ground or excited state. We investigate four different measurement protocols, three of which use a linear filter (with different weighting factors) and a fourth which uses a full non-linear filter that gives the theoretically optimal estimate of the initial state of the qubit. We find that relaxation of the qubit at rate $1/T_1$ strongly influences the …
We present a protocol for generation of superpositions of states with distinguishable field amplitudes in an optical cavity by quantum nondemolition photon number measurements and coherent feeding of the cavity.
The ability to nondestructively detect the presence of a single, traveling photon has been a long-standing goal in optics, with applications in quantum information and measurement. Realising such a detector is complicated by the fact that photon-photon interactions are typically very weak. At microwave frequencies, very strong effective photon-photon interactions in a waveguide have recently been demonstrated. Here we show how this type of interaction can be used to realize a quantum nondemolition measurement of a single propagating microwave photon. The scheme we propose uses a chain of solid…
We experimentally demonstrate the concept of continuous variable quantum erasing. The amplitude quadrature of the signal state is labelled to another state via a quantum nondemolition interaction, leading to a large uncertainty in the determination of the phase quadrature due to the inextricable complementarity of the two observables. We show that by erasing the amplitude quadrature information we are able to recover the phase quadrature information of the signal state.
Realization of a room-temperature ultra-fast photon-number-resolving (PNR) quantum nondemolition (QND) measurement would have significant implications for photonic quantum information processing (QIP), enabling, e.g., deterministic quantum computation in discrete-variable architectures, but the requirement for strong coupling has hampered the development of scalable implementations. In this work, we propose and analyze a nonlinear-optical route to PNR QND using quadratic (i.e., $χ^{(2)}$) nonlinear interactions. We show that the coherent pump field driving a phase-mismatched optical parametric…
An optical procedure in the context of continuous variables to verify bipartite entanglement without destroying both systems and their entanglement is proposed. To perform the nondestructive verification of entanglement, the method relies on beam-splitter and quantum nondemolition (QND) interactions of the signal modes with two ancillary probe modes. The probe modes are measured by homodyne detections, and the obtained information is used to feed forward modulation of signal modes, concluding the procedure. Characterizing the method by figures of merit used in QND processes, we can establish t…
We experimentally demonstrate, with an all-optical setup, a nonlocal deterministic quantum non-demolition interaction gate applicable to quantum states at nodes separated by a physical distance and connected by classical communication channels. The gate implementation, based on entangled states shared in advance, local operations, and classical communication, runs completely in parallel fashion at both the local nodes, requiring minimum resource. The nondemolition character of the gate up to the local unitary squeezing is verified by the analysis using several coherent states. A genuine quantu…
The relation between the restricted path integral approach to quantum measurement theory and the commonly accepted von Neumann wavefunction collapse postulate is presented. It is argued that in the limit of impulsive measurements the two approaches lead to the same predictions. The example of repeated impulsive quantum measurements of position performed on a harmonic oscillator is discussed in detail and the quantum nondemolition strategies are recovered in both the approaches.
The measurement of a quantum two-level system, or a qubit in modern terminology, often involves an electromagnetic field that interacts with the qubit, before the field is measured continuously and the qubit state is inferred from the noisy field measurement. During the measurement, the qubit may undergo spontaneous transitions, further obscuring the initial qubit state from the observer. Taking advantage of some well known techniques in stochastic detection theory, here we propose a novel signal processing protocol that can infer the initial qubit state optimally from the measurement in the p…
With the advent of gravitational wave detectors employing squeezed light, quantum waveform estimation---estimating a time-dependent signal by means of a quantum-mechanical probe---is of increasing importance. As is well known, backaction of quantum measurement limits the precision with which the waveform can be estimated, though these limits can in principle be overcome by "quantum nondemolition" (QND) measurement setups found in the literature. Strictly speaking, however, their implementation would require infinite energy, as their mathematical description involves Hamiltonians unbounded from…
Only a few years ago, it was realized that the zero-area Sagnac interferometer topology is able to perform quantum nondemolition measurements of position changes of a mechanical oscillator. Here, we experimentally show that such an interferometer can also be efficiently enhanced by squeezed light. We achieved a nonclassical sensitivity improvement of up to 8.2 dB, limited by optical loss inside our interferometer. Measurements performed directly on our squeezed-light laser output revealed squeezing of 12.7 dB. We show that the sensitivity of a squeezed-light enhanced Sagnac interferometer can …
We propose a quantum feedback scheme for producing deterministically reproducible spin squeezing. The results of a continuous nondemolition atom number measurement are fed back to control the quantum state of the sample. For large samples and strong cavity coupling, the squeezing parameter minimum scales inversely with atom number, approaching the Heisenberg limit. Furthermore, ceasing the measurement and feedback when this minimum has been reached will leave the sample in the maximally squeezed spin state.
The question: "Where was a quantum particle between pre- and postselection measurements?" is analyzed in view of a recent proposal that it was in the overlap of the forward and backward evolving wave functions. It is argued that this proposal corresponds not only to the criterion of where the particle leaves a weak trace, but also where the local interactions can affect the probability of postselection and where finding the particle in a strong nondemolition measurement is possible. The concept of a "secondary presence" of a pre- and postselected particle where local interactions affect the we…
We present a detailed theoretical description of an atomic scanning microscope in a cavity QED setup proposed in Phys. Rev. Lett. 120, 133601 (2018). The microscope continuously observes atomic densities with optical subwavelength resolution in a nondestructive way. The super-resolution is achieved by engineering an internal atomic dark state with a sharp spatial variation of population of a ground level dispersively coupled to the cavity field. Thus, the atomic position encoded in the internal state is revealed as a phase shift of the light reflected from the cavity in a homodyne experiment. …
We theoretically describe the quantum Zeno effect in a spin-photon interface represented by a charged quantum dot in a micropillar cavity. The electron spin in this system entangles with the polarization of the transmitted photons, and their continuous detection leads to the slowing of the electron spin precession in external magnetic field and induces the spin relaxation. We obtain a microscopic expression for the spin measurement rate and calculate the second and fourth order correlation functions of the spin noise, which evidence the change of the spin statistics due to the quantum Zeno eff…
The nonlinear photon-photon interaction mediated by a single two-level atom is studied theoretically based on a one-dimensional model of the field-atom interaction. This model allows us to determine the effects of an atomic nonlinearity on the spatiotemporal coherence of a two photon state. Specifically, the complete two photon output wave function can be obtained for any two photon input wave function. It is shown that the quantum interference between the components of the output state associated with different interaction processes causes bunching and anti-bunching in the two photon statisti…
Time-continuous non-anticipating quantum processes of nondemolition measurements are introduced as the dynamical realizations of the causal quasi-measurements, which are described in this paper by the adapted operator-valued probability measures on the trajectory spaces of the generalized temporal observations in quantum open systems. In particular, the notion of physically realizable quantum filter is defined and the problem of its optimization to obtain the best a posteriori quantum state is considered. It is proved that the optimal filtering of a quantum Markovian Gaussian signal with the G…
A brief presentation of the basic concepts in quantum probability theory is given in comparison to the classical one. The notion of quantum white noise, its explicit representation in Fock space, and necessary results of noncommutative stochastic analysis and integration are outlined. Algebraic differential equations that unify the quantum non Markovian diffusion with continuous non demolition observation are derived. A stochastic equation of quantum diffusion filtering generalising the classical Markov filtering equation to the quantum flows over arbitrary *-algebra is obtained. A Gaussian qu…
In quantum mechanical bipartite systems, naive extensions of von Neumann's projective measurement to nonlocal variables can produce superluminal signals and thus violate causality. We analyze the projective quantum nondemolition state-verification in a two-spin system and see how the projection introduces nonlocality without entanglement. For the ideal measurements of "R-nonlocal" variables, we argue that causality violation can be resolved by introducing further restrictions on the post-measurement states, which makes the measurement "Q-nonlocal". After we generalize these ideas to quantum me…
A quantum stochastic model for an open dynamical system (quantum receiver) and output multi-channel of observation with an additive nonvacuum quantum noise is given. A quantum stochastic Master equation for the corresponding instrument is derived and quantum stochastic filtering equations both for the Heisenberg operators and the reduced density matrix of the system under the nondemolition observation are found. Thus the dynamical problem of quantum filtering is generalized for a noncommutative output process, and a quantum stochastic model and optimal filtering equation for the dynamical esti…
