A brief presentation of the basic concepts in quantum probability theory is given in comparison to the classical one. The notion of quantum white noise, its explicit representation in Fock space, and necessary results of noncommutative stochastic analysis and integration are outlined. Algebraic differential equations that unify the quantum non Markovian diffusion with continuous non demolition observation are derived. A stochastic equation of quantum diffusion filtering generalising the classical Markov filtering equation to the quantum flows over arbitrary *-algebra is obtained. A Gaussian quantum diffusion with one dimensional continuous observation is considered. The a posteriori quantum state difusion in this case is reduced to a linear quantum stochastic filter equation of Kalman-Bucy type and to the operator Riccati equation for quantum correlations. An example of continuous nondemolition observation of the coordinate of a free quantum particle is considered, describing a continuous collase to the stationary solution of the linear quantum filtering problem found in the paper.
We show that the quantum state diffusion equation of Gisin and Percival, driven by complex Wiener noise, is equivalent up to a global stochastic phase to quantum trajectory models. With an appropriate feedback scheme, we set up an analogue continuous measurement model with exactly simulates the Gisin-Percival quantum state diffusion.
We describe a nonlinear interferometric setup to perform a complete optical Bell measurement, i.e. to unambigously discriminate the four polarization entangled EPR-Bell photon pairs. The scheme is robust against detector inefficiency.
We report on a back-action evading (BAE) measurement of the photon number of fiber optical solitons operating in the quantum regime. We employ a novel detection scheme based on spectral filtering of colliding optical solitons. The measurements of the BAE criteria demonstrate significant quantum state preparation and transfer of the input signal to the signal and probe outputs exiting the apparatus, displaying the quantum-nondemolition (QND) behavior of the experiment.
A stochastic model for a continuous photon counting and heterodyne measurement of a coherent source is proposed. A nonlinear filtering equation for the posterior state of a single-mode field in a cavity is derived by using the methods of quantum stochastic calculus. The posterior dynamics is found for the observation of a Bose field being initially in a coherent state. The filtering equations for counting and diffusion processes are given.
In this paper we consider the purification of a quantum state using the information obtained from a continuous measurement record, where the classical measurement record is digitized to a single bit per measurement after the measurements have been made. Analysis indicates that efficient and reliable state purification is achievable for one- and two-qubit systems. We also consider quantum feedback control based on the discrete one-bit measurement sequences.
We extend the optimal filtering equation known from the Stratonovich filtering theory on the quantum process case. The used observation model is based on an indirect measurement method, where the measurement is performed on an ancilla system that is interacted with an unknown one. Observation model for single qudit system is proposed.
In this paper, we derive the stochastic master equations for quantum systems driven by a single-photon input state which is contaminated by quantum vacuum noise. To improve estimation performance, quantum filters based on multiple-channel measurements are designed. Two cases, namely diffusive plus Poissonian measurements and two diffusive measurements, are considered.
We present the Belavkin filtering equation for the intense balanced heterodyne detection in a unitary model of an indirect observation. The measuring apparatus modelled by a Bose field is initially prepared in a coherent state and the observed process is a diffusion one. We prove that this filtering equation is relaxing: any initial square-integrable function tends asymptotically to a coherent state with an amplitude depending on the coupling constant and the initial state of the apparatus. The time-development of a squeezed coherent state is studied and compared with the previous results obta…
The single-photon quantum filtering problems have been investigated recently with applications in quantum computing. In practice, the detector responds with a quantum efficiency of less than unity since there exists some mode mismatch between the detector and the system, and the single-photon signal may be corrupted by quantum white noise. Consequently, quantum filters based on multiple measurements are designed in this paper to improve the estimation performance. More specifically, the filtering equations for a two-level quantum system driven by a single-photon input state and under multiple …
Based on the measurement of quantum correlation functions, the quantum statistical properties of spectral measurements are studied for broadband radiation fields. The spectral filtering of light before its detection is compared with the direct detection followed by the spectral analysis of the recorded photocurrents. As an example, the squeezing spectra of the atomic resonance fluorescence are studied for both types of filtering procedures. The conditions for which the detection of the nonclassical signatures of the radiation is possible are analyzed. For the considered example, photocurrent f…
Adaptive filtering is a powerful class of control theoretic concepts useful in extracting information from noisy data sets or performing forward prediction in time for a dynamic system. The broad utilization of the associated algorithms makes them attractive targets for similar problems in the quantum domain. To date, however, the construction of adaptive filters for quantum systems has typically been carried out in terms of stochastic differential equations for weak, continuous quantum measurements, as used in linear quantum systems such as optical cavities. Discretized measurement models are…
A Markovian model for a quantum automata, i.e. an open quantum dynamical discrete-time system with input and output channels and a feedback, is described. A dynamical theory of quantum discrete-time adaptive measurements and multi-stage quantum statistical decisions is developed and applied to the optimal feedback control problem for the quantum dynamical objects. Quantum analogies of Stratonovich non-stationary filtering, and Bellman quantum dynamical programming in the discrete time are derived. A Gaussian Langevin model of the quantum one-dimensional linear Markovian dynamical system matche…
We consider an open model possessing a Markovian quantum stochastic limit and derive the limit stochastic Schrodinger equations for the wave function conditioned on indirect observations using only the von Neumann projection postulate. We show that the diffusion (Gaussian) situation is universal as a result of the central limit theorem with the quantum jump (Poissonian) situation being an exceptional case. It is shown that, starting from the correponding limiting open systems dynamics, the theory of quantum filtering leads to the same equations, therefore establishing consistency of the quantu…
The resources needed to conventionally characterize a quantum system are overwhelmingly large for high- dimensional systems. This obstacle may be overcome by abandoning traditional cornerstones of quantum measurement, such as general quantum states, strong projective measurement, and assumption-free characterization. Following this reasoning, we demonstrate an efficient technique for characterizing high-dimensional, spatial entanglement with one set of measurements. We recover sharp distributions with local, random filtering of the same ensemble in momentum followed by position---something the…
We derive the form of the Belavkin-Kushner-Stratonovich equation describing the filtering of a continuous observed quantum system via non-demolition measurements when the statistics of the input field used for the indirect measurement are in a general coherent state.
Until now, Schrödinger's cat states are generated by subtracting single photons from the whole bandwidth of squeezed vacua. However, it was pointed out recently that the achievable purities are limited in such method (J. Yoshikawa, W. Asavanant, and A. Furusawa, arXiv:1707.08146 [quant-ph] (2017)). In this paper, we used our new photon subtraction method with a narrowband filtering cavity and generated a highly pure Schrödinger's cat state with the value of $-0.184$ at the origin of the Wigner function. To our knowledge, this is the highest value ever reported without any loss corrections. The…
We derive the form of the quantum filter equation describing the continuous observation of the phase of a quantum system in an arm of an interferometer via non-demolition measurements when the statistics of an input field used for the indirect measurement are in a general coherent state. Both quadrature homodyne detection and photon-counting dection schemes are covered, and we solve the linearized filter for a specific application.
The following notes are based on lectures delivered at the research school Modeling and Control of Open Quantum Systems (Modélisation et contrôle des systèmes quantiques ouverts) at CIRM, Marseille, 16-20 April, 2018, as part of the Trimester \textit{Measurement and Control of Quantum Systems: Theory and Experiments} organized at Institut Henri Poincaré, Paris, France. The aim is to introduce quantum filtering to an audience with a background in either quantum theory or classical filtering.
The purpose of this paper is to propose quantum filters for a two-level atom driven by two continuous-mode counter-propagating photons and under continuous measurements. Two scenarios of multiple measurements, 1) homodyne detection plus photodetection, and 2) two homodyne detections, are discussed. Filtering equations for both cases are derived explicitly. As demonstration, the two input photons with rising exponential and Gaussian pulse shapes are used to excite a two-level atom under two homodyne detection measurements. Simulations reveal scaling relations between atom-photon coupling and ph…
Time-continuous non-anticipating quantum processes of nondemolition measurements are introduced as the dynamical realizations of the causal quasi-measurements, which are described in this paper by the adapted operator-valued probability measures on the trajectory spaces of the generalized temporal observations in quantum open systems. In particular, the notion of physically realizable quantum filter is defined and the problem of its optimization to obtain the best a posteriori quantum state is considered. It is proved that the optimal filtering of a quantum Markovian Gaussian signal with the G…
We provide a rigorous derivation of a quantum filter for the case of multiple measurements being made on a quantum system. We consider a class of measurement processes which are functions of bosonic field operators, including combinations of diffusive and Poissonian processes. This covers the standard cases from quantum optics, where homodyne detection may be described as a diffusive process and photon counting may be described as a Poissonian process. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for any pair of such measurements taken at different output channels to satisfy a commutation re…
A quantum stochastic model for an open dynamical system (quantum receiver) and output multi-channel of observation with an additive nonvacuum quantum noise is given. A quantum stochastic Master equation for the corresponding instrument is derived and quantum stochastic filtering equations both for the Heisenberg operators and the reduced density matrix of the system under the nondemolition observation are found. Thus the dynamical problem of quantum filtering is generalized for a noncommutative output process, and a quantum stochastic model and optimal filtering equation for the dynamical esti…
