We consider a two-dimensional spin system that exhibits abelian anyonic excitations. Manipulations of these excitations enable the construction of a quantum computational model. While the one-qubit gates are performed dynamically the model offers the advantage of having a two-qubit gate that is of topological nature. The transport and braiding of anyons on the lattice can be performed adiabatically enjoying the robust characteristics of geometrical evolutions. The same control procedures can be used when dealing with non-abelian anyons. A possible implementation of the manipulations with optical lattices is developed.
The Kitaev honeycomb model is a system allowing for experimentally realisable quantum computation with topological protection of quantum information. Practical implementation of quantum information processing typically relies on adiabatic, i.e. slow dynamics. Here we show that the restriction to adiabatic dynamics can be overcome with optimal control theory, enabled by an extension of the fermionization of the Kitaev honeycomb model to the time-dependent case. Moreover we present a quantum control method that is applicable to large lattice models due to sub-exponential scaling.
In this set of lectures, we will start with a brief pedagogical introduction to abelian anyons and their properties. This will essentially cover the background material with an introduction to basic concepts in anyon physics, fractional statistics, braid groups and abelian anyons. The next topic that we will study is a specific exactly solvable model, called the toric code model, whose excitations have (mutual) anyon statistics. Then we will go on to discuss non-abelian anyons, where we will use the one dimensional Kitaev model as a prototypical example to produce Majorana modes at the edge. W…
Relativistic Mott insulators known as 'Kitaev materials' potentially realize spin liquids hosting non-Abelian anyons. Motivated by fault-tolerant quantum-computing applications in this setting, we introduce a dynamical anyon-generation protocol that exploits universal edge physics. The setup features holes in the spin liquid, which define energetically cheap locations for non-Abelian anyons, connected by a narrow bridge that can be tuned between spin liquid and topologically trivial phases. We show that modulating the bridge from trivial to spin liquid over intermediate time scales -- quantifi…
The common approach to topological quantum computation is to implement quantum gates by adiabatically moving non-Abelian anyons around each other. Here we present an alternative perspective based on the possibility of realizing the exchange (braiding) operators of anyons by adiabatically varying pairwise interactions between them rather than their positions. We analyze a system composed by four anyons whose couplings define a T-junction and we show that the braiding operator of two of them can be obtained through a particular adiabatic cycle in the space of the coupling parameters. We also dis…
We show in this Letter that the ground state degeneracy associated with the presence of non-Abelian anyons can be probed by using an adiabatic cooling process based on the non-Abelian entropy. In particular, we show that when the number of such anyons is increased adiabatically at sufficiently low temperatures, the non-Abelian liquid undergoes cooling, whereas heating occurs in the Abelian case. Estimates are provided for the cooling power produced by the non-Abelian anyon refrigerator, and its implementation in non-Abelian fractional quantum Hall liquids is discussed.
Topological systems, such as fractional quantum Hall liquids, promise to successfully combat environmental decoherence while performing quantum computation. These highly correlated systems can support non-Abelian anyonic quasiparticles that can encode exotic entangled states. To reveal the non-local character of these encoded states we demonstrate the violation of suitable Bell inequalities. We provide an explicit recipe for the preparation, manipulation and measurement of the desired correlations for a large class of topological models. This proposal gives an operational measure of non-locali…
Quantum computation provides a unique opportunity to explore new regimes of physical systems through the creation of non-trivial quantum states far outside of the classical limit. However, such computation is remarkably sensitive to noise and undergoes rapid dephasing in most cases. One potential solution to these prosaic concerns is to encode and process the information using topological manipulations of so-called anyons, particles in two dimensions with non-Abelian statistics. Unfortunately, practical implementation of such a topological system remains far from complete, both in terms of phy…
Topological quantum computers provide a fault-tolerant method for performing quantum computation. Topological quantum computers manipulate topological defects with exotic exchange statistics called anyons. The simplest anyon model for universal topological quantum computation is the Fibonacci anyon model, which is a non-abelian anyon system. In non-abelian anyon systems, exchanging anyons always results a unitary operations instead of a simple phase changing in abelian anyon systems. So, non-abelian anyon systems are of the interest to topological quantum computation. Up till now, most people …
Quantum information scrambling is the spread of local information into correlation throughout the entire quantum many-body system. This concept has become a central topic in different contexts. In this work, we restate the connection between anyon condensation and topological quantum information scrambling in quantum Hall interfaces. We consider the interface between the Abelian Halperin-330 state and the non-Abelian Read-Rezayi state. We verify explicitly that the interface can be fully gapped. This allows the transmutation of local pseudospin information carried by an Abelian anyon into topo…
We examine tunneling of topological charge between non-Abelian anyons as a perturbation of the long-range effective theory of a topologically ordered system. We obtain energy corrections in terms of the anyons' universal algebraic structure and non-universal tunneling amplitudes. We find that generic tunneling completely lifts the topological degeneracy of non-Abelian anyons. This degeneracy splitting is exponentially suppressed for long distances between anyons, but leaves no topological protection at shorter distances. We also show that general interactions of anyons can be expressed in term…
A universal quantum computer can be constructed using abelian anyons. Two qubit quantum logic gates such as controlled-NOT operations are performed using topological effects. Single-anyon operations such as hopping from site to site on a lattice suffice to perform all quantum logic operations. Quantum computation using abelian anyons shares some but not all of the robustness of quantum computation using non-abelian anyons.
Non-Abelian anyons can exist as point-like particles in two-dimensional systems, and have particle exchange statistics which are neither bosonic nor fermionic. Like in spin systems, the role of fusion (Heisenberg-like) interactions between anyons has been well studied. However, unlike our understanding of the role of bosonic and fermionic statistics in the formation of different quantum phases of matter, little is known concerning the effect of non-Abelian anyonic statistics. We explore this physics using an anyonic Hubbard model on a two-legged ladder which includes braiding and nearest neigh…

Qubits in topological quantum computation are built from non-Abelian anyons. Adiabatic braiding of anyons is exploited as topologically protected logical gate operations. Thus, the adiabaticity upon which the notion of quantum statistics is defined, plays a fundamental role in defining the non-Abelian anyons. We study the non-adiabatic effects in braidings of Ising-type anyons, namely Majorana fermions in topological superconductors, using the formalism of time-dependent Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. Using this formalism, we consider non-adiabatic corrections to non-Abelian statistics from: …

We propose a generalization of the color codes based on finite groups $G$. For non-abelian groups, the resulting model supports non-abelian anyonic quasiparticles and topological order. We examine the properties of these models such as their relationship to Kitaev quantum double models, quasiparticle spectrum, and boundary structure.
We develop the general quantum measurement theory of non-Abelian anyons through interference experiments. The paper starts with a terse introduction to the theory of anyon models, focusing on the basic formalism necessary to apply standard quantum measurement theory to such systems. This is then applied to give a detailed analysis of anyonic charge measurements using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer for arbitrary anyon models. We find that, as anyonic probes are sent through the legs of the interferometer, superpositions of the total anyonic charge located in the target region collapse when they …
Recently a pair of experiments demonstrated a simulation of Abelian anyons in a spin network of single photons. The experiments were based on an Abelian discrete gauge theory spin lattice model of Kitaev. Here we describe how to use linear optics and single photons to simulate non-Abelian anyons. The scheme makes use of joint qutrit-qubit encoding of the spins and the resources required are three pairs of parametric down converted photons and 14 beam splitters.
We consider a class of decoding algorithms that are applicable to error correction for both Abelian and non-Abelian anyons. This class includes multiple algorithms that have recently attracted attention, including the Bravyi-Haah RG decoder. They are applied to both the problem of single shot error correction (with perfect syndrome measurements) and that of active error correction (with noisy syndrome measurements). For Abelian models we provide a threshold proof in both cases, showing that there is a finite noise threshold under which errors can be arbitrarily suppressed when any decoder in t…
We consider a two-dimensional spin system in a honeycomb lattice configuration that exhibits anyonic and fermionic excitations [Kitaev, cond-mat/0506438]. The exact spectrum that corresponds to the translationally invariant case of a vortex-lattice is derived from which the energy of a single pair of vortices can be estimated. The anyonic properties of the vortices are demonstrated and their generation and transportation manipulations are explicitly given. A simple interference experiment with six spins is proposed that can reveal the anyonic statistics of this model.
The one dimensional quantum walk of anyonic systems is presented. The anyonic walker performs braiding operations with stationary anyons of the same type ordered canonically on the line of the walk. Abelian as well as non-Abelian anyons are studied and it is shown that they have very different properties. Abelian anyonic walks demonstrate the expected quadratic quantum speedup. Non-Abelian anyonic walks are much more subtle. The exponential increase of the system's Hilbert space and the particular statistical evolution of non-Abelian anyons give a variety of new behaviors. The position distrib…
While topological quantum computation is intrinsically fault-tolerant at zero temperature, it loses its topological protection at any finite temperature. We present a scheme to protect the information stored in a system supporting non-cyclic anyons against thermal and measurement errors. The correction procedure builds on the work of Gács [Gacs 1986] and Harrington [Harrington 2004] and operates as a local cellular automaton. In contrast to previously studied schemes, our scheme is valid for both abelian and non-abelian anyons and accounts for measurement errors. We analytically prove the exis…
The emergence of non-Abelian anyons from large collections of interacting elementary particles is a conceptually beautiful phenomenon with important ramifications for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Over the last few decades the field has evolved from a highly theoretical subject to an active experimental area, particularly following proposals for trapping non-Abelian anyons in `engineered' structures built from well-understood components. In this short overview we briefly tour the impressive progress that has taken place in the quest for the simplest type of non-Abelian anyon---defects bind…
We present a theoretical analysis of inequivalent classes of interference experiments with non-abelian anyons using an idealized Mach-Zender type interferometer. Because of the non-abelian nature of the braid group action one has to distinguish the different possibilities in which the experiment can be repeated, which lead to different interference patterns. We show that each setup will, after repeated measurement, lead to a situation where the two-particle (or multi-particle) state gets locked into an eigenstate of some well defined operator. Also the probability to end up in such an eigensta…
We describe how continuous-variable abelian anyons, created on the surface of a continuous-variable analogue of Kitaev's lattice model can be utilized for quantum computation. In particular, we derive protocols for the implementation of quantum gates using topological operations. We find that the topological operations alone are insufficient for universal quantum computation which leads us to study additional non-topological operations such as offline squeezing and single-mode measurements. It is shown that these in conjunction with a non-Gaussian element allow for universal quantum computatio…
A spin 1/2 system on a honeycomb lattice is studied. The interactions between nearest neighbors are of XX, YY or ZZ type, depending on the direction of the link; different types of interactions may differ in strength. The model is solved exactly by a reduction to free fermions in a static $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gauge field. A phase diagram in the parameter space is obtained. One of the phases has an energy gap and carries excitations that are Abelian anyons. The other phase is gapless, but acquires a gap in the presence of magnetic field. In the latter case excitations are non-Abelian anyons whose b…
We present an exactly solvable model for synthetic anyons carrying non-Abelian flux. The model corresponds to a two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic field with a specific spin interaction term, which allows only fully aligned spin states in the ground state; the ground state subspace is thus two-fold degenerate. This system is perturbed with identical solenoids carrying a non-Abelian gauge potential. We explore dynamics of the ground state as these solenoids are adiabatically braided and show they behave as anyons with a non-Abelian flux. Such a system represents a middle ground between …
We consider topological quantum memories for a general class of abelian anyon models defined on spin lattices. These are non-universal for quantum computation when restricting to topological operations alone, such as braiding and fusion. The effects of additional non-topological operations, such as spin measurements, are studied. These are shown to allow universal quantum computation, while still utilizing topological protection. Our work gives an insight into the relation between abelian models and their non-abelian counterparts.
We study the entanglement spectrum of topological systems hosting non-Abelian anyons. Akin to energy levels of a Hamiltonian, the entanglement spectrum is composed of symmetry multiplets. We find that the ratio between different eigenvalues within one multiplet is universal and is determined by the anyonic quantum dimensions. This result is a consequence of the conservation of the total topological charge. For systems with non-Abelian topological order, this generalizes known degeneracies of the entanglement spectrum, which are hallmarks of topological states. Experimental detection of these e…
The quasi one-dimensional transport of Abelian and non-Abelian anyons is studied in the presence of a random topological background. In particular, we consider the quantum walk of an anyon that braids around islands of randomly filled static anyons of the same type. Two distinct behaviours are identified. We analytically demonstrate that all types of Abelian anyons localise purely due to the statistical phases induced by their random anyonic environment. In contrast, we numerically show that non-Abelian Ising anyons do not localise. This is due to their entanglement with the anyonic environmen…
We study exactly both the ground-state fidelity susceptibility and bond-bond correlation function in the Kitaev honeycomb model. Our results show that the fidelity susceptibility can be used to identify the topological phase transition from a gapped A phase with Abelian anyon excitations to a gapless B phase with non-Abelian anyon excitations. We also find that the bond-bond correlation function decays exponentially in the gapped phase, but algebraically in the gapless phase. For the former case, the correlation length is found to be $1/ξ=2\sinh^{-1}[\sqrt{2J_z -1}/(1-J_z)]$, which diverges ar…
In two-dimensions, the laws of physics even permit the existence of anyons which exhibit fractional statistics ranging continuously from bosonic to fermionic behaviour. They have been responsible for the fractional quantum Hall effect and proposed as candidates for naturally fault-tolerant quantum computation. Despite these remarkable properties, the fractional statistics of anyons has never been observed in nature directly. Here we report the demonstration of fractional statistics of anyons by simulation of the first Kitaev lattice-spin model on a nuclear magnetic resonance system. We encode …
Anyon models are algebraic structures that model universal topological properties in topological phases of matter and can be regarded as mathematical characterization of topological order in two spacial dimensions. It is conjectured that every anyon model, or mathematically unitary modular tensor category, can be realized as the representation category of some chiral conformal field theory, or mathematically vertex operator algebra/local conformal net. This conjecture is known to be true for abelian anyon models providing support for the conjecture. We reexamine abelian anyon models from sever…
We demonstrate that certain vortices in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates are non-Abelian anyons and may be useful for topological quantum computation. We perform numerical experiments of controllable braiding and fusion of such vortices, implementing the actions required for manipulating topological qubits. Our results suggest that a new platform for topological quantum information processing could potentially be developed by harnessing non-Abelian vortex anyons in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates.
We study the single particle dynamics of a mobile non-Abelian anyon hopping around many pinned anyons on a surface. The dynamics is modelled by a discrete time quantum walk and the spatial degree of freedom of the mobile anyon becomes entangled with the fusion degrees of freedom of the collective system. Each quantum trajectory makes a closed braid on the world lines of the particles establishing a direct connection between statistical dynamics and quantum link invariants. We find that asymptotically a mobile Ising anyon becomes so entangled with its environment that its statistical dynamics r…
In three spatial dimensions, particles are limited to either bosonic or fermionic statistics. Two-dimensional systems, on the other hand, can support anyonic quasiparticles exhibiting richer statistical behaviours. An exciting proposal for quantum computation is to employ anyonic statistics to manipulate information. Since such statistical evolutions depend only on topological characteristics, the resulting computation is intrinsically resilient to errors. So-called non-Abelian anyons are most promising for quantum computation, but their physical realization may prove to be complex. Abelian an…
Anyons are particlelike excitations of strongly correlated phases of matter with fractional statistics, characterized by nontrivial changes in the wave function, generalizing Bose and Fermi statistics, when two of them are interchanged. This can be used to perform quantum computations [A. Yu. Kitaev, Ann. Phys. (N.Y.) 303, 2 (2003)]. We show how to simulate the creation and manipulation of Abelian and non- Abelian anyons in topological lattice models using trapped atoms in optical lattices. Our proposal, feasible with present technology, requires an ancilla particle which can undergo single-pa…
We construct models of interacting itinerant non-Abelian anyons moving along one-dimensional chains, focusing in particular on itinerant Ising anyon chains, and derive effective anyonic t-J models for the low energy sectors. Solving these models by exact diagonalization, we find a fractionalization of the anyons into charge and (non-Abelian) anyonic degrees of freedom -- a generalization of spin-charge separation of electrons which occurs in Luttinger liquids. A detailed description of the excitation spectrum by combining spectra for charge and anyonic sectors requires a subtle coupling betwee…
We propose a novel parameter, the anyonic topological entropy, designed to detect the error correcting phase of a topological memory. Unlike similar quantities such as the topological entropy, the anyonic topological entropy is defined using the states of the anyon occupations. As such, though the parameter deals with phases and phase transitions that are quantum in nature, it can be calculated solely from classical probability distributions. In many cases, these calculations will be tractable using efficient classical algorithms. The parameter therefore provides a new avenue for efficient stu…
A convenient and effective way in the quantum double model to study anyons in a topological space with a tensor product structure is to create and braid anyons using ribbon operators connected to a common base site [A. Kitaev Ann.\ Phys. (N.Y.) \textbf{303}, 2 (2003)]. We show how this scheme can be simulated in a physical system by constructing long ribbon operators connected to a base site that is placed faraway. We describe how to move and braid anyons using these ribbon operators, and how to perform measurement on them. We also give the smallest scale of a system that is sufficient for pro…
We introduce both an exactly solvable model and a coupled-layer construction for an exotic, three-dimensional phase of matter with immobile topological excitations that carry a protected internal degeneracy. Unitary transformations on this degenerate Hilbert space may be implemented by braiding certain point-like excitations. This provides a new way of extending non-Abelian statistics to three-dimensions.
Anyon models can be symmetric under some permutations of their topological charges. One can then conceive topological defects that, under monodromy, transform anyons according to a symmetry. We study the realization of such defects in the toric code model, showing that a process where defects are braided and fused has the same outcome as if they were Ising anyons. These ideas can also be applied in the context of topological codes.
The content of this thesis can be broadly summarised into two categories: first, I constructed modified numerical algorithms based on tensor networks to simulate systems of anyons in low dimensions, and second, I used those methods to study the topological phases the anyons form when they braid around one another. In the first phase of my thesis, I extended the anyonic tensor network algorithms, by incorporating U(1) symmetry to give a modified ansatz, Anyon-U(1) tensor networks, which are capable of simulating anyonic systems at any rational filling fraction. In the second phase, I used the n…

Ultracold Fermi gases trapped in honeycomb optical lattices provide an intriguing scenario, where relativistic quantum electrodynamics can be tested. Here, we generalize this system to non-Abelian quantum electrodynamics, where massless Dirac fermions interact with effective non-Abelian gauge fields. We show how in this setup a variety of topological phase transitions occur, which arise due to massless fermion pair production events, as well as pair annihilation events of two kinds: spontaneous and strongly-interacting induced. Moreover, such phase transitions can be controlled and characteriz…
Quantum gates in topological quantum computation are performed by braiding non-Abelian anyons. These braiding processes can presumably be performed with very low error rates. However, to make a topological quantum computation architecture truly scalable, even rare errors need to be corrected. Error correction for non-Abelian anyons is complicated by the fact that it needs to be performed on a continuous basis and further errors may occur while we are correcting existing ones. Here, we provide the first study of this problem and prove its feasibility, establishing non-Abelian anyons as a viable…
We propose a scheme to probe the non-Abelian statistics of the collective anyonic excitation in Kitaev's honeycomb model with cold atoms in an optical lattice. The generation of the anyonic excitation can be realized by simple rotating operation acting on an effective spin-1/2 system, which is encoded in the atomic hyperfine energy levels. The non-Abelian nature of the anyonic excitation is manifested by the braiding of four vortices, which leads to different operations on the subspace of degenerate ground states, and thus results in different final states. Here, by introducing an ancilla atom…
In this thesis I develop a formalism whereby a tensor network may be understood in terms of a unitary braided tensor category, and represented in a particularly efficient manner corresponding to the exploitation of this mathematical structure. This approach permits the exploitation of the global Abelian and non-Abelian internal group symmetries of a lattice model, both to facilitate the study of particular symmetry sectors and to provide a considerable reduction in computational cost. It also enables the study of models with non-trivial exchange statistics (fermions, Abelian and non-Abelian an…
Quantum ladder models, consisting of coupled chains, form intriguing systems bridging one and two dimensions and have been well studied in the context of quantum magnets and fermionic systems. Here we consider ladder systems made of more exotic quantum mechanical degrees of freedom, so-called non-Abelian anyons, which can be thought of as certain quantum deformations of ordinary SU(2) spins. Such non-Abelian anyons occur as quasiparticle excitations in topological quantum fluids, including p_x + i p_y superconductors, certain fractional quantum Hall states, and rotating Bose-Einstein condensat…
It is well known that the abelian $Z_2$ anyonic model (toric code) can be realized on a highly entangled two-dimensional spin lattice, where the anyons are quasiparticles located at the endpoints of string-like concatenations of Pauli operators. Here we show that the same entangled states of the same lattice are capable of supporting the non-abelian Ising model, where the concatenated operators are elements of the Clifford group. The Ising anyons are shown to be essentially superpositions of the abelian toric code anyons, reproducing the required fusion, braiding and statistical properties. We…
