Notwithstanding the long and distinguished history of studies of vibrational energy relaxation, exactly how it is that high frequency vibrations manage to relax in a liquid remains somewhat of a mystery. Both experimental and theoretical approaches seem to say that there is a natural frequency range associated with intermolecular motions in liquids, typically spanning no more than a few hundred cm^{-1}. Landau-Teller-like theories explain how a solvent can absorb any vibrational energy within this "band", but how is it that molecules can rid themselves of superfluous vibrational energies significantly in excess of these values? We develop a theory for such processes based on the idea that the crucial liquid motions are those that most rapidly modulate the force on the vibrating coordinate -- and that by far the most important of these motions are those involving what we have called the mutual nearest neighbors of the vibrating solute. Specifically, we suggest that whenever there is a single solvent molecule sufficiently close to the solute that the solvent and solute are each other's nearest neighbors, then the instantaneous scattering dynamics of the solute-solvent pair alone suffices to explain the high frequency relaxation. The many-body features of the liquid only appear in the guise of a purely equilibrium problem, that of finding the likelihood of particularly effective solvent arrangements around the solute. These results are tested numerically on model diatomic solutes dissolved in atomic fluids (including the experimentally and theoretically interesting case of I_2 in Xe). The instantaneous pair theory leads to results in quantitative agreement with those obtained from far more laborious exact molecular dynamics simulations.
Representation of molecular vibrational degrees of freedom by independent harmonic oscillators, when describing electronic spectra or electronic excitation energy transport, raises unfavourable effects as vibrational energy relaxation becomes inaccessible. A standard theoretical description is extended in this paper by including both electronic-phonon and vibrational-phonon couplings. Using this approach we have simulated a model pigment-protein system and have shown that intermode coupling leads to the quenching of pigment vibrational modes, and to the redistribution of fluctuation spectral d…
A theory of vibrational energy relaxation based on a semiclassical treatment of the quantum master equation is presented. Using new results on the semiclassical expansion of dipole matrix elements, we show that in the classical limit the master equation reduces to the Zwanzig energy diffusion equation. The leading quantum corrections are determined and discussed for the harmonic and Morse potentials.
Within a 2-D scattering model, we investigate the vibrational relaxation of an idealized molecule colliding with a metal surface. Two perturbative nonadiabatic dynamics schemes are compared: $(i)$ electronic friction (EF) and $(ii)$ classical master equations (CME). In addition, we also study a third approach, $(iii)$ a broadened classical master equation (BCME) that interpolates between approaches $(i)$ and $(ii)$. Two conclusions emerge. First, even though we do not have exact data to compare against, we find there is strong evidence suggesting that EF results may be spurious for scattering …
Experimental observations of multi-quantum relaxation of highly vibrationally excited NO scattering from Au(111) are a benchmark for the breakdown of Born-Oppenheimer approximation in molecule-surface systems. This remarkable vibrational inelasticity was long thought to be almost exclusively mediated by electron transfer; but, no theories have quantitatively reproduced various experimental data. This was suggested to be due to errors in the adiabatic potential energy surface (PES) used in those studies. Here, we investigate electronically adiabatic molecular dynamics of this system with a glob…
For a small fraction of hot CO2 molecules immersed in a liquid-phase CO2 thermal bath, classical cavity molecular dynamics simulations show that forming collective vibrational strong coupling (VSC) between the C=O asymmetric stretch of CO2 molecules and a cavity mode accelerates hot-molecule relaxation. The physical mechanism underlying this acceleration is the fact that polaritons, especially the lower polariton, can be transiently excited during the nonequilibrium process, which facilitates intermolecular vibrational energy transfer. The VSC effects on these rates (i) resonantly depend on th…
The physics of vibrational kinetics in nitrogen-containing plasma produced by collisions with electrons is studied on the basis of recently derived cross sections and rate coefficients for the resonant vibrational-excitation by electron-impact. The temporal relaxation of the vibrational energy and of the vibrational distribution function is analyzed in a state-to-state approach. The electron and vibrational temperature are varied in the range of [0,50000] K. Conclusions are drawn with respect to the derivation of reduced models and to the accuracy of a relaxation time formalism. A analytical f…
Vibrational dephasing of nitrogen molecule is known to show highly interesting anomalies near its gas-liquid critical point. Here we present theoretical and computational studies of the Raman linewidth of nitrogen along the critical isochore. The linewidth is found to have a lambda shaped temperature dependence near the critical point. As observed in experimental studies, the calculated lineshape becomes Gaussian as the critical temperature ($T_{c}$) is approached. Both the present simulation and a mode coupling theory (MCT) analysis show that the slow decay of the enhanced density fluctuation…
We present a new theoretical method to treat atom-rigid bender inelastic collisions at the Close Coupling level (RBCC) in the space fixed frame. The coupling between rotation and bending is treated exactly within the rigid bender approximation and we obtain the cross section for the rotational transition between levels belonging to different bending levels. The results of this approach are compared with those obtained when using the rigid bender averaged approximation (RBAA) introduced in our previous work dedicated to this system. We discuss the validity of this approximation and of the previ…
Time-resolved XUV-IR photoion mass spectroscopy of naphthalene conducted with broadband, as well as with wavelength-selected narrowband XUV pulses reveals a rising probability of fragmentation characterized by a lifetime of $92\pm4$~fs. This lifetime is independent of the XUV excitation wavelength and is the same for all low appearance energy fragments recorded in the experiment. Analysis of the experimental data in conjunction with a statistical multi-state vibronic model suggests that the experimental signals track vibrational energy redistribution on the potential energy surface of the grou…
The kinetics and vibrational relaxation of the ${\rm N}(^4S) +{\rm O}_2(X^3Σ^-_g) \leftrightarrow {\rm O}(^3P) + {\rm NO}(X^2Π)$ reaction is investigated over a wide temperature range based on quasiclassical trajectory simulations on 3-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the lowest three electronic states. Reference energies at the multi reference configuration interaction level are represented as a reproducing kernel and the topology of the PESs is rationalized by analyzing the CASSCF wavefunction of the relevant states. The forward rate matches one measurement at 1575 K and is s…
Employing extensive quantum-chemical calculations at the DFT/B3LYP and MP2 level, a quartic force field of isolated N-methylacetamide is constructed. Taking into account 24 vibrational degrees of freedom, the model is employed to perform numerically exact vibrational configuration interaction calculations of the vibrational energy relaxation of the amide I mode. It is found that the energy transfer pathways may sensitively depend on details of the theoretical description. Moreover, the exact reference calculations were used to study the applicability and accuracy of (i) the quasiclassical traj…
Vibrational dynamics of adsorbates near surfaces plays both an important role for applied surface science and as model lab for studying fundamental problems of open quantum systems. We employ a previously developed model for the relaxation of a D-Si-Si bending mode at a D:Si(100)-(2$\times$1) surface, induced by a "bath" of more than $2000$ phonon modes [U. Lorenz, P. Saalfrank, Chem. Phys. {\bf 482}, 69 (2017)], to extend previous work along various directions. First, we use a Hierarchical Effective Mode (HEM) model [E.W. Fischer, F. Bouakline, M. Werther, P. Saalfrank, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 15…
The interplay between nuclear and electronic degrees of freedom strongly influences molecular charge transport. Herein, we report on transport through a porphyrin dimer molecule, weakly coupled to graphene electrodes, that displays sequential tunneling within the Coulomb-blockade regime. The sequential transport is initiated by current-induced phonon absorption and proceeds by rapid sequential transport via a non-equilibrium vibrational distribution. We demonstrate this is possible only when the vibrational dissipation is slow relative to sequential tunneling rates, and obtain a lower bound fo…
A computational approach to describe the energy relaxation of a high-frequency vibrational mode in a fluctuating heterogeneous environment is outlined. Extending previous work [H. Fujisaki, Y. Zhang, and J.E. Straub, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 124}, 144910 (2006)], second-order time-dependent perturbation theory is employed which includes the fluctuations of the parameters in the Hamiltonian within the vibrational adiabatic approximation. This means that the time-dependent vibrational frequencies along an MD trajectory are obtained via a partial geometry optimization of the solute with fixed solvent …
Thermal rates for the C($^3$P) + O$_2$($^3 Σ_g^-$) $\leftrightarrow$ CO($^1 Σ^+$)+ O($^1$D)/O($^3$P) reaction are investigated over a wide temperature range based on quasi classical trajectory (QCT) simulations on 3-dimensional, reactive potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the $^1$A$'$, $(2)^1$A$'$, $^1$A$''$, $^3$A$'$ and $^3$A$''$ states. The forward rate matches measurements at 15 K to 295 K whereas the equilibrium constant determined from the forward and reverse rates are consistent with those derived from statistical mechanics at high temperature. Vibrational relaxation, O+CO($ν=1, 2$) $…
We generalize our previous theory [Nano Lett. \textbf{18}, 5015-5023 (2018)] to investigate the influence of electron-phonon (e-p) coupling and vibrational relaxation on photoinduced \textit{anomalous Coulomb blockade}, which originates from the triplet states and the energy level alignment. We derive the master equation for an irradiated molecular transistor and obtain the relevant rates via the Redfield theory instead of the phenomenological Fermi golden rule approach. To explore the interplay between e-p coupling and vibrational relaxation, we analyze the charge stability diagrams and the c…
We investigate ballistic vibrational energy transport through optical phonon band in oligomeric chains in the presence of decoherence. An exact solution is obtained for the excitation density in the space-time representation in the continuous limit and this solution is used to characterize the energy transport time and intensity. Three transport mechanisms are identified such as ballistic, diffusive and directed diffusive regimes, occurring at different distances and time ranges. The crossover between the two diffusive regimes is continuous, while the switch between the ballistic and diffusive…
We study the relaxation dynamics of photoexcited Fe-II complexes dissolved in water and identify the relaxation pathway which the molecular complex follows in presence of a hydration shell of bound water at the interface between the complex and the solvent. Starting from a low-spin state, the photoexcited complex can reach the high-spin state via a cascade of different possible transitions involving electronic as well as vibrational relaxation processes. By numerically exact path integral calculations for the relaxational dynamics of a continuous solvent model, we find that the vibrational lif…
Under vibrational strong coupling (VSC), the formation of molecular polaritons may significantly modify the photo-induced or thermal properties of molecules. In an effort to understand these intriguing modifications, both experimental and theoretical studies have focused on the ultrafast dynamics of vibrational polaritons. Here, following our recent work [J. Chem. Phys., 154, 094124, (2021)], we systematically study the mechanism of polariton relaxation for liquid CO2 under a weak external pumping. Classical cavity molecular dynamics (CavMD) simulations show that polariton relaxation results f…
Finding the causes for the nonstatistical vibrational energy relaxation in the planar carbonyl sulfide (OCS) molecule is a longstanding problem in chemical physics: Not only is the relaxation incomplete long past the predicted statistical relaxation time, but it also consists of a sequence of abrupt transitions between long-lived regions of localized energy modes. We report on the phase space bottlenecks responsible for this slow and uneven vibrational energy flow in this Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom. They belong to a particular class of two-dimensional invariant tori which…
Molecular adsorbates on metal surfaces exchange energy with substrate phonons and low-lying electron-hole pair excitations. In the limit of weak coupling, electron-hole pair excitations can be seen as exerting frictional forces on adsorbates that enhance energy transfer and facilitate vibrational relaxation or hot-electron mediated chemistry. We have recently reported on the relevance of tensorial properties of electronic friction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 217601 (2016)] in dynamics at surfaces. Here we present the underlying implementation of tensorial electronic friction based on Kohn-Sham Dens…
We explore an instantaneous decoherence correction (IDC) approach for the decoherence and energy relaxation in the quantum-classical dynamics of charge transport in organic semiconducting crystals. These effects, originating from environmental fluctuations, are essential ingredients of the carrier dynamics. The IDC is carried out by measurement-like operations in the adiabatic representation. While decoherence is inherent in the IDC, energy relaxation is taken into account by considering the detailed balance through the introduction of energy-dependent reweighing factors, which could be either…
NO scattering from metallic and insulating surfaces represent contrasting benchmark systems for understanding energy transfer at gas-surface interface. Strikingly different behaviors of highly vibrationally excited NO scattered from Au(111) and LiF(001) were observed and attributed to disparate electronic structures between metals and insulators. Here, we reveal an alternative mechanical origin of this discrepancy by comparative molecular dynamics simulations with globally accurate adiabatic neural network potentials of both systems. We find that highly-vibrating NO can reach for the high diss…
Dependence of energy relaxation and vibrational coherence on the location of light-harvesting chromoproteins in photosynthetic antenna protein complexes
A high-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) for CO interaction with the Au(111) surface is developed using a machine-learning algorithm. Including both molecular and surface coordinates, this PES enables the simulation of the recent experiment on scattering of vibrationally excited CO from Au(111). Trapping in a physisorption well is observed to increase with decreasing incidence energy. While energy dissipation of physisorbed CO is slow, due to weak coupling with both the phonons and electron-hole pairs, its access to the chemisorption well facilitates fast vibrational relaxation of CO …
Organic-inorganic layered perovskites are two-dimensional quantum wells with layers of lead-halide octahedra stacked between organic ligand barriers. The combination of their dielectric confinement and ionic sublattice results in excitonic excitations with substantial binding energies that are strongly coupled to the surrounding soft, polar lattice. However, the ligand environment in layered perovskites can significantly alter their optical properties due to the complex dynamic disorder of soft perovskite lattice. Here, we observe the dynamic disorder through phonon dephasing lifetimes initiat…
Photoelectron circular dichroism (PECD) is a highly sensitive enantiospecific spectroscopy for studying chiral molecules in the gas phase using either single-photon ionization or multiphoton ionization. In the short pulse limit investigated with femtosecond lasers, resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization (REMPI) is rather instantaneous and typically occurs simultaneously via more than one vibrational or electronic intermediate state due to limited frequency resolution. In contrast, vibrational resolution in the REMPI spectrum can be achieved using nanosecond lasers. In this work, we follow t…
This article presents a study of the excited state relaxation dynamics of N-salycylidene-o-aminophenol (SOAP) in ethanol solution. Femtosecond transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy and theoretical calculations are used in combination to establish the mechanism of the excited state relaxation and type of molecular species involved in the accompanying phototransformations. TA spectra show that upon photoexcitation two SOAP tautomers (E-enol and Z-keto) interconvert by ESIPT. The molecule can subsequently isomerize to the E-keto form of SOAP. An intriguing observation is that the TA spectra of t…
We {\it analytically} investigate the population and coherence dynamics and relaxations in the vibrational energy transport in molecules. The corresponding two time scales $t_1$ and $t_2$ are explored. Coherence-population entanglement is found to considerably promote the time scale $t_2$ for dephasing and the amplitude of coherence. This is attributed to the suppression of the environment-induced drift force by coherence. Moreover the population imbalance (magnetization) is shown to be significantly amplified with the coherence-population entanglement. Contrary to the previous studies, we exa…
Electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom in atom-cluster collisions are treated simultaneously and self-consistently by combining time-dependent density functional theory with classical molecular dynamics. The gradual change of the excitation mechanisms (electronic and vibrational) as well as the related relaxation phenomena (phase transitions and fragmentation) are studied in a common framework as a function of the impact energy (eV...MeV). Cluster "transparency" characterized by practically undisturbed atom-cluster penetration is predicted to be an important reaction mechanism within a …
Infrared pump-probe spectroscopy provides detailed information on the dynamics of hydrogen-bonded liquids. Due to dissipation of the absorbed pump pulse energy, also thermal equilibration dynamics contributes to the observed signal. Disentangling this contribution from the molecular response remains an open challenge. Performing non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulat ions of liquid deuterated methanol, we show that faster molecular vibrational relaxation and slower heat diffusion are decoupled and occur on different length scale. Transient structures of the hydrogen bonding network influen…
We study transfer of coherent nuclear oscillations between an excitation energy donor and an acceptor in a simple dimeric electronic system coupled to an unstructured thermodynamic bath and some pronounced vibrational intramolecular mode. Our focus is on the non-linear optical response of such a system, i.e. we study both excited state energy transfer and the compensation of the so-called ground state bleach signal. The response function formalism enables us to investigate a heterodimer with monomers coupled strongly to the bath and by a weak resonance coupling to each other (Förster rate limi…
We describe a parallel linear-scaling computational framework developed to implement arbitrarily large multi-state empirical valence bond (MS-EVB) calculations within CHARMM. Forces are obtained using the Hellman-Feynmann relationship, giving continuous gradients, and excellent energy conservation. Utilizing multi-dimensional Gaussian coupling elements fit to CCSD(T)-F12 electronic structure theory, we built a 64-state MS-EVB model designed to study the F + CD3CN -> DF + CD2CN reaction in CD3CN solvent. This approach allows us to build a reactive potential energy surface (PES) whose balanced a…
A simple model to predict the directionality of vibrational energy flow at molecular level is presented. This model is based on a vibrational energy propagation analysis using ab intio molecular dynamics and the Fukui function and local softness reactivity indexes derived from DFT. By using this simple conceptual model we are giving a cogent rationale to previous theoretical and experimental reports of asymmetrical vibrational energy diffusion in proteins and energetic materials. We proposed here three basic rules for the Vibrational Energy Relaxation in molecules: (i) the vibrational energy f…
The transition between the gas-, supercritical-, and liquid-phase behaviour is a fascinating topic which still lacks molecular-level understanding. Recent ultrafast two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy experiments suggested that the vibrational spectroscopy of N$_2$O embedded in xenon and SF$_6$ as solvents provides an avenue to characterize the transitions between different phases as the concentration (or density) of the solvent increases. The present work demonstrates that classical molecular dynamics simulations together with accurate interaction potentials allows to (semi-)quantitatively …
Transient grating acoustic spectroscopy has been applied to studies on the vibrational energy relaxation process of the electronic ground state of azulene, two 1-alkylazulenes, and five bridged azulene-anthracenes in three different solvents: 1,1,1-trichloro-1,2,2-trifluoroethane, acetonitrile, and xenon. The solute molecule was vibrationally excited by the photo-excitation of the auzlenyl group to the S1 state through the fast internal conversion, and the rate of solvent thermalization due to the vibrational energy relaxation was determined. The thermalization rates for 1-alkylazulenes and br…

The coupled exciton-vibrational dynamics of a three-site model of the FMO complex is investigated using the Multi-layer Multi-configuration Time-dependent Hartree (ML-MCTDH) approach. Emphasis is put on the effect of the spectral density on the exciton state populations as well as on the vibrational and vibronic non-equilibrium excitations. Models which use either a single or site-specific spectral densities are contrasted to a spectral density adapted from experiment. For the transfer efficiency, the total integrated Huang-Rhys factor is found to be more important than details of the spectral…

Calculations of time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy from a pair of chromophores coupled by an excitation transfer interaction are presented. For the purpose of investigating the effects of nuclear motion on the energy transfer and anisotropy, an illustrative model is developed that provides each chromophore with a single intramolecular vibrational mode. Account is taken of non-instantaneous excitation and time- and frequency-resolved detection. Effects of excitation pulse duration, detection window duration and frequency resolution, and excitation transfer coupling strength on the time-resol…
We study the effect of an internal rotor on the classical and quantum intramolecular vibrational energy redistribution (IVR) dynamics of a model system with three degrees of freedom. The system is based on a Hamiltonian proposed by Martens and Reinhardt (J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 93}, 5621 (1990).) to study IVR in the excited electronic state of para-fluorotoluene. We explicitly construct the state space and show, confirming the mechanism proposed by Martens and Reinhardt, that an excited high frequency mode relaxes via diffusion along a thick layer of chaos created by the low frequency-rotor intera…
The existing molecular relaxation models based on both parallel relaxation theory and series relaxation theory cannot extract the contributions of gas compositions to acoustic relaxation absorption in mixtures. In this paper, we propose an analytical model to predict acoustic relaxation absorption and clarify composition relaxation contributions based on the rate-determining energy transfer processes in molecular relaxation in excitable gases. By combining parallel and series relaxation theory, the proposed model suggests that the vibration-translation process of the lowest vibrational mode in…
