Employing extensive quantum-chemical calculations at the DFT/B3LYP and MP2 level, a quartic force field of isolated N-methylacetamide is constructed. Taking into account 24 vibrational degrees of freedom, the model is employed to perform numerically exact vibrational configuration interaction calculations of the vibrational energy relaxation of the amide I mode. It is found that the energy transfer pathways may sensitively depend on details of the theoretical description. Moreover, the exact reference calculations were used to study the applicability and accuracy of (i) the quasiclassical trajectory method, (ii) time-dependent second-order perturbation theory, and (iii) the instantaneous normal mode description of frequency fluctuations. Based on the results, several strategies to describe vibrational energy relaxation in biomolecular systems are discussed.
A machine learning algorithm for partitioning the nuclear vibrational space into subspaces is introduced. The subdivision criterion is based on Liouville's theorem, i.e. best preservation of the unitary of the reduced dimensionality Jacobian determinant within each subspace along a probe full-dimensional classical trajectory. The algorithm is based on the idea of evolutionary selection and it is implemented through a probability graph representation of the vibrational space partitioning. We interface this customized version of genetic algorithms with our divide-and-conquer semiclassical initia…
A computational approach to describe the energy relaxation of a high-frequency vibrational mode in a fluctuating heterogeneous environment is outlined. Extending previous work [H. Fujisaki, Y. Zhang, and J.E. Straub, J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 124}, 144910 (2006)], second-order time-dependent perturbation theory is employed which includes the fluctuations of the parameters in the Hamiltonian within the vibrational adiabatic approximation. This means that the time-dependent vibrational frequencies along an MD trajectory are obtained via a partial geometry optimization of the solute with fixed solvent …
Vibrationally resolved spectra provide a stringent test of the accuracy of theoretical calculations. We combine the thawed Gaussian approximation (TGA) with an on-the-fly ab initio (OTF-AI) scheme to calculate the vibrationally resolved emission spectra of oligothiophenes with up to five rings. The efficiency of the OTF-AI-TGA permits treating all vibrational degrees of freedom on an equal footing even in pentathiophene with 105 vibrational degrees of freedom, thus obviating the need for the global harmonic approximation, popular for large systems. Besides reproducing almost perfectly the expe…
The automated development of a new ab initio full-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) is reported for the CH$_4\cdot$F$^-$ complex using the ROBOSURFER program package. The new potential provides a near-spectroscopic quality description over a broad configuration range including the methane-ion dissociation, as well as isolated methane vibrations. In particular, it improves upon the earlier [Czakó, Braams, Bowman (2008)] PES over intermediate methane-fluoride distances. Full-dimensional (12D) variational vibrational computations using the new PES and the GENIUSH-Smolyak algorithm show t…
Two new nine-dimensional potential energy surfaces (PESs) have been generated using high-level \textit{ab initio} theory for the two main isotopologues of methyl chloride, CH$_{3}{}^{35}$Cl and CH$_{3}{}^{37}$Cl. The respective PESs, CBS-35$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$ and CBS-37$^{\,\mathrm{HL}}$, are based on explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations with extrapolation to the complete basis set (CBS) limit, and incorporate a range of higher-level (HL) additive energy corrections to account for core-valence electron correlation, higher-order coupled cluster terms, scalar relativistic effects, a…
We present a perturbative method for ab initio calculations of rotational and rovibrational effective Hamiltonians of both rigid and non-rigid molecules. Our approach is based on a curvilinear implementation of second order vibrational Møller-Plesset perturbation theory (VMP2) extended to include rotational effects via a second order contact transformation. Though more expensive, this approach is significantly more accurate than standard second order vibrational perturbation theory (VPT2) for systems that are poorly described to zeroth order by rectilinear normal mode harmonic oscillators. We …
In this article, we propose a generalized model for nonequilibrium vibrational energy distribution functions. The model can be used, in place of equilibrium (Boltzmann) distribution functions, when deriving reaction rate constants for high-temperature nonequilibrium flows. The distribution model is derived based on recent \textit{ab initio} calculations, carried out using potential energy surfaces developed using accurate computational quantum chemistry techniques for the purpose of studying air chemistry at high temperatures. Immediately behind a strong shock wave, the vibrational energy dist…
Collective protein modes are expected to be important for facilitating energy transfer in the Fenna-Matthews-Olson (FMO) complex, however to date little work has focussed on the microscopic details of these vibrations. The nonlinear network model (NNM) provides a computationally inexpensive approach to studying vibrational modes at the microscopic level, whilst incorporating anharmonicity in the inter-residue interactions which can influence protein dynamics. We apply the NNM to the FMO complex and find evidence for the existence of nonlinear discrete breather modes. These modes tend to transf…
We analyze how to obtain non-resonant and resonant Raman spectra within the Placzek as well as the Albrecht approximation. Both approximations are derived from the matrix element for light scattering by application of the Kramers, Heisenberg and Dirac formula. It is shown that the Placzek expression results from a semi-classical approximation of the combined electronic and vibrational transition energies. Molecular hydrogen, water and butadiene are studied as test cases. It turns out that the Placzek approximation agrees qualitatively with the more accurate Albrecht formulation even in the res…
Molecular adsorbates on metal surfaces exchange energy with substrate phonons and low-lying electron-hole pair excitations. In the limit of weak coupling, electron-hole pair excitations can be seen as exerting frictional forces on adsorbates that enhance energy transfer and facilitate vibrational relaxation or hot-electron mediated chemistry. We have recently reported on the relevance of tensorial properties of electronic friction [Phys. Rev. Lett. 116, 217601 (2016)] in dynamics at surfaces. Here we present the underlying implementation of tensorial electronic friction based on Kohn-Sham Dens…
A new dipole moment surface (DMS) for methyl chloride has been generated at the CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ(+d for Cl) level of theory. To represent the DMS, a symmetry-adapted analytic representation in terms of nine vibrational coordinates has been developed and implemented. Variational calculations of the infrared spectrum of CH$_3$Cl show good agreement with a range of experimental results. This includes vibrational transition moments, absolute line intensities of the $ν_1$, $ν_4$, $ν_5$ and $3ν_6$ bands, and a rotation-vibration line list for both CH$_{3}{}^{35}$Cl and CH$_{3}{}^{37}$Cl including…
The atomistic resolution recently achieved by ultrafast spectroscopies demands corresponding theoretical advances. Real-time time-dependent density-functional theory (RT-TDDFT) with Ehrenfest dynamics offers an optimal trade-off between accuracy and computational costs to study electronic and vibrational dynamics of laser-excited materials in the sub-picosecond regime. However, this approach is unable to account for thermal effects or zero-point energies which are crucial in the physics involved. Herein, we adopt a quantum-semiclassical method based on RT-TDDFT+Ehrenfest to simulate laser-indu…
A new nine-dimensional (9D), \textit{ab initio} electric dipole moment surface (DMS) of methane in its ground electronic state is presented. The DMS is computed using an explicitly correlated coupled cluster CCSD(T)-F12 method in conjunction with an F12-optimized correlation consistent basis set of the TZ-family. A symmetrized molecular bond representation is used to parameterise the 9D DMS in terms of sixth-order polynomials. Vibrational transition moments as well as band intensities for a large number of IR-active vibrational bands of $^{12}$CH$_4$ are computed by vibrationally averaging the…
High-throughput approaches for producing approximate vibrational spectral data for molecules of astrochemistry interest rely on scaled harmonic frequency calculations. However, level of theory and basis set pair recommendations for these calculations are not yet available and thus benchmarking against comprehensive benchmark databases is needed. Here, we present a new database for vibrational frequency calculations (VIBFREQ1295) storing 1,295 experimental fundamental frequencies and CCSD(T)(F12*)/cc-pVDZ-F12 ab initio harmonic frequencies from 141 molecules. VIBFREQ1295's experimental data was…
A very accurate, (HF)$_2$ potential energy surface (PES) due to Huang et al. (J. Chem. Phys., 150, 154302 (2019)) is used to calculate the energy levels of the HF dimer by solving the nuclear-motion Schrödinger equation using variational program WAVR4. Calculations on an extended range of rotational states show very good agreement with experimental data. In particular the known empirical rotational constants for the ground and some observed excited vibrational states are reproduced with an accuracy of about 50 MHz. This level of accuracy is shown to extend to higher excited inter-molecular vib…
We present a study of dissociative electron attachment and vibrational excitation processes in electron collisions with the CF$_3$Cl molecule. The calculations are based on the two-dimensional nuclear dynamics including the C-Cl symmetric stretch coordinate and the CF$_3$ symmetric deformation (umbrella) coordinate. The complex potential energy surfaces are calculated using the ab initio R-matrix method. The results for dissociative attachment and vibrational excitation of the umbrella mode agree quite well with experiment while the cross section for excitation of the C-Cl symmetric stretch vi…
Intensities of all fine-structure resolved rovibrational electric quadrupole absorption lines in $^{16}$O$_2$($X^{3}Σ^{-}_{g}$) calculated with a new $\textit{ab initio}$ quadrupole moment curve
Rovibrational quantum states in the $X^1Σ_g^+$ electronic ground state of H$_2$ are prepared in the $v=13$ vibrational level up to its highest bound rotational level $J=7$, and in the highest bound vibrational level $v=14$ (for $J=1$) by two-photon photolysis of H$_2$S. These states are laser-excited in a subsequent two-photon scheme into $F^1Σ_g^+$ outer well states, where the assignment of the highest ($v,J$) states is derived from a comparison of experimentally known levels in \F, combined with \emph{ab initio} calculations of \X\ levels. The assignments are further verified by excitation o…
Bayesian Model Calibration is used to revisit the problem of scaling factor calibration for semi-empirical correction of ab initio calculations. A particular attention is devoted to uncertainty evaluation for scaling factors, and to their effect on prediction of observables involving scaled properties. We argue that linear models used for calibration of scaling factors are generally not statistically valid, in the sense that they are not able to fit calibration data within their uncertainty limits. Uncertainty evaluation and uncertainty propagation by statistical methods from such invalid mode…
The MIRS software for the modeling of ro-vibrational spectra of polyatomic molecules was considerably extended and improved. The original version (Nikitin, et al. JQSRT, 2003, pp. 239--249) was especially designed for separate or simultaneous treatments of complex band systems of polyatomic molecules. It was set up in the frame of effective polyad models by using algorithms based on advanced group theory algebra to take full account of symmetry properties. It has been successfully used for predictions and data fitting (positions and intensities) of numerous spectra of symmetric and spherical t…
We present the first variational calculation of a hot temperature ab initio line list for the CH$_3$ radical. It is based on a high level ab initio potential energy surface and dipole moment surface of CH$_3$ in the ground electronic state. The ro-vibrational energy levels and Einstein $A$ coefficients were calculated using the general-molecule variational approach implemented in the computer program TROVE. Vibrational energies and vibrational intensities are found to be in very good agreement with the available experimental data. The line list comprises 9,127,123 ro-vibrational states ($J\le …
Theoretical calculations are contributing a significantly higher proportion of data to contemporary spectroscopic databases, which have traditionally relied on experimental observations and semi-empirical models. It is now a common procedure to extend calculated line lists to include ro-vibrational transitions between all bound states of the ground electronic state up to the dissociation limit. Advanced ab initio methods are utilized to calculate the potential energy and dipole moment surfaces (PESs and DMSs), and semi-empirical PESs are then obtained by combining ab initio and experimental da…
Recent years have seen significant developments in the study of strong light-matter coupling including the control of chemical reactions by altering the vibrational normal modes of molecules. In the vibrational strong coupling regime the normal modes of the system become hybrid modes which mix nuclear, electronic, and photonic degrees of freedom. First principles methods capable of treating light and matter degrees of freedom on the same level of theory are an important tool in understanding such systems. In this work, we develop and apply a generalized force constant matrix approach to the st…
We present an efficient approach for generating highly accurate molecular potential energy surfaces (PESs) using self-correcting, kernel ridge regression (KRR) based machine learning (ML). We introduce structure-based sampling to automatically assign nuclear configurations from a pre-defined grid to the training and prediction sets, respectively. Accurate high-level \textit{ab initio} energies are required only for the points in the training set, while the energies for the remaining points are provided by the ML model with negligible computational cost. The proposed sampling procedure is shown…
Cavity-modified electronic interactions in molecular ensembles under vibrational strong coupling: Combined insights from cavity Born-Oppenheimer perturbation and ab initio wave function theories
A recombination reaction model for high-temperature chemical kinetics is derived from ab initio simulations data. A kinetic recombination rate model is derived using a recently developed ab initio state-specific dissociation model and the principle of microscopic reversibility. When atoms recombine, the kinetic rate model shows that product molecules have high favoring for high vibrational energy states. A continuum recombination rate model is then derived analytically from the kinetic recombination rate model. Similarly, the expression for the average vibrational energy of recombining molecul…
Relativistic ab initio study on the spectroscopic and radiative properties of the lowest states and modeling of the optical cycles for the LiFr molecule
Large-amplitude molecular motions which occur during isomerization can cause significant changes in electronic structure. These variations in electronic properties can be used to identify vibrationally-excited eigenstates which are localized along the potential energy surface. This work demonstrates that nuclear quadrupole hyperfine interactions can be used as a diagnostic marker of progress along the isomerization path in both the HC14N/H14NC and DC15N/D15NC chemical systems. Ab initio calculations at the CCSD(T)/cc-pCVQZ level indicate that the hyperfine interaction is extremely sensitive to…
A new line list for hydronium (H$_3$$^{16}$O$^+$) is computed. The line list is based on a new ab initio dipole moment surface (CCSD(T)/aug-cc-pVQZ) and a new empirical potential energy surface (PES). The empirical PES of H$_3$O$^+$ was obtained by refining an ab initio surface through a global fit to the experimentally determined ro-vibrational energies collected from the literature covering the ground, $ν_1^{\pm}$, $ν_2^{\pm}$, $2ν_2^{\pm}$, $ν_3^{\pm}$ and $ν_4^{\pm}$ vibrational states. The line list covers the wavenumber range up to 10 000 cm$^{-1}$ (wavelengths $>1 μ$m) and should be com…
Vibrational energies and wave functions of the triplet state of the H3+ ion have been determined. In the calculations, the ground and first excited triplet electronic states are included as well as the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling between them. A diabatization procedure transforming the two adiabatic ab initio potential energy surfaces of the triplet-H3+ state into a 2x2 matrix is employed. The diabatization takes into account the non-Born-Oppenheimer coupling and the effect of the geometrical phase due to the conical intersection between the two adiabatic potential surfaces. The results are …
Several methods are available to compute the anharmonicity in semi-rigid molecules. However, such methods are not routinely employed yet because of their large computational cost, especially for large molecules. The potential energy surface is required and generally approximated by a quartic force field potential based on ab initio calculation, thus limiting this approach to medium-sized molecules. We developed a new, fast and accurate hybrid Quantum Mechanic/Machine learning (QM//ML) approach to reduce the computational time for large systems. With this novel approach, we evaluated anharmonic…
Spectroscopic and structural properties of methoxymethyl radical (CH$_3$OCH$_2$, RDME) are determined using explicitly correlated ab initio methods. This radical of astrophysical and atmospheric relevance has not been fully characterized at low temperatures, which has delayed the astrophysical searches. We provide rovibrational parameters, excitations to the low energy electronic states, torsional and inversion barriers and low vibrational energy levels. In the electronic ground state (X$^2$A), which appears "clean" from non-adiabatic effects, the minimum energy structure is an asymmetric geom…
A dihydrogen Hamiltonian reduces to the Sommerfeld-Kratzer-potential, adapted for field quantization according to old-quantum theory. Constants omega_e, k_e and r_e needed for the H_2 vibrational system derive solely from hydrogen mass m_H. For H_2, a first principles ionic Kratzer oscillator returns the covalent bond energy within 0,08 % and all levels within 0,02 %, 30 times better than the Dunham oscillator and as accurate as early ab initio QM.

This perspective provides a brief introduction into the theoretical complexity of polaritonic chemistry, which emerges from the hybrid nature of strongly coupled light-matter states. To tackle this complexity, the importance of ab initio methods is highlighted. Based on those, novel ideas and research avenues are developed with respect to quantum collectivity, as well as for resonance phenomena immanent in reaction rates under vibrational strong coupling. Indeed, fundamental theoretical questions arise about the mesoscopic scale of quantum-collectively coupled molecules, when considering the d…
We propose an accurate and efficient method to compute vibrational spectra of molecules, based on exact diagonalization of an algebraically calculated matrix based on powers of Morse coordinate. The present work focuses on the 1D potential of diatomic molecules: as typical examples, we apply this method to the standard Lennard-Jones oscillator, and to the ab initio potential of the H2 molecule. Global cm-1 accuracy is exhibited through the H2 spectrum, obtained through the diagonalization of a 30 x 30 matrix. This theory is at the root of a new method to obtain globally accurate vibrational sp…
We perform a systematic investigation of the resonance and vibrational properties of naphthyl-terminated sp carbon chains (dinaphthylpolyynes) by combined multi-wavelength resonant Raman (MWRR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, plus ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that the MWWR and FT-IR spectroscopies are particularly suited to identify chains of different lengths and different terminations, respectively. By DFT calculations, we further extend those findings to sp carbon chains end-capped by oth…

We report on a new approach to ease the computational overhead of ab initio on-the-fly semiclassical dynamics simulations for vibrational spectroscopy. The well known bottleneck of such computations lies in the necessity to estimate the Hessian matrix for propagating the semiclassical pre-exponential factor at each step along the dynamics. The procedure proposed here is based on the creation of a dynamical database of Hessians and associated molecular geometries able to speed up calculations while preserving the accuracy of results at a satisfactory level. This new approach can be interfaced t…
A new nine-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) for methane has been generated using state-of-the-art \textit{ab initio} theory. The PES is based on explicitly correlated coupled cluster calculations with extrapolation to the complete basis set limit and incorporates a range of higher-level additive energy corrections. These include: core-valence electron correlation, higher-order coupled cluster terms beyond perturbative triples, scalar relativistic effects and the diagonal Born-Oppenheimer correction. Sub-wavenumber accuracy is achieved for the majority of experimentally known vibratio…
From ab initio simulations of liquid water, the time-dependent friction functions and time-averaged non-linear effective bond potentials for the OH stretch and HOH bend vibrations are extracted. The obtained friction exhibits adiabatic contributions at and below the vibrational time scales, but also much slower non-adiabatic contributions, reflecting homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening mechanisms, respectively. Compared to the gas phase, hydration softens both stretch and bend potentials, which by itself would lead to a red-shift of the corresponding vibrational bands. In contrast, n…
Recently, Mitsuhashi et al., have observed superconductivity with transition temperature up to 18 K in potassium doped picene (C22H14), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound [Nature 464 (2010) 76]. Theoretical analysis indicate the importance of electron-phonon coupling in the superconducting mechanisms of these systems, with different emphasis on inter- and intra-molecular vibrations, depending on the approximations used. Here we present a combined experimental and ab-initio study of the Raman and infrared spectrum of undoped solid picene, which allows us to unanbiguously assign the vibr…
The recent advent of chirped-pulse FTMW technology has created a plethora of pure rotational spectra for molecules for which no vibrational information is known. The growing number of such spectra demands a way to build empirical potential energy surfaces for molecules, without relying on any vibrational measurements. Using ZnO as an example, we demonstrate a powerful technique for efficiently accomplishing this. We first measure eight new ultra-high precision ($\pm2$ kHz) pure rotational transitions in the $X$-state of ZnO. Combining them with previous high-precision ($\pm50$ kHz) pure rotati…
We report ab initio calculations of the X $^2 Σ_{u}^+ $ and B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ states of the Be$_{2}^+$ dimer. Full valence configuration interaction calculations were performed using the aug-cc-pVnZ basis sets and the results were extrapolated to the CBS limit. Core-core, core-valence effects are included at the CCSDT/MTsmall level of theory. Two local minima, separated by a large barrier, are found in the expected repulsive B $^2 Σ_{g}^+$ state. Spectroscopic constants have been calculated and good agreement is found with the recent measurements of Merritt et al. Bound vibrational levels, transi…
We unravel the critical role of vibrational mode softening in single-molecule electronic devices at high bias. Our theoretical analysis is carried out with a minimal model for molecular junctions, with mode softening arising due to quadratic electron-vibration couplings, and by developing a mean-field approach. We discover that the negative sign of the quadratic electron-vibration coupling coefficient can realize at high voltage a sharp negative differential resistance (NDR) effect with a large peak-to-valley ratio. Calculated current-voltage characteristics, obtained based on ab initio parame…
It has recently been argued that atoms and molecules may become good targets of determining neutrino parameters still undetermined, if atomic/molecular process is enhanced by a new kind of coherence. We compute photon energy spectrum rate arising from coherent radiative neutrino pair emission processes of metastable excited states of I$_2$ and its iso-valent molecules, $|Av \rangle \rightarrow |Xv' \rangle + γ+ ν_iν_j$ and $|A'v \rangle \rightarrow |Xv' \rangle + γ+ ν_iν_j$ with $γ$ an IR photon and $ν_{i(j)}$ $i(j)-$th neutrino mass eigenstates, and show how fundamental neutrino parameters ma…
BeH is one of the most important benchmark systems for ab initio methods and for studying Born-Oppenheimer breakdown. However the best empirical potential and best ab initio potential for the ground electronic state to date give drastically different predictions in the long-range region beyond which measurements have been made, which is about \sim1000 cm^{-1} for ^{9} BeH, \sim3000 cm^{-1} for ^{9} BeD, and \sim13000 cm^{-1} for ^{9} BeT. Improved empirical potentials and Born-Oppenheimer breakdown corrections have now been built for the ground electronic states X(1^{2}Σ^{+}) of all three isot…
Finite-temperature, anharmonicity, and Duschinsky effects on the two-dimensional electronic spectra from ab initio thermo-field Gaussian wavepacket dynamics
The low-frequency range of vibrational spectra is sensitive to collective vibrations of the lattice. In molecular crystals, it can be decisive to identify the structure of different polymorphs, and in addition, it plays an important role on the magnitude of the temperature-dependent component of vibrational free energy differences between these crystals. In this work we study the vibrational Raman spectra and vibrational density of states of different polymorphs of the flexible Aspirin and Paracetamol crystals based on dispersion-corrected density-functional theory, density-functional perturba…
