We have applied path integral molecular dynamics simulations to investigate nuclear quantum effects on the vibrational dynamics of water molecules at the water-air interface. The instantaneous fluctuations in the frequencies of the O-H stretch modes are calculated using the wavelet method of time series analysis, while the time scales of vibrational spectral diffusion are determined from frequency-time correlation functions and joint probability distributions, as well as the hydrogen bond number correlation functions. We find that the inclusion of nuclear quantum effects leads not only to a redshift in the vibrational frequency distribution by about 120~cm$^{-1}$ for both the bulk and interfacial water molecules, but also to an acceleration of the vibrational dynamics on the water-air interface by as much as 60$\%$. In addition, a blueshift of about 30 ~cm$^{-1}$ is seen in the vibrational frequency distribution of interfacial water molecules compared to that of the bulk. Furthermore, the dynamics of water molecules beyond the topmost two molecular layers was found to be essentially similar to that of bulk water.
The structures of interfaces of nano- and microscale objects in aqueous solution are important for a wide variety of physical, chemical and biological processes. Vibrational sum frequency scattering has emerged as a useful and unique probe of the interfacial structure of nano- and microscale objects in water. However, the full surface vibrational stretch mode spectrum has not been measured yet, even though it would be extremely informative to do so. The reason for this is that probing the vibrational modes of interfacial water requires a full understanding of how the linear absorptive properti…
Vibrational coupling is relevant not only for dissipation of excess energy after chemical reactions but also for elucidating molecular structure and dynamics. It is particularly important for OH stretch vibrational spectra of water, for which it is known that in bulk both intra- and intermolecular coupling alter the intensity and line shape of the spectra. In contrast with bulk, the unified picture of the inter/intra-molecular coupling of OH groups at the water-air interface has been lacking. Here, combining sum-frequency generation experiments and simulation for isotopically diluted water and…

Interface-specific hydrogen- (H-)bonding network of water next to a substrate (including air) directly controls the energy transfer and chemical reaction pathway at many charged aqueous interfaces. Yet, experimental characterization of such bonded water layer structure is still a challenge due to the presence of the ion diffuse layer. We now develop a sum-frequency (SF) spectroscopic scheme with varying photon momentums as an all-optic solution for retrieving the vibrational spectra of the bonded water layer and the diffuse layer, and hence microscopic structural and charging information about…
We simulate vibrational strong (VSC) and ultrastrong coupling (V-USC) for liquid water with classical molecular dynamics simulations. When the cavity modes are resonantly coupled to the O-H stretch mode of liquid water, the infrared spectrum shows asymmetric Rabi splitting. The lower polariton (LP) may be suppressed or enhanced relative to the upper polariton (UP) depending on the frequency of the cavity mode. Moreover, although the static properties and the translational diffusion of water are not changed under VSC or V-USC, we do find the modification of the orientational autocorrelation fun…
Vibrational spectroscopy is key for probing the interplay between the structure and dynamics of aqueous systems. In order to map different regions of experimental spectra to the microscopic structure of a system, it is important to combine them with first-principles atomistic simulations that incorporate the quantum nature of nuclei. Here, we show that the large cost of calculating quantum vibrational spectra of aqueous systems can be dramatically reduced compared to standard path integral methods by using approximate quantum dynamics based on high-order path integrals. Together with state-of-…
Rates of conversions of molecular internal energy to and from kinetic energy by means of molecular collision allows to compute collisional line shapes and transport properties of gases. Knowledge of ro-vibrational quenching rates is necessary to connect spectral observations to physical properties of warm astrophysical gasses, including exo-atmospheres. For a system of paramount importance in this context, the vibrational bending mode quenching of H2O by H2, we show here that exchange of vibrational to rotational and kinetic energy remains a quantum process, despite the large numbers of quantu…
From ab initio simulations of liquid water, the time-dependent friction functions and time-averaged non-linear effective bond potentials for the OH stretch and HOH bend vibrations are extracted. The obtained friction exhibits adiabatic contributions at and below the vibrational time scales, but also much slower non-adiabatic contributions, reflecting homogeneous and inhomogeneous line broadening mechanisms, respectively. Compared to the gas phase, hydration softens both stretch and bend potentials, which by itself would lead to a red-shift of the corresponding vibrational bands. In contrast, n…
Molecular-level insight into interfacial water at buried electrode interfaces is essential in elucidating many phenomena of electrochemistry, but spectroscopic probing of the buried interfaces remains challenging. Here, using surface-specific vibrational spectroscopy, we probe and identify the interfacial water orientation and interfacial electric field at the calcium fluoride (CaF2)-supported electrified graphene/water interface under applied potentials. Our data shows that the water orientation changes drastically at negative potentials (<-0.03 V vs. Pd/H2), from O-H group pointing down towa…

The MB-pol many-body potential has recently emerged as an accurate molecular model for water simulations from the gas to the condensed phase. In this study, the accuracy of MB-pol is systematically assessed across the three phases of water through extensive comparisons with experimental data and high-level ab initio calculations. Individual many-body contributions to the interaction energies as well as vibrational spectra of water clusters calculated with MB-pol are in excellent agreement with reference data obtained at the coupled cluster level. Several structural, thermodynamic, and dynamica…
We explore by means of modeling how absorptive-dispersive mixing between the second- and third-order terms modify the imaginary chi(2)total responses from air/water interfaces under conditions of varying charge densities and ionic strength. To do so, we use published Im(chi(2)) and chi(3) spectra of the neat air/water interface that were obtained either from computations or experiments. We find that the chi(2)total spectral lineshapes corresponding to experimentally measured spectra contain significant contributions from both interfacial chi(2) and bulk chi(3) terms at interfacial charge densi…
We present a hybrid CCSD(T)+PBE-D3 approach to calculating the vibrational signatures for gas phase benzene and benzene adsorbed on an ordered water-ice surface. We compare the results of our method against experimentally recorded spectra and calculations performed using PBE-D3-only approaches (harmonic and anharmonic). Calculations use a proton ordered XIh water-ice surface consisting of 288 water molecules, and results are compared against experimental spectra recorded for an ASW ice surface. We show the importance of including a water ice surface into spectroscopic calculations, owing to th…
We use molecular dynamics simulations to study the thermodynamics and kinetics of alanine dipeptide isomerization at the air-water interface. Thermodynamically, we find an affinity of the dipeptide to the interface. This affinity arises from stablizing intramolecular interactions that become unshielded as the dipeptide is desolvated. Kinetically, we consider the rate of transitions between the alpha-L and beta conformations of alanine dipeptide and evaluate it as a continuous function of the distance from the interface using a recent extension of transition path sampling, TPS+U. The rate of is…
Machine learning has revolutionized the high-dimensional representations for molecular properties such as potential energy. However, there are scarce machine learning models targeting tensorial properties, which are rotationally covariant. Here, we propose tensorial neural network (NN) models to learn both tensorial response and transition properties, in which atomic coordinate vectors are multiplied with scalar NN outputs or their derivatives to preserve the rotationally covariant symmetry. This strategy keeps structural descriptors symmetry invariant so that the resulting tensorial NN models…
The Jones-Ray effect is an anomalous minimum in the surface tension of aqueous electrolytes at millimolar salt concentrations. We experimentally demonstrated that intentionally added ionic surfactants induce the Jones-Ray effect. The one-dimensional Poisson-Boltzmann theory, including the effect of surfactant adsorption and salt depletion, excellently agrees with the obtained experimental data. All the parameters of the ion-specific surface affinities used in the theory are consistent with previous experiments. These results strongly suggest that the Jones-Ray effect observed so far has been i…
Interstellar and cometary ices play an important role in the formation of planetary systems around young stars. Their main constituent is amorphous solid water (ASW). Although ASW is widely studied, vibrational energy dissipation and structural changes due to vibrational excitation are less well understood. The hydrogen-bonding network is likely a crucial component in this. Here we present experimental results on hydrogen-bonding changes in ASW induced by the intense, nearly monochromatic mid-IR free-electron laser (FEL) radiation of the FELIX-2 beamline at the HFML-FELIX facility at the Radbo…
The recent application of electrosprays to characterize the air-water interface, along with the reports on dramatically accelerated chemical reactions in aqueous electrosprays, have sparked a broad interest. Herein, we report on complementary laboratory and in silico experiments tracking the oligomerization of isoprene, an important biogenic gas, in electrosprays and isoprene-water emulsions to differentiate the contributions of interfacial effects from those of high voltages leading to charge-separation and concentration of reactants in the electrosprays. To this end, we employed electrospray…
Charged colloidal monolayers at the interface between water and air (or oil) are used in a large number of chemical, physical and biological applications. Although a considerable experimental and theoretical effort has been devoted in the past few decades to investigate such monolayers, some of their fundamental properties are not yet fully understood. In this paper, we model charged colloidal monolayers as a continuum layer of finite thickness, with separate charge distribution on the water and air sides. The electrostatic surface free-energy and surface pressure are calculated via the chargi…
A quantum simulation of vibrational strong coupling (VSC) in the collective regime via thermostatted ring-polymer molecular dynamics (TRPMD) is reported. For a collection of liquid-phase water molecules resonantly coupled to a single lossless cavity mode, the simulation shows that, as compared with a fully classical calculation, the inclusion of nuclear and photonic quantum effects does not lead to a change in the Rabi splitting but does broaden polaritonic linewidths roughly by a factor of two. Moreover, under thermal equilibrium, both quantum and classical simulations predict that the static…
Beyond the Electric Dipole Approximation: Electric and Magnetic Multipole Contributions Reveal Biaxial Water Structure from SFG Spectra at the Air-Water Interface
Most properties of liquid water are determined by its hydrogen-bond network. Because forming an aqueous interface requires termination of this network, one might expect the molecular level properties of interfacial water to markedly differ from water in bulk. Intriguingly, much prior experimental and theoretical work has found that, from the perspective of their time-averaged structure and picosecond structural dynamics, hydrogen-bonded OH groups at an air/water interface behave the same as hydrogen-bonded OH groups in bulk liquid water. Here we report the first experimental observation of int…
Molecular absorption of infrared radiation is generally due to ro-vibrational electric-dipole transitions. Electric-quadrupole transitions may still occur, but they are typically a million times weaker than electric-dipole transitions, rendering their observation extremely challenging. In polyatomic or polar diatomic molecules, ro-vibrational quadrupole transitions have never been observed. Here, we report the first direct detection of quadrupole transitions in water vapor. The detected quadrupole lines have intensity largely above the standard dipole intensity cut-off of spectroscopic databas…
The nanoscale structure of molecular assemblies plays a major role in many ($μ$)-biological mechanisms. Molecular crystals are one of the most simple of these assemblies and are widely used in a variety of applications from pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals, to nutraceuticals and cosmetics. The collective vibrations in such molecular crystals can be probed using terahertz spectroscopy, providing unique characteristic spectral fingerprints. However, the association of the spectral features to the crystal conformation, crystal phase and its environment is a difficult task. We present a combined …
Infrared absorption spectroscopy study of endohedral water molecule in a solid mixture of H$_2$O@C$_{60}$ and C$_{60}$ was carried out at liquid helium temperature. From the evolution of the spectra during the ortho-para conversion process, the spectral lines were identified as para- and ortho-water transitions. Eight vibrational transitions with rotational side peaks were observed in the mid-infrared: $ω_1$, $ω_2$, $ω_3$, $2ω_1$, $2ω_2$, $ω_1 +ω_3$, $ω_2 +ω_3$, and $2ω_2+ω_3$. The vibrational frequencies $ω_2$ and 2$ω_2$ are lower by 1.6\% and the rest by 2.4\%, as compared to free \water/. A…
We present an investigation of vibrational features in water clusters performed by means of our recently established divide-and-conquer semiclassical approach [M. Ceotto, G. Di Liberto, and R. Conte, Phys. Rev. Lett. 119, 010401 (2017)]. This technique allows us to simulate quantum vibrational spectra of high-dimensional systems starting from full-dimensional classical trajectories and projection of the semiclassical propagator onto a set of lower dimensional subspaces. The potential energy surface employed is a many-body representation up to three-body terms, in which monomers and two-body in…
The present study is devoted to the detailed numerical analysis of the combustion waves propagation through the lean hydrogen-air mixtures with suspended micro-droplets of water. Considered gaseous mixtures are characterized by a relatively low reactivity and so the intensity of the combustion waves is moderate. Herewith, it is found that the flame can be noticeably accelerated in the presence of suspended micro-droplets. In particular, it is shown that the interaction between the flame front and the droplets with a diameter larger than 25~$μ$m results in the enhancement of the flame instabili…
We report calculations of the surface tension of the water-air interface using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We investigate the simulation cell size dependence of the surface tension of water from force field molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which show that the calculated surface tension increases with increasing simulation cell size, thereby illustrating that a correction for finite size effects is required for the small system used in the AIMD simulation. The AIMD simulations reveal that the double-ξ basis set overestimates the experimentally measured surface tension d…
