We investigate optical parametric oscillations through four-wave mixing in resonant cavities and photonic crystals. The theoretical analysis underlines the relevant features of the phenomenon and the role of the density of states. Using fully vectorial 3D time-domain simulations, including both dispersion and nonlinear polarization, for the first time we address this process in a face centered cubic lattice and in a photonic crystal slab. The results lead the way to the development of novel parametric sources in isotropic media.
We demonstrate second harmonic generation at telecommunications wavelengths in L3 photonic crystal cavities in (111)-oriented GaAs. The second harmonic power from photonic crystal cavities fabricated in (111)-oriented GaAs is significantly increased compared to those fabricated in conventional (001)-oriented GaAs.
We demonstrate a simple and rapid epoxy-based method for transferring photonic crystal cavities to the facets of optical fibers. Passive Si cavities were measured via fiber taper coupling as well as direct transmission from the fiber facet. Active quantum dot containing GaAs cavities showed photoluminescence that was collected both in free space and back through the original fiber. Cavities maintain a high quality factor (2000-4000) in both material systems. This new design architecture provides a practical mechanically stable platform for the integration of photonic crystal cavities with macr…
We demonstrate high optical quality factors in aluminum nitride (AlN) photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. Suspended AlN photonic crystal nanobeams are fabricated in sputter-deposited AlN-on-insulator substrates using a self-protecting release process. Employing one-dimensional photonic crystal cavities coupled to integrated optical circuits we measure quality factors up to 146,000. By varying the waveguide-cavity coupling gap, extinction ratios in excess of 15 dB are obtained. Our results open the door for integrated photonic bandgap structures made from a low loss, wide-transparency, nonlinea…
We propose and analyze a new type of a resonant high-Q cavity for lasing, sensing or filtering applications, which is based on a surface states of a finite photonic crystal. We demonstrate that such the cavity can have a Q factor comparable with that one of conventional photonic band-gap defect mode cavities. At the same time, the distinguished feature of the surface mode cavity is that it is situated directly at the surface of the photonic crystal. This might open up new possibilities for design of novel photonic devices and integration of photonic circuits.
One dimensional nano-beam photonic crystal cavities fabricated in silicon dioxide are considered in both simulation and experiment. Quality factors of over 10^4 are found via simulation, while quality factors of over 5*10^3 are found in experiment, for cavities with mode volumes of 2.0 cubic wavelengths (in oxide) and in the visible wavelength range (600-716nm). The dependences of the cavity quality factor and mode volume for different design parameters are also considered.
We demonstrate fast (up to 20 GHz), low power (5 $μW$) modulation of photonic crystal (PC) cavities in GaAs containing InAs quantum dots. Rapid modulation through blue-shifting of the cavity resonance is achieved via free carrier injection by an above-band picosecond laser pulse. Slow tuning by several linewidths due to laser-induced heating is also demonstrated.
In this paper we study thermo-optical effects in gallium phosphite photonic crystal cavities in the visible. By measuring the shift of narrow resonances we derive the temperature dependency of the local refractive index of gallium phosphide in attoliter volumina over a temperature range between 5 K and 300 K at a wavelength of about 605 nm. Additionally, the potential of photonic crystal cavities for thermo-optical switching of visible light is investigated. As an example we demonstrate thermo-optical switching with 13 dB contrast.
We investigate the design, fabrication and experimental characterization of high Quality factor photonic crystal nanobeam cavities in silicon. Using a five-hole tapered 1D photonic crystal mirror and precise control of the cavity length, we designed cavities with theoretical Quality factors as high as 14 million. By detecting the cross-polarized resonantly scattered light from a normally incident laser beam, we measure a Quality factor of nearly 750,000. The effect of cavity size on mode frequency and Quality factor was simulated and then verified experimentally.
We experimentally demonstrate high Quality factor dual-polarized TE-TM photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. The free-standing nanobeams are fabricated in a 500 nm thick silicon layer, and are probed using both tapered optical fiber and free-space resonant scattering set-ups. We measure Q-factors greater than 10^4 for both TM and TE modes, and observe large fiber transmission drops (0.3 -- 0.4) at the TM mode resonances.
We present the integrated chip-scale tuning of multiple photonic crystal cavities. The optimized implementation allows effective and precise tuning of multiple cavity resonances (up to ~1.60 nm/mW) and inter-cavity phase (~ 0.038 pi/mW) by direct local temperature tuning on silicon nanomembranes. Through designing the serpentine metal electrodes and careful electron-beam alignment to avoid cavity mode overlap, the coupled photonic crystal L3 cavities preserve their high quality factors. The deterministic resonance and phase control enables switching between the all-optical analogue of electrom…
One dimensional nanobeam photonic crystal cavities are fabricated in silicon dioxide with silicon nanocrystals. Quality factors of over 9 x 10^3 are found in experiment, matching theoretical predictions, with mode volumes of 1.5(lambda/n)^3 . Photoluminescence from the cavity modes is observed in the visible wavelength range 600-820 nm. Studies of the lossy characteristics of the cavities are conducted at varying temperatures and pump powers. Free carrier absorption effects are found to be significant at pump powers as low as a few hundred nanowatts.
We present design guidelines for realizing side-coupled photonic crystal nanobeam (PCN) cavities with efficient coupling to low order resonances through adjusting the overlap of the PCN cavity mode and a feeding bus waveguide in both physical and k-space. We show that optimal side-coupled configurations function at a non-zero k-vector offset between the bus waveguide and PCN cavity modes. The straightforward design of side-coupled PCNs with high contrast resonances opens the door to their practical implementation in multiplexed, on-chip photonic devices.
We report the observation of optical bistability in Si-based photonic crystal cavities operating around 4.5 \mum. Time domain measurements indicate that the source of this optical bistability is thermal, with a time constant on the order of 5 \mus. Quality (Q) factor improvement is shown by the use of surface treatments (wet processes and annealing), resulting in an increase of Q-factor from 11,500 to 29,300 at 4.48 \mum. After annealing in a N2 environment, optical bistability is no longer seen in our cavities.
We demonstrate second harmonic generation in photonic crystal cavities in (001) and (111)B oriented GaAs. The fundamental resonance is at 1800 nm, leading to second harmonic below the GaAs bandgap. Below-bandgap operation minimizes absorption of the second harmonic and two photon absorption of the pump. Photonic crystal cavities were fabricated in both orientations at various in-plane rotations of the GaAs substrate. The rotation dependence and farfield patterns of the second harmonic match simulation. We observe similar maximum efficiencies of 1.2 %/W in (001) and (111)B oriented GaAs.
We demonstrate an add-drop filter based on a dual photonic crystal nanobeam cavity system that emulates the operation of a traveling-wave resonator and drops light on resonance to a single output port. Realized on an advanced SOI CMOS (IBM 45nm SOI) chip without any foundry process modifications, the device shows 16dB extinction in through port and 1dB loss in drop port with a 3dB bandwidth of 64GHz. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first implementation of a four-port add-drop filter based on photonic crystal nanobeam cavities.
In this article, we present a numerical study of the optical properties of a metal nanowire interacting with a localized cavity in a two dimensional photonic crystal. The nature of the modes, their wavelength and width are investigated as a function of the particle radius. It is shown in particular that a particle with diameter about the lattice constant presents very narrow resonances corresponding to hybrid photonic-plasmonic modes, where increased lifetime is attributed to the decrease of the radiative losses by interaction with the photonic crystal. These results open interesting applicati…
We report temporal and spectral domain observation of regenerative oscillation in monolithic silicon heterostructured photonic crystals cavities with high quality factor to mode volume ratios (Q/V). The results are interpreted by nonlinear coupled mode theory (CMT) tracking the dynamics of photon, free carrier population and temperature variations. We experimentally demonstrate effective tuning of the radio frequency (RF) tones by laser-cavity detuning and laser power levels, confirmed by the CMT simulations with sensitive input parameters.
Photonic crystal point-defect cavities were fabricated in a GaN free-standing photonic crystal slab. The cavities are based on the popular L3 design, which was optimized using an automated process based on a genetic algorithm, in order to maximize the quality factor. Optical characterization of several individual cavity replicas resulted in an average unloaded quality factor Q = 16,900 at the resonant wavelength λ $\sim 1.3$ μm, with a maximal measured Q value of 22,500. The statistics of both the quality factor and the resonant wavelength are well explained by first-principles simulations inc…
We demonstrate a new photo-induced oxidation technique for tuning GaAs photonic crystal cavities using a $390~\mathrm{nm}$ pulsed laser with an average power of $10~\mathrm{μW}$. The laser oxidizes a small $\left(\sim 500~\mathrm{nm}\right)$ diameter spot, reducing the local index of refraction and blueshifting the cavity. The tuning progress can be actively monitored in real time. We also demonstrate tuning an individual cavity within a pair of proximity-coupled cavities, showing that this method can be used to correct undesired frequency shifts caused by fabrication imperfections in cavity a…
We have demonstrated what we believe to be the first waveguide photonic crystal cavity operating in the mid-infrared. The devices were fabricated from Ge23Sb7S70 chalcogenide glass on CaF2 substrates by combing photolithographic patterning and focus ion beam milling. The waveguide-coupled cavities were characterized using a fiber end fire coupling method at 5.2 μm wavelength, and a loaded quality factor of ~ 2,000 was measured near the critical coupling regime.
We propose a novel method to generate vector beams in planar photonic crystal cavities with multiple missing-hole defects. Simulating the resonant modes in the cavities, we observe that the optical fields in each defect have different phase and polarization state distributions, which promise the compositions of vector beams by the scattered light from the defects. The far-field radiation patterns of the cavity modes calculated via the Sommerfeld diffraction theory present vector beams possessing hollow intensity profiles and polarization singularities. In addition, the extraction efficiencies …
Crystal-symmetry-protected photonic topological edge states (PTESs) based on air rods in conventional dielectric materials are designed as photonic topological waveguides (PTWs) coupled with side optical cavities. We demonstrate that the cavity coupled with the PTW can change the reflection-free transport of the PTESs, where the cavities with single mode and twofold degenerate modes are taken as examples. The single-mode cavities are able to perfectly reflect the PTESs at their resonant frequencies, forming a dip in the transmission spectra. The dip full width at half depth depends on the coup…
We present the design of mid-infrared and THz quantum cascade laser cavities formed from planar photonic crystals with a complete in-plane photonic bandgap. The design is based on a honeycomb lattice, and achieves a full in-plane photonic gap for transverse-magnetic polarized light while preserving a connected pattern for efficient electrical injection. Candidate defects modes for lasing are identified. This lattice is then used as a model system to demonstrate a novel effect: under certain conditions - that are typically satisfied in the THz range - a complete photonic gap can be obtained by …
Hybrid photonic-plasmonic cavities have emerged as a new platform to increase light-matter interaction capable to enhance the Purcell factor in a singular way not attainable with either photonic or plasmonic cavities separately. In the hybrid cavities proposed so far, mainly consisting of metallic bow-tie antennas, the plasmonic gap sizes defined by lithography in a repeatable way are limited to minimum values \approx 10 nm. Nanoparticle-on-a-mirror (NPoM) cavities are far superior to achieve the smallest possible mode volumes, as gaps smaller than 1 nm can be created. Here, we design a hybrid…
We present a method for tuning the resonant wavelength of photonic crystal cavities (PCCs) around 1.55 um. Large tuning of the PCC mode is enabled by electromechanically controlling the separation between two parallel InGaAsP membranes. A fabrication method to avoid sticking between the membranes is discussed. Reversible red/blue shifting of the symmetric/anti-symmetric modes has been observed, which provides clear evidence of the electromechanical tuning, and a maximum shift of 10 nm with < 6 V applied bias has been obtained.
One-dimensional nanobeam photonic crystal cavities are fabricated in an Er-doped amorphous silicon nitride layer. Photoluminescence from the cavities around 1.54 um is studied at cryogenic and room temperatures at different optical pump powers. The resonators demonstrate Purcell enhanced absorption and emission rates, also confirmed by time-resolved measurements. Resonances exhibit linewidth narrowing with pump power, signifying absorption bleaching and the onset of stimulated emission in the material at both 5.5 K and room temperature. We estimate from the cavity linewidths that Er has been p…
We present results for a photonic microwave resonator designed and fabricated at 17.4GHz with a record high Quality factor (Q = 26,400) at room temperature over a mode volume smaller than one cubic wavelength. The cavity is uniquely designed to have its electric field concentrated in air, which allows for efficient coupling to free space and facilitates interactions with gaseous atomic systems and fluids.
Optical fiber tapers are used to collect photoluminescence emission at ~1.5 um from photonic crystal cavities fabricated in erbium doped silicon nitride on silicon. Photoluminescence collection via fiber taper is enhanced 2.5 times relative to free space, with a total taper collection efficiency of 53%. By varying the fiber taper offset from the cavity, a broad tuning range of coupling strength is obtained. This material system combined with fiber taper collection is promising for building on-chip optical amplifiers.
We reveal a triangular-lattice planar photonic crystal supports Bloch modes with radially and azimuthally symmetric electric field distributions at the top band-edge of the first photonic band. Bifurcated from the corresponding Bloch modes, two cylindrical vector resonant modes are achieved by simply enlarging the central air-hole of the planar photonic crystal, which have high quality factors around 3,000 and small mode volume. The far-field radiations of the two resonant modes present high-quality cylindrical vector beam profiles. The resonant modes could be optimized by modifying the six ne…
We design a polarization-sensitive resonator for use in midinfrared photodetectors, utilizing a photonic crystal cavity and a single or double-metal plasmonic waveguide to achieve enhanced detector efficiency due to superior optical confinement within the active region. As the cavity is highly frequency and polarization-sensitive, this resonator structure could be used in chip-based infrared spectrometers and cameras that can distinguish among different materials and temperatures to a high degree of precision.
We describe the design, fabrication, and spectroscopy of coupled, high Quality (Q) factor silicon nanobeam photonic crystal cavities. We show that the single nanobeam cavity modes are coupled into even and odd superposition modes, and we simulate the frequency and Q factor as a function of nanobeam spacing, demonstrating that a differential wavelength shift of 70 nm between the two modes is possible while maintaining Q factors greater than 10^6. For both on-substrate and free-standing nanobeams, we experimentally monitor the response of the even mode as the gap is varied, and measure Q factors…

Small manufacturing-tolerant photonic crystal cavities are systematically designed using topology optimization to enhance the ratio between quality factor and mode volume, Q/V. For relaxed manufacturing tolerance, a cavity with bow-tie shape is obtained which confines light beyond the diffraction limit into a deep-subwavelength volume. Imposition of a small manufacturing tolerance still results in efficient designs, however, with diffraction-limited confinement. Inspired by numerical results, an elliptic ring grating cavity concept is extracted via geometric fitting. Numerical evaluations demo…
Spectroscopic methods are a sensitive way to determine the chemical composition of potentially hazardous materials. Here, we demonstrate that thermally-tuned high-Q photonic crystal cavities can be used as a compact high-resolution on-chip spectrometer. We have used such a chip-scale spectrometer to measure the absorption spectra of both acetylene and hydrogen cyanide in the 1550 nm spectral band, and show that we can discriminate between the two chemical species even though the two materials have spectral features in the same spectral region. Our results pave the way for the development of ch…
The realization of topological edge states (TESs) in photonic systems has provided unprecedented opportunities for manipulating light in novel manners. The Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) model has recently gained significant attention and has been exploited in a wide range of photonic platforms to create TESs. We develop a photonic topological insulator strategy based on SSH photonic crystal nanobeam cavities. In contrast to the conventional photonic SSH schemes which are based on alternately tuned coupling strength in one-dimensional lattice, our proposal provides higher flexibility and allows ta…
We describe the strong optomechanical dynamical interactions in ultrahigh-Q/V slot-type photonic crystal cavities. The dispersive coupling is based on a mode-gap photonic crystal cavities with light localization in an air mode with 0.02(lambda/n)3 modal volumes while preserving optical cavity Q up to 5 x 106. The mechanical mode is modeled to have fundamental resonance omega_m/2pi of 460 MHz and a quality factor Qm estimated at 12,000. For this slot-type optomechanical cavity, the dispersive coupling gom is numerically computed at up to 940 GHz/nm (Lom of 202 nm) for the fundamental optomechan…
Fast and highly accurate method based on the Muller contour integral equations and a trigonometric-trigonometric Galerkin discretization technique is presented for spectral design and fine-tuning of clusters of whispering-gallery (WG) mode microdisk resonators and photonic crystal (PC) defect cavities. It is shown that degeneracy and near-degeneracy of natural modes as well as modes optical confinement in coupled resonator clusters are significantly influenced by the symmetry of the structure. Photonic molecules with greatly enhanced quality factors are designed by exploiting the symmetry of t…
Multimode hollow microcavities in three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PhCs) are designed for achieving enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering, which requires a cavity to have three high quality-factor (Q) modes with equally spaced resonant frequencies. Cavities in 3D PhCs allows more flexibility in design and tuning than their 2D slab counterparts, since radiation loss that degrades Q can be suppressed by the 3D photonic band gap. We first tune all the mode frequencies simultaneously by changing the material and geometry of the cavity based on perturbation theory. Spectral spacin…
We report on nonlinear frequency conversion from the telecom range via second harmonic generation (SHG) and third harmonic generation (THG) in suspended gallium nitride slab photonic crystal (PhC) cavities on silicon, under continuous-wave resonant excitation. Optimized two-dimensional PhC cavities with augmented far-field coupling have been characterized with quality factors as high as 4.4$\times10^{4}$, approaching the computed theoretical values. The strong enhancement in light confinement has enabled efficient SHG, achieving normalized conversion efficiency of 2.4$\times10^{-3}$ $W^{-1}$, …
Wavelength-scale, high Q-factor photonic crystal cavities have emerged as a platform of choice for on-chip manipulation of optical signals, with applications ranging from low-power optical signal processing and cavity quantum electrodynamics, to biochemical sensing. Many of these applications, however, are limited by the fabrication tolerances and the inability to precisely control the resonant wavelength of fabricated structures. Various techniques for post-fabrication wavelength trimming and dynamical wavelength control -- using, for example, thermal effects, free carrier injection, low temp…
In this paper, by cascading several bichromatic photonic crystals we demonstrate that the quality factor can be much larger compared with that in an isolated cavity without increasing the total size of the device. We take lithium niobate photonic crystal as an example to illustrate that the simulated quality factor of the cascaded cavity can attain 10^5 with a 70° slant angle, which is an order of magnitude larger than that in isolated cavity. The device can be fabricated easily by current etching technique for lithium niobate. We have fabricated the proposed device experimentally including ho…
We present results on electrically driven nanobeam photonic crystal cavities formed out of a lateral p-i-n junction in gallium arsenide. Despite their small conducting dimensions, nanobeams have robust electrical properties with high current densities possible at low drive powers. Much like their two-dimensional counterparts, the nanobeam cavities exhibit bright electroluminescence at room temperature from embedded 1,250 nm InAs quantum dots. A small room temperature differential gain is observed in the cavities with minor beam self-heating suggesting that lasing is possible. These results ope…
We demonstrate temporal group delays in coherently-coupled high-Q multi-cavity photonic crystals, in an all-optical analogue to electromagnetically induced transparency. We report deterministic control of the group delay up to 4x the single cavity lifetime in our CMOS-fabricated room-temperature chip. Supported by three-dimensional numerical simulations and theoretical analyses, our multi-pump beam approach enables control of the multi-cavity resonances and inter-cavity phase, in both single and double transparency peaks. The standing-wave wavelength-scale photon localization allows direct sca…
Photonic crystal nanobeam cavities are versatile platforms of interest for optical communications, optomechanics, optofluidics, cavity QED, etc. In a previous work \cite{quan10}, we proposed a deterministic method to achieve ultrahigh \emph{Q} cavities. This follow-up work provides systematic analysis and verifications of the deterministic design recipe and further extends the discussion to air-mode cavities. We demonstrate designs of dielectric-mode and air-mode cavities with $Q>10^9$, as well as cavities with both high-\emph{Q} ($>10^7$) and high on-resonance transmissions ($T>95%$).
We fabricate and characterize a microscale silicon electro-opto-mechanical system whose mechanical motion is coupled capacitively to an electrical circuit and optically via radiation pressure to a photonic crystal cavity. To achieve large electromechanical interaction strength, we implement an inverse shadow mask fabrication scheme which obtains capacitor gaps as small as 30 nm while maintaining a silicon surface quality necessary for minimizing optical loss. Using the sensitive optical read-out of the photonic crystal cavity, we characterize the linear and nonlinear capacitive coupling to the…
We study the coupling between photonic molecules and waveguides in photonic crystal slab structures using finite-difference time-domain method and coupled mode theory. In a photonic molecule with two cavities, the coupling of cavity modes results in two super-modes with symmetric and anti-symmetric field distributions. When two super-modes are excited simultaneously, the energy of electric field oscillates between the two cavities. To excite and probe the energy oscillation, we integrate photonic molecule with two photonic crystal waveguides. In coupled structure, we find that the quality fact…

The fundamental mechanical mode shows a frequency of 65 MHz and a mechanical quality factor of 376. The optical spring effect, optical damping and amplification are observed with a large experimental optomechanical coupling rate gom/2pi of 154 GHz/nm, corresponding to a vacuum optomechanical couplin…
We present a novel differential refractive index sensor based on arrays of photonic molecules (PM) of dielectric cylinders and two structural defect cavities. The transmission spectrum of the photonic proposed structure as sensor shows a wide photonic stop band with two localized states. One of them, the reference state, is bound to a decagonal ring of cylinders and the other, the sensing state, to the defect cavities of the lattice. It is shown that defect mode is very sensitive to the presence of materials with dielectric permittivity different from that of the surrounding cylinders while th…
We present the design, fabrication and preliminary experiments of two-dimensional photonic crystal cavities made in nanoporous silicon luminescent at 700-800 nm. Enhancement in photoluminescence extraction efficiency at the resonant wavelength is expected due to Purcell effect and directed radiation pattern defined by the cavity. Such cavities should also enhance nonlinearities exhibited by porous Si beyond what is observed in one-dimensional distributed Bragg reflection cavities due to their small mode volumes and modest quality factors. This design aligns itself well to integration with conv…
Based upon projected local density of states (PLDOS) for photons, we develop a local coupling theory to simultaneously treat the weak and strong interaction between a quantum emitter and photons in arbitrary nanostructures. The PLDOS is mapped by an extremely flexible and efficient method. The recent experiment observation for the photonic crystal slabs is very well interpreted by our ab-initio PLDOS. More importantly, a bridge linking the PLDOS and cavity quantum electrodynamics is for the first time established to settle quality factor, g factor and vacuum Rabi splitting. Our work greatly en…

Effective cavities can be optically-induced in atomic media and employed to strengthen optical nonlinearities. Here we study the integration of induced cavities with a photonic quantum gate based on Rydberg blockade. Accounting for loss in the atomic medium, we calculate the corresponding finesse and gate infidelity. Our analysis shows that the conventional limits imposed by the blockade optical depth are mitigated by the induced cavity in long media, thus establishing the total optical depth of the medium as a complementary resource.
We demonstrate a method to locally change the refractive index in planar optical devices by photodarkening of a thin chalcogenide glass layer deposited on top of the device. The method is used to tune the resonance of GaAs-based photonic crystal cavities by up to 3 nm at 940 nm, with only 5% deterioration in cavity quality factor. The method has broad applications for postproduction tuning of photonic devices.
