Multimode hollow microcavities in three-dimensional (3D) photonic crystals (PhCs) are designed for achieving enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering, which requires a cavity to have three high quality-factor (Q) modes with equally spaced resonant frequencies. Cavities in 3D PhCs allows more flexibility in design and tuning than their 2D slab counterparts, since radiation loss that degrades Q can be suppressed by the 3D photonic band gap. We first tune all the mode frequencies simultaneously by changing the material and geometry of the cavity based on perturbation theory. Spectral spacings between the multiple modes are adjusted according to the symmetry, volume and field distribution of their mode profiles. The frequency and field distribution of the resonant modes are computed by solving Maxwell's equations in the frequency domain.
We demonstrate the design, fabrication and characterization of nanobeam cavities with multiple higher order modes. Designs with two high Q modes with frequency separations of an octave are introduced, and we fabricate such cavities exhibiting resonances with wavelength separations of up to 740 nm.
We experimentally study the competition between Kerr beam self-cleaning and Raman beam cleanup in a multimode air-silica microstructure optical fiber. Kerr beam self-cleaning of the pump is observed for a certain range of input powers only. Raman Stokes beam generation and cleanup lead to both depletion and degradation of beam quality for the pump. The interplay of modal four-wave mixing and Raman scattering in the infrared domain lead to the generation of a multimode supercontinuum ranging from 500 nm up to 1800 nm.
A formula for the laser linewidth of arbitrary cavities in the multimode non-linear regime is derived from a scattering analysis of the solutions to semiclassical laser theory. The theory generalizes previous treatments of the effects of gain and openness described by the Petermann factor. The linewidth is expressed using quantities based on the non-linear scattering matrix, which can be computed from steady-state ab initio laser theory; unlike previous treatments, no passive cavity or phenomenological parameters are involved. We find that low cavity quality factor, combined with significant d…
This letter is to pave the way towards the demonstration of spatiotemporal similariton pulses evolution in passive multimode fibers with Raman amplification. We present numerically these issues in a graded-index and step-index multimode fibers and provide a first look at the complex spatiotemporal dynamics of similariton pulses. The results showed that the similariton pulses can be generated in both multimode fibers. The temporal and the spectral evolution of the pulses can be characterized as parabolic shapes with linear chirp and kW peak power. By compressed these, high energy femtoseconds p…
We present a multimode laser-linewidth theory for arbitrary cavity structures and geometries that contains nearly all previously known effects and also finds new nonlinear and multimode corrections, e.g. a bad-cavity correction to the Henry $α$ factor and a multimode Schawlow--Townes relation (each linewidth is proportional to a sum of inverse powers of all lasing modes). Our theory produces a quantitatively accurate formula for the linewidth, with no free parameters, including the full spatial degrees of freedom of the system. Starting with the Maxwell--Bloch equations, we handle quantum and …
We report on the generation of a Raman cascade spanning the wavelength range of 523 to 1750 nm wavelength range, in a standard telecommunication graded-index multimode optical fiber. Despite the highly multimode nature of the pump, the Raman peaks are generated in specific modes of the fiber, confirming substantial beam cleanup during the stimulated Raman scattering process.
We demonstrate a new type of transition within the strong coupling regime, which alters the coupling mechanism in multimode cavities. We show that this transition drastically modifies the Hamiltonian describing the polaritons, such that different cavity modes are either entangled via the material or completely decoupled. This decoupling transition occurs due to the competition between the dissipation in the material and the finite group velocity, which governs the propagation of information across the cavity and among the molecules. The results indicate that the velocity of light, which is oft…
Presented here are studies of the impact of excitation angle on surface enhanced Raman and luminescence spectroscopy of dye immobilised on a plasmon active nanocavity array support. Results show that both Raman and luminescence intensities depend on the angle of incidence consistent with the presence of cavity supported plasmon modes. Dependence of scattering or emission intensity with excitation angle occurs over the window of observation.
We demonstrate a convenient and fast method to measure the spectrally resolved far-fields of multimode terahertz quantum cascade lasers by combining a microbolometer focal plane array with an FTIR spectrometer. Far-fields of fundamental TM0 and higher lateral order TM1 modes of multimode Fabry-Pérot type lasers have been distinguished, which very well fit to the results obtained by a 3D finite-element simulation. Furthermore, multimode random laser cavities have been investigated, analyzing the contribution of each single laser mode to the total far-field. The presented method is thus an impor…

We show that, in multimode Raman lasers, cascaded light scattering (CLS) not only extends the optical frequency range, but could also modulate the laser dynamics. The origin of this phenomenon is based on the fact that many Raman lasing modes are directly correlated through CLS. The coupled-mode equations only describe single-mode cascaded Raman lasers and are insufficient for describing the multimode case. In this work, we introduce additional terms to account for intermodal interaction and, thence, reveal the physical mechanism behind the mode-switching phenomenon. Additionally, mode-switchi…
We apply collective Raman scattering to create, store and retrieve spatially multimode light in warm rubidium-87 vapors. The light is created in a spontaneous Stokes scattering process. This is accompanied by the creation of counterpart collective excitations in the atomic ensemble -- the spin waves. After a certain storage time we coherently convert the spin waves into the light in deterministic anti-Stokes scattering. The whole process can be regarded as a delayed four-wave mixing which produces pairs of correlated, delayed random images. Storage of higher order spatial modes up to microseco…
Ultrashort high-energy pulses at wavelengths longer than 1 $μ$m are nowadays desired for a vast variety of applications in ultrafast and strong-field physics. To date, the main answer to the wavelength tunability for energetic, broadband pulses still relies on optical parametric amplification (OPA), which often requires multiple and complex stages, may feature imperfect beam quality and has limited conversion efficiency into one of the amplified waves. In this work, we present a completely different strategy to realize an energy-efficient and scalable laser frequency shifter. This relies on th…
Molecular vibrations and their dynamics are of outstanding importance for electronic and thermal transport in nanoscale devices as well as for molecular catalysis. The vibrational dynamics of <100 molecules are studied through three-colour time-resolved coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (trCARS) using plasmonic nanoantennas. This isolates molecular signals from four-wave mixing (FWM), while using exceptionally low nanowatt powers to avoid molecular damage via single-photon lock-in detection. FWM is found to be strongly suppressed in nm-wide plasmonic gaps compared to plasmonic nanopartic…
We analyze the properties of a Raman quantum light-atom interface in long atomic ensemble and its applications as a quantum memory or two-mode squeezed state generator. We consider the weak-coupling regime and include both Stokes and anti-Stokes scattering and the effects of Doppler broadening in buffer gas assuming frequent velocity-averaging collisions. We find the Green functions describing multimode transformation from input to output fields of photons and atomic excitations. Proper mode basis is found via singular value decomposition for short interaction times. It reveals that triples of…
Optomechanical crystal cavities (OMCCs) are fundamental nanostructures for a wide range of phenomena and applications. Usually, optomechanical interaction in such OMCCs is limited to a single optical mode and a unique mechanical mode. In this sense, eliminating the single mode constraint - for instance, by adding more mechanical modes - should enable more complex physical phenomena, giving rise to a context of multimode optomechanical interaction. However, a general method to produce in a controlled way multiple mechanical modes with large coupling rates in OMCCs is still missing. In this work…
We show that the light generated via spontaneous four-wave mixing or parametric down conversion in multiple, coupled, lossy cavities is a multimode squeezed thermal state. Requiring this state to be the solution of the Lindblad master equation results in a set of coupled first-order differential equations for the time-dependent squeezing parameters and thermal photon numbers of the state. The benefit of this semi-analytic approach is that the number of coupled equations scales linearly with the number of modes but is independent of the number of photons generated. With this analytic form of th…
Efficient coupling between on-chip sources and cavities plays a key role in silicon photonics. However, despite the importance of this basic functionality, there are few systematic design tools to simultaneously control coupling between multiple modes in a compact resonator and a single waveguide. Here, we propose a large-scale adjoint optimization approach to produce wavelength-scale waveguide--cavity couplers operating over tunable and broad frequency bands. We numerically demonstrate couplers discovered by this method that can achieve critical, or nearly critical, coupling between multi-rin…
We report on the development of a compact (volume $\approx$ 100\:cm$^3$), multimode diffraction-limited Raman spectrograph and probe designed to be compact as possible. The spectrograph uses `off the shelf' optics, a custom 3D-printed two-part housing and harnesses a multi-core fibre (MCF) photonic lantern (multimode to few-mode converter), which slices a large 40~\textmu m multimode input into a near-diffraction-limited 6~\textmu m aperture. Our unique design utilises the hexagonal geometry of our MCF, permitting high multimode collection efficiency with near-diffraction-limited performance i…
Multimode optical fibres are enjoying a renewed attention, boosted by the urgent need to overcome the current capacity crunch of single-mode fibre systems and by recent advances in multimode complex nonlinear optics [1-13]. In this work, we demonstrate that standard multimode fibres can be used as ultrafast all-optical tool for transverse beam manipulation of high power laser pulses. Our experimental data show that the Kerr effect in a graded-index multimode fibre is the driving mechanism for overcoming speckle distortions, leading to a somewhat counter-intuitive effect resulting in a spatiall…
We present fabrication and optical characterization of micro-cavities made of multilayer graphene (MLG) cantilevers clamped by metallic electrodes and suspended over Si/Si02 substrate. Graphene cantilevers act as a semi-transparent mirrors closing an air-wedge optical cavity. This simple geometry implements a standing-wave optical resonator along with a mechanical one. Equal thickness interference fringes are observed in both Raman and Rayleigh backscattered signals with interfringe given by their specific wavelength.Chromatic dispersion within the cavity makes possible spatial modulation of g…
We study a re-configurable nonreciprocal fiber ring cavity setup to generate tunable optical frequency combs. Coherent combs can be obtained by finely exploiting bi-chromatic Brillouin lasing and cascaded four-wave mixing in the nonlinear fiber cavity. We introduce a numerical model of the cavity system, which is validated by comparisons with experiments. Our work shows the importance of the mode pulling effect, controlled by the pump laser detuning, in setting the dynamics of the comb. This effect along with the impact of multimode lasing had been overlooked in previous fiber experiments. We …
We demonstrate that photonic lanterns based on tapered multicore fibres provide an efficient way to couple multimode states of light to a two-dimensional array of Single-Photon Avalanche Detectors (SPADs), each of which has its own Time-to-Digital Converter (TDC) for Time-Correlated Single-Photon-Counting (TCSPC). Exploiting this capability, we demonstrate multiplexed single-mode wavelength-to-time conversion of multimode states of light using a multicore-fibre photonic lantern with 121 single-mode cores, coupled in a one-to-one fashion to 121 SPADS on a 32 $\times$ 32 pixel CMOS SPAD array. Plasmon-enhanced Raman scattering can push single-molecule vibrational spectroscopy beyond a regime addressable by classical electrodynamics. We employ a quantum electrodynamics (QED) description of the coherent interaction of plasmons and molecular vibrations that reveal the emergence of nonlinearities in the inelastic response of the system. For realistic situations, we predict the onset of \textit{phonon-stimulated Raman scattering} and an counter-intuitive dependence of the anti-Stokes emission on the frequency of excitation. We further show that this novel QED framework opens a venue to a…
Strong light-matter interaction and high-efficiency optical collection of fluorescence from quantum emitters are crucial topics in quantum and nanophotonic fields. High-quality cavities, dispersive photonic crystal waveguides and even plasmonic structures have been used to enhance the interaction with quantum emitters, thus realize efficient collection of the fluorescence. In this work, a new method is proposed to collect the fluorescence of quantum dots (QDs) with a fiber-integrated multimode silver nanowire (AgNW) waveguide. Fluorescence lifetime measurement is performed to investigate the c…
Nonlinear optical wave propagation manifests in a multitude of frequencies generated from quantum-noise, and selecting desired nonlinear products usually requires seeding the medium with extraneous waves, employing spatial or spectral filters, or operation in resonant cavities. This is especially true for multimode systems because of their high density of states. Here we report the discovery of a self-action effect, originating from quantum noise, leading to complete nonlinear optical conversion of an ultrashort soliton pulse between two distinct, spatially coherent eigenmodes that are frequen…
Motivated by the increasing interest in the properties of multimode optomechanical devices, here we study a system in which a driven mode of a large-area optical cavity is despersively coupled to a deformable mechanical element. Two different models naturally appear in such scenario, for which we predict the formation of periodic patterns, localized structures (cavity solitons), and domain walls, among other complex nonlinear phenomena. Further, we propose a realistic design based on intracavity membranes where our models can be studied experimentally. Apart from its relevance to the field of …
We investigate the role of time delay in cold-damping optomechanics with multiple mechanical resonances. For instantaneous electronic response, it was recently shown in \textit{Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{123}, 203605 (2019)}, that a single feedback loop is sufficient to simultaneously remove thermal noise from many mechanical modes. While the intrinsic delayed response of the electronics can induce single mode and mutual heating between adjacent modes, we propose to counteract such detrimental effects by introducing an additional time delay to the feedback loop. For lossy cavities and broadband …
We demonstrate the dynamics of stimulated Raman scattering in designed high-Q/Vm silicon photonic band gap nanocavities through the coupled-mode theory framework towards optically-pumped silicon lasing. The interplay of other chi(3) effects such as two-photon absorption and optical Kerr, related free-carrier dynamics, thermal effects, as well as linear losses such as cavity radiation and linear material absorption are included and investigated numerically. Our results clarify the relative contributions and evolution of the mechanisms, and demonstrate the lasing and shutdown thresholds. Our stu…
We consider the propagation of temporally incoherent waves in multimode optical fibers (MMFs) in the framework of the multimode nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equation accounting for the impact of the natural structural disorder that affects light propagation in standard MMFs (random mode coupling and polarization fluctuations). By averaging the dynamics over the fast disordered fluctuations, we derive a Manakov equation from the multimode NLS equation, which reveals that the Raman effect introduces a previously unrecognized nonlinear coupling among the modes. Applying the wave turbulence theory …
Raman lasers based on integrated silica whispering gallery mode resonant cavities have enabled numerous applications from telecommunications to biodetection. To overcome the intrinsically low Raman gain value of silica, these devices leverage their ultra-high quality factors (Q), allowing sub-mW stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) lasing thresholds to be achieved. A closely related nonlinear behavior to SRS is stimulated anti-Stokes Raman scattering (SARS). This nonlinear optical process combines the pump photon with the SRS photon to generate an upconverted photon. Therefore, in order to achiev…
We propose a new type of waveguide optical amplifier. The device consists of collinearly propagating pump and amplified Stokes beams with periodic imaging of the Stokes beam due to the Talbot effect. The application of this device as an Image preamplifier for Mid Wave Infrared (MWIR) remote sensing is discussed and its performance is described. Silicon is the preferred material for this application in MWIR due to its excellent transmission properties, high thermal conductivity, high damage threshold and the mature fabrication technology. In these devices, the Raman amplification process also i…
We review recent statistical mechanical approaches to multimode laser theory. The theory has proved very effective to describe standard lasers. We refer of the mean field theory for passive mode locking and developments based on Monte Carlo simulations and cavity method to study the role of the frequency matching condition. The status for a complete theory of multimode lasing in open and disordered cavities is discussed and the derivation of the general statistical models in this framework is presented. When light is propagating in a disordered medium, the system can be analyzed via the replic…
A laser is based on the electromagnetic modes of its resonator, which provides the feedback required for oscillation. Enormous progress has been made in controlling the interactions of longitudinal modes in lasers with a single transverse mode. For example, the field of ultrafast science has been built on lasers that lock many longitudinal modes together to form ultrashort light pulses. However, coherent superposition of many longitudinal and transverse modes in a laser has received little attention. The multitude of disparate frequency spacings, strong dispersions, and complex nonlinear inter…
The scaling of electromagnetic apertures is a long-standing question that has been investigated for at least six decades but has still not been resolved [1-5]. The size of single aperture cavities, bounded by the existence of higher-order transverse modes, fundamentally limits the power emitted by single-mode lasers or the brightness of quantum light sources. The free-spectral range of existing electromagnetic apertures goes to zero when the size of the aperture increases, and the demonstration of scale-invariant apertures or lasers has remained elusive. Here, we report open-Dirac electromagne…
In fiber based Fabry-Pérot Cavities (FFPCs), limited spatial mode matching between the cavity mode and input/output modes has been the main hindrance for many applications. We have demonstrated a versatile mode matching method for FFPCs. Our novel design employs an assembly of a graded-index and large core multimode fiber directly spliced to a single mode fiber. This all-fiber assembly transforms the propagating mode of the single mode fiber to match with the mode of a FFPC. As a result, we have measured a mode matching of 90\% for a cavity length of $\sim$400 $μm$. This is a significant impro…
The way molecules absorb, transfer, and emit light can be dramatically modified by coupling them to optical cavities. The extent of the modification is often defined by the cavity-molecule coupling strength. Evaluating this coupling strength for different types of modes supported by a cavity is crucial in designing cavities for molecule-cavity coupling. Here we probe a unique multimode cavity, a dielectric microsphere, also called a soft-cavity, which supports two distinct types of mode, dark-field scattering (DFS) modes and whispering gallery modes (WGM). Though seemingly similar, these modes…
Resonant structures in modern nanophotonics are non-Hermitian (leaky and lossy), and support quasinormal modes. Moreover, contemporary cavities frequently include 2D materials to exploit and resonantly enhance their nonlinear properties or provide tunability. Such materials add further modeling complexity due to their infinitesimally thin nature and strong dispersion. Here, a formalism for efficiently analyzing third harmonic generation (THG) in nanoparticles and metasurfaces incorporating 2D materials is proposed. It is based on numerically calculating the quasinormal modes in the nanostructu…
Warm atomic vapor quantum memories are simple and robust, yet suffer from a number of parasitic processes which produce excess noise. For operating in a single-photon regime precise filtering of the output light is essential. Here we report a combination of magnetically tuned absorption and Faraday filters, both light-direction-insensitive, which stop the driving lasers and attenuate spurious fluorescence and four-wave mixing while transmitting narrowband Stokes and anti-Stokes photons generated in write-in and readout processes. We characterize both filters with respect to adjustable working …
