We show that, in multimode Raman lasers, cascaded light scattering (CLS) not only extends the optical frequency range, but could also modulate the laser dynamics. The origin of this phenomenon is based on the fact that many Raman lasing modes are directly correlated through CLS. The coupled-mode equations only describe single-mode cascaded Raman lasers and are insufficient for describing the multimode case. In this work, we introduce additional terms to account for intermodal interaction and, thence, reveal the physical mechanism behind the mode-switching phenomenon. Additionally, mode-switching controlled solely by a single-mode pump in whispering gallery mode (WGM) silica Raman lasers is demonstrated. As the intracavity pump power is increased, laser switching happens between two adjacent WGMs in the same mode family.
We demonstrate a new high efficiency architecture for cascaded Raman fiber lasers based on a single pass cascaded amplifier configuration. Conversion is seeded at all intermediate Stokes wavelengths using a multi-wavelength seed source. A lower power Raman laser based on the conventional cascaded Raman resonator architecture provides a convenient seed source providing all the necessary wavelengths simultaneously. In this work we demonstrate a 1480nm laser pumped by an 1117nm Yb-doped fiber laser with maximum output power of 204W and conversion efficiency of 65% (quantum-limited efficiency is ~…
Cascaded Raman fiber lasers have offered a convenient method to obtain scalable, high-power sources at various wavelength regions inaccessible with rare-earth doped fiber lasers. A limitation previously was the reduced efficiency of these lasers. Recently, new architectures have been proposed to enhance efficiency, but this came at the cost of enhanced complexity, requiring an additional low-power, cascaded Raman laser. In this work, we overcome this with a new, all-passive architecture for high-efficiency cascaded Raman conversion. We demonstrate our architecture with a fifth-order cascaded R…
We report experimental demonstration of continuous-wave cascaded-harmonic generation and Raman lasing in a millimeter-scale lithium niobate whispering-gallery resonator pumped at a telecommunication-compatible infrared wavelength. Intensity enhancement through multiple recirculations in the whispering-gallery resonator and quasi phase-matching through a nonuniform crystal poling enable simultaneous cascaded-harmonic generation up to the fourth-harmonic accompanied by stimulated Raman, two-photon, three-photon, and four-photon Raman scattering corresponding the molecular vibrational wavenumbers…
Cascaded Raman lasers enable high powers at various wavelength bands inaccessible with conventional rare-earth doped lasers. The input and output wavelengths of conventional implementations are fixed by the constituent fiber gratings necessary for cascaded Raman conversion. We demonstrate here, a simple architecture for high power, fixed and wavelength tunable, grating-free, cascaded Raman conversion between different wavelength bands. The architecture is based on the recently proposed distributed feedback Raman lasers. Here, we implement a module which converts the Ytterbium band to the eye-s…
We introduce a new regime of cascaded quadratic nonlinearities which result in a continuous red shift of the optical pump, analogous to a Raman shifting process rather than self-phase modulation. This is particularly relevant to terahertz generation, where a continuous red shift of the pump can resolve current issues such as dispersion management and laser-induced damage. We show that in the absence of absorption or dispersion, the presented Raman shifting method will result in optical-to-terahertz energy conversion efficiencies that approach $100\%$ which is not possible with conventional cas…
High power fiber lasers operating at the 1.5micron wavelength region have attractive features like eye-safety and atmospheric transparency, and cascaded Raman fiber lasers offer a convenient method to obtain high power sources at these wavelengths. A limitation to power scaling however has been the lower conversion efficiency of these lasers. We recently introduced a high efficiency architecture for high power cascaded Raman fiber lasers applicable for 1.5micron fiber lasers. Here we demonstrate further power scaling using this new architecture. Using numerical simulations we identify the idea…
We show that useful non-instantaneous nonlinear phase shifts can be obtained from cascaded quadratic processes in the presence of group velocity mismatch. The two-field nature of the process permits responses that can be effectively advanced or retarded in time with respect to one of the fields. There is an analogy to a generalized Raman-scattering effect, permitting both red and blue shifts of short pulses. We expect this capability to have many applications in short-pulse generation and propagation, such as the compensation of Raman-induced effects and high-quality pulse compression, which w…
Due to their high circulating intensities, ultra-high quality factor dielectric whispering-gallery mode resonators have enabled the development of low threshold Raman microlasers. Subsequently, other Raman-related phenomena, such as cascaded stimulated Raman scattering (CSRS) and stimulated anti-Stokes Raman scattering (SARS), were observed. While low threshold frequency conversion and generation have clear applications, CSRS and SARS have been limited by the low Raman gain. In this work, the surface of a silica resonator is modified with an organic monolayer, increasing the Raman gain. Up to …
We demonstrate a high power, all-fiber, tunable laser source that can operate in the L-band region. A low power, tunable input laser is amplified with a recently proposed, high efficiency, 6th order cascaded Raman amplifier. The proposed system is scalable and overcomes the limitations of Erbium and Erbium-Ytterbium co-doped fiber lasers for power scaling. A tunable Erbium-Ytterbium co-doped fiber ring laser generating ~0.5W of power and tunable in the 1560-1590 nm wavelength range is utilized as the seed source. The output from the seed laser is amplified to ~24 W using 6th order cascaded Ram…
A novel method for efficient generation of high power, equalized continuous-wave supercontinuum source in an all conventional silica fiber architecture is demonstrated. Highly nonlinear fiber (HNLF) is pumped in its anomalous dispersion region using a novel, high power, L-band laser. The L-band laser encompasses a 6th order cascaded Raman amplifier which is pumped with a high power Ytterbium doped fiber laser and amplifies a low-power, tunable L-band seed source. The supercontinuum generated 35W of power with ~40% efficiency. The Supercontinuum spectrum was measured to have a high degree of fl…
The realization of ultrahigh quality (Q) resonators regardless of the underpinning material platforms has been a ceaseless pursuit, because the high Q resonators provide an extreme environment of storage of light to enable observations of many unconventional nonlinear optical phenomenon with high efficiencies. Here, we demonstrate an ultra-high Q factor (7.1*10^6) microresonator on the 4H-silicon-carbide-on-insulator (4H-SiCOI) platform in which both \c{hi}^(2) and \c{hi}^(3) nonlinear processes of high efficiencies have been generated. Broadband frequency conversions, including second-, third…
Using an example of a Raman active medium we describe how a common nonlinear process of four-wave mixing can be used to induce strong coupling between the spatial and temporal degrees of freedom in optical waves. This coupling produces several unexpected effects. Amongst those are cascaded excitation of multiply charged optical vortices, spatial focusing in a nonlinearly defocusing medium and generation of helically shaped spatio-temporal optical solitons.
Stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) in ultra-high-Q surface-tension-induced spherical and chip-based toroid microcavities is considered both theoretically and experimentally. These microcavities are fabricated from silica, exhibit small mode volume (typically 1000 $μm^{3}$) and possess whispering-gallery type modes with long photon storage times (in the range of 100 ns), significantly reducing the threshold for stimulated nonlinear optical phenomena. Oscillation threshold levels of less than 100 $μ$% -Watts of launched fiber pump power, in microcavities with quality factors of 100 million are ob…
We formulate a generic concept of engineering optical modes and mechanical resonances in a pair of optically-coupled light-guiding membranes for achieving cascaded light scattering to multiple Stokes and anti-Stokes orders. By utilizing the light pressure exerted on the webs and their induced flexural vibrations, featuring flat phonon dispersion curve with a non-zero cut-off frequency, we show how to realize exact phase-matching between multiple successive optical side-bands. We predict continuous-wave generation of frequency combs for fundamental and high-order optical modes mediated via back…
We report generation of cascaded rotational Raman scattering up to 58th orders in coherently excited CO_2 molecules. The high-order Raman scattering, which produces a quasiperiodic frequency comb with more than 600 sidebands, is obtained using an intense femtosecond laser to impulsively excite rotational coherence and the femtosecond-laser-induced N_2^+ lasing to generate cascaded Raman signals. The novel configuration allows this experiment to be performed with a single femtosecond laser beam at free-space standoff locations. It is revealed that the efficient spectral extension of Raman signa…
We report on the fabrication of an ultrahigh quality factor, bottle-like microresonator from a microcapillary, and the realization of Raman lasing therein at pump wavelengths of $1.55~\mathrm{μm}$ and $780~\mathrm{nm}$. The dependence of the Raman laser threshold on mode volume is investigated. The mode volume of the fundamental bottle mode is calculated and compared with that of a microsphere. Third-order cascaded Raman lasing was observed when pumped at $780~\mathrm{nm}$. In principle, Raman lasing in a hollow bottle-like microresonator can be used in sensing applications. As an example, we …
In this work, we present a high pulse energy multi-wavelength Raman laser spanning from 1.53 um up to 2.4 um by employing the cascaded rotational stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) effect in a 5-m hydrogen (H2) -filled nested anti-resonant fiber (NARF), pumped by a linearly polarized Er/Yb fiber laser with a peak power of ~13 kW and pulse duration of ~7 ns in the C-band. The developed Raman laser has distinct lines at 1683 nm, 1868 nm, 2100 nm, and 2400 nm, with pulse energies as high as 18.25 uJ, 14.4 uJ, 14.1 uJ, and 8.2 uJ, respectively. We demonstrate how the energy in the Raman lines can b…
High quality lithium niobate thin film microresonators provide an ideal platform for on-chip nonlinear optics applications. However, the phase matching condition for efficient parametric process sets a high requirement for fabrication control. Here we demonstrate a photonic molecular structure composed of two strongly coupled lithium niobate microdisks of different diameters fabricated using femtosecond laser micromachining and focused ion beam milling. With a continuous wave excitation, rich nonlinear optical processes including cascaded four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman scattering were o…
Silicon nitride (Si$_3$N$_4$) is an ever-maturing integrated platform for nonlinear optics. Yet, due to the absence of second-order ($χ^{(2)}$) nonlinearity, Si$_3$N$_4$ is mostly considered for third-order ($χ^{(3)}$) nonlinear interactions. Recently, this limitation was overcome by optical poling in both Si$_3$N$_4$ waveguides and microresonators via the photogalvanic effect, resulting in the inscription of quasi-phase-matched $χ^{(2)}$ gratings. Here, we report cascaded nonlinear effects in a normal dispersion Si$_3$N$_4$ microresonator with combined $χ^{(2)}$ and $χ^{(3)}$ nonlinearities. …
Inelastic scattering processes such as Brillouin scattering can often function in cascaded regimes and this is likely to occur in certain integrated opto-acoustic devices. We develop a Hamiltonian formalism for cascaded Brillouin scattering valid for both quantum and classical regimes. By regarding Brillouin scattering as the interaction of a single acoustic envelope and a single optical envelope that covers all Stokes and anti-Stokes orders, we obtain a compact model that is well suited for numerical implementation, extension to include other optical nonlinearities or short pulses, and applic…
The output pulses of a commercial high-power femtosecond fiber laser or amplifier are typically around 300-500 fs with a wavelength around 1030 nm and 10s of $μ$J pulse energy. Here we present a numerical study of cascaded quadratic soliton compression of such pulses in LiNbO$_3$ using a type I phase matching configuration. We find that because of competing cubic material nonlinearities compression can only occur in the nonstationary regime, where group-velocity mismatch induced Raman-like nonlocal effects prevent compression to below 100 fs. However, the strong group velocity dispersion impli…

We propose a scheme to realize the storage and retrieval of light pulses in a fast-light medium via a mechanism of active Raman gain (ARG). The system under consideration is a four-level atomic gas interacting with three (pump, signal and control) laser fields. We show that a stable propagation of signal light pulses with superluminal velocity (i.e. fast-light pulses) is possible in such system through the ARG contributed by the pump field and the quantum interference effect induced by the control field. We further show that a robust storage and retrieval of light pulses in such fast-light med…
We theoretically demonstrate control of the plasma-like effective response of a metamaterial composed of aligned metallic nanorods when the electric field of the incident radiation is parallel to the nanorods. By embedding this metamaterial in a coherent atomic/molecular medium, for example silver nanorod arrays submerged in sodium vapor, we can make the metamaterial transmittive in the forbidden frequency region below its plasma frequency. This phenomenon is enabled by having Lorentz absorbers or other coherent processes like stimulated Raman absorption in the background medium which provide …
We propose a scheme for attaining slow and fast light via coherent control of the hyperfine ground and excited states of an ultracold atomic system. The proposed scheme is theoretically analyzed for the $D_1$ transition of ultracold $^{23}$ Na atoms. The role of field detuning and field intensity on both the population transfer and induced polarization is investigated. It is shown that slow and fast light, with large bandwidth could be obtained in the proposed system. It is inferred that both slow and fast light could co-propagate, pertaining to different optical and Raman transitions. Further…
Dissipative Kerr solitons (DKSs) have been generated via injection locking of chipscale microresonators to continuous-wave (CW) III-V lasers. This advance has enabled fully integrated hybrid microcomb systems that operate in turnkey mode and can access microwave repetition rates. Yet, CW-driven DKS exhibits low energy conversion efficiency and high optical power threshold, especially when the repetition rate is within the microwave range that is convenient for direct detection with off-the-shelf electronics. Efficient DKS can be generated by spatiotemporally structured light (i.e., pulsed pump…
The combinations of artificial intelligence and lasers provide powerful ways to form smart light sources with ground-breaking functions. Here, a Raman fiber laser (RFL) with reconfigurable and programmable spectra in an ultra-wide bandwidth is developed based on spectral-spatial manipulation of light in multimode fiber (MMF). The proposed fiber laser uses nonlinear gain from cascaded stimulated Raman scattering, random distributed feedback from Rayleigh scattering, and point feedback from an MMF-based smart spectral filter. Through wavefront shaping controlled by a genetic algorithm, light of …

We report on the direct measurement of the electron spin splitting and the accompanying nuclear Overhauser (OH) field, and thus the underlying nuclear spin polarization (NSP) and fluctuation bandwidth, in a single InAs quantum dot under resonant excitation conditions with unprecedented spectral resolution. The electron spin splitting is measured directly via resonant spin-flip single photon Raman scattering detected by superconducting nanowires to generate excitation-emission energy maps. The observed two-dimensional maps reveal an OH field that has a non-linear dependence on excitation freque…
The ultrafast switching of magnetization in multiferroic materials by a femtosecond laser could provide various advantages in photonics and magnonics. An efficient approach to control the light matter interaction is the modulation of ultrafast coherent magnons and phonons in the high frequency range. Spontaneous Raman and infrared spectra reveal the excitation of magnons and optical phonons in multiferroic BiFeO3 in the sub few terahertz range. However, coherent control of such quasiparticles has not been achieved yet. In this study, we demonstrate that linearly polarized laser pulses simultan…
