We use ab initio molecular dynamics as a basis for quasi-chemical theory evaluation of the free energy of water near conventional liquid thermodynamic states. The PW91, PBE, and revised PBE (rPBE) functionals are employed. The oxygen radial density distribution, gOO(r), using the rPBE functional is in reasonable agreement with current experiments, whereas the PW91 and PBE functionals predict a more structured gOO(r). The diffusion coefficient with the rPBE functional is in reasonable accord with experiments. Using a maximum entropy procedure, we obtain x_0 from the coordination number distribution x_n for oxygen atoms having n neighbors. Likewise, we obtain p_0 from p_n, the probability of observing cavities of specified radius containing n water molecules. The probability x_0 is a measure of the local chemical interactions and is central to the quasi-chemical theory of solutions. The probability p_0, central to the theory of liquids, is a measure of the free energy required to open cavities of defined sizes in the solvent. Using these values and a reasonable model for electrostatic and dispersion effects, the hydration free energy of water in water at 314K is calculated to be -5.1kcal/mole with the rPBE functional, in encouraging agreement with the experimental value of -6.1kcal/mole.
The high-energy tail of the distribution of solute-solvent interaction energies is poorly characterized for condensed systems, but this tail region is of principal interest in determining the excess free energy of the solute. We introduce external fields centered on the solute to modulate the short-range repulsive interaction between the solute and solvent. This regularizes the binding energy distribution and makes it easy to calculate the free energy of the solute with the field. Together with the work done to apply the field in the presence and absence of the solute, we calculate the excess …
The application of newly developed first-principle modeling techniques to liquid water deepens our understanding of the microscopic origins of its unusual macroscopic properties and behaviour. Here, we review two novel ab initio computational methods: second-generation Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics and decomposition analysis based on absolutely localized molecular orbitals. We show that these two methods in combination not only enable ab initio molecular dynamics simulations on previously inaccessible time and length scales, but also provide unprecedented insights into the nature of hydrog…
In order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of both thermodynamics and kinetics of water dissociation on TiO2, the reactions between liquid water and perfect and defective rutile TiO2 (110) surfaces were investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the free-energy barrier (~ 4.4 kcal/mol) is too high for a spontaneous dissociation of water on the perfect rutile (110) surface at a low temperature. The most stable oxygen vacancy (Vo1) on the rutile (110) surface cannot promote the dissociation of water, while other unstable oxygen vacancies can signif…
We discuss how to include our recently proposed thermopotentiostat technique [Phys. Rev. Lett. 126, 136803 (2021)] into any existing ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) package. Using thermopotentiostat AIMD simulations in the canonical NVTΦ ensemble at constant electrode potential, we compute the polarization bound charge and dielectric response of interfacial water from first principles.
Accurate prediction of the water properties from a low-cost ab-initio method still a foremost problem for chemists and physicist. Though density functional approaches starting from semilocal to hybrid functionals are tested, those are not efficiently performed for all the properties together, especially, considering energies, conformal ranking, structural and dynamics of water. Also, the inclusion of the long-range van der Waals (vdW) interaction does not improve the ordering stability of isomer. However, relying on the simple revision of the Tao-Mo (revTM) semilocal meta-generalized gradient …
A molecular theory of liquid water is identified and studied on the basis of computer simulation of the TIP3P model of liquid water. This theory would be exact for models of liquid water in which the intermolecular interactions vanish outside a finite spatial range, and therefore provides a precise analysis tool for investigating the effects of longer-ranged intermolecular interactions. We show how local order can be introduced through quasi-chemical theory. Long-ranged interactions are characterized generally by a conditional distribution of binding energies, and this formulation is interpret…
We regularize the potential distribution framework to calculate the excess free energy of liquid water simulated with the BLYP-D density functional. The calculated free energy is in fair agreement with experiments but the excess internal energy and hence also the excess entropy are not. Our work emphasizes the importance of thermodynamic characterization in assessing the quality of electron density functionals in describing liquid water and hydration phenomena.
In the free energy of hydration of a solute, the chemical contribution is given by the free energy required to expel water molecules from the coordination sphere and the packing contribution is given by the free energy required to create the solute-free coordination sphere (the observation volume) in bulk water. With the SPC/E water model as a reference, we examine the chemical and packing contributions in the free energy of water simulated using different electron density functionals. The density is fixed at a value corresponding to that for SPC/E water at a pressure of 1 bar. The chemical co…
Water is of the utmost importance for life and technology. However, a genuinely predictive ab initio model of water has eluded scientists. We demonstrate that a fully ab initio approach, relying on the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) density functional, provides such a description of water. SCAN accurately describes the balance among covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals interactions that dictates the structure and dynamics of liquid water. Notably, SCAN captures the density difference between water and ice I{\it h} at ambient conditions, as well as many import…
For the first time, an ab initio molecular dynamics simulation was performed to describe the C$_3$S/water interface. The simulation shows that oxides with favorable environment are protonated at first, creating very stable hydroxide groups. Proton transfers occur between water and silicates, and between water and hydroxides formed upon water dissociation on the surface. The typical lifetime of these events is on the same timescale than interconversion between Eigen and Zundel ions in bulk water. At the very early stage of the hydration encompassed by our simulation, silanol groups are very uns…
We have applied path integral simulations, in combination with new ab initio based water potentials, to investigate nuclear quantum effects in liquid water. Because direct ab initio path integral simulations are computationally expensive, a flexible water model is parameterized by force-matching to density functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulations. The resulting effective potentials provide an inexpensive replacement for direct ab inito molecular dynamics simulations and allow efficient simulation of nuclear quantum effects. Static and dynamic properties of liquid water at ambient…
Theoretical cross sections for the pressure broadening by hydrogen of rotational transitions of water are compared to the latest available measurements in the temperature range 65-220 K. A high accuracy interaction potential is employed in a full close coupling calculation. A good agreement with experiment is observed above ~80 K while the sharp drop observed experimentally at lower temperatures is not predicted by our calculations. Possible explanations for this discrepancy include the failure of the impact approximation and the possible role of ortho-to-para conversion of H2.
Efficient "on-the-fly" calculation of Raman spectra from \textit{ab-initio} molecular dynamics: Application to hydrophobic/hydrophilic solutes in bulk water
The structure and dynamics of the water/vapor interface is revisited by means of path-integral and second-generation Car-Parrinello ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations in conjunction with an instantaneous surface definition [A. P. Willard and D. Chandler, J. Phys. Chem. B 114, 1954 (2010)]. In agreement with previous studies, we find that one of the OH bonds of the water molecules in the topmost layer is pointing out of the water into the vapor phase, while the orientation of the underlying layer is reversed. Therebetween, an additional water layer is detected, where the molecules are ali…
Experiment Directed Simulations (EDS) is a method within a class of techniques seeking to improve molecular simulations by minimally biasing the system Hamiltonian to reproduce certain experimental observables. In a previous application of EDS to ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation-based on electronic density functional theory (DFT), the AIMD simulations of water were biased to reproduce its experimentally derived solvation structure. In particular, by solely biasing the O-O pair correlation functions, other structural and dynamical properties that were not biased were improved. In …
Recent experiments have shown that the out-of-plane dielectric constant of water confined in nanoslits of graphite and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is vanishingly small. Despite extensive effort based mainly on classical force-field molecular dynamics (FFMD) approaches, the origin of this phenomenon is under debate. Here we used ab initio molecular dynamics simulations (AIMD) and AIMD-trained machine learning potentials to explore the structure and electronic properties of water confined inside graphene and hBN slits. We found that the reduced dielectric constant arises mainly from the anti-p…
Although liquid water is ubiquitous in chemical reactions at roots of life and climate on the earth, the prediction of its properties by high-level ab initio molecular dynamics simulations still represents a formidable task for quantum chemistry. In this article we present a room temperature simulation of liquid water based on the potential energy surface obtained by a many-body wave function through quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. The simulated properties are in good agreement with recent neutron scattering and X-ray experiments, particularly concerning the position of the oxygen-oxygen pe…
Nuclear quantum effects, such as zero-point energy and tunneling, cause significant changes to the structure and dynamics of hydrogen bonded systems such as liquid water. However, due to the current inability to simulate liquid water using an exact description of its electronic structure, the interplay between nuclear and electronic quantum effects remains unclear. Here we use simulations that incorporate the quantum mechanical nature of both the nuclei and electrons to provide a fully ab initio determination of the particle quantum kinetic energies, free energy change upon exchanging hydrogen…
The hydrogen-bond network of water is characterized by the presence of coordination defects relative to the ideal tetrahedral network of ice, whose fluctuations determine the static and time-dependent properties of the liquid. Because of topological constraints, such defects do not come alone, but are highly correlated coming in a plethora of different pairs. Here we discuss in detail such correlations in the case of ab initio water models and show that they have interesting similarities to regular and defective solid phases of water. Although defect correlations involve deviations from ideali…
We report calculations of the surface tension of the water-air interface using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We investigate the simulation cell size dependence of the surface tension of water from force field molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which show that the calculated surface tension increases with increasing simulation cell size, thereby illustrating that a correction for finite size effects is required for the small system used in the AIMD simulation. The AIMD simulations reveal that the double-ξ basis set overestimates the experimentally measured surface tension d…
A series of calculations on the energetics of complexation of alkaline metals with 1,10-phenanthroline are presented. It is an experimental fact that the ordering of the free energy of transfer across the water - 1,2-dichloroethane interphase is governed by the charge / size ratio of the diferent cations; the larger cations showing the lower free energy of transfer. This ordering of the free energies of transfer is reverted in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline in the organic phase. We have devised a thermodynamic cycle for the transfer process and by means of ab-initio calculations have draw…
Controlling the water contact angle on a surface is important for regulating its wettability in industrial applications, which involves developing ab initio prediction scheme of accurately predicting the angle. The scheme requires structural models for the adsorption of liquid molecules on a surface, but their reliability depend on whether the surfaces comprise insulating or metallic materials. Previous ab initio studies have focused on the estimation of the water contact angle on insulators, where the periodic-honeycomb array of water molecules was adopted as the adsorption model for the wate…
We present a density-functional theory based molecular-dynamics study of the structural, dynamical, and electronic properties of liquid methanol under ambient conditions. The calculated radial distribution functions involving the oxygen and hydroxyl hydrogen show a pronounced hydrogen bonding and compare well with recent neutron diffraction data, except for an underestimate of the oxygen-oxygen correlation. We observe that, in line with infrared spectroscopic data, the hydroxyl stretching mode is significantly red-shifted in the liquid. A substantial enhancement of the dipole moment is accompa…
Within the framework of density functional theory, the inclusion of exact exchange and non-local van der Waals/dispersion (vdW) interactions is crucial for predicting a microscopic structure of ambient liquid water that quantitatively agrees with experiment. In this work, we have used the local structure index (LSI) order parameter to analyze the local structure in such highly accurate $ab$ $initio$ liquid water. At ambient conditions, the LSI probability distribution, P($I$), was unimodal with most water molecules characterized by more disordered high-density-like local environments. With the…
Ab initio Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to determine the equilibrium properties of liquid lithium and lithium clusters at different temperatures. First-principles density-functional methods were employed to calculate the potential-energy change for each proposed change of configuration, which was then accepted or rejected according to the Metropolis Monte Carlo scheme. The resulting structural properties are compared to data from experimental measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that accurate structural information can be obtained with ab initio …
The interaction of phosphate groups with ions in an aqueous environment has a strong impact on the structure and folding processes of DNA and RNA. The dynamic variety of ionic arrangements, including both contact pairs and water separated ions, and the molecular coupling mechanisms are far from being understood. In a combined experimental and theoretical approach, we address the properties of contact ion pairs of the prototypical system dimethyl-phosphate with Na$^+$, Ca$^{2+}$, and Mg$^{2+}$ ions in water. Linear and femtosecond two-dimensional infrared (2D-IR) spectroscopy of the asymmetric …
The behavior of liquid water under an electric field is a crucial phenomenon in science and engineering. However, its detailed description at a microscopic level is difficult to achieve experimentally. Here we report on the first ab initio molecular-dynamics study on water under an electric field. We observe that the hydrogen-bond length and the molecular orientation are significantly modified at low-to-moderate field intensities. Fields beyond a threshold of about 0.35 V/Åare able to dissociate molecules and sustain an ionic current via a series of correlated proton jumps. Upon applying even …
Predicting the asymmetric structure and dynamics of solvated hydroxide and hydronium in water has been a challenging task from ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). The difficulty mainly comes from a lack of accurate and efficient exchange-correlation functional in elucidating the amphiphilic nature and the ubiquitous proton transfer behaviors of the two ions. By adopting the strongly-constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA functional in AIMD simulations, we systematically examine the amphiphilic properties, the solvation structures, the electronic structures, and the dynamic prope…
The fundamental understanding of intermolecular interactions of ionic liquids with water represents a vital extent in predicting ionic liquid properties. Intermolecular or noncovalent interactions were studied for 1,3-dimethyl imidazolium [DMIM]+ cation and nitrate [NO3]- anion with water, employing quantum mechanics (QM) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Extensive electronic structure calculations were performed first for molecular dimers, using various levels of theory and basis sets to pinpoint dimer optimized geometries and estimate binding energies in the gas phase. Many calculatio…
We calculate the dynamic structure factor S(k,omega) of liquid Ge (l-Ge) at temperature T = 1250 K, and of amorphous Ge (a-Ge) at T = 300 K, using ab initio molecular dynamics. The electronic energy is computed using density-functional theory, primarily in the generalized gradient approximation, together with a plane wave representation of the wave functions and ultra-soft pseudopotentials. We use a 64-atom cell with periodic boundary conditions, and calculate averages over runs of up to 16 ps. The calculated liquid S(k,omega) agrees qualitatively with that obtained by Hosokawa et al, using in…
We present results of \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics study of a structural transformation occurring in hot liquid sulfur under high pressure, which corresponds to the chain-breakage phenomenon recently observed experimentally by Liu \textit{et al.} [1] and to the electronic transition reported by Brazhkin \textit{et al.} [2,3]. We performed an extensive \textit{ab initio} study and confirmed the existence of one transformation separating two distinct liquid polymeric phases: one composed of short chain-like fragments and another one with very long chains. We have not observed additional…
We perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation of liquid water in the canonical ensemble at ambient conditions using the SCAN meta-GGA functional approximation, and carry out systematic comparisons with the results obtained from the GGA-level PBE functional, and Tkatchenko-Scheffler van der Waals (vdW) dispersion correction inclusive PBE functional. We analyze various properties of liquid water including radial distribution functions, oxygen-oxygen-oxygen triplet angular distribution, tetrahedrality, hydrogen bonds, diffusion coefficients, ring statistics, density of states, band ga…
Water is the matrix of life and is generally considered a homogeneous, uniform, liquid. Recent experiments report that water is instead a two-state liquid. However, subsequently, these findings were contested. The structure of water and whether we should think of it as uniform therefore remains an open question. Here, we report femtosecond elastic second harmonic scattering (fs-ESHS) of liquid water in comparison to an isotropic liquid (CCl4) and show that water is indeed a non-uniform liquid, The coherent fs-ESHS intensity was interpreted, using molecular dynamics simulations, as arising from…
Several static and dynamic properties of liquid Cu, Ag and Au at thermodynamic states near their respective melting points, have been evaluated by means of the orbital free ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation method. The calculated static structure shows good agreement with the available X-ray and neutron diffraction data. As for the dynamic properties, the calculated dynamic structure factors point to the existence of collective density excitations along with a positive dispersion for l-Cu and l-Ag. Several transport coefficients have been obtained which show a reasonable agreement with t…
A longstanding question in water research is the possibility that supercooled liquid water can undergo a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLT) into high- and low-density liquids. We used several complementary molecular simulation techniques to evaluate the possibility of an LLT in an ab initio neural network model of water trained on density functional theory calculations with the SCAN exchange correlation functional. We conclusively show the existence of a first-order LLT and an associated critical point in the SCAN description of water, representing the first definitive computational evidence…
We report the first measurement of size-resolved photoelectron angular distributions for the valence orbitals of water clusters with up to 20 molecules. A systematic decrease of the photoelectron anisotropy is found for clusters with up to 5-6 molecules, and most remarkably, convergence of the anisotropy for larger clusters. We suggest the latter to be the result of a local short-range scattering potential that is fully described by a unit of 5-6 molecules. The cluster data and a detailed electron scattering model are used to predict liquid water anisotropies. Reasonable agreement with experim…
Among all fluids, water has always been of special concern for scientists from a broad variety of research fields due to its rich behavior. In particular, some questions remain unanswered nowadays concerning the temperature dependence of bulk and interfacial transport properties of supercooled and liquid water, e.g. regarding the fundamentals of the violation of the Stokes-Einstein relation in the supercooled regime or the subtle relation between structure and dynamical properties. Here we investigated the temperature dependence of the bulk transport properties from ab initio molecular dynamic…
Ab-initio electron - liquid phase xenon fully differential cross-sections for electrons scattering in liquid xenon are developed from a solution of the Dirac-Fock scattering equations, using a recently developed framework [1] which considers multipole polarizabilities, a non-local treatment of exchange, and screening and coherent scattering effects. A multi-term solution of Boltzmann's equation accounting for the full anisotropic nature of the differential cross-section is used to calculate transport properties of excess electrons in liquid xenon. The results were found to agree to within 25% …
A hierarchical parallelization has been implemented in a new unified code PIMD-SMASH for ab initio simulation where the replicas and the Born-Oppenheimer forces are parallelized. It is demonstrated that ab initio path integral molecular dynamics simulations can be carried out very efficiently for systems up to a few tens of water molecules. The code was then used to study a Diels-Alder reaction of cyclopentadiene and butenone by ab initio string method. A reduction in the reaction energy barrier is found in the presence of hydrogen-bonded water, in accordance with experiment.
Water dissociation is a rate limiting step in many industrially important chemical reactions. In this investigation, climbing image nudged elastic band (CINEB) method, within the framework of density functional theory, is used to report the activation energies (E a ) of water dissociation on Cu(111) surface with a vacancy. Introduction of vacancy results in a reduced coordination of the dissociated products, which facilitates their availability for reactions that involve water dissociation as an intermediate step. Activation energy for dissociation of water reduces by nearly 0.2 eV on Cu(111) …
The solvation of carbon monoxide (CO) in liquid water is important for understanding its toxicological effects and biochemical roles. In this paper, we use ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) and CCSD(T)-F12 calculations to assess the accuracy of the Straub and Karplus molecular mechanical (MM) model for CO(aq). The CCSD(T)-F12 CO--H2O potential energy surfaces show that the most stable structure corresponds to water donating a hydrogen bond to the C center. The MM-calculated surface it incorrectly predicts that the O atom is a stronger hydrogen bond acceptor than the C atom. The AIMD simulati…

In this work, we report the results of a series of density functional theory (DFT) based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of ambient liquid water using a hierarchy of exchange-correlation (XC) functionals to investigate the individual and collective effects of exact exchange (Exx), via the PBE0 hybrid functional, non-local vdW/dispersion interactions, via a fully self-consistent density-dependent dispersion correction, and approximate nuclear quantum effects (aNQE), via a 30 K increase in the simulation temperature, on the microscopic structure of liquid water. Based on these AI…
The structure of liquid water at ambient conditions is studied in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations using van der Waals (vdW) density-functional theory, i.e. using the new exchange-correlation functionals optPBE-vdW and vdW-DF2. Inclusion of the more isotropic vdW interactions counteracts highly directional hydrogen-bonds, which are enhanced by standard functionals. This brings about a softening of the microscopic structure of water, as seen from the broadening of angular distribution functions and, in particular, from the much lower and broader first peak in the oxygen-oxygen pair-corr…
Interactions between molecules and electrode surfaces play a key role in electrochemical processes and are a subject of extensive research, both experimental and theoretical. In this manuscript, we address the water dissociation reaction on a Pd(111) electrode surface, modelled as a slab embedded in an external electric field. We aim at unraveling the relationship between surface charge and zero-point-energy in aiding or hindering this reaction. We calculate energy barriers with dispersion-corrected density-functional theory and an efficient parallel implementation of the nudged-elastic-band m…
Using a neural network potential (ANI-1ccx) generated from quantum data on a large data set of molecules and pairs of molecules, isothermal, constant volume simulations demonstrate that the model can be as accurate as ab initio molecular dynamics for simulations of pure liquid water and the aqueous solvation of a methane molecule. No theoretical or experimental data for the liquid phase is used to train the model, suggesting that the ANI-1ccx approach is an effective method to link high level ab initio methods to potentials for large scale simulations.
Understanding the reactivity and spectroscopy of aqueous solutions at the atomistic level is crucial for the elucidation and design of chemical processes. However, the simulation of these systems requires addressing the formidable challenges of treating the quantum nature of both the electrons and nuclei. Exploiting our recently developed methods that provide acceleration by up to two orders of magnitude, we combine path integral simulations with on-the-fly evaluation of the electronic structure at the hybrid density functional theory level to capture the interplay between nuclear quantum effe…
Spin degrees of freedom of water molecule in gas and liquid state were investigated in order to provide a reasonable answer about the unsolved problem of a long-term behavior of water spin isomers. The approach used involves an assumption that molecules change their spin state from a pure state to a mixed one when they interact with some sorts of adsorbent surface. Some models and conceptions of the quantum information processing were used.
The lack of accurate low-energy electron scattering cross sections for liquid water is a substantial source of uncertainty in the modelling of radiation chemistry and biology. The use of existing amorphous ice scattering cross sections for lack of liquid data has been discussed controversially over decades. Here, we compare experimental photoemission data of liquid water with corresponding predictions using amorphous ice cross sections, with the aim of resolving the debate regarding the difference of electron scattering in liquid water and amorphous ice. We find very similar scattering propert…
Twenty years ago Poole et al. (Nature 360, 324, 1992) suggested that the anomalous properties of supercooled water may be caused by a critical point that terminates a line of liquid-liquid separation of lower-density and higher-density water. Here we present an explicit thermodynamic model based on this hypothesis, which describes all available experimental data for supercooled water with better quality and with fewer adjustable parameters than any other model suggested so far. Liquid water at low temperatures is viewed as an 'athermal solution' of two molecular structures with different entro…
Yagasaki et al. present results from a molecular dynamics trajectory illustrating coarsening of ice, which they interpret as evidence of transient coexistence between two distinct supercooled phases of liquid water. We point out that neither two distinct liquids nor criticality are demonstrated in this simulation study. Instead, the illustrated trajectory is consistent with coarsening behaviors analyzed and predicted in earlier works by others.
Accounting for electrons and nuclei simultaneously is a powerful capability of ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD). However, AIMD is often unable to accurately reproduce properties of systems such as water due to inaccuracies in the underlying electronic density functionals. This shortcoming is often addressed by added empirical corrections and/or increasing the simulation temperature. We present here a maximum-entropy approach to directly incorporate limited experimental data via a minimal bias. Biased AIMD simulations of water and an excess proton in water are shown to give significantly imp…
Fingerprints of antiaromaticity in the negative ion (Li$_3$Al$_4$)$^-$, this species being realizable via a laser vaporization technique, are revealed by means of an \emph{ab initio} quantum-chemical investigation. First, the ground-state equilibrium geometry of this ion is predicted. Also, for the corresponding inhomogeneous electron liquid, the characteristics of the HOMO are studied, both for the square and the rectangular Al$_4$ geometry in two low-lying isomers of the negative ion. There is no particular sensitivity to the change in geometry of the Al$_4$ configuration. Therefore, we have…
High harmonic generation (HHG) takes place in all phases of matter. In gaseous atomic and molecular media, it has been extensively studied and is very well-understood. In solids research is ongoing, but a consensus is forming for the dominant microscopic HHG mechanisms. In liquids on the other hand, no established theory yet exit and approaches developed for gases and solids are generally inapplicable, hindering our current understanding. We develop here a powerful and reliable ab-initio cluster-based approach for describing the nonlinear interactions between isotropic bulk liquids and intense…
Despite great efforts over the past 50 years, the simulation of water still presents significant challenges and open questions. At room temperature and pressure, the collective molecular interactions and dynamics of water molecules may form local structural arrangements that are non-trivial to classify. Here we employ a data-driven approach built on Smooth Overlap of Atomic Position (SOAP) that allow us to compare and classify how widely used classical models represent liquid water. Macroscopically, the obtained results are rationalized based on water thermodynamic observables. Microscopically…
Liquids generally become more ordered upon cooling. However, it has been a long-standing debate on whether such structural ordering in liquid water takes place continuously or discontinuosly: continuum vs. mixture models. Here, by computer simulations of three popular water models and analysis of recent scattering experiment data, we show that, in the structure factor of water, there are two overlapped peaks hidden in the apparent "first diffraction peak", one of which corresponds to the neighboring O-O distance as in ordinary liquids and the other to the longest periodicity of density waves i…
