Liquids generally become more ordered upon cooling. However, it has been a long-standing debate on whether such structural ordering in liquid water takes place continuously or discontinuosly: continuum vs. mixture models. Here, by computer simulations of three popular water models and analysis of recent scattering experiment data, we show that, in the structure factor of water, there are two overlapped peaks hidden in the apparent "first diffraction peak", one of which corresponds to the neighboring O-O distance as in ordinary liquids and the other to the longest periodicity of density waves in a tetrahedral structure. This unambiguously proves the coexistence of two local structural motifs. Our findings not only provide key clues to settle long-standing controversy on the water structure but also allow experimental access to the degree and range of structural ordering in liquid water.
Understanding phases of water molecules based on local structure is essential for understanding their anomalous properties. However, due to complicated structural motifs formed via hydrogen bonds, conventional order parameters represent the water molecules incompletely. In this paper, we develop a GCIceNet, which automatically generates machine-based order parameters for classifying the phases of the water molecules via supervised and unsupervised learning. Multiple graph convolutional layers in the GCIceNet can learn topological informations of the complex hydrogen bond networks. It shows a s…
Because of the negative inclination of the solid-liquid phase separation line in water, ice Ih melts on compression. On further increase in pressure the liquid water transforms into a high density metastable glassy state, characterized by a rapid approach to zero diffusion coefficient and an absence of any crystalline order in the static structure factor. The vitrification is found to occur even at high temperatures (T > 250 K). We study this glass transition process at four temperatures (80 K, 250 K, 300 K and 320 K). The transition pressure increases with increase in temperature, as expected…
Highly concentrated aqueous lithium chloride solutions were investigated by classical molecular dynamics (MD) and reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) simulations. At first MD calculations were carried out applying twenty-nine combinations of ion-water interaction models at four salt concentrations. The structural predictions of the different models were compared, the contributions of different structural motifs to the partial pair correlation functions (PPCF) were determined. Particle configurations obtained from MD simulations were further refined using the RMC method to get better agreement with exper…
Spherical confinement can alter the properties of a dipolar fluid in several different ways. In an atomistic molecular dynamics simulation study of two different dipolar liquids (SPC/E water and a model Stockmayer fluid) confined to nanocavities of different radii ranging from Rc=1nm to 4nm, we find that the Kirkwood correlation factor remains surprisingly small in water, but not so in model Stockmayer liquid. This gives rise to an anomalous ultrafast relaxation of the total dipole moment time correlation function (DMTCF). The static dielectric constant of water under nanoconfinement (computed…

When a hydrophilic solute in water is suddenly turned into a hydrophobic species, for instance, by photoionization, a layer of hydrated water molecules forms around the solute on a time scale of a few picoseconds. We study the dynamic build-up of the hydration shell around a hydrophobic solute on the basis of a time-dependent dielectric continuum model. Information about the solvent is spectroscopically extracted from the relaxation dynamics of a test dipole inside a static Onsager sphere in the nonequilibrium solvent. The growth process is described phenomenologically within two approaches. F…
Much attention has been devoted to water's metastable phase behavior, including polyamorphism (multiple amorphous solid phases), and the hypothesized liquid-liquid transition and associated critical point. However, the possible relationship between these phenomena remains incompletely understood. Using molecular dynamics simulations of the realistic TIP4P/2005 model, we found a striking signature of the liquid-liquid critical point in the structure of water glasses, manifested as a pronounced increase in long-range density fluctuations at pressures proximate to the critical pressure. By contra…
The spectroscopy and structural dynamics of a deep eutectic mixture (KSCN/acetamide) with varying water content is investigated from 2D IR (with the C-N stretch vibration of the SCN$^-$ anions as the reporter) and THz spectroscopy. Molecular dynamics simulations correctly describe the non-trivial dependence of both spectroscopic signatures depending on water content. For the 2D IR spectra, the MD simulations relate the steep increase in the cross relaxation rate at high water content to parallel alignment of packed SCN$^-$ anions. Conversely, the non-linear increase of the THz absorption with …

Electron-hole excitation theory is used to unveil the role of nuclear quantum effects on the X-ray absorption spectral signatures of water, whose structure is computed via path-integral molecular dynamics with the MB-pol intermolecular potential model. Compared to spectra generated from the classically modeled water, quantum nuclei introduce important effects on the spectra in terms of both the energies and line shapes. Fluctuations due to delocalized protons influence the short-range ordering of the hydrogen bond network via changes in the intramolecular covalence, which broaden the pre-edge …
