We present a density-functional theory based molecular-dynamics study of the structural, dynamical, and electronic properties of liquid methanol under ambient conditions. The calculated radial distribution functions involving the oxygen and hydroxyl hydrogen show a pronounced hydrogen bonding and compare well with recent neutron diffraction data, except for an underestimate of the oxygen-oxygen correlation. We observe that, in line with infrared spectroscopic data, the hydroxyl stretching mode is significantly red-shifted in the liquid. A substantial enhancement of the dipole moment is accompanied by significant fluctuations due to thermal motion. Our results provide valuable data for improvement of empirical potentials.
Environmental molecular beam experiments are used to examine water interactions with liquid methanol films at temperatures from 170 K to 190 K. We find that water molecules with 0.32 eV incident kinetic energy are efficiently trapped by the liquid methanol. The scattering process is characterized by an efficient loss of energy to surface modes with a minor component of the incident beam that is inelastically scattered. Thermal desorption of water molecules has a well characterized Arrhenius form with an activation energy of 0.47{\pm}0.11 eV and pre-exponential factor of 4.6 {\times} 10^(15{\pm…
Imidazolium-based ionic liquids are widely used in conjunction with molecular liquids for various applications. Solvation, miscibility and similar properties are of fundamental importance for successful implementation of theoretical schemes. This work reports competitive solvation of the 1,3-dimethylimidazolium cation by water and methanol. Employing molecular dynamics simulations powered by semiempirical Hamiltonian (electronic structure level of description), the local structure nearly imidazolium cation is described in terms of radial distribution functions. Although water and methanol are …
Transport properties of liquid methanol and ethanol are predicted by molecular dynamics simulation. The molecular models for the alcohols are rigid, non-polarizable and of united-atom type. They were developed in preceding work using experimental vapor-liquid equilibrium data only. Self- and Maxwell-Stefan diffusion coefficients as well as the shear viscosity of methanol, ethanol and their binary mixture are determined using equilibrium molecular dynamics and the Green-Kubo formalism. Non-equilibrium molecular dynamics is used for predicting the thermal conductivity of the two pure substances.…

We have investigated the simultaneous absorption of near-infrared photons by pairs of neighboring molecules in liquid methanol. Simultaneous absorption by two OH-stretching modes is found to occur at an energy higher than the sum of the two absorbing modes. This frequency shift arises from interaction between the modes, and its value has been used to determine the average coupling between neighboring methanol molecules. We find a rms coupling strength of 46+/-1 cm-1, much larger than can be explained from transition-dipole coupling, suggesting that hydrogen-bond mediated interactions between n…
We present results of theoretical description and numerical calculation of the dynamics of molecular liquids based on the Reference Interaction Site Model / Mode-Coupling Theory. They include the temperature-pressure(density) dependence of the translational diffusion coefficients and orientational relaxation times for acetonitrile and methanol in water at infinite dilution. Anomalous behavior, i.e. the increase in mobility with density, is observed for the orientational relaxation time of methanol, while acetonitrile does not show any deviations from the usual. This effect is in qualitative ag…

We present results of theoretical study and numerical calculation of the dynamics of molecular liquids based on combination of the memory equation formalism and the reference interaction site model - RISM. Memory equations for the site-site intermediate scattering functions are studied in the mode-coupling approximation for the first order memory kernels, while equilibrium properties such as site-site static structure factors are deduced from RISM. The results include the temperature-density(pressure) dependence of translational diffusion coefficients D and orientational relaxation times t for…
The dynamics of polarized fluorescence in NADH at 460 nm under two-photon excitation at 720 nm by femtosecond laser pulses in water-methanol solutions has been studied experimentally and theoretically as a function of methanol concentration. A number of fluorescence parameters have been determined from experiment by means of the global fit procedure and then compared with the results reported by other authors. A comprehensive analysis of experimental errors was made. The interpretation of the experimental results obtained was supported by ab initio calculations of the structure of NADH and NMN…
We present a capacitance method to measure the adsorption of rod-like nematogens (4-cyano-4'-pentylbiphenyl, 5CB) from a binary liquid 5CB/methanol solution into a monolithic mesoporous silica membrane traversed by tubular pores with radii of 5.4 nm at room temperature. The resulting adsorption isotherm is reminiscent of classical type II isotherms of gas adsorption in mesoporous media. Its analysis by a model for adsorption from binary solutions, as inspired by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) approach for gas adsorption on solid surfaces, indicates that the first adsorbed monolayer consists …

The electronic and nuclear dynamics in methanol, following 156~nm photoexcitation, are investigated by combining a detailed analysis of time-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy experiments with electronic structure calculations. The photoexcitation pump pulse is followed by a delayed 260~nm photoionization probe pulse, to produce photoelectrons that are analyzed by velocity map imaging. The yield of mass-resolved ions, measured with similar experimental conditions, are found to exhibit the same time-dependence as specific photoelectron spectral features. Energy-resolved signal onset and decay …
Methanol occupies a central role in chemical synthesis and is considered an ideal candidate for cleaner fuel storage and transportation. It can be catalyzed from water and volatile organic compounds such as carbon dioxide, thereby offering an attractive solution for reducing carbon emissions. However molecular-level experimental observations of the catalytic process are scarce, and most existing catalysts tend to rely on empirically optimized, expensive and complex nano- composite materials. This lack of molecular-level insights has precluded the development of simpler, more cost-effective alt…
We present results of \textit{ab initio} molecular dynamics study of a structural transformation occurring in hot liquid sulfur under high pressure, which corresponds to the chain-breakage phenomenon recently observed experimentally by Liu \textit{et al.} [1] and to the electronic transition reported by Brazhkin \textit{et al.} [2,3]. We performed an extensive \textit{ab initio} study and confirmed the existence of one transformation separating two distinct liquid polymeric phases: one composed of short chain-like fragments and another one with very long chains. We have not observed additional…
Infrared pump-probe spectroscopy provides detailed information on the dynamics of hydrogen-bonded liquids. Due to dissipation of the absorbed pump pulse energy, also thermal equilibration dynamics contributes to the observed signal. Disentangling this contribution from the molecular response remains an open challenge. Performing non-equilibrium molecular dynamics simulat ions of liquid deuterated methanol, we show that faster molecular vibrational relaxation and slower heat diffusion are decoupled and occur on different length scale. Transient structures of the hydrogen bonding network influen…
In order to obtain a comprehensive understanding of both thermodynamics and kinetics of water dissociation on TiO2, the reactions between liquid water and perfect and defective rutile TiO2 (110) surfaces were investigated using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The results showed that the free-energy barrier (~ 4.4 kcal/mol) is too high for a spontaneous dissociation of water on the perfect rutile (110) surface at a low temperature. The most stable oxygen vacancy (Vo1) on the rutile (110) surface cannot promote the dissociation of water, while other unstable oxygen vacancies can signif…
Weak hydrogen bonds, such as O-H$\cdotsπ$ and C-H$\cdots$O, are pivotal in a wide range of important natural and industrial processes including biochemical assembly, molecular recognition, and chemical selectivity. In this study we use neutron diffraction in conjunction with comprehensive H/D isotopic substitution to obtain a detailed spatial and orientational picture of the structure in benzene-methanol solution. This system provides us with a prototypical situation where the aromatic ring can act as an hydrogen bond acceptor (via the $π$ electron density) and/or a hydrogen bond donor (via th…
In this work, the memory equation approach is applied for theoretical study of dynamics of polar molecular liquids described by the interaction site model. The study includes the temperature-density(pressure) dependence of the translational diffusion coefficients D and orientational relaxation times t for infinitely dilute solutions of acetonitrile and methanol in water, and methanol in acetonitrile. Calculations are performed over the range of temperatures and densities employing the SPC/E model for water and optimized site-site potentials for acetonitrile and methanol. Despite an approximate…
The X-ray emission spectrum of liquid ethanol was calculated using density functional theory and a semi-classical approximation to the Kramers-Heisenberg formula including core-hole-induced dynamics. Our spectrum agrees well with the experimental spectrum. We found that the intensity ratio between the two peaks at 526 and 527 eV assigned as 10a' and 3a" depends not only on the hydrogen bonding network around the target molecule, but also on the intramolecular conformation. This effect is absent in liquid methanol and demonstrates the high sensitivity of X-ray emission to molecular structure. T…
Methanol-water liquid mixtures have been investigated by high-energy synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction at low temperatures. We are thus able to report the first complete sets of both X-ray and neutron weighted total scattering structure factors over the entire composition range (at 12 different methanol concentrations (x$_M$) from 10 to 100 mol%) and at temperatures from ambient down to the freezing points of the mixtures. The new diffraction data may later be used as reference in future theoretical and simulation studies. The measured data are interpreted by molecular dynamics simulat…
We calculate the dynamic structure factor S(k,omega) of liquid Ge (l-Ge) at temperature T = 1250 K, and of amorphous Ge (a-Ge) at T = 300 K, using ab initio molecular dynamics. The electronic energy is computed using density-functional theory, primarily in the generalized gradient approximation, together with a plane wave representation of the wave functions and ultra-soft pseudopotentials. We use a 64-atom cell with periodic boundary conditions, and calculate averages over runs of up to 16 ps. The calculated liquid S(k,omega) agrees qualitatively with that obtained by Hosokawa et al, using in…
Formation of microstructure in homogeneous associated liquids is analysed through the density-density pair correlation functions, both in direct and reciprocal space, as well as an effective local one-body density function. This is illustrated through a molecular dynamics study of two neat alcohols, namely methanol and \emph{tert}-butanol, which have a rich microstructure: chain-like molecular association for the former and micelle-like for the latter. The relation to hydrogen bonding interaction is demonstrated. The apparent failure to find microstructure in water -a stronger hydrogen bonding…
Several static and dynamic properties of liquid Cu, Ag and Au at thermodynamic states near their respective melting points, have been evaluated by means of the orbital free ab-initio molecular dynamics simulation method. The calculated static structure shows good agreement with the available X-ray and neutron diffraction data. As for the dynamic properties, the calculated dynamic structure factors point to the existence of collective density excitations along with a positive dispersion for l-Cu and l-Ag. Several transport coefficients have been obtained which show a reasonable agreement with t…
Ab initio Monte Carlo simulations have been performed to determine the equilibrium properties of liquid lithium and lithium clusters at different temperatures. First-principles density-functional methods were employed to calculate the potential-energy change for each proposed change of configuration, which was then accepted or rejected according to the Metropolis Monte Carlo scheme. The resulting structural properties are compared to data from experimental measurements and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. It is shown that accurate structural information can be obtained with ab initio …
Ab-initio electron - liquid phase xenon fully differential cross-sections for electrons scattering in liquid xenon are developed from a solution of the Dirac-Fock scattering equations, using a recently developed framework [1] which considers multipole polarizabilities, a non-local treatment of exchange, and screening and coherent scattering effects. A multi-term solution of Boltzmann's equation accounting for the full anisotropic nature of the differential cross-section is used to calculate transport properties of excess electrons in liquid xenon. The results were found to agree to within 25% …
We report calculations of the surface tension of the water-air interface using ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations. We investigate the simulation cell size dependence of the surface tension of water from force field molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, which show that the calculated surface tension increases with increasing simulation cell size, thereby illustrating that a correction for finite size effects is required for the small system used in the AIMD simulation. The AIMD simulations reveal that the double-ξ basis set overestimates the experimentally measured surface tension d…
We have applied path integral simulations, in combination with new ab initio based water potentials, to investigate nuclear quantum effects in liquid water. Because direct ab initio path integral simulations are computationally expensive, a flexible water model is parameterized by force-matching to density functional theory-based molecular dynamics simulations. The resulting effective potentials provide an inexpensive replacement for direct ab inito molecular dynamics simulations and allow efficient simulation of nuclear quantum effects. Static and dynamic properties of liquid water at ambient…
Although liquid water is ubiquitous in chemical reactions at roots of life and climate on the earth, the prediction of its properties by high-level ab initio molecular dynamics simulations still represents a formidable task for quantum chemistry. In this article we present a room temperature simulation of liquid water based on the potential energy surface obtained by a many-body wave function through quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. The simulated properties are in good agreement with recent neutron scattering and X-ray experiments, particularly concerning the position of the oxygen-oxygen pe…
Fingerprints of antiaromaticity in the negative ion (Li$_3$Al$_4$)$^-$, this species being realizable via a laser vaporization technique, are revealed by means of an \emph{ab initio} quantum-chemical investigation. First, the ground-state equilibrium geometry of this ion is predicted. Also, for the corresponding inhomogeneous electron liquid, the characteristics of the HOMO are studied, both for the square and the rectangular Al$_4$ geometry in two low-lying isomers of the negative ion. There is no particular sensitivity to the change in geometry of the Al$_4$ configuration. Therefore, we have…
The application of newly developed first-principle modeling techniques to liquid water deepens our understanding of the microscopic origins of its unusual macroscopic properties and behaviour. Here, we review two novel ab initio computational methods: second-generation Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics and decomposition analysis based on absolutely localized molecular orbitals. We show that these two methods in combination not only enable ab initio molecular dynamics simulations on previously inaccessible time and length scales, but also provide unprecedented insights into the nature of hydrog…
Within the framework of density functional theory, the inclusion of exact exchange and non-local van der Waals/dispersion (vdW) interactions is crucial for predicting a microscopic structure of ambient liquid water that quantitatively agrees with experiment. In this work, we have used the local structure index (LSI) order parameter to analyze the local structure in such highly accurate $ab$ $initio$ liquid water. At ambient conditions, the LSI probability distribution, P($I$), was unimodal with most water molecules characterized by more disordered high-density-like local environments. With the…
We regularize the potential distribution framework to calculate the excess free energy of liquid water simulated with the BLYP-D density functional. The calculated free energy is in fair agreement with experiments but the excess internal energy and hence also the excess entropy are not. Our work emphasizes the importance of thermodynamic characterization in assessing the quality of electron density functionals in describing liquid water and hydration phenomena.
High harmonic generation (HHG) takes place in all phases of matter. In gaseous atomic and molecular media, it has been extensively studied and is very well-understood. In solids research is ongoing, but a consensus is forming for the dominant microscopic HHG mechanisms. In liquids on the other hand, no established theory yet exit and approaches developed for gases and solids are generally inapplicable, hindering our current understanding. We develop here a powerful and reliable ab-initio cluster-based approach for describing the nonlinear interactions between isotropic bulk liquids and intense…
In this work, we report the results of a series of density functional theory (DFT) based ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulations of ambient liquid water using a hierarchy of exchange-correlation (XC) functionals to investigate the individual and collective effects of exact exchange (Exx), via the PBE0 hybrid functional, non-local vdW/dispersion interactions, via a fully self-consistent density-dependent dispersion correction, and approximate nuclear quantum effects (aNQE), via a 30 K increase in the simulation temperature, on the microscopic structure of liquid water. Based on these AI…
Understanding the reactivity and spectroscopy of aqueous solutions at the atomistic level is crucial for the elucidation and design of chemical processes. However, the simulation of these systems requires addressing the formidable challenges of treating the quantum nature of both the electrons and nuclei. Exploiting our recently developed methods that provide acceleration by up to two orders of magnitude, we combine path integral simulations with on-the-fly evaluation of the electronic structure at the hybrid density functional theory level to capture the interplay between nuclear quantum effe…
We use ab initio molecular dynamics as a basis for quasi-chemical theory evaluation of the free energy of water near conventional liquid thermodynamic states. The PW91, PBE, and revised PBE (rPBE) functionals are employed. The oxygen radial density distribution, gOO(r), using the rPBE functional is in reasonable agreement with current experiments, whereas the PW91 and PBE functionals predict a more structured gOO(r). The diffusion coefficient with the rPBE functional is in reasonable accord with experiments. Using a maximum entropy procedure, we obtain x_0 from the coordination number distribu…
We perform ab initio molecular dynamics (AIMD) simulation of liquid water in the canonical ensemble at ambient conditions using the SCAN meta-GGA functional approximation, and carry out systematic comparisons with the results obtained from the GGA-level PBE functional, and Tkatchenko-Scheffler van der Waals (vdW) dispersion correction inclusive PBE functional. We analyze various properties of liquid water including radial distribution functions, oxygen-oxygen-oxygen triplet angular distribution, tetrahedrality, hydrogen bonds, diffusion coefficients, ring statistics, density of states, band ga…
Using a neural network potential (ANI-1ccx) generated from quantum data on a large data set of molecules and pairs of molecules, isothermal, constant volume simulations demonstrate that the model can be as accurate as ab initio molecular dynamics for simulations of pure liquid water and the aqueous solvation of a methane molecule. No theoretical or experimental data for the liquid phase is used to train the model, suggesting that the ANI-1ccx approach is an effective method to link high level ab initio methods to potentials for large scale simulations.
A comprehensive microscopic understanding of ambient liquid water is a major challenge for $ab$ $initio$ simulations as it simultaneously requires an accurate quantum mechanical description of the underlying potential energy surface (PES) as well as extensive sampling of configuration space. Due to the presence of light atoms (e.g., H or D), nuclear quantum fluctuations lead to observable changes in the structural properties of liquid water (e.g., isotope effects), and therefore provide yet another challenge for $ab$ $initio$ approaches. In this work, we demonstrate that the combination of dis…
We have synthesized boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) in an arc in presence of boron and nitrogen species only, without transition metals. We find that BNNTs are often attached to pure boron nanoparticles, suggesting that root-growth is a likely mechanism for their formation. To gain further insight into this process we have studied key mechanisms for root growth of BNNTs on the surface of a liquid boron droplet by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. We find that nitrogen atoms reside predominantly on the droplet surface where they organize to form boron nitride islands below 2400 K. To mi…
The ammonia dimer (NH3)2 has been investigated using high--level ab initio quantum chemistry methods and density functional theory (DFT). The structure and energetics of important isomers is obtained to unprecedented accuracy without resorting to experiment. The global minimum of eclipsed C_s symmetry is characterized by a significantly bent hydrogen bond which deviates from linearity by about 20 degrees. In addition, the so-called cyclic C_{2h} structure is extremely close in energy on an overall flat potential energy surface. It is demonstrated that none of the currently available (GGA, meta…
Water is of the utmost importance for life and technology. However, a genuinely predictive ab initio model of water has eluded scientists. We demonstrate that a fully ab initio approach, relying on the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) density functional, provides such a description of water. SCAN accurately describes the balance among covalent bonds, hydrogen bonds, and van der Waals interactions that dictates the structure and dynamics of liquid water. Notably, SCAN captures the density difference between water and ice I{\it h} at ambient conditions, as well as many import…
Nuclear quantum effects, such as zero-point energy and tunneling, cause significant changes to the structure and dynamics of hydrogen bonded systems such as liquid water. However, due to the current inability to simulate liquid water using an exact description of its electronic structure, the interplay between nuclear and electronic quantum effects remains unclear. Here we use simulations that incorporate the quantum mechanical nature of both the nuclei and electrons to provide a fully ab initio determination of the particle quantum kinetic energies, free energy change upon exchanging hydrogen…
In this study we investigate the nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) on the acidity constant (pKA) of liquid water isotopologues at the ambient condition by path integral molecular dynamics (PIMD) simulations. We compared simulations using a fully explicit solvent model with a classical polarizable force field, density functional tight binding, and ab initio density functional theory, which correspond to empirical, semiempirical, and ab initio PIMD simulations, respectively. The centroid variable with respect to the proton coordination number of a water molecule was restrained to compute the gradie…
A parameterization strategy for molecular models on the basis of force fields is proposed, which allows a rapid development of models for small molecules by using results from quantum mechanical (QM) ab initio calculations and thermodynamic data. The geometry of the molecular models is specified according to the atom positions determined by QM energy minimization. The electrostatic interactions are modeled by reducing the electron density distribution to point dipoles and point quadrupoles located in the center of mass of the molecules. Dispersive and repulsive interactions are described by Le…
The study of liquid-liquid phase transition has attracted considerable attention. One interesting example of such phenomenon is phosphorus for which the existence a first-order phase transition between a low density insulating molecular phase and a conducting polymeric phase has been experimentally established. In this paper, we model this transition by an ab-initio quality molecular dynamics simulation and explore a large portion of the liquid section of the phase diagram. We draw the liquid-liquid coexistence curve and determine that it terminates into a second-order critical point. Close to…
A longstanding question in water research is the possibility that supercooled liquid water can undergo a liquid-liquid phase transition (LLT) into high- and low-density liquids. We used several complementary molecular simulation techniques to evaluate the possibility of an LLT in an ab initio neural network model of water trained on density functional theory calculations with the SCAN exchange correlation functional. We conclusively show the existence of a first-order LLT and an associated critical point in the SCAN description of water, representing the first definitive computational evidence…
The structure of liquid water at ambient conditions is studied in ab initio molecular dynamics simulations using van der Waals (vdW) density-functional theory, i.e. using the new exchange-correlation functionals optPBE-vdW and vdW-DF2. Inclusion of the more isotropic vdW interactions counteracts highly directional hydrogen-bonds, which are enhanced by standard functionals. This brings about a softening of the microscopic structure of water, as seen from the broadening of angular distribution functions and, in particular, from the much lower and broader first peak in the oxygen-oxygen pair-corr…
Experiments and computer simulations have shown that the melt-ing temperature of solid hydrogen drops with pressure above about 65 GPa, suggesting that a liquid state might exist at low temperatures. It has also been suggested that this low temperature liquid state might be non-molecular and metallic, although evidence for such behaviour is lacking. Here, we report results for hydrogen at high pressures using ab initio path-integral molecular dynamics methods, which include a description of the quantum motion of the protons at finite temperatures. We have determined the melting temperature as …
Knowledge of the electronic stopping curve for swift ions, $S_e(v)$, particularly around the Bragg peak, is important for understanding radiation damage. Experimentally, however, the determination of such feature for light ions is very challenging, especially in disordered systems such as liquid water and biological tissue. Recent developments in real-time time-dependent density functional theory (rt-TDDFT) have enabled the calculation of $S_e(v)$ along nm-sized trajectories. However, it is still a challenge to obtain a meaningful statistically averaged $S_e(v)$ that can be compared to observa…
The decomposition of ethylene carbonate (EC) during the initial growth of solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films at the solvent-graphitic anode interface is critical to lithium ion battery operations. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations of explicit liquid EC/graphite interfaces are conducted to study these electrochemical reactions. We show that carbon edge terminations are crucial at this stage, and that achievable experimental conditions can lead to surprisingly fast EC breakdown mechanisms, yielding decomposition products seen in experiments but not previously predicted.
Many-body perturbation theory within the G$_0$W$_0$ approximation is used to determine molecular orbital level alignment at a liquid water/Pt(111) interface generated through $ab~ initio$ molecular dynamics. Molecular orbital energy levels are shown to depend both on the position of H$_2$O molecules within the liquid relative to the surface and the details of their local bonding environment. Standard density functional theory calculations disagree qualitatively with level alignment predicted by many-body perturbation theory.
We present a simple and accurate computational method, which facilitates ab-initio path-integral molecular dynamics simulations, where the quantum mechanical nature of the nuclei is explicitly taken into account, at essentially no additional computational cost in comparison to the corresponding calculation using classical nuclei. The predictive power of the proposed quantum ring-polymer contraction method is demonstrated by computing various static and dynamic properties of liquid water at ambient conditions. This development permits to routinely include nuclear quantum effects in ab-initio mo…
