In this paper a general and unified treatment of the DQE is exposed, both in the space-domain and in the frequency-domain. The meaning of the DQE as quantum efficiency appears to be of paramount importance for a correct interpretation of the physical parameters involved in its formulation and measurement. The treatment in the frequency-domain turns out to be a direct extension of that in the space-domain. An operational procedure is introduced to consider the effect of the filtering of the detector in the space-domain.
Low dose electron imaging applications such as electron cyro-microscopy are now benefitting from the improved performance and flexibility of recently introduced electron imaging detectors in which electrons are directly incident on backthinned CMOS sensors. There are currently three commercially available detectors of this type: the Direct Electron DE 20, the FEI Falcon II and the Gatan K2 Summit. These have different characteristics and so it is important to compare their imaging properties carefully with a view to optimising how each is used. Results at 300 keV for both the modulation transf…
The efficiency of a radiation detector, intended as probability of detection of an incident quantum, depends on various factors: the detected fraction of quanta ascribed to the noise-less detector, the intrinsic noise of the detector, the false events introduced by the detection process and the false events generated by the detector itself. In this paper is treated the role of the false events on the measurement of the detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of the radiation detectors, indifferently for counting detectors and imaging detectors.
Scanning electron microscopy is a powerful tool for nanoscale imaging of organic and inorganic materials. An important metric for characterizing the limits of performance of these microscopes is the Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE), which measures the fraction of emitted secondary electrons (SEs) that are detected by the SE detector. However, common techniques for measuring DQE approximate the SE emission process to be Poisson distributed, which can lead to incorrect DQE values. In this paper, we introduce a technique for measuring DQE in which we directly count the mean number of secondary …
In our article we report first quantitative measurements of imaging performance for the current generation of hybrid pixel detector, Medipix3, as direct electron detector. Utilising beam energies of 60 & 80 keV, measurements of modulation transfer function (MTF) and detective quantum efficiency (DQE) have revealed that, in single pixel mode (SPM), energy threshold values can be chosen to maximize either the MTF or DQE, obtaining values near to, or even exceeding, those for an ideal detector. We have demonstrated that the Medipix3 charge summing mode (CSM) can deliver simultaneous, near ideal v…
The aim of the present note is to derive a general formula for a detective quantum efficiency (DQE) of a neutron image plate detector which includes all essential parameters of the system. Relying on that formula, the effects of a variety of processes involved in the formation of an output signal are discussed and estimated. The theoretical value of the DQE is compared with the experimental one measured for the commercial neutron image plate BAS-IP ND 2025 (FUJIFILM).
Background: Edge-on-irradiated silicon detectors are currently being investigated for use in photon-counting CT applications. The low atomic number of silicon leads to a significant number of incident photons being Compton scattered in the detector, depositing a part of their energy and potentially being counted multiple times. Although the physics of Compton scatter is well established, the effects of Compton interactions in the detector on image quality for an edge-on-irradiated silicon detector have still not been thoroughly investigated. Purpose: To investigate and explain effects of Compt…
Hybrid pixel sensor technology such as the Medipix3 represents a unique tool for electron imaging. We have investigated its performance as a direct imaging detector using a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) which incorporated a Medipix3 detector with a 300 micrometre thick silicon layer compromising of 256x256 pixels at 55 micrometre pixel pitch. We present results taken with the Medipix3 in Single Pixel Mode (SPM) with electron beam energies in the range, 60 to 200 keV. Measurements of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) and the Detective Quantum Efficiency (DQE) were investigated. At…
In-vacuum active pixel detectors enable high sensitivity, highly parallel time- and space-resolved detection of ions from complex surfaces. For the first time, a Timepix detector assembly was combined with a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer for microscope mode SIMS imaging. Time resolved images from various benchmark samples demonstrate the imaging capabilities of the detector system. The main advantages of the active pixel detector are the higher signal-to-noise ratio and parallel acquisition of arrival time and position. Microscope mode SIMS imaging of biomolecules is demonstrated from tissue…
Imaging Hybrid Photon Detectors (HPD) have been developed for integration in large area Cherenkov detectors for high energy physics and astrophysics. The presented designs - developed particularly for the experiments MAGIC, LHCb and AQUA-RICH - comprise very good imaging properties, protection against positive ion feedback and(or) minimum dead area. The underlying innovations are discussed in some detail.

The state of the art in pixel detector technology to date are hybrid pixel detectors in which sensor and read-out integrated circuits are processed on different substrates and connected via high density interconnect structures. While these detectors are technologically mastered such that large scale particle detectors can be and are being built, the demands for improved performance for the next generation particle detectors ask…
We report the application of the resistive anode readout method on a two dimensional imaging GEM detector. The detector has been tested by using the X-ray tube (8~keV). The spatial resolution of the detector is about $103.46~\mathrm{μm}$ with the detector response part about $66.41~\mathrm{μm}$. The nonlinearity of the detector is less than $1.5\%$. A quite good two dimensional imaging capability is …
An algorithm for identifying rings in Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors is described. The algorithm is necessarily Bayesian and makes use of a Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler to locate the rings. In particular, the sampler employs a novel proposal function whose form is responsible for significant speed improvements over similar methods. The method is optimised for finding multiple overlapping rings in detectors which can be modelled well by the LHbC RICH toy model described herein.
We present the results of our recent studies on a Thick Gas Electron Multiplier (THGEM)-based imaging detector prototype. It consists of two 100x100 mm^2 THGEM electrodes in cascade, coupled to a resistive anode. The event location is recorded with a 2D double-sided readout electrode equipped with discrete delay-lines and dedicated electronics. The THGEM electrodes, produced by standard printed-circuit board and mechanical drilling techniques, a 0.4 mm thick with 0.5 mm diameter holes spaced by 1 mm. Localization resolutions of about 0.7 mm (FWHM) were measured with soft x-rays, in a detector …
A Ring Imaging Čerenkov detector built for the BRAHMS experiment at the Brookhaven RHIC is described. This detector has a high index of refraction gas radiator. Čerenkov light is focused on a photo-multiplier based photon detector with a large spherical mirror. The combination of momentum and ring radius measurement provides particle identification from 2.5 GeV/c up to 35 GeV/c for pions and kaons and well above 40 GeV/c for protons during runs that had the radiator index of refraction set at $n-1=1700 \times 10^{-6}$.
The primary secondary particles from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source are mainly gammas and neutrons, which are related to the distribution of the incident proton. The reconstruction of proton beam spot could be implemented based on the distribution of secondary particles. The methods of pinhole imaging and Compton imaging are developed by measuring the gamma distribution based on the pixelated detector. The secondary gammas could be detected by the pixelated gamma detector directly. The neutron can be identified by detecting the characteristic (478 keV) $γ$-rays fr…
The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) operates in pulsed mode and has a high neutron flux. This provides opportunities for energy resolved neutron imaging by using the TOF (Time Of Flight) approach. An Energy resolved neutron imaging instrument (ERNI) is being built at the CSNS but significant challenges for the detector persist because it simultaneously requires a spatial resolution of less than 100 μm, as well as a microsecond-scale timing resolution. This study constructs a prototype of an energy resolved neutron imaging detector based on the fast optical camera, TPX3Cam coupled with a…
There are several applications which require high position resolution UV imaging. For these applications we have developed and successfully tested a new version of a 2D UV single photon imaging detector based on a microgap RPC. The main features of such a detectors is the high position resolution - 30 micron in digital form and the high quantum efficiency (1-8% in the spectral interval of 220-140 nm). Additionally, they are spark- protected and can operate without any feedback problems at high gains, close to a streamer mode. In attempts to extend the sensitivity of RPCs to longer wavelengths …
A hard x-ray, high-speed, high dynamic range scientific x-ray imager is described. The imager is based on the mixed-mode pixel array detector (MM-PAD) readout chip coupled to a 750 micron thick cadmium telluride (CdTe) sensor. The full imager is a 2 x 3 tiled array of MM-PAD sensor/readout chip hybrids. CdTe improves detection for high energy x-rays as compared to silicon sensors, enabling efficient x-ray imaging to extend to >100 keV. The detector is capable of 1 kHz imaging and in-pixel circuitry has been designed to allow for well depths of greater than 4 x 10^{6} 80 keV x-rays. A charge in…

The prototype detector has been tested at the SAXS beamline at ELETTRA synchrotron light source with a beam energy of 8 keV to test its capabilities in the rough beamline environment. The imaging performance is examined with apertures and standard diffraction targets. Finally, the application in a time-resolved lipid tempe…
In this paper, limitations of the common method measuring intrinsic spatial resolution of the GEM imaging detector are presented. Through theoretical analysis and experimental verification, we have improved the common method to avoid these limitations. Using these improved methods, more precise measurement of intrinsic spatial resolution are obtained.
This report reviews current trends in the R&D of semiconductor pixellated sensors for vertex tracking and radiation imaging. It identifies requirements of future HEP experiments at colliders, needed technological breakthroughs and highlights the relation to radiation detection and imaging applications in other fields of science.
To detect tracks of charged particles close to the interaction point in high energy physics experiments of the next generation colliders, hybrid pixel detectors, in which sensor and read-out IC are separate entities, constitute the present state of the art in detector technology. Three of the LHC detectors as well as the BTeV detector at the Tevatron will use vertex detectors based on this technology. A development period of almost 10 years has resulted in pixel detector modules which can stand the extreme rate and timing requirements as well as the very harsh radiation environment at the LHC …
A 2D neutron detector based on 3He convertor and MWPC with an active area of 200 mm \times 200 mm has been successfully designed and fabricated. The detector has been tested with Am/Be neutron source and with collimated neutron beam with wavelength of λ = 1.37 Å. A best spatial resolution of 1.18 mm (FWHM) and good linearity were obtained. This is in good agreement with the theoretical calculations.
A ring imaging Cherenkov counter, to be read out by four 100-channel PMTs, is a key element of the BRAHMS experiment. The construction and use of a dual radiator Ring Imaging Cerenkov(RICH) detector is described. This instrument was developed for the HERMES experiment at DESY which emphasizes measurements of semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering. It provides particle identification for pions, kaons, and protons in the momentum range from 2 to 15 GeV, which is essential to these studies. The instrument uses two radiators, C4F10, a heavy fluorocarbon gas, and a wall of silica aerogel tiles. The use of aerogel in a RICH detector has only recently become possible with the development of clear, large homogeneou…
Muon Tomography based on the measurement of multiple scattering of atmospheric cosmic ray muons in matter is a promising technique for detecting heavily shielded high-Z radioactive materials (U, Pu) in cargo or vehicles. The technique uses the deflection of cosmic ray muons in matter to perform tomographic imaging of high-Z material inside a probed volume. A Muon Tomography Station (MTS) requires position-sensitive detectors with high spatial resolution for optimal tracking of incoming and outgoing cosmic ray muons. Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector (MPGD) technologies such as Gas Electron Multip…

This detector is almost 1000 times more sensitive than the best commercial flame sensor; it has 100 times better time resolution and…
A low noise and wide dynamic range event driven detector for the detection of X-Ray energy is realized using 0.2 [um] Silicon on insulator (SOI) technology. Pixel circuits are divided into two parts; signal sensing circuit and event detection circuit. Event detection circuit is activated when X-Ray energy falls into the detector. In-pixel gain selection is implemented for the detection of a small signal and wide band of energy particle. Adaptive gain and capability of correlated double sampling (CDS) technique for the kTC noise canceling of charge detector realizes the low noise and high dynam…
We discuss a novel paradigm in the optical readout of scintillation radiation detectors. In one common configuration, such detectors are homogeneous and the scintillation light is collected and recorded by external photodetectors. It is usually assumed that imaging in such a photon-starved and large-emittance regime is not possible. Here we show that the appropriate optics, matched with highly segmented photodetector coverage and dedicated reconstruction software, can be used to produce images of the radiation-induced events. In particular, such a 'distributed imaging' system can discriminate …
We evaluate 2 thermopile sensors as convenient detector options for a modern integrated THz imaging system. Both a commercial single pixel device and a 32x32 pixel FPA are utilized in a simple setup with a single optical element to achieve an outstanding resolution and SNR performance. Either a cryogenically cooled quantum cascade laser (QCL) or a room temperature electronic THz multiplier chain is used as source.
DEPFET pixel detectors are unique devices in terms of energy and spatial resolution because very low noise (ENC = 2.2e at room temperature) operation can be obtained by implementing the amplifying transistor in the pixel cell itself. Full DEPFET pixel matrices have been built and operated for autoradiographical imaging with imaging resolutions of 4.3 +- 0.8 um at 22 keV. For applications in low energy X-ray astronomy the high energy resolution of DEPFET detectors is attractive. For particle physics, DEPFET pixels are interesting as low material detectors with high spatial resolution. For a Lin…
The conceptual design and operational principle of a novel high-efficiency, fast neutron imaging detector based on THGEM, intended for future fan-beam transmission tomography applications, is described. We report on a feasibility study based on theoretical modeling and computer simulations of a possible detector configuration prototype. In particular we discuss results regarding the optimization of detector geometry, estimation of its general performance, and expected imaging quality: it has been estimated that detection efficiency of around 5-8% can be achieved for 2.5MeV neutrons; spatial re…
We have developed and tested several prototypes of GEM-like detectors with electrodes coated with resistive layers: CuO or CrO. These detectors can operate stably at gains close to 10E5 and they are very robust. We discovered that the cathodes of these detectors could be coated by CsI layers and in such a way the detectors gain high efficiency for the UV photons. We also demonstrated that such detectors can operate stably in the cascade mode and high overall gains (~10E6) are reachable. This opens applications in several areas, for example in RICH or in noble liquid TPCs. Results from the firs…
In this work we characterized a X-ray position sensitive gaseous detector based in a triple stack of gas electron multipliers (GEM). The readout circuit is divided in 256 strips for each dimension and using a resistive chain interconnecting the strips, we are able to reconstruct the radiation interaction points by resistive charge division. The detector achieved gains above $10^4$, energy resolution of 15.28% (FWHM) for 5.9keV X-rays, and position resolution of 1.2mm, while operating in Ar/CO$_2$(90/10) at atmospheric pressure.
We demonstrate the capabilities of a highly parallel, active pixel detector for large-area, mass spectrometric imaging of biological tissue sections. A bare Timepix assembly (512x512 pixels) is combined with chevron microchannel plates on an ion microscope matrix-assisted laser desorption time-of-flight mass spectrometer (MALDI TOF-MS). The detector assembly registers position- and time-resolved images of multiple m/z species in every measurement frame. We prove the applicability of the detection system to bio-molecular mass spectrometry imaging on biologically relevant samples by mass-resolve…
We are now developing new X-ray imaging system by using Silicon-On-Insulator (SOI) Pixel Detectors. The SOI detector is a monolithic radiation imaging detector based on a 0.2um FD-SOI CMOS process. Special additional process steps are also developed to create fully depleted sensing region of 50~500um thick. SOI detector has up to mega pixels, so development of high speed Data Acquisition (DAQ) system is very important in conducting experiments. We have developed readout board named SEABAS2 (Soi EvAluation BoArd with Sitcp 2) for SOI detector. The SEABAS2 board has 16 channels of 65 MSPS ADCs, …
This paper will argue for continued effort in developing imaging calorimeters for future colliders and/or upgrades to existing detectors. Imaging calorimeters offer a plethora of advantages beyond their application in conjunction with Particle Flow Algorithms. Further R&D is needed to turn the first generation prototypes into viable detectors for colliding beam experiments.
Today, most X-ray pixel detectors used at light sources transmit raw pixel data off the detector ASIC. With the availability of more advanced ASIC technology nodes for scientific application, more digital functionality from the computing domains (e.g., compression) can be integrated directly into a detector ASIC to increase data velocity. In this paper, we describe a lightweight, user-configurable detector ASIC digital architecture with on-chip compression which can be implemented in \SI{130}{\nm} technologies in a reasonable area on the ASIC periphery. In addition, we present a design to effi…
The micropattern gaseous detector Micromegas has been developed for several years in Saclay and presents good performance for neutron detection. A prototype for neutron imaging has been designed and new results obtained in thermal neutron beams are presented. Based on previous results demonstrating a good 1D spatial resolution, a tomographic image of a multiwire cable has been performed using a 1D Micromegas prototype. The number of pillars supporting the micromesh is too large and leads to local losses of efficiency that distort the tomographic reconstruction. Nevertheless, this first tomogra…
Energy-resolved neutron imaging at a pulsed source utilizes the energy-dependent neutron transmission measured via time-of-flight to extract quantitative information about the internal microstructure of an object. At the RADEN instrument at J-PARC in Japan, we use cutting-edge detectors employing micro-pattern detectors or fast Li-glass scintillators and fast, all-digital data acquisition to perform such measurements, while continuing their development toward better utilization of the intense neutron source. In particular, for the Micro-Pixel Chamber based Neutron Imaging Detector (μNID), a mi…
Multi-spectral quantitative phase imaging (QPI) is an emerging imaging modality for wavelength dependent studies of several biological and industrial specimens. Simultaneous multi-spectral QPI is generally performed with color CCD cameras. However, color CCD cameras are suffered from the color crosstalk issue, which needed to be explored. Here, we present a new approach for accurately measuring the color crosstalk of 2D area detectors, without needing prior information about camera specifications. Color crosstalk of two different cameras commonly used in QPI, single chip CCD (1-CCD) and three …
The detector for imaging of explosions (DIMEX) is in operation at the synchrotron radiation (SR) beam-line at VEPP-3 electron ring at Budker INP since 2002. DIMEX is based on one-coordinate gas ionization chamber filled with Xe-CO2(3:1) mixture at 7atm, and active Frisch-grid made of Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM). The detector has spatial resolution of ~0.2mm and dynamic range of ~100 that allows to realize the precision of signal measurement at a percent level. The frame rate can be tuned up to 8 MHz (125 ns per image) and up to 32 images can be stored in one shot. At present DIMEX is used wi…
We describe a high resolution imaging detector based on a single 80 mm micro-channel-plate (MCP) and a phosphor screen mounted on a UHV flange of only 100 mm inner diameter. It relies on standard components and we describe its performance with one or two MCPs. A resolution of 80 $μm$ rms is observed on the beam profile. % which is limited by the camera pixel size. At low count rate, individual impact can be pinpointed with few $μm$ accuracy but the resolution is probably limited by the MCP channel diameter. The detector has been used to record the diffraction of fast atoms at grazing incidence…
A mini-PET style detector system is being developed for a plant imaging application with a compact array of silicon photomultipliers (SiPM) replacing position sensitive photomultipliers (PSPMT). In addition to compactness, the use of SiPMs will allow imaging setups involving high strength MRI-type magnetic fields. The latter will allow for better position resolution of the initial positron annihilations in the plant tissue. In the present work, prototype arrays are tested for the uniformity of their response as it is known that PSPMTs require significant gain compensation on the individual cha…
Dynamic x-ray studies may reach temporal resolutions limited by only the x-ray pulse duration if the detector is fast enough to segregate synchrotron pulses. An analog integrating pixel array detector with in-pixel storage and temporal resolution of around 150 ns, sufficient to isolate pulses, is presented. Analog integration minimizes count-rate limitations and in-pixel storage captures successive pulses. Fundamental tests of noise and linearity as well as high-speed laser measurements are shown. The detector resolved individual bunch trains at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHES…
Associated Particle Imaging (API) is a nuclear technique that allows for the nondestructive determination of 3D isotopic distributions. The technique is based on the detection of the alpha particles associated with the neutron emitted in the deuterium-tritium (DT) fusion reaction, which provides information regarding the direction and time of the emitted 14 MeV neutron. Inelastic neutron scattering leads to characteristic gamma-ray emission from certain isotopes, for example C-12, that can be correlated with the neutron interaction location. An API system consisting of a sealed-type neutron ge…

Recently, the last two modules (out of seven) of the ALICE High Momentum Particle Identification detector (HMPID) were assembled and tested. The full detector, after a pre-commissioning phase, has been installed in the experimental area, inside the ALICE solenoid, at the end of September 2006. In this paper we review the status of the ALICE/HMPID project and we present a summary of the series production of the CsI photo-cathodes. We describe the key features of the production procedure which ensures high quality photo-cathodes as well as the results of the quality assessment performed by means…
A new generation of ultra-low-background scintillator-based detectors aims to study solar neutrinos and search for dark matter and new physics beyond the Standard Model. These optical, non-imaging detectors generally contain a "fiducial volume" from which data are accepted, and an "active buffer region" where there are higher levels of radioactive contaminants. Events are observed in real time. To distinguish between events occurring in the two regions, it is imperative that event position reconstruction be well-understood. The object of this paper is the study of the reconstruction, in time a…
Multichip modules (MCM) with 4 single photon counting MPEC 2.3 chips bump bonded to 1.3 cm x 1.3 cm large CdTe and Si semiconductor sensors as well as to single chip pixel detectors have been successfully built and operated. Resistive plate chambers (RPC) lined with $^{10}B_{4}$C neutron converters is a promising cost effective technology for position-sensitive thermal neutron detection capable to outperform $^{3}$He-based detectors in terms of spatial resolution and timing. However, as for the other types of gaseous detectors with a single layer of $^{10}B_{4}$C at normal beam incidence, the detection efficiency to thermal neutrons of a single-gap $^{10}B$-RPC is only about 6%. Aiming to overcome this limitation, we introduce a multi-layer $^{10}B$-RPCs detector with a stack of ten double-gap hybrid RPCs. A descr…
The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors of the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are equipped with Hybrid Photo-Detectors. These vacuum photo-detectors are affected by the stray magnetic field of the LHCb magnet, which degrades their imaging properties. This effect increases the error on the Cherenkov angle measurement and would reduce the particle identification capabilities of LHCb. A system has been developed for the RICH2 Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector to perform a detailed characterisation of the magnetic distortion effects. It is described, along with the methods impleme…
