There are several applications which require high position resolution UV imaging. For these applications we have developed and successfully tested a new version of a 2D UV single photon imaging detector based on a microgap RPC. The main features of such a detectors is the high position resolution - 30 micron in digital form and the high quantum efficiency (1-8% in the spectral interval of 220-140 nm). Additionally, they are spark- protected and can operate without any feedback problems at high gains, close to a streamer mode. In attempts to extend the sensitivity of RPCs to longer wavelengths we have successfully tested the operation of the first sealed parallel-plate gaseous detectors with CsTe photocathodes. Finally, the comparison with other types of photosensitive detectors is given and possible fields of applications are identified.
In-vacuum active pixel detectors enable high sensitivity, highly parallel time- and space-resolved detection of ions from complex surfaces. For the first time, a Timepix detector assembly was combined with a Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer for microscope mode SIMS imaging. Time resolved images from various benchmark samples demonstrate the imaging capabilities of the detector system. The main advantages of the active pixel detector are the higher signal-to-noise ratio and parallel acquisition of arrival time and position. Microscope mode SIMS imaging of biomolecules is demonstrated from tissue…

An algorithm for identifying rings in Ring Imaging Cherenkov (RICH) detectors is described. The algorithm is necessarily Bayesian and makes use of a Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain Monte Carlo sampler to locate the rings. In particular, the sampler employs a novel proposal function whose form is responsible for significant speed improvements over similar methods. The method is optimised for finding multiple overlapping rings in detectors which can be modelled well by the LHbC RICH toy model described herein.

The combination of momentum and ring radius measurement provides particle identification from 2.5 GeV/c up to 35 GeV/c for pions and kaons and well above 40 GeV/c for protons during runs that had the radiator index of refraction set at $n-1=1700 \times 10^{-6}$.
The primary secondary particles from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source are mainly gammas and neutrons, which are related to the distribution of the incident proton. The reconstruction of proton beam spot could be implemented based on the distribution of secondary particles. The methods of pinhole imaging and Compton imaging are developed by measuring the gamma distribution based on the pixelated detector. The secondary gammas could be detected by the pixelated gamma detector directly. The neutron can be identified by detecting the characteristic (478 keV) $γ$-rays fr…
The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) operates in pulsed mode and has a high neutron flux. This provides opportunities for energy resolved neutron imaging by using the TOF (Time Of Flight) approach. An Energy resolved neutron imaging instrument (ERNI) is being built at the CSNS but significant challenges for the detector persist because it simultaneously requires a spatial resolution of less than 100 μm, as well as a microsecond-scale timing resolution. This study constructs a prototype of an energy resolved neutron imaging detector based on the fast optical camera, TPX3Cam coupled with a…

Three of the LHC detectors as well as the BTeV detector at the Tevatron will use vertex detectors based on this technology. A development period of almost 10 years has resulted in pixel detector modules which can stand the extreme rate and timing requirements as well as the very harsh radiation environment at the LHC …

A ring imaging Cherenkov counter, to be read out by four 100-channel PMTs, is a key element of the BRAHMS experiment. We report here the most recent results obtained tested at the BNL AGS using several radiator gases, including the heavy fluorocarbon C4F10. Ring radii were measured for different particles (pions, muons, and electrons) for momenta ranging from 2 to 12 GeV/c employing pure C4F10 as radiator.
In this paper a general and unified treatment of the DQE is exposed, both in the space-domain and in the frequency-domain. The meaning of the DQE as quantum efficiency appears to be of paramount importance for a correct interpretation of the physical parameters involved in its formulation and measurement. The treatment in the frequency-domain turns out to be a direct extension of that in the space-domain. An operational procedure is introduced to consider the effect of the filtering of the detector in the space-domain.

It provides particle identification for pions, kaons, and protons in the momentum range from 2 to 15 GeV, which is essential to these studies. The instrument uses two radiators, C4F10, a heavy fluorocarbon gas, and a wall of silica aerogel tiles. The use of aerogel in a RICH detector has only recently become possible with the development of clear, large homogeneou…
Muon Tomography based on the measurement of multiple scattering of atmospheric cosmic ray muons in matter is a promising technique for detecting heavily shielded high-Z radioactive materials (U, Pu) in cargo or vehicles. The technique uses the deflection of cosmic ray muons in matter to perform tomographic imaging of high-Z material inside a probed volume. A Muon Tomography Station (MTS) requires position-sensitive detectors with high spatial resolution for optimal tracking of incoming and outgoing cosmic ray muons. We discuss a novel paradigm in the optical readout of scintillation radiation detectors. In one common configuration, such detectors are homogeneous and the scintillation light is collected and recorded by external photodetectors. It is usually assumed that imaging in such a photon-starved and large-emittance regime is not possible. Here we show that the appropriate optics, matched with highly segmented photodetector coverage and dedicated reconstruction software, can be used to produce images of the radiation-induced events. In particular, such a 'distributed imaging' system can discriminate …

We evaluate 2 thermopile sensors as convenient detector options for a modern integrated THz imaging system. Both a commercial single pixel device and a 32x32 pixel FPA are utilized in a simple setup with a single optical element to achieve an outstanding resolution and SNR performance. Either a cryogenically cooled quantum cascade laser (QCL) or a room temperature electronic THz multiplier chain is used as source.
DEPFET pixel detectors are unique devices in terms of energy and spatial resolution because very low noise (ENC = 2.2e at room temperature) operation can be obtained by implementing the amplifying transistor in the pixel cell itself. Full DEPFET pixel matrices have been built and operated for autoradiographical imaging with imaging resolutions of 4.3 +- 0.8 um at 22 keV. For applications in low energy X-ray astronomy the high energy resolution of DEPFET detectors is attractive. For particle physics, DEPFET pixels are interesting as low material detectors with high spatial resolution. For a Lin…

The Ring Imaging Cherenkov detectors of the LHCb experiment at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN are equipped with Hybrid Photo-Detectors. These vacuum photo-detectors are affected by the stray magnetic field of the LHCb magnet, which degrades their imaging properties. This effect increases the error on the Cherenkov angle measurement and would reduce the particle identification capabilities of LHCb. A system has been developed for the RICH2 Ring Imaging Cherenkov detector to perform a detailed characterisation of the magnetic distortion effects. It is described, along with the methods impleme…

Its choice for the BABAR detector particle identification system is motivated, followed by a discussion of the quartz radiator properties and the detector design.
In recent decades, developments in detectors for X-ray imaging have improved dose efficiency. This has been accomplished with for example, structured scintillators such as columnar CsI, or with direct detectors where the X rays are converted to electric charge carriers in a semiconductor. Scattered radiation remains a major noise source, and fairly inefficient anti-scatter grids are still a gold standard. Hence, any future development should include improved scatter rejection. In recent years, photon-counting detectors have generated significant interest by several companies as well as academi…

Adopting a pump-probe imaging strategy we have demonstrated that temporal resolutions three orders of magnitude smaller than are available for typically used TEM imaging detectors are possible. Our experiments have shown that energ…
We demonstrate and verify quantum detector tomography of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) in a multiplexing scheme which permits measurement of up to 71000 photons per input pulse. We reconstruct the positive operator valued measure (POVM) of this device in the low photon-number regime, and use the extracted parameters to show the POVMs spanning the whole dynamic range of the device. We verify this by finding the mean photon number of a bright state. Our work shows that a reliable quantum description of large-scale SNSPD devices is possible, and should be applicable to…

Single-pixel imaging is suitable for low light level scenarios because a bucket detector is employed to maximally collect the light from an object. However, one of the challenges is its slow imaging speed, mainly due to the slow light modulation technique. We here demonstrate 1.4MHz video imaging based on computational ghost imaging with a RGB LED array having a full-range frame rate up to 100MHz. With this method, the motion of a high speed propeller is observed. Moreover, by exploiting single-photon detectors to increase the detection efficiency, this method is developed for ultra-high-speed…

Electron tracking based Compton imaging is a key technique to improve the sensitivity of Compton cameras by measuring the initial direction of recoiled electrons. To realize this technique in semiconductor Compton cameras, we propose a new detector concept, Si-CMOS hybrid detector. It is a Si detector bump-bonded to a CMOS readout integrated circuit to obtain electron trajectory images. To acquire the energy and the event timing, signals from N-side are also read out in this concept. By using an ASIC for the N-side readout, the timing resolution of few us is achieved. In this paper, we present…
The optimization of resistive anode for two dimensional imaging detectors which consists of a series of high resistive square pads surrounding by low resistive strips has been studied by both numerical simulations and experimental tests. It has been found that to obtain good detector performance, the resistance ratio of the pad to the strip should be larger than 5, the nonuniformity of the pad surface resistivity had better be less than $20\%$, a smaller pad width leads to a smaller spatial resolution and when the pad width is $6mm$, the spatial resolution ($σ$) can reach about $105μm$. Based …
A detailed Monte-Carlo code has been developed from basic principles that simulates almost all of the basic photon and charged particle interactions. The code is used to derive the response functions of a high energy photon detector to incident beams of photons of various energies. The detector response matrices (DRMs) are calculated using this code. Deconvolution of an artificially generated spectrum is presented.
We derive a computationally efficient expression of the photon counting distribution for a uniformly illuminated array of single photon detectors. The expression takes the number of single detectors, their quantum efficiency, and their dark-count rate into account. Using this distribution we compute the error of the array detector by comparing the output to that of a ideal detector. We conclude from the error analysis that the quantum efficiency must be very high in order for the detector to resolve a hand-full of photons with high probability. Furthermore, we conclude that in the worst-case s…
We consider the use of single-photon counting detectors in coherence-domain imaging. Detectors operated in this mode exhibit reduced noise, which leads to increased sensitivity for weak light sources and weakly reflecting samples. In particular, we experimentally demonstrate the possibility of using superconducting single-photon detectors (SSPDs) for optical coherence-domain reflectometry (OCDR). These detectors are sensitive over the full spectral range that is useful for carrying out such imaging in biological samples. With counting rates as high as 100 MHz, SSPDs also offer a high rate of d…

For active optical imaging, the use of single-photon detectors can greatly improve the detection sensitivity of the system. However, the traditional maximum-likelihood based imaging method needs a long acquisition time to capture clear three-dimensional (3D) image in low light-level. To tackle this problem, we present a novel imaging method for depth estimate, which can obtain the accurate 3D image in a short acquisition time. Our method combines the photon-count statistics with the temporal correlations of the reflected signal. According to the characteristics of the target surface, including…
