We have analyzed and compared the performance of two novel fast-neutron imaging methods with time-of-flight spectroscopy capability. Using MCNP and GEANT code simulations of neutron and charged-particle transport in the detectors, key parameters such as detection efficiency, the amount of energy deposited in the converter and the spatial resolution of both detector variants have been evaluated.
The China Spallation Neutron Source (CSNS) operates in pulsed mode and has a high neutron flux. This provides opportunities for energy resolved neutron imaging by using the TOF (Time Of Flight) approach. An Energy resolved neutron imaging instrument (ERNI) is being built at the CSNS but significant challenges for the detector persist because it simultaneously requires a spatial resolution of less than 100 μm, as well as a microsecond-scale timing resolution. This study constructs a prototype of an energy resolved neutron imaging detector based on the fast optical camera, TPX3Cam coupled with a…
A neutron imaging detector based on neutron-sensitive microchannel plates (MCPs) was constructed and tested at beamlines of thermal and cold neutrons. The MCPs are made of a glass mixture containing B-10 and natural Gd, which makes the bulk of the MCP an efficient neutron converter. Contrary to the neutron sensitive scintillator screens normally used in neutron imaging, spatial resolution is not traded off with detection efficiency. While the best neutron imaging scintillators have a detection efficiency around a percent, a detection efficiency of around 50% for thermal neutrons and 70% for co…
An event-counting thermal neutron imaging detector based on 3 mol % natGd2O3 doped micro channel plate (MCP) has been developed and tested. Thermal neutron imaging experiment was carried out with a low flux neutron beam. Detection efficiency of 33 % was achieved with only one doped MCP. The spatial resolution of 72 μm RMS is currently limited by the readout anode. A detector with larger area and improved readout method is now being developed.
In non-destructive evaluation with X-rays light elements embedded in dense, heavy (or high-Z) matrices show little contrast and their structural details can hardly be revealed. Neutron radiography, on the other hand, provides a solution for those cases, in particular for hydrogenous materials, owing to the large neutron scattering cross section of hydrogen and uncorrelated dependency of neutron cross section on the atomic number. The majority of neutron imaging experiments at the present time is conducted with static objects mainly due to the limited flux intensity of neutron beamline faciliti…
Neutron imaging is one of the key technologies for non-destructive transmission testing. Recent progress in the development of intensive neutron sources allows us to perform energy-resolved neutron imaging with high spatial resolution. Substantial efforts have been devoted to developing a high spatial and temporal resolution neutron imager. We have been developing a neutron imager aiming at conducting high spatial and temporal resolution imaging based on a delay-line neutron detector, called the current-biased kinetic-inductance detector, with a conversion layer $^{10}$B. The detector allowed …
Energy-resolved neutron imaging at a pulsed source utilizes the energy-dependent neutron transmission measured via time-of-flight to extract quantitative information about the internal microstructure of an object. At the RADEN instrument at J-PARC in Japan, we use cutting-edge detectors employing micro-pattern detectors or fast Li-glass scintillators and fast, all-digital data acquisition to perform such measurements, while continuing their development toward better utilization of the intense neutron source. In particular, for the Micro-Pixel Chamber based Neutron Imaging Detector (μNID), a mi…
The Time-Resolved Integrative Optical Neutron (TRION) detector was developed for Fast Neutron Resonance Radiography (FNRR), a fast-neutron transmission imaging method that exploits characteristic energy-variations of the total scattering cross-section in the En = 1-10 MeV range to detect specific elements within a radiographed object. As opposed to classical event-counting time of flight (ECTOF), it integrates the detector signal during a well-defined neutron Time of Flight window corresponding to a pre-selected energy bin, e.g., the energy-interval spanning a cross-section resonance of an ele…
We report on the performance of a micro-TPC with a micro pixel chamber($μ$-PIC) readout for a time-resolved neutron position-sensitive detector(PSD). Three-dimensional tracks and the Bragg curves of protons with energies of around 1 MeV were clearly detected by the micro-TPC. More than 95% of gamma-rays of 511 keV were found to be discriminated by simple analysis. Simulation studies showed that the total track length of proton and triton emitted from the $\rm {}^{3}He$(n,p(573 keV))$\rm {}^{3}H(191 keV)$ reaction is about 1.2 cm, and that both particles have large energy losses ($\rm > 200 keV…
We have developed a neutron imaging sensor based on an INTPIX4-SOI pixelated silicon device. Neutron irradiation tests are performed at several neutron facilities to investigate sensor's responses for neutrons. Detection efficiency is measured to be around $1.5$\% for thermal neutrons. Upper bound of spatial resolution is evaluated to be $4.1 \pm 0.2 ~μ$m in terms of a standard deviation of the line spread function.
We provide the first demonstration that a neutron far-field interferometer can be employed to measure the microstructure of a sample. The interferometer is based on the moiré pattern of two phase modulating gratings which was previously realized in hard x-ray and visible light experiments. The autocorrelation length of this interferometer, and hence the microstructure length scale that is probed, is proportional to the grating spacing and the neutron wavelength, and can be varied over several orders of magnitude for one pair of gratings. We compare our measurements of the change in visibility …
The article by Fernandez et al argues that, because of advances made in laser-produced neutron pulses, it should now be possible to measure temperature in samples loaded to elevated pressures, by neutron resonance spectrometry with neutrons accelerated using a single sub-picosecond laser pulse in the 300J range. We point out that the configuration used for neutron source and detector would require an infeasibly large sample, potentially requiring tens of megajoules of laser energy to drive the sample. The laser-driven neutron technology is thus not yet mature enough to consider for new facilit…
Neutron imaging is a non-destructive inspection technique with a wide range of applications. One of the important aspects concerning neutron imaging is achieving micrometer-scale spatial resolution. Developing a neutron detector with a high resolution is a challenging task. Neutron detectors, based on fine-grained nuclear emulsion, may be suitable for high resolution neutron imaging applications. High track density is a necessary requirement to improve the quality of neutron imaging. However, the available track analysis methods are difficult to apply under high track density conditions. Simul…
Neutron detection provides an effective method to detect, locate, and characterize sources of interest to nuclear security applications. Current neutron imaging systems based on double-scatter kinematic reconstruction provide good signal vs. background discrimination and spectral capability, but suffer from poor sensitivity due to geometrical constraints. This weakness can be overcome if both neutron-proton scattering interactions are detected and resolved within one large contiguous active detector volume. We describe here a maximum likelihood approach to event reconstruction in a single-volu…
The white neutron beamline at the China Spallation Neutron Source will be used mainly for nuclear data measurements. It will be characterized by high flux and broad energy spectra. To exploit the beamline as a neutron imaging source, we propose a liquid scintillator fiber array for fast neutron resonance radiography. The fiber detector unit has a small exposed area, which will limit the event counts and separate the events in time, thus satisfying the requirements for single-event time-of-flight (SEToF) measurement. The current study addresses the physical design criteria for ToF measurement, …
An interpolating two-dimensional X-ray imaging detector based on a single photon counter with gas amplification by GEM (gas electron multiplier) structures is presented. The detector system can be used for time-resolved structure research down to the microsecond-time domain. The prototype detector has been tested at the SAXS beamline at ELETTRA synchrotron light source with a beam energy of 8 keV to test its capabilities in the rough beamline environment. The imaging performance is examined with apertures and standard diffraction targets. Finally, the application in a time-resolved lipid tempe…
We report on an Edge Illumination setup enabling neutron dark-field imaging where two amplitude modulators are used to structure and subsequently analyze the neutron beam. The modulator and analyzer are manufactured by laser ablation of readily available thin metal foils. The sample representation in terms of transmission and dark-field contrast is extracted by numerically inverting a convolution model for the intensity modulation function which had a visibility exceeding 80\%. Two test samples are presented to show how dark-field contrast can complement the more conventional neutron radiograp…
Two detection systems based on optical readout were developed: a. Integrative optical detector A 2nd generation of Time-Resolved Integrative Optical Neutron (TRION) detector was developed. It is based on an integrative optical technique, which permits fast-neutron energy-resolved imaging via time-gated optical readout. This mode of operation allows loss-free operation at very high neutron-flux intensities. The TRION neutron imaging system can be regarded as a stroboscopic photography of neutrons arriving at the detector on a few-ns time scale. As this spectroscopic capability is based on the T…
A 2D neutron detector based on 3He convertor and MWPC with an active area of 200 mm \times 200 mm has been successfully designed and fabricated. The detector has been tested with Am/Be neutron source and with collimated neutron beam with wavelength of λ = 1.37 Å. A best spatial resolution of 1.18 mm (FWHM) and good linearity were obtained. This is in good agreement with the theoretical calculations.
We have demonstrated the feasibility of performing high-frame-rate, fast neutron radiography of air-water two-phase flows in a thin channel with rectangular cross section. The experiments have been carried out at the accelerator facility of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt. A polychromatic, high-intensity fast neutron beam with average energy of 6 MeV was produced by 11.5 MeV deuterons hitting a thick Be target. Image sequences down to 10 millisecond exposure times were obtained using a fast-neutron imaging detector developed in the context of fast-neutron resonance imaging. Different…
A neutron radiography testing station has been developed exploiting the neutron beam of CERN's n\_TOF Experimental Area 2, located at the shortest distance to the neutron producing-target. The characteristics of the n\_TOF neutron beam for the imaging setup are presented in this paper, together with the obtained experimental results. The possible developments of neutron imaging capabilities of the n\_TOF facility in terms of detection-systems and beam-line upgrades are as well outlined.
Technological developments in high resolution time-of-flight neutron detectors have raised the prospect of tomographic reconstruction of elastic strain fields from Bragg-edge strain images. This approach holds the potential to provide a unique window into the full triaxial stress field within solid samples. While general tomographic reconstruction from these images has been shown to be ill-posed, an injective link between measurements and boundary deformations exists for systems subject to in situ applied loads in the absence of residual stress. Recent work has provided an algorithm to achieve…
Neutron imaging is one of the most powerful tools for nondestructive inspection owing to the unique characteristics of neutron beams, such as high permeability for many heavy metals, high sensitivity for certain light elements, and isotope selectivity owing to a specific nuclear reaction between an isotope and neutrons. In this study, we employed a superconducting detector, current-biased kinetic-inductance detector (CB-KID) for neutron imaging using a pulsed neutron source. We employed the delay-line method, and high spatial resolution imaging with only four reading channels was achieved. We …
The micropattern gaseous detector Micromegas has been developed for several years in Saclay and presents good performance for neutron detection. A prototype for neutron imaging has been designed and new results obtained in thermal neutron beams are presented. Based on previous results demonstrating a good 1D spatial resolution, a tomographic image of a multiwire cable has been performed using a 1D Micromegas prototype. The number of pillars supporting the micromesh is too large and leads to local losses of efficiency that distort the tomographic reconstruction. Nevertheless, this first tomogra…
The boron-10 based Multi-Grid detector is being developed as an alternative to helium-3 based neutron detectors. At the European Spallation Source, the detector will be used for time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy at cold to thermal neutron energies. The objective of this work is to investigate fine time- and energy-resolved effects of the Multi-Grid detector, down to a few $μ$eV, while comparing it to the performance of a typical helium-3 tube. Furthermore, it is to characterize differences between the detector technologies in terms of internal scattering, as well as the time reconstruction o…
The conceptual design and operational principle of a novel high-efficiency, fast neutron imaging detector based on THGEM, intended for future fan-beam transmission tomography applications, is described. We report on a feasibility study based on theoretical modeling and computer simulations of a possible detector configuration prototype. In particular we discuss results regarding the optimization of detector geometry, estimation of its general performance, and expected imaging quality: it has been estimated that detection efficiency of around 5-8% can be achieved for 2.5MeV neutrons; spatial re…
TRION is a sub-mm spatial resolution fast neutron imaging detector, which employs an integrative optical time-of-flight technique. The detector was developed for fast neutron resonance radiography, a method capable of detecting a broad range of conventional and improvised explosives. In this study we have analyzed in detail, using Monte-Carlo calculations and experimentally determined parameters, all the processes that influence the signal and noise in the TRION detector. In contrast to event-counting detectors where the signal-to-noise ratio is dependent only on the number of detected events …
We have developed a prototype time-resolved neutron imaging detector employing a micro-pattern gaseous detector known as the micro-pixel chamber (μPIC) coupled with a field-programmable-gate-array-based data acquisition system. Our detector system combines 100μm-level spatial and sub-μs time resolutions with a low gamma sensitivity of less than 10^-12 and high data rates, making it well suited for applications in neutron radiography at high-intensity, pulsed neutron sources. In the present paper, we introduce the detector system and present several test measurements performed at NOBORU (BL10),…
The primary secondary particles from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source are mainly gammas and neutrons, which are related to the distribution of the incident proton. The reconstruction of proton beam spot could be implemented based on the distribution of secondary particles. The methods of pinhole imaging and Compton imaging are developed by measuring the gamma distribution based on the pixelated detector. The secondary gammas could be detected by the pixelated gamma detector directly. The neutron can be identified by detecting the characteristic (478 keV) $γ$-rays fr…
In a previous work we have demonstrated the feasibility of high-frame-rate, fast-neutron radiography of generic air-water two-phase flows in a 1.5 cm thick, rectangular flow channel. The experiments have been carried out at the high-intensity, white-beam facility of the Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Germany, using an multi-frame, time-resolved detector developed for fast neutron resonance radiography. The results were however not fully optimal and therefore we have decided to modify the detector and optimize it for the given application, which is described in the present work. Further…
Gamma-ray and fast-neutron imaging was performed with a novel liquid xenon (LXe) scintillation detector read out by a Gaseous Photomultiplier (GPM). The 100 mm diameter detector prototype comprised a capillary-filled LXe converter/scintillator, coupled to a triple-THGEM imaging-GPM, with its first electrode coated by a CsI UV-photocathode, operated in Ne/5%CH4 cryogenic temperatures. Radiation localization in 2D was derived from scintillation-induced photoelectron avalanches, measured on the GPM's segmented anode. The localization properties of Co-60 gamma-rays and a mixed fast-neutron/gamma-r…
We experimentally demonstrate that electrically neutral particles, neutrons, can be used to directly visualize the electrostatic field inside a target volume that can be isolated or occupied. Electric-field images were obtained using a polychromatic, spin-polarized neutron beam with a sensitive polarimetry scheme. This work may enable new diagnostic power of the structure of electric potential, electric polarization, charge distribution, and dielectric constant by imaging spatially dependent electric fields in objects that cannot be accessed by other conventional probes.
In this paper we present a method for obtention of neutron images with Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) CMOS image sensors through the activation of indium foils. This detection method has been designed specifically for the acquisition of thermal and epitermal neutron images in mixed beams with a high gamma flux, and also for the study of high radioactive samples that are usually placed into research reactor pools. We also present a technique to obtain multi-spectral neutron images taking advantage of the high neutron absorption cross-section of this material in the thermal energy range, as wel…
Neutron imaging is an invaluable noninvasive technique for exploring new science and assisting industrial manufacture. However, state-of-the-art neutron facilities are extremely expensive and inconvenient to access, while the flux of portable neutron sources is not strong enough to form even a static image within an acceptable time frame. It is hard to obtain images with both high spatial resolution and energy resolution together. Here, based on classical amplitude modulation, we demonstrate single-pixel imaging with neutrons with specially designed masks and, further, obtain energy-selective …
Dynamic x-ray studies may reach temporal resolutions limited by only the x-ray pulse duration if the detector is fast enough to segregate synchrotron pulses. An analog integrating pixel array detector with in-pixel storage and temporal resolution of around 150 ns, sufficient to isolate pulses, is presented. Analog integration minimizes count-rate limitations and in-pixel storage captures successive pulses. Fundamental tests of noise and linearity as well as high-speed laser measurements are shown. The detector resolved individual bunch trains at the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHES…
Resistive plate chambers (RPC) lined with $^{10}B_{4}$C neutron converters is a promising cost effective technology for position-sensitive thermal neutron detection capable to outperform $^{3}$He-based detectors in terms of spatial resolution and timing. However, as for the other types of gaseous detectors with a single layer of $^{10}B_{4}$C at normal beam incidence, the detection efficiency to thermal neutrons of a single-gap $^{10}B$-RPC is only about 6%. Aiming to overcome this limitation, we introduce a multi-layer $^{10}B$-RPCs detector with a stack of ten double-gap hybrid RPCs. A descr…
Two generations of a novel detector for high-resolution transmission imaging and spectrometry of fast-neutrons are presented. These devices are based on a hydrogenous fiber scintillator screen and single- or multiple-gated intensified camera systems (ICCD). This detector is designed for energy-selective neutron radiography with nanosecond-pulsed broad-energy (1 - 10 MeV) neutron beams. Utilizing the Time-of-Flight (TOF) method, such a detector is capable of simultaneously capturing several images, each at a different neutron energy (TOF). In addition, a gamma-ray image can also be simultaneous…
We present a method for spatially resolved multiphoton counting based on an intensified camera with the retrieval of multimode photon statistics fully accounting for non-linearities in the detection process. The scheme relies on one-time quantum tomographic calibration of the detector. Faithful, high-fidelity reconstruction of single- and two-mode statistics of multiphoton states is demonstrated for coherent states and their statistical mixtures. The results consistently exhibit classical values of Mandel and Fano parameters in contrast to raw statistics of camera photo-events. Detector operat…
Fast neutron detection is often based on the neutron-proton elastic scattering reaction: the ionization caused by recoil protons in a hydrogenous material constitutes the basic information for the design and development of a class of neutron detectors. Although experimental techniques have continuously improved, proton-recoil track imaging remains still at the frontier of n-detection systems, due to the high photon sensitivity required. Several state-of-the-art approaches for neutron tracking by using n-p single and double scattering - referred to as Recoil Proton Track Imaging (RPTI) - can be…
1D or 2D neutron imaging detectors with individual wire or strip readout using discriminators have the advantage of being able to treat several neutron impacts partially overlapping in time, hence reducing global dead time. A single neutron impact usually gives rise to several discriminator signals. In this paper, we introduce an information-theoretical definition of image resolution. Two point-like spots of neutron impacts with a given distance between them act as a source of information (each neutron hit belongs to one spot or the other), and the detector plus signal treatment is regarded as…
A neutron optical transport system is proposed which comprises nested short elliptical mirrors located halfway between two common focal points M and M'. It images cold neutrons from a diverging beam or a source with finite size at M by single reflections onto a spot of similar size at M'. Direct view onto the neutron source is blocked by a central absorber with little impact on the transported solid angle. Geometric neutron losses due to source size can be kept small using modern supermirrors and distances M-M' of a few tens of metres. Very short flat mirrors can be used in practical implement…
Plastic organic scintillators have been tailored in composition to achieve ultra-fast temporal response, thereby enabling the design and development of fast neutron detection systems with high timing resolution. Eljen Technology's plastic organic scintillators -- EJ-230, EJ-232, and EJ-232Q -- are prospective candidates for use in emerging neutron imaging systems, where fast timing is paramount. To support the neutron response characterization of these materials, the relative proton light yields of EJ-230, EJ-232, and EJ-232Q were measured at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National…
We report on spin- and angular resolved photoemission spectroscopy using a high-resolution imaging spin filter based on a large Ir(001) crystal enhancing the effective figure of merit for spin detection by a factor of over $10^3$ compared to standard single channel detectors. Furthermore, we review the spin filter preparation, and its lifetime. The spin filter efficiency is mapped on a broad range of scattering energies and azimuthal angles. Large spin filter efficiencies are observed for the spin component perpendicular as well as parallel to the scattering plane depending on the azimuthal or…
We have developed a prototype time-resolved neutron imaging detector employing the micro-pixel chamber (muPIC), a micro-pattern gaseous detector, coupled with a field programmable gate array-based data acquisition system for applications in neutron radiography at high-intensity neutron sources. The prototype system, with an active area of 10cm x 10cm and operated at a gas pressure of 2 atm, measures both the energy deposition (via time-over-threshold) and 3-dimensional track of each neutron-induced event, allowing the reconstruction of the neutron interaction point with improved accuracy. Usin…
We present a detailed study of the spatial resolution of our time-resolved neutron imaging detector utilizing a new neutron position reconstruction method that improves both spatial resolution and event reconstruction efficiency. Our prototype detector system, employing a micro-pattern gaseous detector known as the micro-pixel chamber (μPIC) coupled with a field-programmable-gate-array-based data acquisition system, combines 100μm-level spatial and sub-μs time resolutions with excellent gamma rejection and high data rates, making it well suited for applications in neutron radiography at high-i…
The detection of individual photons is an inherently binary mechanism, revealing either their absence or presence while concealing their spectral information. For multi-color imaging techniques, such as single photon spectroscopy, fluorescence resonance energy transfer microscopy and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, wavelength discrimination is essential and mandates spectral separation prior to detection. Here, we adopt an approach borrowed from quantum photonic integration to realize a compact and scalable waveguide-integrated single-photon spectrometer capable of parallel detection on…
In this work we explore for the first time the applicability of using $γ$-ray imaging in neutron capture measurements to identify and suppress spatially localized background. For this aim, a pinhole gamma camera is assembled, tested and characterized in terms of energy and spatial performance. It consists of a monolithic CeBr$_3$ scintillating crystal coupled to a position-sensitive photomultiplier and readout through an integrated circuit AMIC2GR. The pinhole collimator is a massive carven block of lead. A series of dedicated measurements with calibrated sources and with a neutron beam incide…
Detector developments are currently enabling new capabilities in the field of transmission electron microscopy (TEM). We have investigated the limits of a hybrid pixel detector, Medipix3, to record dynamic, time varying, electron signals. Operating with an energy of 60keV, we have utilised electrostatic deflection to oscillate electron beam position on the detector. Adopting a pump-probe imaging strategy we have demonstrated that temporal resolutions three orders of magnitude smaller than are available for typically used TEM imaging detectors are possible. Our experiments have shown that energ…
The use of transparent test/source masses can benefit future measurements of Newton's gravitational constant $G$. Such transparent test mass materials can enable nondestructive, quantitative internal density gradient measurements using optical interferometry and allow in-situ optical metrology methods to be realized for the critical distance measurements often needed in a $G$ apparatus. To confirm the sensitivity of such optical interferometry measurements to internal density gradients it is desirable to conduct a check with a totally independent technique. We present an upper bound on possibl…
We report on the design, production, and performance of compact 40-cm$^3$ Time Projection Chambers (TPCs) that detect fast neutrons by measuring the three-dimensional (3D) ionization distribution of nuclear recoils in $^4$He:CO$_2$ gas at atmospheric pressure. We use these detectors to characterize the fast-neutron flux inside the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider in Tsukuba, Japan, where the primary design constraint is a small form factor. We find that the TPCs meet or exceed all design specifications, and are capable of measuring the 3D surface shape and charge d…
We previously proposed a method to detect neutrons by using a current-biased kinetic inductance detector (CB-KID), where neutrons are converted into charged particles using a 10B conversion layer. The charged particles are detected based on local changes in kinetic inductance of X and Y superconducting meanderlines under a modest DC bias current. The system uses a delay-line method to locate the positions of neutron-10B reactions by acquiring the four arrival timestamps of signals that propagate from hot spots created by a passing charged particle to the end electrodes of the meanderlines. Unl…
