Neutron imaging is an invaluable noninvasive technique for exploring new science and assisting industrial manufacture. However, state-of-the-art neutron facilities are extremely expensive and inconvenient to access, while the flux of portable neutron sources is not strong enough to form even a static image within an acceptable time frame. It is hard to obtain images with both high spatial resolution and energy resolution together. Here, based on classical amplitude modulation, we demonstrate single-pixel imaging with neutrons with specially designed masks and, further, obtain energy-selective images with a spallation neutron source. Images of real complex objects with 100 μm spatial resolution and 10 μs time resolution (corresponding to 0.4% at 1 Å) have been obtained using a 3He single-pixel detector. Even when the neutron counts in the detector plane were lowered to 1000 per modulation pattern on average, a clear image was still obtained. The experimental setup is simple, inexpensive and easy to operate, thus our scheme points to a new path for neutron imaging, especially for portable radioactive neutron sources of low intensity, which should be of great benefit for diagnostic analysis in biology, materials science, and industrial processes.
A pixel detector with high spatial resolution and temporal information for ultra-cold neutrons is developed based on a commercial CCD on which a neutron converter is attached. 10B and 6Li are tested for the neutron converter and 10B is found to be more suitable based on efficiency and spatial resolution. The pixel detector has an efficiency of 44.1 +- 1.1% and a spatial resolution of 2.9 +- 0.1 um (1 sigma).
An experimental setup is proposed for the precise measurement of the quantum states of ultracold neutrons bound in the earth's gravitational field. The experiment utilizes a CCD-based pixel sensor and magnification system to observe the fine structure of the neutron distribution. In this work, we analyzed the sensor's deposited energy measurement capability and found that its spatial resolution was 5.3 um. A magnifying power of two orders of magnitude was realized by using a cylindrical rod as a convex mirror.
We have developed a neutron imaging sensor based on an INTPIX4-SOI pixelated silicon device. Neutron irradiation tests are performed at several neutron facilities to investigate sensor's responses for neutrons. Detection efficiency is measured to be around $1.5$\% for thermal neutrons. Upper bound of spatial resolution is evaluated to be $4.1 \pm 0.2 ~μ$m in terms of a standard deviation of the line spread function.
Single-pixel imaging is suitable for low light level scenarios because a bucket detector is employed to maximally collect the light from an object. However, one of the challenges is its slow imaging speed, mainly due to the slow light modulation technique. We here demonstrate 1.4MHz video imaging based on computational ghost imaging with a RGB LED array having a full-range frame rate up to 100MHz. With this method, the motion of a high speed propeller is observed. Moreover, by exploiting single-photon detectors to increase the detection efficiency, this method is developed for ultra-high-speed…
In this contribution, we explore the imaging limits of terahertz single-pixel cameras and present a way to improve the achievable signal-to-noise ratio and spatial resolution using a technique called dithering masks. The proposed procedure is implemented on the hardware level using recent advances in the development of spatial light modulators for terahertz single-pixel cameras. Thereby, our approach offers new ways to overcome theoretical imaging limits of near wavelength resolution. We suggest that in using dithering masks the required phase retrieval driven recovery can be simplified to a r…
The primary secondary particles from the spallation target of the China Spallation Neutron Source are mainly gammas and neutrons, which are related to the distribution of the incident proton. The reconstruction of proton beam spot could be implemented based on the distribution of secondary particles. The methods of pinhole imaging and Compton imaging are developed by measuring the gamma distribution based on the pixelated detector. The secondary gammas could be detected by the pixelated gamma detector directly. The neutron can be identified by detecting the characteristic (478 keV) $γ$-rays fr…

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-efficiency single-pixel imaging (SPI) scheme by integrating time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC) with time-division multiplexing to acquire full-color images at extremely low light level. This SPI scheme uses a digital micromirror device to modulate a sequence of laser pulses with preset delays to achieve three-color structured illumination, then employs a photomultiplier tube into the TCSPC module to achieve photon-counting detection. By exploiting the time-resolved capabilities of TCSPC, we demodulate the spectrum-image-encoded signa…
One of the most active research fields in single-pixel imaging is the influence of the sampling basis and its order in the quality of the reconstructed images. This paper presents two new orders, ascending scale (AS) and ascending inertia (AI), of the Hadamard basis and test their performance, using simulation and experimental methods, for low sampling ratios (0.5 to 0.01). These orders were compared with two state-of-the-art orders, cake-cutting (CC) and total gradient (TG), using TVAL3 as the reconstruction algorithm and three noise levels. These newly proposed orders have better reconstruct…

Six of these new pixel designs are arranged in structures of ten columns and were placed beside structures with the standard design on one sensor. Because of a special guard ring desig…
DEPFET pixel detectors are unique devices in terms of energy and spatial resolution because very low noise (ENC = 2.2e at room temperature) operation can be obtained by implementing the amplifying transistor in the pixel cell itself. Full DEPFET pixel matrices have been built and operated for autoradiographical imaging with imaging resolutions of 4.3 +- 0.8 um at 22 keV. For applications in low energy X-ray astronomy the high energy resolution of DEPFET detectors is attractive. For particle physics, DEPFET pixels are interesting as low material detectors with high spatial resolution. For a Lin…
Based on image encoding in a serial-temporal format, optical time-stretch imaging entails a stringent requirement of state-of-the- art fast data acquisition unit in order to preserve high image resolution at an ultrahigh frame rate --- hampering the widespread utilities of such technology. Here, we propose a pixel super-resolution (pixel-SR) technique tailored for time-stretch imaging that preserves pixel resolution at a relaxed sampling rate. It harnesses the subpixel shifts between image frames inherently introduced by asynchronous digital sampling of the continuous time-stretch imaging proc…
CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) were chosen as sensor technology for the vertex detectors of STAR, CBM and the upgraded ALICE-ITS. They also constitute a valuable option for tracking devices at future e+e- colliders. Those applications require a substantial tolerance to both, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. To allow for a focused optimization of the radiation tolerance, prototypes are tested by irradiating the devices either with purely ionizing radiation (e.g. soft X-rays) or the most pure sources of non-ionizing radiation available (e.g. reactor neutrons). In the second case…

They have been developed and start to be used as tracking detectors and also imaging devices in radiography, autoradiography, protein crystallography and in X-ray astronomy. A number of trends and possibilities for future applications in these fields with improved performance, less material, high read-out speed, large radiation tolerance, and potential off-the-shelf availability have appeared and are momentarily matur…
A neutron imaging detector based on neutron-sensitive microchannel plates (MCPs) was constructed and tested at beamlines of thermal and cold neutrons. The MCPs are made of a glass mixture containing B-10 and natural Gd, which makes the bulk of the MCP an efficient neutron converter. Contrary to the neutron sensitive scintillator screens normally used in neutron imaging, spatial resolution is not traded off with detection efficiency. While the best neutron imaging scintillators have a detection efficiency around a percent, a detection efficiency of around 50% for thermal neutrons and 70% for co…
A hard x-ray, high-speed, high dynamic range scientific x-ray imager is described. The imager is based on the mixed-mode pixel array detector (MM-PAD) readout chip coupled to a 750 micron thick cadmium telluride (CdTe) sensor. The full imager is a 2 x 3 tiled array of MM-PAD sensor/readout chip hybrids. CdTe improves detection for high energy x-rays as compared to silicon sensors, enabling efficient x-ray imaging to extend to >100 keV. The detector is capable of 1 kHz imaging and in-pixel circuitry has been designed to allow for well depths of greater than 4 x 10^{6} 80 keV x-rays. A charge in…
An innovative X-ray imaging sensor with intrinsic digital characteristics is presented. It is based on Chromatic Photon Counting technology. The detector is able to count individually the incident X-ray photons and to separate them according to their energy (two 'color' images per exposure). The energy selection occurs in real time and at radiographic imaging speed (GHz global counting rate). Photon counting, color mode and a very high spatial resolution (more than 10 l.p./mm at MTF50) allow to obtain an optimal ratio between image quality and absorbed dose. The individual block of the imaging…

We review experimental results obtained in previous years, and report on ongoing simulation studies and construction of the first prototype at the University of Hawaii. We also present prospects of using such…
We have developed a prototype time-resolved neutron imaging detector employing a micro-pattern gaseous detector known as the micro-pixel chamber (μPIC) coupled with a field-programmable-gate-array-based data acquisition system. Our detector system combines 100μm-level spatial and sub-μs time resolutions with a low gamma sensitivity of less than 10^-12 and high data rates, making it well suited for applications in neutron radiography at high-intensity, pulsed neutron sources. In the present paper, we introduce the detector system and present several test measurements performed at NOBORU (BL10),…
We experimentally demonstrate that electrically neutral particles, neutrons, can be used to directly visualize the electrostatic field inside a target volume that can be isolated or occupied. Electric-field images were obtained using a polychromatic, spin-polarized neutron beam with a sensitive polarimetry scheme. This work may enable new diagnostic power of the structure of electric potential, electric polarization, charge distribution, and dielectric constant by imaging spatially dependent electric fields in objects that cannot be accessed by other conventional probes.
Using industrial standard 0.35μm CMOS Integrated Circuit process, we realized a highly pixelated sensor that directly collects charge via metal nodes placed on the top of each pixel and forms two dimensional images of charge cloud distribution. The first version, Topmetal-I, features a 64x64 pixel array of 80μm pitch size. Direct charge calibration reveals an average capacitance of 210fF per pixel. The charge collection noise is near the thermal noise limit. With the readout, individual pixel channels exhibit a most probable equivalent noise charge of 330e-.
An event-counting thermal neutron imaging detector based on 3 mol % natGd2O3 doped micro channel plate (MCP) has been developed and tested. Analog integration minimizes count-rate limitations and in-pixel storage captures successive pulses. Fundamental tests of noise and linearity as well as high-speed laser measurements are shown. We discuss the reconstruction problem from a computational imaging perspective and provide a comparison of the effects of several state-of-the art regularization techniques. Moreover, we focus on some advanced aspects arising in practice with THz cameras, which lead to nonlinear reconstruction problems: the calibration of the beam reminiscent of the Retinex problem in imaging and phase recovery problems. Finally we provide an outlook …

CMOS Monolithic Active Pixel Sensors (MAPS) are considered as an emerging technology in the field of charged particle tracking. They will be used in the vertex detectors of experiments like STAR, CBM and ALICE and are considered for the ILC and the tracker of ATLAS. In those applications, the sensors are exposed to sizeable radiation doses. While the tolerance of MAPS to ionizing radiation and fast hadrons is well known, the damage caused by low energy neutrons was not studied so far. Those slow neutrons may initiate nuclear fission of $^{10}$B dopants found in the B-doped silicon active mediu…

We have been developing monolithic active pixel sensors, named ``XRPIX'', based on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) pixel technology for future X-ray astronomy satellites. XRPIX has the function of event trigger and hit address outputs. This function allows us to read out analog signals only of hit pixels on trigger timing, which is referred to as the event-driven readout mode. Recently, we processed ``XRPIX5b'' with the largest imaging area of 21.9~mm $\times$ 13.8~mm in the XRPIX series. X-ray spectra are successfully obtained from all the pixels, and the readout noise is 46~e$^-$~(rms) in the…

It is based on an integrative optical technique, which permits fast-neutron energy-resolved imaging via time-gated optical readout. This mode of operation allows loss-free operation at very high neutron-flux intensities. The TRION neutron imaging system can be regarded as a stroboscopic photography of neutrons arriving at the detector on a few-ns time scale. As this spectroscopic capability is based on the T…
We have studied the effects of ionizing irradiation from a 60Co source and the effects of neutron irradiation on a Monolithic Active Pixel Sensor Chip(MIMOSA8). A previous report was devoted solely to the neutron-induced effects. We show that extended defects due to the neutron damage changes the distribution of the pixels pedestals. This is mainly due to the increase of the dark generation current due to the presence of deep traps in the depleted zones of the sensors. Alternatively, the exposure to ionizing irradiation increases the pedestals in a more homogeneous way, this coming from the ge…

The characteristics of the n\_TOF neutron beam for the imaging setup are presented in this paper, together with the obtained experimental results. The possible developments of neutron imaging capabilities of the n\_TOF facility in terms of detection-systems and beam-line upgrades are as well outlined.

Neutron detection provides an effective method to detect, locate, and characterize sources of interest to nuclear security applications. Current neutron imaging systems based on double-scatter kinematic reconstruction provide good signal vs. background discrimination and spectral capability, but suffer from poor sensitivity due to geometrical constraints. This weakness can be overcome if both neutron-proton scattering interactions are detected and resolved within one large contiguous active detector volume. We describe here a maximum likelihood approach to event reconstruction in a single-volu…
