A new generation of ultra-low-background scintillator-based detectors aims to study solar neutrinos and search for dark matter and new physics beyond the Standard Model. These optical, non-imaging detectors generally contain a "fiducial volume" from which data are accepted, and an "active buffer region" where there are higher levels of radioactive contaminants. Events are observed in real time. To distinguish between events occurring in the two regions, it is imperative that event position reconstruction be well-understood. The object of this paper is the study of the reconstruction, in time and space, of scintillation events in detectors of large dimensions. A general, likelihood-based method of position reconstruction for this class of detectors is presented. The potential spatial resolution of the method is then evaluated. It is shown that for a spherical detector with a large number N of photosensitive elements that detect photons, the expected spatial resolution at the center of the detector is given by delta a ~ (c sigma / n) sqrt(3/N), where sigma is the width of the scintillator time response function and n is the index of refraction in the medium. However, if light in the detector has a scattering mean free path much less than the detector radius R, the resolution instead becomes (R/2) sqrt(3/N). Finally, a formalism is introduced to deal with the common case in which only the arrival time of the first photon to arrive at each photosensitive element can be measured.
Imaging hadronic calorimeters with scintillator readout use small scintillator tiles individually read out by silicon photomultipliers to achieve the necessary granularity needed for sophisticated reconstruction algorithms at future collider detectors. For a second generation prototype of the CALICE analog HCAL new, 3 mm thick scintillator tiles with an embedded wavelength shifting fiber and new photon sensor from CPTA are being fabricated. The availability of blue-sensitive SiPMs also allows fiberless coupling of the photon sensor to the tile, a technique requiring modified geometries to achi…
We present a novel geometry of scintillator tiles developed for fiberless coupling to silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) for applications in highly granular calorimeters. A high degree of uniformity of the tile response over the full active area was achieved by a drilled slit at the coupling position of the photon sensor with 2 mm, 4 mm and 5.5 mm in height, width and depth. Detailed measurements of the response to penetrating electrons were performed for tiles with a lateral size of 3 x 3 cm^2 and thicknesses of 5 mm and 3 mm.

Plastic organic scintillators have been tailored in composition to achieve ultra-fast temporal response, thereby enabling the design and development of fast neutron detection systems with high timing resolution. Eljen Technology's plastic organic scintillators -- EJ-230, EJ-232, and EJ-232Q -- are prospective candidates for use in emerging neutron imaging systems, where fast timing is paramount. To support the neutron response characterization of these materials, the relative proton light yields of EJ-230, EJ-232, and EJ-232Q were measured at the 88-Inch Cyclotron at Lawrence Berkeley National…
The recent availability of blue sensitive silicon photomultipliers allows the direct readout of blue emitting plastic scintillator tiles without the use of a wavelength shifting fiber. Such directly read out tiles, without light guides, are attractive for the use in highly granular calorimeters that use large numbers of individual cells and in other applications where very compact designs are needed. However, the total signal amplitude and the uniformity of the response can be problematic in such cases. We have developed a scanning setup to investigate the response of scintillator tiles with S…
The result of studies of the energy and spatial resolution of a large volume liquid scintillator detector are presented. The relations are obtained, which allows an estimation of the detector's energy and spatial resolutions without modeling. The relations are verified with the data obtained with the CTF detector, which is the prototype of the new detector for solar neutrinos, called Borexino. An event reconstruction technique using charge and time data from the PMTs is analyzed using the obtained relations in order to improve the detector resolution. Algorithms for the energy and coordinates …
High precision vertex and energy reconstruction is crucial for large liquid scintillator detectors such as JUNO, especially for the determination of the neutrino mass ordering by analyzing the energy spectrum of reactor neutrinos. This paper presents a data-driven method to obtain more realistic and more accurate expected PMT response of positron events in JUNO, and develops a simultaneous vertex and energy reconstruction method that combines the charge and time information of PMTs. For the JUNO detector, the impact of vertex inaccuracy on the energy resolution is about 0.6\%.
Localised response of a sensitive light detector, such as Hamamatsu H9500 multi anode photomultiplier tube (MAPMT), is of vital importance for coded-aperture imaging systems. When coupled with a suitable sensitive detector (e.g. EJ-299-34 plastic scintillator), output signals of the MAPMT can be retrieved to infer the interaction location in the pixelated scintillator. Given the number of anodes in H9500 (256), significant processing power would be necessary to handle each pulse individually. Therefore, a readout electronics system was developed, based on resistive network approach, which redu…
Precise vertex reconstruction is essential for large liquid scintillator detectors. A novel method based on machine learning has been successfully developed to reconstruct the event vertex in JUNO previously. In this paper, the performance of machine learning based vertex reconstruction is further improved by optimizing the input images of the neural networks. By separating the information of different types of PMTs as well as adding the information of the second hit of PMTs, the vertex resolution is improved by about 9.4 % at 1 MeV and 9.8 % at 11 MeV, respectively.
The outer water buffer is an economic option to shield the external radiative backgrounds for liquid-scintillator neutrino detectors. However, the consequential total reflection of scintillation light at the media boundary introduces extra complexity to the detector optics. This paper develops a precise detector-response model by investigating how total reflection complicates photon propagation and degrades reconstruction. We first parameterize the detector response by regression, providing an unbiased energy and vertex reconstruction in the total reflection region while keeping the number of …
Large-volume liquid scintillator detectors with ultra-low background levels have been widely used to study neutrino physics and search for dark matter. Event vertex and event time are not only useful for event selection but also essential for the reconstruction of event energy. In this study, four event vertex and event time reconstruction algorithms using charge and time information collected by photomultiplier tubes were analyzed comprehensively. The effects of photomultiplier tube properties were also investigated. The results indicate that the transit time spread is the main effect degradi…
Compact neutron imagers using double-scatter kinematic reconstruction are being designed for localization and characterization of special nuclear material. These neutron imaging systems rely on scintillators with a rapid prompt temporal response as the detection medium. As n-p elastic scattering is the primary mechanism for light generation by fast neutron interactions in organic scintillators, proton light yield data are needed for accurate assessment of scintillator performance. The proton light yield of a series of commercial fast plastic organic scintillators---EJ-200, EJ-204, and EJ-208--…
Liquid scintillators are commonly used to detect low energy neutrinos from the reactors, sun, and earth. It is a challenge to reconstruct deposited energies for a large liquid scintillator detector. For detectors with multiple optical mediums such as JUNO and SNO+, the prediction of the propagation of detected photons is extremely difficult due to mixed optical processes such as Rayleigh scattering, refraction and total reflection at their boundaries. Calibration based reconstruction methods consume impractical time since a large number of calibration points are required in a giant detector. I…
Unsegmented, large-volume liquid scintillator (LS) neutrino detectors have proven to be a key technology for low-energy neutrino physics. The efficient rejection of radionuclide background induced by cosmic muon interactions is of paramount importance for their success in high-precision MeV neutrino measurements. We present a novel technique to reconstruct GeV particle tracks in LS, whose main property, the resolution of topological features and changes in the differential energy loss $\mathrm{d}E/\mathrm{d}x$, allows for improved rejection strategies. Different to common track reconstruction …
Compressive Sensing theory says that it is possible to reconstruct a measured signal if an enough sparse representation of this signal exists in comparison to the number of random measurements. This theory was applied to reconstruct signals from measurements of plastic scintillators. Sparse representation of obtained signals was found using SVD transform.
Conventional energy-integration black-white X-ray imaging lacks spectral information of X-ray photons. Although X-ray spectra (energy) can be distinguished by photon-counting technique typically with CdZnTe detectors, it is very challenging to be applied to large-area flat-panel X-ray imaging (FPXI). Herein, we design multi-layer stacked scintillators of different X-ray absorption capabilities and scintillation spectrums, in this scenario, the X-ray energy can be discriminated by detecting the emission spectra of each scintillator, therefore the multispectral X-ray imaging can be easily obtain…
A new imaging technique for $α$-particles using a fast optical camera focused on a thin scintillator is presented. As $α$-particles interact in a thin layer of LYSO fast scintillator, they produce a localized flash of light. The light is collected with a lens to an intensified optical camera, Tpx3Cam, with single photon sensitivity and excellent spatial & temporal resolutions. The interactions of photons with the camera is reconstructed by means of a custom algorithm, capable of discriminating single photons using time and spatial information.

The foreseen enhancement of the surface instrumentation will consist of plastic scintillator panels read out by silicon photomultipliers. This additional detector component will calibrate the effect of snow accumulation on the IceTop tanks, improve the measurement of cosmic rays, and enhance the atmospheric background rejection for the high-energy astrophysical neutrino detection. Two scintillator prototype stations were deployed at…

Muon tomography (MT), based on atmospheric cosmic rays, is a promising technique suitable for nondestructive imaging of the internal structures of mountains. This method uses the measured flux distribution after attenuation, combined with the known muon angular and energy distributions and a 3D satellite map, to perform tomographic imaging of the density distribution inside a probed volume. A muon tomography station (MTS) requires direction-sensitive detectors with a high resolution for optimal tracking of incident cosmic-ray muons. The spherical liquid scintillator detector is one of the best…
Currently inorganic scintillator detectors are used in all commercial Time of Flight Positron Emission Tomograph (TOF-PET) devices. The J-PET collaboration investigates a possibility of construction of a PET scanner from plastic scintillators which would allow for single bed imaging of the whole human body. This paper describes a novel method of hit-position reconstruction based on sampled signals and an example of an application of the method for a single module with a 30 cm long plastic strip, read out on both ends by Hamamatsu R4998 photomultipliers. The sampling scheme to generate a vector…
For reconstruction of the spatial structure of many-component objects, it is proposed to use multi-radiography with detection of X-ray by combined detector arrays using detectors of ``scintillator-photodiode'' type. A theoretical model has been developed of multi-energy radiography for thickness measurements of multi-layered systems and systems with defects. Experimental studies of the sensitivity, output signal of various inspection systems based on scintillators $ZnSe(Te)$ and $CsI(Tl)$, and object image reconstruction (with organics and non-ogranics materials singled out) have been carried …
We have developed a compact Compton gamma-ray imager with a large field of view and a low channel-count that is capable of quickly localizing gamma-ray sources in the few hundred keV - several MeV range. The two detector planes (scatter and absorber) employ bars of NaI(Tl) read out by photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) located at each end. The long-range imaging performance has been tested from 392 keV to 1274 keV. An angular resolution measure of 2.72 +/- 0.06 degrees and an efficiency of (1.79 +/- 0.04) x 10^(-3) at 662 keV is obtained. A Cs-137 (662 keV) source equivalent to a 10 mCi source 40 m …
Plastic scintillator detectors are used in high energy physics as well as for diagnostic imaging in medicine, beam monitoring on hadron therapy, muon tomography, dosimetry and many security applications. To combine particle tracking and calorimetry it is necessary to build detectors with three-dimensional granularity, i.e. small voxels of scintillator optically isolated from each other. Recently, the 3DET collaboration demonstrated the possibility to 3D print polystyrene-based scintillators with a light output performance close to that obtained with standard production methods. In this article…
We present a new conceptual radiation detector, the Architected Multimaterial Scintillator System, that utilizes a scintillator composed of multiple materials arranged in architected structures to enable new capabilities. By structuring differently-dyed materials, the wavelength of the scintillation light encodes additional information in radiation measurements. These structures can be realized through additive manufacture (3D-printing). Two classes of this concept are described and modelled using Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate their performance. The first detector design uses dye microst…
The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) is designed to study neutrino mass hierarchy and measure three of the neutrino oscillation parameters with high precision using reactor antineutrinos. It is also able to study many other physical phenomena, including supernova neutrinos, solar neutrinos, geo-neutrinos, atmosphere neutrinos, and so forth. The central detector of JUNO contains 20,000~tons of liquid scintillator (LS) and about 18,000 20-inch photomultiplier tubes (PMTs), which is the largest liquid scintillator one under construction in the world up today. The energy resolution…
In this article, a new method for the reconstruction of hit-position and hit-time of photons in long scintillator detectors is investigated. This research is motivated by the recent development of the positron emission tomography scanners based on plastic scintillators. The proposed method constitutes a new way of signal processing in Multi-Voltage-Technique. It is based on the determination of the degree of similarity between the registered signals and the synchronized model signals stored in a library. The library was established for a set of well defined hit-positions along the length of th…
The advent of silicon photomultipliers has enabled big advances in high energy physics instrumentation, for example by allowing the construction of extremely granular hadronic calorimeters with photon sensors integrated into small scintillator tiles. Direct coupling of the SiPM to the plastic scintillator, without use of wavelength shifting fibers, provides a fast detector response, making such devices well suited for precise timing measurements. We have constructed a setup consisting of 15 such scintillator tiles read out with fast digitizers with deep buffers to measure the time structure of…

A neutron imaging detector based on neutron-sensitive microchannel plates (MCPs) was constructed and tested at beamlines of thermal and cold neutrons. The MCPs are made of a glass mixture containing B-10 and natural Gd, which makes the bulk of the MCP an efficient neutron converter. Contrary to the neutron sensitive scintillator screens normally used in neutron imaging, spatial resolution is not traded off with detection efficiency. While the best neutron imaging scintillators have a detection efficiency around a percent, a detection efficiency of around 50% for thermal neutrons and 70% for co…

Large-scale detectors consisting of a liquid scintillator target surrounded by an array of photo-multiplier tubes (PMTs) are widely used in the modern neutrino experiments: Borexino, KamLAND, Daya Bay, Double Chooz, RENO, and the upcoming JUNO with its satellite detector TAO. Such apparatuses are able to measure neutrino energy which can be derived from the amount of light and its spatial and temporal distribution over PMT channels. However, achieving a fine energy resolution in large-scale detectors is challenging. In this work, we present machine learning methods for energy reconstruction in…
Deep learning tools are being used extensively in high energy physics and are becoming central in the reconstruction of neutrino interactions in particle detectors. In this work, we report on the performance of a graph neural network in assisting with particle flow event reconstruction. The three-dimensional reconstruction of particle tracks produced in neutrino interactions can be subject to ambiguities due to high multiplicity signatures in the detector or leakage of signal between neighboring active detector volumes. Graph neural networks potentially have the capability of identifying all t…
Linear alkyl benzene (LAB) has in recent years been used as a solvent for PPO in large-scale scintillation detectors, like Daya Bay and SNO+. The combination has several nice properties, including high light yield, good materials compatibility, and excellent pulse shape discrimination. As charged particles move through the LAB+PPO, both Cherenkov and scintillation light are created. Separating Cherenkov from scintillation light would allow a broad range of physics in future large-scale detectors like THEIA, by allowing direction reconstruction with Cherenkov light while retaining the high ligh…
The reconstruction of particle trajectories makes it possible to distinguish between different types of charged particles. In high-energy physics, where trajectories are rather long, large size trackers must be used to achieve sufficient position resolution. However, in low-background experiments tracks are rather short and three dimensional trajectories could only be resolved in time-projection chambers so far. For detectors of large volume and therefore large drift distances, which are inevitable for low-background experiments, this technique is limited by diffusion of charge carriers. In th…
Electron antineutrinos are detected in organic liquid scintillator based neutrino experiments by means of the inverse beta decay, producing both a positron and a neutron. The positron may form a bound state together with an electron, called positronium (Ps). The longer-lived spin state of Ps, orthopositronium (o-Ps) has a lifetime of about $3\,\mathrm{ns}$ in organic liquid scintillators (LS). Its formation changes the time distribution of photon emission, which affects positron reconstruction algorithms and allows the application of pulse shape discrimination (PSD) to distinguish electron fro…
Many scintillator based detectors employ a set of photomultiplier tubes (PMT) to observe the scintillation light from potential signal and background events. It is important to be able to count the number of photoelectrons (PE) in the pulses observed in the PMTs, because the position and energy reconstruction of the events is directly related to how well the spatial distribution of the PEs in the PMTs as well as their total number might be measured. This task is challenging for fast scintillators, since the PEs often overlap each other in time. Standard Bayesian statistics methods are often us…
For calorimeter applications requiring precise time stamping, the time structure of hadronic showers in the detector is a crucial issue. This applies in particular to detector concepts for CLIC, where a hadronic calorimeter with tungsten absorbers is being considered to achieve a high level of shower containment while satisfying strict space constraints. The high hadronic background from gamma gamma to hadrons processes at 3 TeV in combination with the 2 GHz bunch crossing frequency at CLIC requires good time stamping in the detectors. To provide first measurements of the time structure in a h…
