We present a new conceptual radiation detector, the Architected Multimaterial Scintillator System, that utilizes a scintillator composed of multiple materials arranged in architected structures to enable new capabilities. By structuring differently-dyed materials, the wavelength of the scintillation light encodes additional information in radiation measurements. These structures can be realized through additive manufacture (3D-printing). Two classes of this concept are described and modelled using Monte Carlo simulations to evaluate their performance. The first detector design uses dye microstructures to encode particle tracking information, allowing for directional neutron detection and gamma/neutron discrimination. The second design uses a dye gradient to indicate the position of radiation along the gradient. The simulation results indicate this new concept in radiation detection can achieve strong performance in a variety of capabilities including particle identification, directionality and spectroscopy measurements, and particle position reconstruction.
The detectors based on the liquid scintillator (LS) monitored by an array of photo-multiplier tubes (PMT) are often used in low energy experiments such as neutrino oscillation studies and search for dark matter. Detectors of this kind operate in an energy range spanning from hundreds of keV to a few GeV providing a few percent resolution at energies above 1 MeV and allowing to observe fine spectral features. This article gives a brief overview of relevant physical processes and introduces a new universal simulation tool LSMC (Liquid Scintillator Monte Carlo) for simulation of LS-based detector…
We have characterised Water-based Liquid Scintillator (WbLS) using low energy protons, UV-VIS absorbance, and fluorescence spectroscopy. We have also developed and validated a simulation model that describes the behaviour of WbLS in our detector configurations for proton beam energies of 2 GeV, 475 MeV, and 210 MeV and for two WbLS compositions. Our results have enabled us to estimate the light yield and ionisation quenching of WbLS, as well as to understand the influence of the wavelength shifting of Cerenkov light on our measurements. These results are relevant to the suitability of water-ba…
Organic liquid scintillators are used in a wide variety of applications in experimental nuclear and particle physics. Boron-loaded scintillators are particularly useful for detecting neutron captures, due to the high thermal neutron capture cross section of $^{10}$B. These scintillators are commonly used in neutron detectors, including the DarkSide-50 neutron veto, where the neutron may produce a signal when it scatters off protons in the scintillator or when it captures on $^{10}$B. Reconstructing the energy of these recoils is complicated by scintillation quenching. Understanding how nuclear…
The result of studies of the energy and spatial resolution of a large volume liquid scintillator detector are presented. The relations are obtained, which allows an estimation of the detector's energy and spatial resolutions without modeling. The relations are verified with the data obtained with the CTF detector, which is the prototype of the new detector for solar neutrinos, called Borexino. An event reconstruction technique using charge and time data from the PMTs is analyzed using the obtained relations in order to improve the detector resolution. Algorithms for the energy and coordinates …
Plastic scintillator detectors are used in high energy physics as well as for diagnostic imaging in medicine, beam monitoring on hadron therapy, muon tomography, dosimetry and many security applications. To combine particle tracking and calorimetry it is necessary to build detectors with three-dimensional granularity, i.e. small voxels of scintillator optically isolated from each other. Recently, the 3DET collaboration demonstrated the possibility to 3D print polystyrene-based scintillators with a light output performance close to that obtained with standard production methods. In this article…
The proposed work demonstrates the results of creating and investigating the mathematical model of the source of fast neutrons. The model carrier is a computer program developed in the C++ programming language in the Linux operating system environment, using the Geant4 toolkit. All necessary classes describing low-energy models were used for the simulation of the passage of neutrons through materials of detectors. Those take into account the elastic scattering, inelastic scattering, radiative capture and fission. Diagrams containing energy spectra of a source of fast neutrons modeled in two wa…

We have constructed a GEANT4-based detailed software model of photon transport in plastic scintillator blocks and have used it to study the NEMO-3 and SuperNEMO calorimeters employed in experiments designed to search for neutrinoless double beta decay. We compare our simulations to measurements using conversion electrons from a calibration source of $\rm ^{207}Bi$ and show that the agreement is improved if wavelength-dependent properties of the calorimeter are taken into account. In this article, we briefly describe our modeling approach and results of our studies.

Scintillator detectors electronics is recalibrated against the datasheet given by the manufacturer. Optimal and mutual dependent values of (a) high voltage at PMT (Photomultiplier Tube), (b) amplifier gain, (c) average time to count the radiation particles (set by operator), and (d) number of instances/sample number are estimated. Total 5: two versions of Central Limit Theorem (CLT), (3) industry preferred Pulse Width Saturation, (4) calibration based on MPPC coupled Gamma-ray detector and (5) gross method are used. It is shown that CLT method is the most optimal method to calibrate detector a…
Borexino has been running since May 2007 at the LNGS with the primary goal of detecting solar neutrinos. The detector, a large, unsegmented liquid scintillator calorimeter characterized by unprecedented low levels of intrinsic radioactivity, is optimized for the study of the lower energy part of the spectrum. During the Phase-I (2007-2010) Borexino first detected and then precisely measured the flux of the 7Be solar neutrinos, ruled out any significant day-night asymmetry of their interaction rate, made the first direct observation of the pep neutrinos, and set the tightest upper limit on the …
