We define a new local invariant (called degeneracy) associated to a triple (M,M',H), where M and M' are real submanifolds of C^N and C^N', respectively, and H: M->M' is either a holomorphic map, a formal holomorphic map, or a smooth CR-map. We use this invariant to find sufficient conditions under which finite jet dependence, convergence and algebraicity results hold.
We show that a holomorphic mapping sending one generic submanifold into another of the same dimension is CR transversal to the target submanifold provided that the source manifold is of finite type and the map is of generic full rank. This result and its corollaries completely resolve two questions posed by Linda P. Rothschild and the first author in a paper from 2006.
We give a holomorphic extension result from non generic CR submanifold of $\C^L$ of positive CR dimension. We consider $N$ a non generic CR submanifold given by $N=\{\n,h(\n)\}$ where $\n$ is a generic submanifold of some $\C^{\ell}$ and $h$ is a CR map from $\n$ into $\C^n$. We prove that if $\n$ is a hypersurface then any CR distribution on $N$ extends holomorphically to a complex transversal wedge, we then generalize this result for arbitrary $\n$ in the case where the graphing function $h$ is decomposable at some $p'\in \n$. We show that any CR distribution on $N$ that is decomposable at $…
Given $N$ a non generic smooth CR submanifold of $\C^L$, $N=\{(\n,h(\n))\}$ where $\n$ is generic in $\C^{L-n}$ and $h$ is a CR map from $\n$ into $\C^n$. We prove, using only elementary tools, that if $h$ is decomposable at $p'\in \n$ then any decomposable CR distribution on $N$ at $p=(p',h(p'))$ extends holomorphically to a complex transversal wedge. This gives an elementary proof of the well known equivalent for totally real non generic submanifolds, i.e if $N$ is a smooth totally real submanifold of $\C^L$ any continuous function on $N$ admits a holomorphic extension to a complex transvers…
It is shown that a germ of a holomorphic mapping sending a real-analytic generic submanifold of finite type into another is determined by its projection on the Segre variety of the target manifold. A necessary and sufficient condition is given for a germ of a mapping into the Segre variety of the target manifold to be the projection of a holomorphic mapping sending the source manifold into the target. An application to the biholomorphic equivalence problem is also given.
In this paper we establish some general results on local behavior of holomorphic functions along complex submanifolds of $\Co^{N}$. As a corollary, we present multi-dimensional generalizations of an important result of Coman and Poletsky on Bernstein type inequalities on transcendental curves in $\Co^{2}$.
We prove that pseudo-holomorphic discs attached to a maximal totally real submanifold inherit their regularity from the regularity of the submanifold and of the almost complex structure. The proof is based on the computation of an explicit lower bound for the Kobayashi metric in almost complex manifolds, which also yields explicit estimates of Hölderian norms of such discs.
We give some results concerning the smoothness of the image of a real-analytic submanifold in complex space under the action of a finite holomorphic mapping. For instance, if the submanifold is not contained in a proper complex subvariety, we give a necessary and sufficient condition guaranteeing that its image is smooth and the mapping is transversal to the image.
The purpose of this paper is to organize some results on the local geometry of CR singular real-analytic manifolds that are images of CR manifolds via a CR map that is a diffeomorphism onto its image. We find a necessary (sufficient in dimension 2) condition for the diffeomorphism to extend to a finite holomorphic map. The multiplicity of this map is a biholomorphic invariant that is precisely the Moser invariant of the image when it is a Bishop surface with vanishing Bishop invariant. In higher dimensions, we study Levi-flat CR singular images and we prove that the set of CR singular points m…
In this notes, we characterize discrete subgroups of PU(2,1), holomorphic isometric group of complex hyperbolic space, which have an invariant totally geodesic submanifold.
We establish results on holomorphic extension of CR-mappings of class $C^\infty$ between a real-analytic CR-submanifold of $\C^N$ and a real-algebraic CR-submanifold of $\C^{N'}$.
Let $M \subset {\mathbb{C}}^{n+1}$, $n \geq 2$, be a real codimension two CR singular real-analytic submanifold that is nondegenerate and holomorphically flat. We prove that every real-analytic function on $M$ that is CR outside the CR singularities extends to a holomorphic function in a neighborhood of $M$. Our motivation is to prove the following analogue of the Hartogs-Bochner theorem. Let $Ω\subset {\mathbb{C}}^n \times {\mathbb{R}}$, $n \geq 2$, be a bounded domain with a connected real-analytic boundary such that $\partial Ω$ has only nondegenerate CR singularities. We prove that if $f \…
Let H:(M,p)->(M',p') be a formal mapping between two germs of real-analytic generic submanifolds in C^N with nonvanishing Jacobian. Assuming M to be minimal at p and M' holomorphically nondegenerate at p', we prove the convergence of the mapping H. As a consequence, we obtain a new convergence result for arbitrary formal maps between real-analytic hypersurfaces when the target does not contain any holomorphic curve. In the case when both M and M' are hypersurfaces, we also prove the convergence of the associated reflection function when M is assumed to be only minimal. This allows us to derive…
The Umehara algebra is studied with motivation on the problem of the non-existence of common complex submanifolds. In this paper, we prove some new results in Umehara algebra and obtain some applications. In particular, if a complex manifolds admits a holomorphic polynomial isometric immersion to one indefinite complex space form, then it cannot admits a holomorphic isometric immersion to another indefinite complex space form of different type. Other consequences include the non-existence of the common complex submanifolds for indefinite complex projective space or hyperbolic space and a compl…
We consider (small) algebraic deformations of germs of real-algebraic CR submanifolds in complex space and study the biholomorphic equivalence problem for such deformations. We show that two algebraic deformations of minimal holomorphically nondegenerate real-algebraic CR submanifolds are holomorphically equivalent if and only if they are algebraically equivalent.
Nirenberg and Spencer posed the question whether the germ of a compact complex submanifold in a complex manifold is determined by its infinitesimal neighborhood of finite order when the normal bundle is sufficiently positive. To study the problem for a larger class of submanifolds, including free rational curves, we reformulate the question in the setting of families of submanifolds and their infinitesimal neighborhoods. When the submanifolds have no nonzero vector fields, we prove that it is sufficient to consider only first-order neighborhoods to have an affirmative answer to the reformulate…
We prove that a germ of a holomorphic map $f$ between $C^n$ and $C^{n'}$ sending one real-algebraic submanifold $M\subset C^n$ into another $M'\subset C^{n'}$ is algebraic provided $M'$ contains no complex-analytic discs and $M$ is generic and minimal. We also propose an algorithm for finding complex-analytic discs in a real submanifold.
We consider a smooth CR mapping $f$ from a real-analytic generic submanifold $M$ in $\bC^N$ into $\bC^N$. For $M$ of finite type and essentially finite at a point $p\in M$, and $f$ formally finite at $p$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition for $f$ to extend as a holomorphic mapping in some neighborhood of $p$. In a similar vein, we consider a formal holomorphic mapping $H$ and give a necessary and sufficient condition for $H$ to be convergent.
We give an invariant nondegeneracy condition for CR--maps between generic submanifolds in different dimensions and use it to prove a reflection principle for these maps.
It is proved that a germ of a real analytic CR map from a smooth real-analytic minimal CR manifold M to an essentially finite real-algebraic generic submanifold M' of P^N of the same CR-dimension extends as a holomorphic correspondence along M. Applications are given for pseudoconcave submanifolds of P^N.
We show the intersection of a compact almost complex subvariety of dimension $4$ and a compact almost complex submanifold of codimension $2$ is a $J$-holomorphic curve. This is a generalization of positivity of intersections for $J$-holomorphic curves in almost complex $4$-manifolds to higher dimensions. As an application, we discuss pseudoholomorphic sections of a complex line bundle. We introduce a method to produce $J$-holomorphic curves using the differential geometry of almost Hermitian manifolds. When our main result is applied to pseudoholomorphic maps, we prove the singularity subset o…
We prove a generalisation of Rudin's theorem on proper holomorphic maps from the unit ball to the case of proper holomorphic maps from pseudoellipsoids.
We study the complexity of holomorphic isometries and proper maps from the complex unit ball to type IV classical domains. We investigate on degree estimates of holomorphic isometries and holomorphic maps with minimum target dimension. We also construct a real-parameter family of mutually inequivalent holomorphic isometries from the unit ball to type IV domains. We also provide examples of non-isometric proper holomorphic maps from the complex unit ball to classical domains.
For the first obstruction to extending a holomorphic vector bundle from a submanifold of a complex manifold found by Griffiths we give an explicit formula in terms of the Atiyah class of the bundle.
Let $M$ be a closed complex submanifold in ${\mathbb C}^N$ with the complete Kähler metric induced by the Euclidean metric. Several finiteness theorems on the $L^p$ Bergman space of holomorphic sections of a given Hermitian line bundle $L$ over $M$ and the associated $L^2$ cohomology groups are obtained. Some infiniteness theorems are also given in order to test the accuracy of finiteness theorems. As applications we obtain some rigidity results concerning growth of curvatures.
In this paper, we explore holomorphic Segre preserving maps. First, we investigate holomorphic Segre preserving maps sending the complexification $\mathcal{M}$ of a generic real analytic submanifold $M \subseteq \C^N$ of finite type at some point $p$ into the complexification $\mathcal{M}'$ of a generic real analytic submanifold $M' \subseteq \C^{N'}$, finitely nondegenerate at some point $p'$. We prove that for a fixed $M$ and $M'$, the germs at $(p,\bar{p})$ of Segre submersive holomorphic Segre preserving maps sending $(\M,(p,\bar{p}))$ into $(\M',(p', \bar{p}'))$ can be parametrized by the…
We solve the non-linear Cousin problem for $J$-holomorphic maps. That is, we provide a gluing method for the pseudoholomorphic maps defined on a Cartan pair of domains in $\mathbb{C}$.
We show that the $\bar{\partial}$-problem is globally regular on a domain in $\mathbb{C}^n$, which is the $n$-fold symmetric product of a smoothly bounded planar domain. Remmert-Stein type theorems are proved for proper holomorphic maps between equidimensional symmetric products and proper holomorphic maps from cartesian products to symmetric products. It is shown that proper holomorphic maps between equidimensional symmetric products of smooth planar domains are smooth up to the boundary
We characterize pairs of bounded Reinhardt domains in $\CC^2$ between which there exists a proper holomorphic map and find all proper maps that are not elementary algebraic.
We prove that two proper holomorphic polynomial maps between bounded symmetric domains of classical type which preserve the origin are equivalent if and only if they are isotropically equivalent.
We study monodromy of holomorphic motions and show the equivalence of triviality of monodromy of holomorphic motions and extensions of holomorphic motions to continuous motions of the Riemann sphere. We also study liftings of holomorphic maps into certain Teichmüller spaces. We use this "lifting property" to prove that, under the condition of trivial monodromy, any holomorphic motion of a closed set in the Riemann sphere, over a hyperbolic Riemann surface, can be extended to a holomorphic motion of the sphere, over the same parameter space. We conclude that this extension can be done in a conf…
Invariants for Riemann surfaces covered by the disc and for hyperbolic manifolds in general involving minimizing the measure of the image over the homotopy and homology classes of closed curves and maps of the $k$-sphere into the manifold are investigated. The invariants are monotonic under holomorphic mappings and strictly monotonic under certain circumstances. Applications to holomorphic maps of annular regions in $\mathbb{C}$ and tubular neighborhoods of compact totally real submanifolds in general in $\mathbb{C}^n$, $n \geq 2$, are given. The contractibility of a hyperbolic domain with con…
A theorem of A. Ostrowski describing meromorphic functions f such that the family {f(kz):k in C*} is normal, is generalized to holomorphic maps from $C*$ to a projective space.
In this paper we introduce a class of pseudo-dissipative holomorphic maps which contains, in particular, the class of infinitesimal generators of semigroups of holomorphic maps on the unit ball of a complex Banach space. We give a growth estimate for maps of this class. In particular, it follows that pseudo-dissipative maps on the unit ball of (infinite-dimensional) Banach spaces are bounded on each domain strictly contained inside the ball. We also present some applications.
We show that the only proper-holomorphic self-maps of bounded domains in C^k whose dynamics escape to a strictly pseudoconvex point of the boundary are automorphisms of the euclidean ball. This is a Wong-Rosay type result for a sequence of maps whose degrees are a priori unbounded.
We study discrete fixed point sets of holomorphic self-maps of complex manifolds. The main attention is focused on the cardinality of this set and its configuration. As a consequence of one of our observations, a bounded domain in ${\Bbb C}^n$ with no non-trivial holomorphic retractions is constructed.
It is proved that the germ of a holomorphic map from a real analytic hypersurface M in C^n into a strictly pseudoconvex compact real algebraic hypersurface M' in C^N, 1 < n < N extends holomorphically along any path on M.
The purpose of this article is threefold. The first is to construct a Nevanlina theory for meromorphic mappings from a polydisc to a compact complex manifold. In particular, we give a simple proof of Lemma on logarithmic derivative for nonzero meromorphic functions on $\mathbb{C}^l.$ The second is to improve the definition of the non-integrated defect relation of H. Fujimoto \cite{F2} and to show two theorems on the new non-integrated defect relation of meromorphic maps from a closed submanifold of $\mathbb{C}^l$ to a compact complex manifold. The third is to give a unicity theorem for meromor…
In a setting of a complex manifold with a fixed positive line bundle and a submanifold, we consider the optimal Ohsawa-Takegoshi extension operator, sending a holomorphic section of the line bundle on the submanifold to the holomorphic extension of it on the ambient manifold with the minimal $L^2$-norm. We show that for a tower of submanifolds in the semiclassical setting, i.e. when we consider a large tensor power of the line bundle, the extension operators satisfy transitivity property modulo some small defect, which can be expressed through Toeplitz type operators. We calculate the first si…
The aim of this paper is to present a simple way to generate proper monomial rational maps between generalized balls and via the relations between generalized balls and bounded symmetric domains of type I, we suggest new examples of proper holomorphic maps between bounded symmetric domains of type I.
We study semiclassical Gevrey pseudodifferential operators, acting on exponentially weighted spaces of entire holomorphic functions. The symbols of such operators are Gevrey functions defined on suitable I-Lagrangian submanifolds of the complexified phase space, which are extended almost holomorphically in the same Gevrey class, or in some larger space, to complex neighborhoods of these submanifolds. Using almost holomorphic extensions, we obtain uniformly bounded realizations of such operators on a natural scale of exponentially weighted spaces of holomorphic functions for all Gevrey indices,…
We show that any Dolbeault cohomology group $H^{p,q}(D)$, $p\ge0$, $q\ge1$, of an open subset $D$ of a closed finite codimensional complex Hilbert submanifold of $\ell_2$ is either zero or infinite dimensional. We also show that any continuous character of the algebra of holomorphic functions of a closed complex Hilbert submanifold $M$ of $\ell_2$ is induced by evaluation at a point of $M$. Lastly, we prove that any closed split infinite dimensional complex Banach submanifold of $\ell_1$ admits a nowhere critical holomorphic function.
We study a germ of real analytic $n$-dimensional submanifold of ${\mathbf C}^n$ that has a complex tangent space of maximal dimension at a CR singularity. Under the condition that its complexification admits the maximum number of deck transformations, we study its transformation to a normal form under the action of local (possibly formal) biholomorphisms at the singularity. We first conjugate formally its associated reversible map $σ$ to suitable normal forms and show that all these normal forms can be divergent. If the singularity is {\it abelian}, we show, under some assumptions on the linea…
The Teichmuller space Teich(S) of a surface S in genus g>1 is a real submanifold of the quasifuchsian space QF(S). We show that the determinant of the Laplacian det'(Delta) on Teich(S) has a unique holomorphic extension to QF(S).
Iterated Segre mappings of real analytic generic submanifolds in complex space have been an essential tool in the study of holomorphic, formal, and CR mappings between such manifolds. In this paper we present a theory of iterated Segre mappings for smooth or formal submanifolds. In particular, we characterize finite type in terms of the rank of the iterated Segre mappings. The approach given here is new, simplifies proofs, and extends results previously known for the real analytic case.
We study a germ of real analytic n-dimensional submanifold of C n that has a complex tangent space of maximal dimension at a CR singularity. Under some assumptions , we show its equivalence to a normal form under a local biholomorphism at the singularity. We also show that if a real submanifold is formally equivalent to a quadric, it is actually holomorphically equivalent to it, if a small divisors condition is satisfied. Finally, we investigate the existence of a complex submanifold of positive dimension in C n that intersects a real submanifold along two totally and real analytic submanifold…
A local uniqueness property of holomorphic functions on real-analytic nowhere minimal CR submanifolds of higher codimension is investigated. A sufficient condition called almost minimality is given and studied. A weaker necessary condition, being contained a possibly singular real-analytic Levi-flat hypersurface is studied and characterized. This question is completely resolved for algebraic submanifolds of codimension 2 and a sufficient condition for noncontainment is given for non algebraic submanifolds. As a consequence, an example of a submanifold of codimension 2, not biholomorphically eq…
Moduli spaces of holomorphic disks in a complex manifold Z, with boundaries constrained to lie in a maximal totally real submanifold P, have recently been found to underlie a number of geometrically rich twistor correspondences. The purpose of this paper is to develop a general Fredholm regularity criterion for holomorphic curves-with-boundary, and then show how this applies, in particular, to various moduli problems of twistor-theoretic interest.
A class of maps in a complex Banach space is studied, which includes both unbounded linear operators and nonlinear holomorphic maps. The defining property, which we call {\sl pseudo-contractivity}, is introduced by means of the Abel averages of such maps. We show that the studied maps are dissipative in the spirit of the classical Lumer-Phillips theorem. For pseudo-contractive holomorphic maps, we establish the power convergence of the Abel averages to holomorphic retractions.
The aim of these lectures is the study of bifurcations within holomorphic families of polynomials or rational maps by mean of ergodic and pluripotential theoretic tools.
We prove that the space of surjective holomorphic maps from a compact complex manifold to a compact Kähler manifold with trivial canonical class and finite fundamental group is discrete.
