For the first obstruction to extending a holomorphic vector bundle from a submanifold of a complex manifold found by Griffiths we give an explicit formula in terms of the Atiyah class of the bundle.
We prove integral curvature bounds in terms of the Betti numbers for compact submanifolds of the Euclidean space with low codimension. As an application, we obtain topological obstructions for $δ$-pinched immersions. Furthermore, we obtain intrinsic obstructions for minimal submanifolds in spheres with pinched second fundamental form.
We provide integral curvature bounds for compact Riemannian manifolds that allow isometric immersions into a Euclidean space with low codimension in terms of the Betti numbers.
This paper concerns obstruction flatness of hypersurfaces $Σ$ that arise as unit sphere bundles $S(E)$ of Griffiths negative Hermitian vector bundles $(E, h)$ over Kähler manifolds $(M, g).$ We prove that if the curvature of $(E, h)$ satisfies a splitting condition and $(M,g)$ has constant Ricci eigenvalues, then $S(E)$ is obstruction flat. If, in addition, all these eigenvalues are strictly less than one and $(M,g)$ is complete, then we show that the corresponding ball bundle admits a complete Kähler-Einstein metric.
Obstruction flatness of a strongly pseudoconvex hypersurface $Σ$ in a complex manifold refers to the property that any (local) Kähler-Einstein metric on the pseudoconvex side of $Σ$, complete up to $Σ$, has a potential $-\log u$ such that $u$ is $C^\infty$-smooth up to $Σ$. In general, $u$ has only a finite degree of smoothness up to $Σ$. In this paper, we study obstruction flatness of hypersurfaces $Σ$ that arise as unit circle bundles $S(L)$ of negative Hermitian line bundles $(L, h)$ over Kähler manifolds $(M, g).$ We prove that if $(M,g)$ has constant Ricci eigenvalues, then $S(L)$ is obst…
This paper is devoted to the study of the embeddings of a complex submanifold $S$ inside a larger complex manifold $M$; in particular, we are interested in comparing the embedding of $S$ in $M$ with the embedding of $S$ as the zero section in the total space of the normal bundle $N_S$ of $S$ in $M$. We explicitely describe some cohomological classes allowing to measure the difference between the two embeddings, in the spirit of the work by Grauert, Griffiths, and Camacho-Movasati-Sad; we are also able to explain the geometrical meaning of the separate vanishing of these classes. Our results ho…
We give a full description of totally geodesic submanifolds in the tangent bundle of a Riemannian 2-manifold of constant curvature and present a new class of a cylinder-type totally geodesic submanifolds in the general case.
We construct calibrated submanifolds of R^7 and R^8 by viewing them as total spaces of vector bundles and taking appropriate sub-bundles which are naturally defined using certain surfaces in R^4. We construct examples of associative and coassociative submanifolds of R^7 and of Cayley submanifolds of R^8. This construction is a generalization of the Harvey-Lawson bundle construction of special Lagrangian submanifolds of R^{2n}.
It is showed that many examples of AMD submanifolds of higher dimensions come from SL normal bundles. A symmetry property of SL submanifolds and Björling type problem for SL normal bundles are also mentioned.
We extend the notion of $r$-minimality of a submanifold in arbitrary codimension to $u$-minimality for a multi-index $u\in\mathbb{N}^q$, where $q$ is the codimension. This approach is based on the analysis on the frame bundle of orthonormal frames of the normal bundle to a submanifold and vector bundles associated with this bundle. The notion of $u$-minimality comes from the variation of $σ_u$-symmetric function obtained from the family of shape operators corresponding to all possible bases of the normal bundle. We obtain the variation field, which gives alternative definition of $u$--minimali…
For every codimension two spacelike submanifold of a Lorentz manifold and each choice of a normal lightlike vector field, we introduce a canonical way to construct a tractor conformal bundle. We characterize when the induced connection of a such submanifold defines a tractor connection and then, in this case, when this tractor conformal bundle with the induced connection is standard for the induced metric. Finally, the normality condition for this tractor conformal bundle endowed with the induced connection is characterized in terms of a strong relationship between the intrinsic and the extrin…
In the paper we investigate submanifolds in a tangent bundle endowed with g-natural metric G, defined by a vector field on a base manifold. We give a sufficient condition for a vector field on M to defined totally geodesic submanifold in (TM,G). The parallel vector field is discussed in more detail.
In this paper, we analyze the geometric structure of an Euclidean submanifold whose osculating spaces form a nonconstant family of proper subspaces of the same dimension. We prove that if the rate of change of the osculating spaces is small, then the submanifold must be a (submanifold of a) ruled submanifold of a very special type. We also give a sharp estimate of the dimension of the rulings.
An isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold M into a Riemannian manifold N gives rise in a natural way to the immersion of the tangent bundle TM into the tangent bundle TN with a non-degenerate g- natural metric G.
We prove that any conformally flat submanifold with flat normal bundle in a conformally flat Riemannian manifold is locally holonomic, that is, admits a principal coordinate system. As one of the consequences of this fact, it is shown that the Ribaucour transformation can be used to construct an associated large family of immersions with induced conformal metrics holonomic with respect to the same coordinate system.
A well-known result asserts that any isometric immersion with flat normal bundle of a Riemannian manifold with constant sectional curvature into a space form is (at least locally) holonomic. In this note, we show that this conclusion remains valid for the larger class of Einstein manifolds. As an application, when assuming that the index of relative nullity of the immersion is a positive constant we conclude that the submanifold has the structure of a generalized cylinder over a submanifold with flat normal bundle.
Coassociative submanifolds are 4-dimensional calibrated submanifolds in $G_{2}$-manifolds. In this paper, we construct explicit examples of coassociative submanifolds in $Λ^{2}_{-} S^{4}$, which is the complete $G_{2}$-manifold constructed by Bryant and Salamon. Classifying the Lie groups which have 3- or 4-dimensional orbits, we show that the only homogeneous coassociative submanifold is the zero section of $Λ^{2}_{-} S^{4}$ up to the automorphisms and construct many cohomogeneity one examples explicitly. In particular, we obtain examples of non-compact coassociative submanifolds with conical…
Motivated to study the geometry of the exotic spheres constructed in [5], we derive a necessary condition for non-negative sectional curvature in certain total spaces of Riemannian submersions with totally geodesic fibers. In particular, we prove that the bundles in [5] and [1] have sections of negative curvature.
Let $M$ be a submanifold of a Riemannian manifold $(N,g)$. $M$ induces a subbundle $O(M,N)$ of adapted frames over $M$ of the bundle of orthonormal frames $O(N)$. Riemannian metric $g$ induces natural metric on $O(N)$. We study the geometry of a submanifold $O(M,N)$ in $O(N)$. We characterize the horizontal distribution of $O(M,N)$ and state its correspondence with the horizontal lift in $O(N)$ induced by the Levi--Civita connection on $N$. In the case of extrinsic geometry, we show that minimality is equivalent to harmonicity of the Gauss map of the submanifold $M$ with deformed Riemannian me…
It is well-known that if $ξ$ is a smooth vector field on a given Riemannian manifold $M^n$ then $ξ$ naturally defines a submanifold $ξ(M^n)$ transverse to the fibers of the tangent bundle $TM^n$ with Sasaki metric. In this paper, we are interested in transverse totally geodesic submanifolds of the tangent bundle. We show that a transverse submanifold $N^l$ of $TM^n$ ($1 \leq l \leq n$) can be realized locally as the image of a submanifold $F^l$ of $M^n$ under some vector field $ξ$ defined along $F^l$. For such images $ξ(F^l)$, the conditions to be totally geodesic are presented. We show that t…
We sketch a geometric proof of the classical theorem of Atiyah, Bott, and Shapiro \cite{ABS} which relates Clifford modules to vector bundles over spheres. Every module of the Clifford algebra $Cl_k$ defines a particular vector bundle over $§^{k+1}$, a generalized Hopf bundle, and the theorem asserts that this correspondence between $Cl_k$-modules and stable vector bundles over $§^{k+1}$ is an isomorphism modulo $Cl_{k+1}$-modules. We prove this theorem directly, based on explicit deformations as in Milnor's book on Morse theory \cite{M}, and without referring to the Bott periodicity theorem a…
This paper is a continuation of math.DG/0408005. We first construct special Lagrangian submanifolds of the Ricci-flat Stenzel metric (of holonomy SU(n)) on the cotangent bundle of S^n by looking at the conormal bundle of appropriate submanifolds of S^n. We find that the condition for the conormal bundle to be special Lagrangian is the same as that discovered by Harvey-Lawson for submanifolds in R^n in their pioneering paper. We also construct calibrated submanifolds in complete metrics with special holonomy G_2 and Spin(7) discovered by Bryant and Salamon on the total spaces of appropriate bun…
We show the total space of the canonical line bundle $\mathbb{L}$ of a Kahler-Einstein manifold $X^n$ supports integrable $SU(n+1)$ structures, or Calabi-Yau structures. The canonical real line bundle $L \subset \mathbb{L}$ over a minimal Lagrangian submanifold $M \subset X$ is calibrated in this setting and hence can be considered as the special Lagrangian lift of $M$. For the integrable $G_2$ and $Spin(7)$ structures on spin bundles and bundles of anti-self-dual 2-forms on self-dual Einstein 4-manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon, minimal surfaces with vanishing complex quartic form (…
An isometric immersion of a Riemannian manifold $M$ into a Riemannian manifold $N$ gives rise in a natural way to variety of immersions into the tangent bundle $TN$ with a non-degenerate $g-$ natural metric $G$. In the paper we introduce and study an immersion into $TN$ defined by the immersion $f:M\longrightarrow N$ itself and the normal bundle.
This is the content of a talk given by the author at the 2009 Lehigh University Geometry/Topology Conference. Using the definition of connection given by Dieudonné, the Sasaki metric on the tangent bundle to a Riemannian manifold is expressed in a natural way. Also, the following property is established. The induced metric on the tangent bundle of an isometrically embedded submanifold is the Sasaki metric if and only if the submanifold is totally geodesic.
The following results are proved: Theorem 1. A totally real semiparallel submanifold of constant curvature with parallel f-structure in the normal bundle of a Kähler manifold N is flat or a totally geodesic submanifold of N. Theorem 2. A totally real minimal semiparallel submanifold M with parallel f-structure in the normal bundle and of constant length of the second fundamental form (or equivalently of constant scalar curvature) of a complex space form N is totally geodesic in N or of positive scalar curvature. Moreover, if the scalar curvature of M vanishes, then M is flat. Theorem 3. A comp…
We write down the local equations that characterize the submanifolds N of a Dirac manifold M which have a normal bundle that is either a coisotropic or an isotropic submanifold of TM endowed with the tangent Dirac structure. In the Poisson case, these formulas prove again a result of Xu: the submanifold N has a normal bundle which is a coisotropic submanifold of TM with the tangent Poisson structure iff N is a Dirac submanifold. In the presymplectic case, it is the isotropy of the normal bundle which characterizes the corresponding notion of a Dirac submanifold. On the way, we give a simple de…
We demonstrate an obstruction to finding certain splittings of four-manifolds along sufficiently twisted circle bundles over Riemann surfaces, arising from Seiberg-Witten theory. These obstructions are used to show a non-splitting result for algebraic surfaces of general type.
Branched covers of orbit cylinders are the basic examples of holomorphic curves studied in symplectic field theory. Since all curves with Fredholm index one can never be regular for any choice of cylindrical almost complex structure, we generalize the obstruction bundle technique of Taubes for determining multiple cover contributions from Gromov-Witten theory to the case of moduli spaces with boundary. Our result proves that the differential in rational symplectic field theory and contact homology is strictly decreasing with respect to the natural action filtration.
We give a geometric obstruction to the non-negativity of the sectional curvature in the total spaces of certain Riemannian submersions with totally geodesic fibers; applications of this obstruction to several examples are given.
Given the Lagrangian fibration $T^4\to T^2$ and a Lagrangian submanifold, exhibiting an elliptic umbilic and supporting a flat line bundle, we study, in the context of mirror symmetry, the ``quantum'' corrections necessary to solve the monodromy of the holomorphic structure of the mirror bundle on the dual fibration.
This paper considers the Pontryagin characters of graded vector bundles of finite rank, in the cohomology vector spaces of a Lie algebroid over the same base. These Pontryagin characters vanish if the graded vector bundle carries a representation up to homotopy of the Lie algebroid. As a consequence, this gives a strong obstruction to the existence of a representation up to homotopy on a graded vector bundle of finite rank. In particular, if a graded vector bundle $E[0]\oplus F[1]\to M$ carries a $2$-term representation up to homotopy of a Lie algebroid $A\to M$, then all the (classical) $A$-P…
This is the fourth in a series of five papers math.DG/0211294, math.DG/0211295, math.DG/0302355, math.DG/0303272 studying compact special Lagrangian submanifolds (SL m-folds) X in (almost) Calabi-Yau m-folds M with singularities x_1,...,x_n locally modelled on special Lagrangian cones C_1,...,C_n in C^m with isolated singularities at 0. Readers are advised to begin with the final paper math.DG/0303272 which surveys the series, gives examples, and applies the results to prove some conjectures. In this paper, we study deformations of compact holomorphic Poisson submanifolds which extend Kodaira's series of papers on semi-regularity (deformations of compact complex submanifolds of codimension 1), deformations of compact complex submanifolds of arbitrary codimensions, and stability of compact complex submanifolds in the context of holomorphic Poisson deformations. We also study simultaneous deformations of holomorphic Poisson structures and holomorphic Poisson submanifolds on a fixed underlying compact complex manifold. In appendices, we present deformations of Poisson closed subscheme…
Examples of almost-positively and quasi-positively curved spaces of the form M=H((G,h)xF) were discovered recently. Here, h is a left-invariant metric on a compact Lie group G, F is a compact Riemannian manifold on which the subgroup H of G acts isometrically on the left, and M is the orbit space of the diagonal left action of H on (G,h)xF with the induced Riemannian submersion metric. We prove that no new examples of strictly positive sectional curvature exist in this class of metrics. This result generalizes the case F={point} proven by Geroch.
A submanifold is said to be tangentially biharmonic if the bitension field of the isometric immersion that defines the submanifold has vanishing tangential component. The purpose of this paper is to prove that a surface in Euclidean $3$-space has tangentially biharmonic normal bundle if and only if it is either minimal, a part of a round sphere, or a part of a circular cylinder.
When the rank of the bundle is $\geq 2$, in a certain sense, we found an essential obstruction for the gluing construction of $G_{2}-$instantons with $1-$dimensional singularities. It involves the Atiyah classes generated by contracting a vector in $\mathbb{C}^{3}$ with the curvature. Intuitively speaking, the gluing does not work if the tangent connection at a component of the $1-$dimensional singular locus is not the twisted Fubini-Study connection on a twisted tangent bundle of $\mathbb{P}^{2}$. Particularly, it fails if the rank of the bundle is $\geq 3$.
We give a definition of the Maslov fibre bundle for a lagrangian submanifold of the cotangent bundle of a smooth manofold. This definition generelizes the definition given, in homotopic terms, by Arnol'd for lagrangian submanifolds of the cotangent bundle of the euclidean space and coincides with the one of Hörmander in his works about Fourier Inegral Operators.
In the theory of minimal submanifold, the following problem is fundamental: when does a given Riemannian manifold admit (or does not admit) a minimal isometric immersion into an Euclidean space form of arbitrary dimension? A partial solution of this problem was obtained by B.Y. Chen as an application of his fundamental inequality [1]. In this paper we obtain another partial solution of this problem.
We study the uniqueness of minimal submanifolds and the stability of the mean curvature flow in several well-known model spaces of manifolds of special holonomy. These include the Stenzel metric on the cotangent bundle of spheres, the Calabi metric on the cotangent bundle of complex projective spaces, and the Bryant--Salamon metrics on vector bundles over certain Einstein manifolds. In particular, we show that the zero sections, as calibrated submanifolds with respect to their respective ambient metrics, are unique among compact minimal submanifolds and are dynamically stable under the mean cu…
In this paper, by studying the position of umbilical normal vectors in the normal bundle, we prove that pseudo-umbilical totally real submanifolds with flat normal connection in non-flat complex space forms must be minimal.
In this paper, we investigate the action of pseudogroup of all point transformations on the natural bundle of equations $y'' = u^0(x,y) + u^1(x,y)y' + u^2(x,y)(y')^2 + u^3(x,y)(y')^3$. We calculate the 1-st nontrivial differential invariant of this action. It is a horizontal differential 2-form with values in some algebra, it is defined on the bundle of 2--jets of sections of the considered bundle. We prove that this form is a unique obstruction to linearizability of these equations by point transformations.
Alan Weinstein showed that certain characteristic numbers of any Riemannian submersion with totally geodesic fibers and positive vertizontal curvatures are nonzero. In this paper we explicitly compute these invariants in terms of Chern and Pontrjagin numbers of the bundle. This allows us to show that many bundles do not admit such metrics.
In this paper, we consider the conormal bundle over a submanifold in a Finsler manifold and establish a volume comparison theorem. As an application, we derive a lower estimate for length of closed geodesics in a Finsler manifold. In the reversible case, a lower bound of injective radius is also obtained.
