Let $G$ be an algebraic group, $X$ a generically free $G$-variety, and $K=k(X)^G$. A field extension $L$ of $K$ is called a splitting field of $X$ if the image of the class of $X$ under the natural map $H^1(K, G) \mapsto H^1(L, G)$ is trivial. If $L/K$ is a (finite) Galois extension then $\Gal(L/K)$ is called a splitting group of $X$.
We prove a lower bound on the size of a splitting field of $X$ in terms of fixed points of nontoral abelian subgroups of $G$. A similar result holds for splitting groups. We give a number of applications, including a new construction of noncrossed product division algebras.
We prove an analogue of Horrocks' splitting theorem for Segre-Veronese varieties building upon the theory of Tate resolutions on products of projective spaces.
Extending the notion of Frobenius-splitting, we prove that every finite height Calabi-Yau variety defined over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic can be lifted to the ring of Witt vectors of length two.
We generalize Horrocks' criterion for the splitting of vector bundles on projective space. We establish an analogous splitting criterion for vector bundles on a class of smooth complex projective varieties of dimension at least four, over which every extension of line bundles splits.
I prove that a vector bundle on a minuscule homogeneous variety splits into a direct sum of line bundles if and only if its restriction to the union of two-dimensional Schubert subvarieties splits. A case-by-case analysis is done.
We systematically study the splitting of vector bundles on a smooth, projective variety, whose restriction to the zero locus of a regular section of an ample vector bundle splits. First, we find ampleness and genericity conditions which ensure that the splitting of the vector bundle along the subvariety implies its global splitting. Second, we obtain a simple splitting criterion for vector bundles on the Grassmannian and on partial flag varieties.
We connect Veronese embeddings to splitting varieties of cup products. We then give an algorithm for constructing splitting varieties for cup products with $\mathbb Z/n$ coefficients, with an explicit calculation for $n=3$. An application to the automatic realization of Galois groups is given.
The splitting of the Frobenius direct image of line bundles on toric varieties is used to explicitly construct an orthogonal basis of line bundles in the derived category D^b(X) where X is a Fano toric variety with (almost) maximal Picard number.
Lakshmibai, Mehta and Parameswaran (LMP) introduced the notion of maximal multiplicity vanishing in Frobenius splitting. In this paper we define the algebraic analogue of this concept and construct a Frobenius splitting vanishing with maximal multiplicity on the diagonal of the full flag variety. Our splitting induces a diagonal Frobenius splitting of maximal multiplicity for a special class of smooth Schubert varieties first considered by Kempf. Consequences are Frobenius splitting of tangent bundles, of blow-ups along the diagonal in flag varieties along with the LMP and Wahl conjectures in …
We discuss a characteristic free version of Frobenius splittings for toric varieties and give a polyhedral criterion for a toric variety to be diagonally split. We apply this criterion to show that section rings of nef line bundles on diagonally split toric varieties are normally presented and Koszul, and that Schubert varieties are not diagonally split in general.
Here we consider the product of varieties with $n$-blocks collections . We give some cohomological splitting conditions for rank 2 bundles. A cohomological characterization for vector bundles is also provided. The tools are Beilinson's type spectral sequences generalized by Costa and Miró-Roig. Moreover we introduce a notion of Castelnuovo-Mumford regularity on a product of finitely many projective spaces and smooth quadric hypersurfaces in order to prove two splitting criteria for vector bundle with arbitrary rank.
Let $\Fl^a_\la$ be the PBW degeneration of the flag varieties of type $A_{n-1}$. These varieties are singular and are acted upon with the degenerate Lie group $SL_n^a$. We prove that $\Fl^a_\la$ have rational singularities, are normal and locally complete intersections, and construct a desingularization $R_\la$ of $\Fl^a_\la$. The varieties $R_\la$ can be viewed as towers of successive $\bP^1$-fibrations, thus providing an analogue of the classical Bott-Samelson-Demazure-Hansen desingularization. We prove that the varieties $R_\la$ are Frobenius split. This gives us Frobenius splitting for the…
Recently E. Feigin introduced the $\mathbb G_a^N$-degenerations of semisimple algebraic groups and their associated degenerate flag varieties. It has been shown by Feigin, Finkelberg, and Littelmann that the degenerate flag varieties in types $A_n$ and $C_n$ are Frobenius split. In this paper we construct an associated degeneration of homogeneous coordinate rings of classical flag varieties in all types and show that these rings are Frobenius split in most types. It follows that the degenerate flag varieties of types $A_n$, $C_n$ and $G_2$ are Frobenius split. In particular we obtain an altern…
Following the program of algebraic Frobenius splitting begun by Kumar and Littelmann, we use representation-theoretic techniques to construct a Frobenius splitting of the cotangent bundle of the flag variety of a semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. We also show that this splitting is the same as one of the splittings constructed by Kumar, Lauritzen, and Thomsen.
Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. In this note, we show that an irreducible closed subvariety of the flag variety of G is compatibly split by the unique canonical Frobenius splitting if and only if it is a Richardson variety, i.e. an intersection of a Schubert and an opposite Schubert variety.
We show that the fundamental class in K-homology of a Frobenius split scheme can be computed as a certain alternating sum over irreducible varieties, with the coefficients computed using Möbius inversion on a certain poset. If G/P is a generalized flag manifold and X is an irreducible subvariety homologous to a multiplicity-free union of Schubert varieties, then using a result of Brion we show how to compute the K_0-class [X] in K_0(G/P) from the Chow class in A_*(G/P).
This article is a continuation of a previous article which concerned the splitting problem for subspaces of superspaces. We begin with a general account of projective superspaces. Subsequently, we specialise to subvarieties of `positive' projective superspaces. Our main result is: positive, projective superspaces are `normal', in a sense we define. Then, among others, our main application is: smooth, non-reduced, superspace quadric hypersurfaces are non-split.
This paper is a continuation of our paper math.AG/0006222. We study the reduction of certain PEL Shimura varieties with parahoric level structure at primes p at which the group that defines the Shimura variety ramifies. We describe "good" $p$-adic integral models of these Shimura varieties and study their 'etale local structure. In particular, we exhibit a stratification of their (singular) special fibers and give a partial calculation of the sheaf of nearby cycles.
For a smooth toric variety X over a field of positive characteristic, a T-equivariant étale cover Y \rightarrow T^*X^{(1)} trivializing the sheaf of crystalline differential operators on X is constructed. This trivialization is used to show that the sheaf of differential operators is a trivial Azumaya algebra along the fibers of the moment map. This result is then extended to certain Azumaya algebras on hypertoric varieties, whose global sections are central reductions of the hypertoric enveloping algebra in positive characteristic. A criteria for a derived Beilinson-Bernstein localization the…
Let $X$ be an equivariant embedding of a connected reductive group $G$ over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic. Let $B$ denote a Borel subgroup of $G$. A $G$-Schubert variety in $X$ is a subvariety of the form $\diag(G) \cdot V$, where $V$ is a $B \times B$-orbit closure in $X$. In the case where $X$ is the wonderful compactification of a group of adjoint type, the $G$-Schubert varieties are the closures of Lusztig's $G$-stable pieces. We prove that $X$ admits a Frobenius splitting which is compatible with all $G$-Schubert varieties. Moreover, when $X$ is smooth, proj…
The goal of this paper is to construct a Frobenius splitting on $G/U$ via the Poisson geometry of $(G/U,π_{G/U})$, where $G$ is a semi-simple algebraic group of classical type defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 3$, $U$ is the uniradical of a Borel subgroup of $G$ and $π_{G/U}$ is the standard Poisson structure on $G/U$. We first study the Poisson geometry of $(G/U,π_{G/U})$. Then, we develop a general theory for Frobenius splittings on $\mathbb{T}$-Poisson varieties, where $\mathbb{T}$ is an algebraic torus. In particular, we prove that compatibly split subvariet…
Let $H$ be a diagonalizable group over an algebraically closed field $k$ of positive characteristic, and $X$ a normal $k$-variety with an $H$-action. Under a mild hypothesis, e.g. $H$ a torus or $X$ quasiprojective, we construct a certain quotient log pair $(Y,Δ)$ and show that $X$ is F-split (F-regular) if and only if the pair $(Y,Δ)$ if F-split (F-regular). We relate splittings of $X$ compatible with $H$-invariant subvarieties to compatible splittings of $(Y,Δ)$, as well as discussing diagonal splittings of $X$. We apply this machinery to analyze the F-splitting and F-regularity of complexit…
We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex quasi-projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. The mixed Hodge structures can thus be recovered from the Gysin spectral sequence of cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, th…
Let G be a semisimple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic p. Generalizing the construction of the PBW filtration on Weyl modules for G we construct a G-stable filtration on tensor products of Weyl modules which we call the induced PBW filtration. We use this filtration to give some purely representation-theoretic conditions which are equivalent to the existence of a Frobenius splitting of the double flag variety $G/B \times G/B$ that maximally compatibly splits the diagonal. In particular, this gives a sufficient condition for Wahl's conjecture to hold…
We classify holomorphic as well as algebraic torus equivariant principal $G$-bundles over a nonsingular toric variety $X$, where $G$ is a complex linear algebraic group. It is shown that any such bundle over an affine, nonsingular toric variety admits a trivialization in equivariant sense. We also obtain some splitting results.
We use the G-invariant non-degenerate form on the Steinberg module to Frobenius split the cotangent bundle of a flag variety in good prime characteristics. This was previously only known for the general linear group. Applications are a vanishing theorem for pull back of line bundles to the cotangent bundle (proved for the classical groups and G_2 by Andersen and Jantzen and in characteristic zero by B. Broer (for all groups)), normality and rational singularities for the subregular nilpotent variety and good filtrations of the global sections of pull backs of line bundles to the cotangent bund…
An important breakthrough in understanding the geometry of Schubert varieties was the introduction of the notion of Frobenius split varieties and the result that the flag varieties G/P are Frobenius split. The aim of this article is to give in this case a complete and self contained representation theoretic approach to this method. The geometric Frobenius method in (char k=p>0) will here be replaced by Lusztig's Frobenius maps for quantum groups at roots of unity (which exist not only for primes but any odd integer \ell >1).
In this paper, we study the global $F$-splitting of varieties admitting an int-amplified endomoprhism. We prove that surfaces admitting an int-amplified endomorphism are of dense globally $F$-split type and, in particular, of Calabi-Yau type.
Using the theory of spherical varieties and especially Frobenius splitting results for symmetric varieties, we give a type independent very short proof of Wahl's conjecture for cominuscule homogeneous spaces for all primes different from 2.
We study aspects of the A^1-homotopy classification problem in dimensions >= 3 and, to this end, we investigate the problem of computing A^1-homotopy groups of some A^1-connected smooth varieties of dimension >=. Using these computations, we construct pairs of A^1-connected smooth proper varieties all of whose A^1-homotopy groups are abstractly isomorphic, yet which are not A^1-weakly equivalent. The examples come from pairs of Zariski locally trivial projective space bundles over projective spaces and are of the smallest possible dimension. Projectivizations of vector bundles give rise to A^1…
We exhibit basic algebro-geometric results on the formal model of semi-infinite flag varieties and its Schubert varieties over an algebraically closed field $\mathbb K$ of characteristic $\neq 2$ from scratch. We show that the formal model of a semi-infinite flag variety admits a unique nice (ind)scheme structure, its projective coordinate ring has a $\mathbb Z$-model, and it admits a Frobenius splitting compatible with the boundaries and opposite cells in positive characteristic. This establishes the normality of the Schubert varieties of the quasi-map space with a fixed degree (instead of th…
This paper is about sheaf cohomology for varieties (schemes) in characteristic $p>0$. We assume the presence of a Frobenius splitting. (See V.B. Mehta and A. Ramanathan, Frobenius splitting and cohomology vanishing for Schubert varieties, Annals of Math. 122 (1985), 27--40). The main result is that a non-zero higher direct image under a proper map of the ideal sheaf of a compatibly Frobenius split subvariety can not have a support whose inverse image is contained in that subvariety. Earlier vanishing theorems for Frobenius split varieties were based on direct limits and Serre's vanishing theor…
Let Y be a subvariety of a smooth projective variety X, and V a vector bundle on X. Given that the restriction of V to Y splits into a direct sum of line bundles, we ask whether V splits on X. I answer this question in affirmative if holds: Y is a q-ample subvariety of X (for appropriate q), it admits sufficiently many embedded deformations, and is very general within its own deformation space. The result goes beyond the previously known splitting criteria for vector bundles corresponding to restrictions. It allows to treat in a unified way examples arising in totally different situations. I d…
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field. Let $\mathcal{O}_K$ be its ring of integers. Let $k$ be its residue field which we assume to be algebraically closed of characteristic exponent $p\geq1$. Let $G/K$ be a semi-abelian variety. Let $\mathcal{G}/\mathcal{O}_K$ be its Néron model. The special fiber $\mathcal{G}_k/k$ is an extension of the identity component $\mathcal{G}_k^0/k$ by the group of components $Φ(G)$. We say that $G/K$ has split reduction if this extension is split. Whereas $G/K$ has always split reduction if $p=1$ we prove that it is no longer the case if $p>1$ even if $G/K…
We study the behavior of representation varieties of quivers with relations under the operation of node splitting. We show how splitting a node gives a correspondence between certain closed subvarieties of representation varieties for different algebras, which preserves properties like normality or having rational singularities. Furthermore, we describe how the defining equations of such closed subvarieties change under the correspondence. By working in the "relative setting" (splitting one node at a time), we demonstrate that there are many non-hereditary algebras whose irreducible components…
We examine the relationship between the notion of Frobenius splitting and ordinarity for varieties. We show the following: a) The de Rham-Witt cohomology groups $H^i(X, W({\mathcal O}_X))$ of a smooth projective Frobenius split variety are finitely generated over $W(k)$. b) we provide counterexamples to a question of V. B. Mehta that Frobenius split varieties are ordinary or even Hodge-Witt. c) a Kummer $K3$ surface associated to an Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary) if and only if the associated Abelian surface is $F$-split (ordinary). d) for a $K3$-surface defined over a number field, t…
Let $X$ be a hyperkähler variety, and let $G$ be a group of finite order non-symplectic automorphisms of $X$. Beauville's conjectural splitting property predicts that each Chow group of $X$ should split in a finite number of pieces. The Bloch-Beilinson conjectures predict how $G$ should act on these pieces of the Chow groups: certain pieces should be invariant under $G$, while certain other pieces should not contain any non-trivial $G$-invariant cycle. We can prove this for two pieces of the Chow groups when $X$ is the Hilbert scheme of a $K3$ surface and $G$ consists of natural automorphisms.…
We define and construct mixed Hodge structures on real schematic homotopy types of complex projective varieties, giving mixed Hodge structures on their homotopy groups and pro-algebraic fundamental groups. We also show that these split on tensoring with the ring R[x] equipped with the Hodge filtration given by powers of (x-i), giving new results even for simply connected varieties. Thus the mixed Hodge structures can be recovered from cohomology groups of local systems, together with the monodromy action at the Archimedean place. As the basepoint varies, these all become real variations of mix…
We study integral models, so-called Pappas-Rapoport or splitting models, of some PEL Shimura Varieties whose data are ramified at a prime p. We show that except in a specific case, these models are smooth when there is no level at p, and we study their special fiber modulo p. We show that interesting stratifications appear, and we show that the $μ$-ordinary locus is open and dense, following a strategy of Wedhorn in the unramified case.
