Let X be a normed space. A subset A of X is approximately convex if $d(ta+(1-t)b,A) \le 1$ for all $a,b \in A$ and $t \in [0,1]$ where $d(x,A)$ is the distance of $x$ to $A$. Let $\Co(A)$ be the convex hull and $\diam(A)$ the diameter of $A$. We prove that every $n$-dimensional normed space contains approximately convex sets $A$ with $\mathcal{H}(A,\Co(A))\ge \log_2n-1$ and $\diam(A) \le C\sqrt n(\ln n)^2$, where $\mathcal{H}$ denotes the Hausdorff distance. These estimates are reasonably sharp. For every $D>0$, we construct worst possible approximately convex sets in $C[0,1]$ such that $\mathcal{H}(A,\Co(A))=\diam(A)=D$. Several results pertaining to the Hyers-Ulam stability theorem are also proved.
We investigate metric projections and distance functions referring to convex bodies in finite-dimensional normed spaces. For this purpose we identify the vector space with its dual space by using, instead of the usual identification via the standard inner product, the Legendre transform associated with the given norm. This approach yields re-interpretations of various properties of convex functions, and new relations between such functions and geometric properties of the studied norm are also derived.
Inspired in the theorem of Krein-Milamn, we investigate the existence of extreme points in compact convex subsets of asymmetric normed spaces. We focus our attention in the finite dimensional case, giving a geometric description of all compact convex subsets of a finite dimensional asymmetric normed space.
Let X be a real normed vector space and dim X \ge 2. Let d>0 be a fixed real number. We prove that if x,y \in X and ||x-y||/d is a rational number then there exists a finite set {x,y} \subseteq S(x,y) \subseteq X with the following property: for each strictly convex Y of dimension 2 each map from S(x,y) to Y preserving the distance d preserves the distance between x and y. It implies that each map from X to Y that preserves the distance d is an isometry.
Let X be a normed linear space. We examine if every open, convex and unbounded subset of X is equal to the union of a family of open straight half lines. The answer is affirmative if and only if X is finite dimensional.
Based on both the fundamental theorem of affine geometry in regular $L^0$-modules and the recent progress in random convex analysis, this paper characterizes the stable fully order preserving and order reversing operators acting on the class of proper lower semicontinuous $L^0$-convex functions in complete random normed modules.
In this short note, we show by elementary computations that the notion of non-Archimedean fuzzy normed (and 2-normed) spaces is void. Namely, there are no strictly convex spaces at all --not even the zero-dimensional linear space. Before this, we also study the case of strictly convex non-Archimedean normed spaces; in this setting we see that the only nonzero linear space (defined over an arbitrary non-Archimedean field) that satisfies this property is the one-dimensional linear space over $\mathbb{Z}/3\mathbb{Z}$. Consequently, the results that have been proven for this class of spaces, like …
The idea of convex sets and various related results in 2-Probabilistic normed spaces were established in [HR]. In this paper, We obtain the concepts of convex series closedness, convex series compactness, boundedness and their interrelationships in Menger's 2-probabilistic normed space. Finally, the idea of $ \mathcal{D}- $ Boundedness in Menger's 2-probabilistic normed spaces and Menger's Generalized 2-Probabilistic Normed spaces are discussed.
We study the geometric structure of compact convex sets in 2-dimensional asymmetric normed lattices. We prove that every q-compact convex set is strongly q-compact and we give a complete geometric description of the compact convex sets with non empty interior in (R^2, q), where q is an asymmetric lattice norm.
Noting the important role the abstract $L^p$ space has played in the development of random normed modules, in this paper we introduce and study the Orlicz space generated from a random normed module. First, we give a basic dual space representation theorem which identify the dual of the Orlicz heart of a random normed module with the Orlicz space generated from the random conjugate space. Then, we establish the respective equivalence relations of the strict convexity and uniform convexity of this abstract Orlicz space to the random strict convexity and random uniform convexity of the underlyin…
We introduce a concept of approximately invertible elements in non-unital normed algebras which is, on one side, a natural generalization of invertibility when having approximate identities at hand, and, on the other side, it is a direct extension of topological invertibility to non-unital algebras. Basic observations relate approximate invertibility with concepts of topological divisors of zero and density of (modular) ideals. We exemplify approximate invertibility in the group algebra, Wiener algebras, and operator ideals. For Wiener algebras with approximate identities (in particular, for t…
In this note we correct a paper by D. Kang ("On the Mazur-Ulam theorem in non-Archimedean fuzzy anti-2-normed spaces", Filomat, 2017). The research in that paper applies to what the author calls strictly convex spaces. Nevertheless, we prove that this notion is void: there is no single space that satisfies the definition.
We extend Pisier's abstract version of Grothendieck's theorem to general non-locally convex quasi-Banach spaces. We also prove a related result on factoring operators through a Banach space and apply our results to the study of vector-valued inequalities for Sidon sets. We also develop the local theory of (non-locally convex) spaces with duals of weak cotype 2.
We introduce the notion centre of a convex set and study the space of continuous affine functions on a compact convex set with a centre. We show that these spaces are precisely the dual of a base normed space in which the underlying base has a (unique) centre. We also characterize the corresponding base norm space. We obtain a condition on a compact, balanced, convex subset of a locally convex space so that the corresponding space of continuous affine functions on the convex set is an absolute order unit space. Similarly, we characterize a condition on the base with a centre of a base normed s…
In this paper, we present a geometric form of the Hahn-Banach extension theorem for $L^{0}-$linear functions and prove that the geometric form is equivalent to the analytic form of the Hahn-Banach extension theorem. Further, we use the geometric form to give a new proof of a known basic strict separation theorem in random locally convex modules. Finally, using the basic strict separation theorem we establish the Goldstine-Weston theorem in random normed modules under the two kinds of topologies----the $(ε,λ)-$topology and the locally $L^{0}-$convex topology, and also provide a counterexample s…
It is known that any normed vector space which satisfies the parallelogram law is actually an inner product space. For finite dimensional normed vector spaces over R, we formulate an approximate version of this theorem: if a space approximately satisfies the parallelogram law, then it has a near isometry with Euclidean space. In other words, a small von Neumann Jordan constant E + 1 for X yields a small Banach-Mazur distance with R^n, d(X, R^n) < 1 + B_n E + O(E^2). Finally, we examine how this estimate worsens as the dimension, n, of X increases, with the conclusion that B_n grows quadratical…
We give two characterizations of cones over ellipsoids in real normed vector spaces. Let $C$ be a closed convex cone with nonempty interior such that $C$ has a bounded section of codimension $1$. We show that $C$ is a cone over an ellipsoid if and only if every bounded section of $C$ has a center of symmetry. We also show that $C$ is a cone over an ellipsoid if and only if the affine span of $\partial C \cap \partial(a - C)$ has codimension $1$ for every point $a$ in the interior of $C$. These results generalize the finite-dimensional cases proved in (Jerónimo-Castro and McAllister, 2013).
Best approximation (BA) is an interesting field in functional analysis that has attracted a lot of attention from many researchers for a very long period of time up-to-date. Of greatest consideration is the characterization of the Chebyshev set (CS) which is a subset of a normed linear space (NLS) which contains unique BAs. However, a fundamental question remains unsolved to-date regarding the convexity of the CS in infinite NLS known as the CS problem. The question which has not been answered is: Is every CS in a NLS convex?. This question has not got any solution including the simplest form …
The Voronoi diagram is a geometric object which is widely used in many areas. Recently it has been shown that under mild conditions Voronoi diagrams have a certain continuity property: small perturbations of the sites yield small perturbations in the shapes of the corresponding Voronoi cells. However, this result is based on the assumption that the ambient normed space is uniformly convex. Unfortunately, simple counterexamples show that if uniform convexity is removed, then instability can occur. Since Voronoi diagrams in normed spaces which are not uniformly convex do appear in theory and pra…
This article generalize the classical Goldstine-Weston theorem on normed spaces to one on random normed modules: the image of a random normed module $(E,\|\cdot\|)$ under the random natural embedding $J$ is dense in its double random conjugate space $E^{**}$ with respect to the $(ε,λ)$ weak star topology; and $J(E)$ is also dense in $E^{**}$ with respect to the locally $L^{0}$-convex weak star topology if $E$ has the countable concatenation property.
The classical Mazur--Ulam theorem which states that every surjective isometry between real normed spaces is affine is not valid for non-Archimedean normed spaces. In this paper, we establish a Mazur--Ulam theorem in the non-Archimedean strictly convex normed spaces.
We study the existence of cubic quotients of finite-dimensional quasi-normed spaces, that is, quotients well isomorphic to $\ell_{\infty}^k$ for some $k.$ We give two results of this nature. The first guarantees a proportional dimensional cubic quotient when the envelope is cubic; the second gives an estimate for the size of a cubic quotient in terms of a measure of non-convexity of the quasi-norm.
We suggest a concept of generalized `angles' in arbitrary real normed vector spaces. We give for each real number a definition of an `angle' by means of the shape of the unit ball. They all yield the well known Euclidean angle in the special case of real inner product spaces. With these different angles we achieve a classification of normed spaces, and we obtain a characterization of inner product spaces. Finally we consider this construction also for a generalization of normed spaces, i.e. for spaces which may have a non-convex unit ball.
We establish variant Khintchine inequalities on normed spaces of Hanner type and cotype, in which the Rademacher distribution corresponding to classical Khintchine inequality is replaced by general symmetric distributions. The proof involves the $p$-barycenter and Birkhoff's ergodic theorem. More importantly, by employing these Khintchine inequalities, we get some lower bounds for Banach-Mazur distance between $l^p$-ball and a general centrally symmetric convex body.
Angular equivalence is introduced and shown to be an equivalence relation among the norms on a fixed real vector space. It is a finer notion than the usual (topological) notion of norm equivalence. Angularly equivalent norms share certain geometric properties: A norm that is angularly equivalent to a uniformly convex norm is itself uniformly convex. The same is true for strict convexity. Extreme points of the unit balls of angularly equivalent norms occur on the same rays, and if one unit ball is a polyhedron so is the other. Among norms arising from inner products, two norms are angularly equ…
We give a positive answer to the Aleksandrov problem in $n$-normed spaces under the surjectivity assumption. Namely, we show that every surjective mapping preserving $n$-distance one is affine, and thus is an $n$-isometry. This is the first time to solve the Aleksandrov problem in $n$-normed spaces with only surjective assumption even in the usual case $n=2$. Finally, when the target space is $n$-strictly convex, we prove that every mapping preserving two $n$-distances with an integer ratio is an affine $n$-isometry.
In a countably normed space which is a linear space equipped with a countable number of pair-wise compatible norms, we prove the existence of a common nearest point (in all norms) from a point outside a nonempty subset if this subset is compact with respect to all norms. We also prove the uniqueness of that common nearest point if the completion of the space equipped with only one of its norms is uniformly convex.
We prove several results of the following type: given finite dimensional normed space V possessing certain geometric property there exists another space X having the same property and such that (1) log (dim X) = O(log (dim V)) and (2) every subspace of X, whose dimension is not "too small," contains a further well-complemented subspace nearly isometric to V. This sheds new light on the structure of large subspaces or quotients of normed spaces (resp., large sections or linear images of convex bodies) and provides definitive solutions to several problems stated in the 1980s by V. Milman. The pr…
We prove a reconstruction theorem for homeomorphism groups of open sets in metrizable locally convex topological vector spaces. We show that certain small subgroups of the full homeomorphism group obey the conditions of the above theorem.
We prove several results of the following type: given finite dimensional normed space V there exists another space X with log (dim X) = O(log (dim V)) and such that every subspace (or quotient) of X, whose dimension is not "too small," contains a further subspace isometric to V. This sheds new light on the structure of such large subspaces or quotients (resp., large sections or projections of convex bodies) and allows to solve several problems stated in the 1980s by V. Milman. The proofs are probabilistic and depend on careful analysis of images of convex sets under Gaussian linear maps.
Let X, Y be asymmetric normed spaces and Lc(X, Y) the convex cone of all linear continuous operators from X to Y. It is known that in general, Lc(X, Y) is not a vector space. The aim of this note is to prove, using the Baire category theorem, that if Lc(X, Y) is a vector space for some asymmetric normed space Y , then X is isomorphic to its associated normed space (the converse is true for every asymmetric normed space Y and is easy to establish). For this, we introduce an index of symmetry of the space X denoted c(X) $\in$ [0, 1] and we give the link between the index c(X) and the fact that L…
Using a technique of adjoining an order unit to a normed linear space, we have characterized strictly convex spaces among normed linear spaces and Hilbert spaces among strictly convex Banach spaces respectively. This leads to a generalization of spin factors and provides a new class of absolute order unit spaces.
In this note we generalize the well-known Wigner's unitary-anti\-unitary theorem. For $X$ and $Y$ smooth normed spaces and $f:X\to Y$ a surjective mapping such that $|[f(x),f(y)]|=|[x,y]|$, $x,y\in X$, where $[\cdot,\cdot]$ is the unique semi-inner product, we show that $f$ is phase equivalent to either a linear or an anti-linear surjective isometry. When $X$ and $Y$ are smooth real normed spaces and $Y$ strictly convex, we show that Wigner's theorem is equivalent to $\{\|f(x)+f(y)\|,\|f(x)-f(y)\|\}=\{\|x+y\|,\|x-y\|\}$, $x,y\in X$.
It was A. Lambert who discovered a new type of structures, situated, in a sense, between normed spaces and (abstract) operator spaces. His definition was based on the notion of amplification a normed space by means of spaces $\ell_2^n$. Afterwards several mathematicians investigated more general structure, "p-multi-normed space", introduced with the help of spaces $\ell_p^n$; $1\le p\le\infty$. In the present paper we pass from $\ell_p$ to $L_p(X,μ)$ with an arbitrary measure. This happened to be possible in the frame-work of the non-coordinate ("index-free") approach to the notion of amplific…
Theoretically speaking, there are four kinds of possibilities to define the random conjugate space of a random locally convex module. The purpose of this paper is to prove that among the four kinds there are only two which are universally suitable for the current development of the theory of random conjugate spaces: in this process we also obtain a somewhat surprising and crucial result that for a random normed module with base $(Ω,{\cal F},P)$ such that $(Ω,{\cal F},P)$ is nonatomic then the random normed module is a totally disconnected topological space when it is endowed with the locally $…
The tensor product of two ordered vector spaces can be ordered in more than one way, just as the tensor product of normed spaces can be normed in multiple ways. Two natural orderings have received considerable attention in the past, namely the ones given by the projective and injective (or biprojective) cones. This paper aims to show that these two cones behave similarly to their normed counterparts, and furthermore extends the study of these two cones from the algebraic tensor product to completed locally convex tensor products. The main results in this paper are the following: (i) drawing pa…
Several local geometric properties of Orlicz space $L_ϕ$ are presented for an increasing Orlicz function $ϕ$ which is not necessarily convex, and thus $L_ϕ$ does not need to be a Banach space. In addition to monotonicity of $ϕ$ it is supposed that $ϕ(u^{1/p})$ is convex for some $p>0$ which is equivalent to that its lower Matuszewska-Orlicz index $α_ϕ>0$. Such spaces are locally bounded and are equipped with natural quasi-norms. Therefore many local geometric properties typical for Banach spaces can also be studied in those spaces. The techniques however have to be different, since duality the…
One of the oldest and richest problems from continuous location science is the famous Fermat-Torricelli problem, asking for the unique point in Euclidean space that has minimal distance sum to n given (non-collinear) points. Many natural and interesting generalizations of this problem were investigated, e.g., by extending it to non-Euclidean spaces and modifying the used distance functions, or by generalizing the configuration of participating geometric objects. In the present paper, we extend the Fermat-Torricelli problem in a two-fold way: more general than for normed spaces, the unit balls …
A zone diagram is a relatively new concept which has emerged in computational geometry and is related to Voronoi diagrams. Formally, it is a fixed point of a certain mapping, and neither its uniqueness nor its existence are obvious in advance. It has been studied by several authors, starting with T. Asano, J. Matousek and T. Tokuyama, who considered the Euclidean plane with singleton sites, and proved the existence and uniqueness of zone diagrams there. In the present paper we prove the existence of zone diagrams with respect to finitely many pairwise disjoint compact sites contained in a comp…
Let $B_Y$ denote the unit ball of a normed linear space $Y$. A symmetric, bounded, closed, convex set $A$ in a finite dimensional normed linear space $X$ is called a {\it sufficient enlargement} for $X$ if, for an arbitrary isometric embedding of $X$ into a Banach space $Y$, there exists a linear projection $P:Y\to X$ such that $P(B_Y)\subset A$. The main results of the paper: {\bf (1)} Each minimal-volume sufficient enlargement is linearly equivalent to a zonotope spanned by multiples of columns of a totally unimodular matrix. {\bf (2)} If a finite dimensional normed linear space has a minima…
Definition. A symmetric with respect to 0 bounded closed convex set A in a finite dimensional normed space X is called a sufficient enlargement for X (or of B(X)) if for arbitrary isometric embedding of X into a Banach space Y there exists a projection P:Y\to X such that P(B(Y)) is a subset of A (by B(X) we denote the unit ball). The notion of sufficient enlargement is implicit in the paper: B.Grunbaum, Projection constants, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 95 (1960) 451--465. It was explicilty introduced by the author in: M.I.Ostrovskii, Generalization of projection constants: sufficient enlargements,…
We use bicombings on arcwise connected metric spaces to give definitions of convex sets and extremal points. These notions coincide with the customary ones in the classes of normed vector spaces and geodesic metric spaces which are convex in the usual sense. A rather straightforward modification of the standard proof of the Krein-Mil'man Theorem yields the result that in a large class of metric spaces every compact convex set is the closed convex hull of its extremal points. The result appears to be new even for CAT(0)-spaces.
In 2010, Gordan Žitković introduced the notion of convex compactness for a convex subset of a linear topological space and gave some important applications to both nonlinear analysis and mathematical economics in [ Gordan Žitković, Convex compactness and its applications, Math. Finance Econom. 3(1) (2010) 1--12 ]. Motivated by Gordan Žitković's idea, in this paper we introduce the notion of $L^0$--convex compactness for an $L^0$--convex subset of a topological module over the topological algebra $L^0(\mathcal{F},K)$, where $L^0(\mathcal{F},K)$ is the algebra of equivalence classes of random va…
The aim of this paper is to present a survey of some recent results obtained in the study of spaces with asymmetric norm. The presentation follows the ideas from the theory of normed spaces (topology, continuous linear operators, continuous linear functionals, duality, geometry of asymmetric normed spaces, compact operators) emphasizing similarities as well as differences with respect to the classical theory. The main difference comes form the fact that the dual of an asymmetric normed space $X$ is not a linear space, but merely a convex cone in the space of all linear functionals on $X.$ Due …
Two different notions of approximate Birkhoff-James orthogonality in nor\-med linear spaces have been introduced by Dragomir and Chmie\-liń\-ski. In the present paper we consider a global and a local approximate symmetry of the Birkhoff-James orthogonality related to each of the two definitions. We prove that the considered orthogonality is approximately symmetric in the sense of Dragomir in all finite-dimensional Banach spaces. For the other case, we prove that for finite-dimensional polyhedral Banach spaces, the approximate symmetry of the orthogonality is equivalent to some newly introduced…
Let $(B,\|\cdot\|)$ be a Banach space, $(Ω,\mathcal{F},P)$ a probability space and $L^0(\mathcal{F},B)$ the set of equivalence classes of strong random elements (or strongly measurable functions) from $(Ω,\mathcal{F},P)$ to $(B,\|\cdot\|)$. It is well known that $L^0(\mathcal{F},B)$ becomes a complete random normed module, which has played an important role in the process of applications of random normed modules to the theory of Lebesgue--Bochner function spaces and random functional analysis. Let $V$ be a closed convex subset of $B$ and $L^0(\mathcal{F},V)$ the set of equivalence classes of s…
Nonlinear spectral gaps with respect to uniformly convex normed spaces are shown to satisfy a spectral calculus inequality that establishes their decay along Cesaro averages. Nonlinear spectral gaps of graphs are also shown to behave sub-multiplicatively under zigzag products. These results yield a combinatorial construction of super-expanders, i.e., a sequence of 3-regular graphs that does not admit a coarse embedding into any uniformly convex normed space.
