A zone diagram is a relatively new concept which has emerged in computational geometry and is related to Voronoi diagrams. Formally, it is a fixed point of a certain mapping, and neither its uniqueness nor its existence are obvious in advance. It has been studied by several authors, starting with T. Asano, J. Matousek and T. Tokuyama, who considered the Euclidean plane with singleton sites, and proved the existence and uniqueness of zone diagrams there. In the present paper we prove the existence of zone diagrams with respect to finitely many pairwise disjoint compact sites contained in a compact and convex subset of a uniformly convex normed space, provided that either the sites or the convex subset satisfy a certain mild condition. The proof is based on the Schauder fixed point theorem, the Curtis-Schori theorem regarding the Hilbert cube, and on recent results concerning the characterization of Voronoi cells as a collection of line segments and their geometric stability with respect to small changes of the corresponding sites. Along the way we obtain the continuity of the Dom mapping as well as interesting and apparently new properties of Voronoi cells.
We prove various reconstruction theorems about open subsets of normed spaces. E.g. if the uniformly continuous homeomorphism groups of two such sets are isomorphic, then this isomorphism is induced by a uniformly continuous homeomorphism between these open sets.
The Voronoi diagram is a geometric object which is widely used in many areas. Recently it has been shown that under mild conditions Voronoi diagrams have a certain continuity property: small perturbations of the sites yield small perturbations in the shapes of the corresponding Voronoi cells. However, this result is based on the assumption that the ambient normed space is uniformly convex. Unfortunately, simple counterexamples show that if uniform convexity is removed, then instability can occur. Since Voronoi diagrams in normed spaces which are not uniformly convex do appear in theory and pra…
Let $X$ be a real separable normed space $X$ admitting a separating polynomial. We prove that each continuous function from a subset $A$ of $X$ to a real Banach space can be uniformly approximated by restrictions to $A$ of functions which are analytic on open subsets of $X$. Also we prove that each continuous function to a complex Banach space from a complex separable normed space admitting a separating $*$-polynomial can be uniformly approximated by $*$-analytic functions.
In a countably normed space which is a linear space equipped with a countable number of pair-wise compatible norms, we prove the existence of a common nearest point (in all norms) from a point outside a nonempty subset if this subset is compact with respect to all norms. We also prove the uniqueness of that common nearest point if the completion of the space equipped with only one of its norms is uniformly convex.
Angular equivalence is introduced and shown to be an equivalence relation among the norms on a fixed real vector space. It is a finer notion than the usual (topological) notion of norm equivalence. Angularly equivalent norms share certain geometric properties: A norm that is angularly equivalent to a uniformly convex norm is itself uniformly convex. The same is true for strict convexity. Extreme points of the unit balls of angularly equivalent norms occur on the same rays, and if one unit ball is a polyhedron so is the other. Among norms arising from inner products, two norms are angularly equ…
In this paper, we prove that if $E$ is a uniquely remotal subset of a real normed linear space $X$ such that $E$ has a Chebyshev center $c \in X$ and the farthest point map $F:X\rightarrow E$ restricted to $[c,F(c)]$ is partially statistically continuous at $c$, then $E$ is a singleton. We obtain a necessary condition on uniquely remotal subsets of uniformly rotund Banach spaces to be a singleton. Moreover, we show that there exists a remotal set $M$ having a Chebyshev center $c$ such that the farthest point map $F:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow M$ is not continuous at $c$ but is partially statisticall…
We characterise narrow and strong Daugavet operators on $C(K,E)$-spaces; these are in a way the largest sensible classes of operators for which the norm equation $\|Id+T\| = 1+\|T\|$ is valid. For certain separable range spaces $E$ including all finite-dimensional ones and locally uniformly convex ones we show that an unconditionally pointwise convergent sum of narrow operators on $C(K,E)$ is narrow, which implies for instance the known result that these spaces do not have unconditional FDDs. In a different vein, we construct two narrow operators on $C([0,1],\ell_1)$ whose sum is not narrow.
We propose the class of uniformly convex $W$-hyperbolic spaces with monotone modulus of uniform convexity ($UCW$-hyperbolic spaces for short) as an appropriate setting for the study of nonexpansive iterations. $UCW$-hyperbolic spaces are a natural generalization both of uniformly convex normed spaces and CAT(0)-spaces. Furthermore, we apply proof mining techniques to get effective rates of asymptotic regularity for Ishikawa iterations of nonexpansive self-mappings of closed convex subsets in $UCW$-hyperbolic spaces. These effective results are new even for uniformly convex Banach spaces.
Nonlinear spectral gaps with respect to uniformly convex normed spaces are shown to satisfy a spectral calculus inequality that establishes their decay along Cesaro averages. Nonlinear spectral gaps of graphs are also shown to behave sub-multiplicatively under zigzag products. These results yield a combinatorial construction of super-expanders, i.e., a sequence of 3-regular graphs that does not admit a coarse embedding into any uniformly convex normed space.
The paper deals with the interplay between boundedness, order and ring structures in function lattices on the line and related metric spaces. It is shown that the lattice of all Lipschitz functions on a normed space $E$ is isomorphic to its sublattice of bounded functions if and only if $E$ has dimension one. The lattice of Lipschitz functions on $E$ carries a "hidden" $f$-ring structure with a unit, and the same happens to the (larger) lattice of all uniformly continuous functions for a wide variety of metric spaces. An example of a metric space whose lattice of uniformly continuous functions…
The main aim of this paper is to prove a Bishop-Phelps-Bollobás type theorem on the unital uniform algebra A_{w^*u}(B_{X^*}) consisting of all w^*-uniformly continuous functions on the closed unit ball B_{X^*} which are holomorphic on the interior of B_{X^*}. We show that this result holds for A_{w^*u}(B_{X^*}) if X^* is uniformly convex or X^* is the uniformly complex convex dual space of an order continuous absolute normed space. The vector-valued case is also studied.
We study star-finite coverings of infinite-dimensional normed spaces. A family of sets is called star-finite if each of its members intersects only finitely many other members of the family. It follows by our results that an LUR or a uniformly Fréchet smooth infinite-dimensional Banach space does not admit star-finite coverings by closed balls. On the other hand, we present a quite involved construction proving existence of a star-finite covering of $c_0(Γ)$ by Fréchet smooth centrally symmetric bounded convex bodies. A similar but simpler construction shows that every normed space of countabl…
Classical objects in computational geometry are defined by explicit relations. Several years ago the pioneering works of T. Asano, J. Matousek and T. Tokuyama introduced "implicit computational geometry", in which the geometric objects are defined by implicit relations involving sets. An important member in this family is called "a zone diagram". The implicit nature of zone diagrams implies, as already observed in the original works, that their computation is a challenging task. In a continuous setting this task has been addressed (briefly) only by these authors in the Euclidean plane with poi…
The well-known von Bahr--Esseen bound on the absolute $p$th moments of martingales with $p\in(1,2]$ is extended to a large class of moment functions, and now with a best possible constant factor (which depends on the moment function). This result appears to be new even for the power moments. As an application, measure concentration inequalities for separately Lipschitz functions on product spaces are obtained. Relations with $p$-uniformly smooth and $q$-uniformly convex normed spaces are discussed.
Let $(Ω,{\cal F},P)$ be a probability space and $L^{0}({\cal F},R)$ the algebra of equivalence classes of real-valued random variables on $(Ω,{\cal F},P)$. When $L^{0}({\cal F},R)$ is endowed with the topology of convergence in probability, we prove an intermediate value theorem for a continuous local function from $L^{0}({\cal F},R)$ to $L^{0}({\cal F},R)$. As applications of this theorem, we first give several useful expressions for modulus of random convexity, then we prove that a complete random normed module $(S,\|\cdot\|)$ is random uniformly convex iff $L^{p}(S)$ is uniformly convex for…
We give a rate of metastability for Halpern's iteration relative to a rate of metastability for the resolvent for nonexpansive mappings in uniformly smooth Banach spaces, extracted from a proof due to Xu. In Hilbert space, the latter is known, so we get an explicit rate of metastability. We also extract a rate of asymptotic regularity for general normed spaces. Such rates have already been extracted by Kohlenbach and Leuştean for different and incomparable conditions on $(λ_n)$. The proof analyzed in this paper is also more effective than the proofs treated by Kohlenbach and Leuştean in that i…

We say that a smooth normed space $X$ has a property (SL), if every mapping $f:X \to X$ preserving the semi-inner product on $X$ is linear. It is well known that every Hilbert space has the property (SL) and the same is true for every finite-dimensional smooth normed space. In this paper, we establish several new results concerning the property (SL). We give a simple example of a smooth and strictly convex Banach space which is isomorphic to the space $\ell_p$, but without the property (SL). Moreover, we provide a characterization of the property (SL) in the class of reflexive smooth Banach sp…
Given an open subset $Ω$ of a Banach space and a Lipschitz function $u_0: \overlineΩ \to \mathbb{R},$ we study whether it is possible to approximate $u_0$ uniformly on $Ω$ by $C^k$-smooth Lipschitz functions which coincide with $u_0$ on the boundary $\partial Ω$ of $Ω$ and have the same Lipschitz constant as $u_0.$ As a consequence, we show that every $1$-Lipschitz function $u_0: \overlineΩ \to \mathbb{R},$ defined on the closure $\overlineΩ$ of an open subset $Ω$ of a finite dimensional normed space of dimension $n \geq 2$, and such that the Lipschitz constant of the restriction of $u_0$ to t…
Voronoi diagrams appear in many areas in science and technology and have numerous applications. They have been the subject of extensive investigation during the last decades. Roughly speaking, they are a certain decomposition of a given space into cells, induced by a distance function and by a tuple of subsets called the generators or the sites. Consider the following question: does a small change of the sites, e.g., of their position or shape, yield a small change in the corresponding Voronoi cells? This question is by all means natural and fundamental, since in practice one approximates the …
