Definition. A symmetric with respect to 0 bounded closed convex set A in a finite dimensional normed space X is called a sufficient enlargement for X (or of B(X)) if for arbitrary isometric embedding of X into a Banach space Y there exists a projection P:Y\to X such that P(B(Y)) is a subset of A (by B(X) we denote the unit ball).
The notion of sufficient enlargement is implicit in the paper: B.Grunbaum, Projection constants, Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 95 (1960) 451--465. It was explicilty introduced by the author in: M.I.Ostrovskii, Generalization of projection constants: sufficient enlargements, Extracta Math., 11 (1996), 466--474.
The main purpose of the present paper is to continue investigation of sufficient enlargements started in the papers cited above. In particular the author investigate sufficient enlargements whose support functions are in some directions close to those of the unit ball of the space, sufficient enlargements of minimal volume, sufficient enlargements for euclidean spaces.
Let $B_Y$ denote the unit ball of a normed linear space $Y$. A symmetric, bounded, closed, convex set $A$ in a finite dimensional normed linear space $X$ is called a {\it sufficient enlargement} for $X$ if, for an arbitrary isometric embedding of $X$ into a Banach space $Y$, there exists a linear projection $P:Y\to X$ such that $P(B_Y)\subset A$. The main results of the paper: {\bf (1)} Each minimal-volume sufficient enlargement is linearly equivalent to a zonotope spanned by multiples of columns of a totally unimodular matrix. {\bf (2)} If a finite dimensional normed linear space has a minima…
Each finite dimensional normed space has a minimal-volume sufficient enlargement which is a parallelepiped, some spaces have "exotic" minimal-volume sufficient enlargements. The main result of the paper is a characterization of spaces having "exotic" …
We investigate metric projections and distance functions referring to convex bodies in finite-dimensional normed spaces. For this purpose we identify the vector space with its dual space by using, instead of the usual identification via the standard inner product, the Legendre transform associated with the given norm. This approach yields re-interpretations of various properties of convex functions, and new relations between such functions and geometric properties of the studied norm are also derived.
The \emph{relative projection constant} $λ(Y, X)$ of normed spaces $Y \subset X$ is defined as $λ(Y, X) = \inf \{ ||P|| : P \in \mathcal{P}(X, Y) \}$, where $\mathcal{P}(X, Y)$ denotes the set of all continuous projections from $X$ onto $Y$. By the well-known result of Bohnenblust for every $n$-dimensional normed space $X$ and its subspace $Y$ of codimension $1$ the inequality $λ(Y, X) \leq 2 - \frac{2}{n}$ holds. The main goal of the paper is to study the equality case in the theorem of Bohnenblust. We establish an equivalent condition for the equality $λ(Y, X) = 2 - \frac{2}{n}$ and present …
Let $X$ be a finite-dimensional normed space and let $Y \subseteq X$ be its proper linear subspace. The set of all minimal projections from $X$ to $Y$ is a convex subset of the space all linear operators from $X$ to $X$ and we can consider its affine dimension. We establish several results on the possible values of this dimension. We prove optimal upper bounds in terms of the dimensions of $X$ and $Y$. Moreover, we improve these estimates in the polyhedral normed spaces for an open and dense subset of subspaces of the given dimension. As a consequence, in the polyhedral normed spaces a minimal…
Motivated by the questions in the theory of Fredholm stability in Banach space and Kato's strictly singular operators we answer several natural questions concerning ``orthogonality'' in normed spaces and the properties of metric projections. What the reader will see below might have benn known long ago, but we did not find it in the literature. Some open (for us) questions are formulated at the end of Sections 7 and 9.
We prove several results of the following type: given finite dimensional normed space V there exists another space X with log (dim X) = O(log (dim V)) and such that every subspace (or quotient) of X, whose dimension is not "too small," contains a further subspace isometric to V. This sheds new light on the structure of such large subspaces or quotients (resp., large sections or projections of convex bodies) and allows to solve several problems stated in the 1980s by V. Milman. The proofs are probabilistic and depend on careful analysis of images of convex sets under Gaussian linear maps.
The main goal of the paper is to provide a quantitative lower bound greater than $1$ for the relative projection constant $λ(Y, X)$, where $X$ is a subspace of $\ell_{2p}^m$ space and $Y \subset X$ is an arbitrary hyperplane. As a consequence, we establish that for every integer $n \geq 4$ there exists an $n$-dimensional normed space $X$ such that for an every hyperplane $Y$ and every projection $P:X \to Y$ the inequality $||P|| > 1 + \left (8 \left ( n + 3 \right )^{5} \right )^{-30(n+3)^2}$ holds. This gives a non-trivial lower bound in a variation of problem proposed by Bosznay and Garay in…
We describe absolutely ordered $p$-normed spaces, for $1 \le p \le \infty$ which presents a model for "non-commutative" vector lattices and includes order theoretic orthogonality. To demonstrate its relevance, we introduce the notion of {\it absolute compatibility} among positive elements in absolute order unit spaces and relate it to symmetrized product in the case of a C$^{\ast}$-algebra. In the latter case, whenever one of the elements is a projection, the elements are absolutely compatible if and only if they commute. We develop an order theoretic prototype of the results. For this purpose…
Let $K$ be a centrally symmetric spherical and simplicial polytope, whose vertices form a $\frac{1}{4n}-$net in the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^n$. We prove a uniform lower bound on the norms of all hyperplane projections $P: X \to X$, where $X$ is the $n$-dimensional normed space with the unit ball $K$. The estimate is given in terms of the determinant function of vertices and faces of $K$. In particular, if $N \geq n^{4n}$ and $K = \conv \{ \pm x_1, \pm x_2, \ldots, \pm x_N \}$, where $x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_N$ are independent random points distributed uniformly in the unit sphere, then every hy…
