We are concerned with mapping class groups of surfaces with nonempty boundary. We present a very natural method, due to Thurston, of finding many different left orderings of such groups. The construction involves equipping the surface with a hyperbolic structure, embedding the universal cover in the hyperbolic plane, and extending the action of the mapping class group on it to its limit points on the circle at infinity. We classify all orderings of braid groups which arise in this way. Moreover, restricting to a certain class of ``nonpathological'' orderings, we prove that there are only finitely many conjugacy classes of such orderings.
We obtain an ordering of closed aspherical 4-manifolds that carry a non-hyperbolic Thurston geometry. As application, we derive that the Kodaira dimension of geometric 4-manifolds is monotone with respect to the existence of maps of non-zero degree.
In this article, we propose two algorithms for determining the Nielsen-Thurston classification of a mapping class $ψ$ on a surface $S$. We start with a finite generating set $X$ for the mapping class group and a word $ψ$ in $\langle X \rangle$. We show that if $ψ$ represents a reducible mapping class in $\Mod(S)$ then $ψ$ admits a canonical reduction system whose total length is exponential in the word length of $ψ$. We use this fact to find the canonical reduction system of $ψ$. We also prove an effective conjugacy separability result for $π_1(S)$ which allows us to lift the action of $ψ$ to …
We find a constructive bound for the word length of a generating set for the centralizer of an element of the Mapping Class Group. As a consequence, we show that it is algorithmically decidable whether two postcritically finite branched coverings of the sphere are Thurston equivalent.
We study the action of the mapping class group on the real homology of finite covers of a topological surface. We use the homological representation of the mapping class to construct a faithful infinite-dimensional representation of the mapping class group. We show that this representation detects the Nielsen-Thurston classification of each mapping class. We then discuss some examples that occur in the theory of braid groups and develop an analogous theory for automorphisms of free groups. We close with some open problems.
We show that the Teichmüller space of a surface without boundary and with punctures, equipped with Thurston's metric is the limit (in an appropriate sense) of Teichmüller spaces of surfaces with boundary, equipped with their arc metrics, when the boundary lengths tend to zero. We use this to obtain a result on the translation distances for mapping classes for their actions on Teichmüller spaces equipped with their arc metrics.
In this note we discuss the behavior of the Gromov boundaries and limit sets for the surface subgroups of the mapping class group with accidental parabolics constructed by the author and A. Reid in earlier work. Specifically, we show that generically there are no Cannon--Thurston maps from the Gromov boundary to Thurston's boundary of Teichmuller space.
Let S be a compact, connected, orientable surface of positive genus. Let HT(S) be the Hatcher-Thurston complex of S. We prove that Aut(HT(S)) is isomorphic to the extended mapping class group of S modulo its center.
We study the action of the elements of the mapping class group of a surface of finite type on the Teichmüller space of that surface equipped with Thurston's asymmetric metric. We classify such actions as elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic and pseudo-hyperbolic, depending on whether the translation distance of such an element is zero or positive and whether the value of this translation distance is attained or not, and we relate these four types to Thurston's classification of mapping classes. The study is parallel to the one made by Bers in the setting of Teichmüller space equipped with Teichmüll…
Let $S$ be an infinite-type surface and $p\in S$. We show that the Thurston-Veech construction for pseudo-Anosov elements, adapted for infinite-type surfaces, produces infinitely many loxodromic elements for the action of $Mod(S;p)$ on the loop graph $L(S;p)$ that do not leave any finite-type subsurface $S'\subset S$ invariant. Moreover, in the language of Bavard-Walker, Thurston-Veech's construction produces loxodromic elements of any weight. As a consequence of Bavard and Walker's work, any subgroup of $Mod(S;p)$ containing two "Thurston-Veech loxodromics" of different weight has an infinite…
We show that the Nielsen-Thurston classification of mapping classes of the sphere with four marked points is determined by the quantum SU(n)-representations, for any fixed integer $n \geq 2$. In the Pseudo-Anosov case we also show that the stretching factor is a limit of eigenvalues of (non-unitary) SU(2)-TQFT representation matrices. It follows that at big enough levels, Pseudo-Anosov mapping classes are represented by matrices of infinite order.
Thurston obtained a classification of individual surface homeomorphisms via the dynamics of the corresponding mapping class elements on Teichmüller space. In this paper we present certain extended versions of this, first, to random products of homeomorphisms and second, to holomorphic self-maps of Teichmüller spaces.
Let $X_0$ be a complete borderless infinite area hyperbolic surface. We introduce Thurston's boundary to the Teichmüller space $T(X_0)$ of the surface $X_0$ using Liouville (geodesic) currents. Thurston's boundary to $T(X_0)$ is identified with the space $PML_{bdd}(X_0)$ of projective bounded measured laminations on $X_0$ which naturally extends Thurston's result for closed surfaces. Moreover, the quasiconformal mapping class group $MCG_{qc}(X_0)$ acts continuously on the closure $T(X_0)\cup PML_{bdd}(X_0)$.
We consider an oriented surface S and a cellular complex X of curves on S, defined by Hatcher and Thurston in 1980. We prove by elementary means, without Cerf theory, that the complex X is connected and simply connected. From this we derive an explicit simple presentation of the mapping class group of S, following the ideas of Hatcher-Thurston and Harer.
We classify elements of a cluster modular group into three types. We characterize them in terms of fixed point property of the action on the tropical compactifications associated with the corresponding cluster ensemble. The characterization gives an analogue of the Nielsen-Thurston classification theory on the mapping class group of a surface.
The theme of this survey is that subgroups of the mapping class group of a finite type surface S can be studied via the geometric/dynamical properties of their action on the Thurston compactification of the Teichmuller space of S, just as discrete subgroups of the isometries of hyperbolic space can be studied via their action on compactified hyperbolic space.
We give a short proof of Masbaum and Reid's result that mapping class groups involve any finite group, appealing to free quotients of surface groups and a result of Gilman, following Dunfield-Thurston.
This paper has three parts. The first part is a general introduction to rigidity and to rigid actions of mapping class group actions on various spaces. In the second part, we describe in detail four rigidity results that concern actions of mapping class groups on spaces of foliations and of laminations, namely, Thurston's sphere of projective foliations equipped with its projective piecewise-linear structure, the space of unmeasured foliations equipped with the quotient topology, the reduced Bers boundary, and the space of geodesic laminations equipped with the Thurston topology. In the third …
Let $Γ$ be a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group $MCG(Σ)$ of a closed orientable surface $Σ$, possibly with punctures. We give a precise condition (in terms of the Nielsen-Thurston decomposition) when an element $g\inΓ$ has positive stable commutator length. In addition, we show that in these situations the stable commutator length, if nonzero, is uniformly bounded away from 0. The method works for certain subgroups of infinite index as well and we show $scl$ is uniformly positive on the nontrivial elements of the Torelli group. The proofs use our earlier construction in the paper…
A measured laminations on the universal hyperbolic solenoid $§$ is, by our definition, a leafwise measured lamination with appropriate continuity for the transverse variations. An earthquakes on theuniversal hyperbolic solenoid $§$ is uniquely determined by a measured lamination on $§$; it is a leafwise earthquake with the leafwise earthquake measure equal to the leafwise measured lamination. Leafwise earthquakes fit together to produce a new hyperbolic metric on $§$ which is transversely continuous and we show that any two hyperbolic metrics on $§$ are connected by an earthquake. We also esta…
Using the works of Gervais, Harer, Hatcher and Thurston and others, we show that the mapping class group of a compact orientable surface has a presentation so that the generators are the set of all Dehn twists and the relations are supported in subsurfaces homeomorphic to the one-holed torus or the four-holed sphere. It turns out that all the relations were discovered by Dehn in 1938.
We give a short and elementary proof of the non-realizability of the mapping class group via homeomorphisms. This was originally established by Markovic, resolving a conjecture of Thurston. With the tools established in this paper, we also obtain some rigidity results for actions of the mapping class group on Euclidean spaces.
S. Gervais gave a finite presentation for the mapping class group of a surface (math.GT/9811162). We show this presentation without using Wajnryb's simple presentation. We use a complex of curves defined by Harvey, in place of Hatcher and Thurston's complex.
We prove the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for mapping class groups. The proof uses the Masur-Minsky theory of the large scale geometry of mapping class groups and the geometry of the thick part of Teichmueller space. The proof is presented in an axiomatic setup, extending the projection axioms of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara. More specifically, we prove that the action of the mapping class group on the Thurston compactification of Teichmueller space is finitely F-amenable for the family F consisting of virtual point stabilizers.
Based on the action of the mapping class group on the space of measured foliations, we construct a new boundary of the mapping class group and study the structure of this boundary. As an application, for any point in Teichmuller space, we consider the orbit of this point under the action of the mapping class group and describe the closure of this orbit in the Thurston compactification and the Gardiner-Masur compactification of Teichmuller space. We also construct some new points in the Gardiner-Masur boundary of Teichmuller space.
We develop a theory of convex cocompact subgroups of the mapping class group MCG of a closed, oriented surface S of genus at least 2, in terms of the action on Teichmuller space. Given a subgroup G of MCG defining an extension L_G: 1--> pi_1(S) --> L_G --> G -->1 we prove that if L_G is a word hyperbolic group then G is a convex cocompact subgroup of MCG. When G is free and convex cocompact, called a "Schottky subgroup" of MCG, the converse is true as well; a semidirect product of pi_1(S) by a free group G is therefore word hyperbolic if and only if G is a Schottky subgroup of MCG. The special…
Let $M$ be a closed surface. By $\Homeo(M)$ we denote the group of orientation preserving homeomorphisms of $M$ and let $\MC(M)$ denote the Mapping class group. In this paper we complete the proof of the conjecture of Thurston that says that for any closed surface $M$ of genus $\g \ge 2$, there is no homomorphic section $\E:\MC(M) \to \Homeo(M)$ of the standard projection map $\Proj:\Homeo(M) \to \MC(M)$.
We define and discuss a notion called fibered commensurability of outer automorphisms of free groups. This notion lets us study symmetry of outer automorphisms. The notion of fibered commensurability is first defined by Calegari-Sun-Wang on mapping class groups. The Nielsen-Thurston type of mapping classes is a commensurability invariant. One of the important facts of fibered commensurability on mapping class groups is for the case of pseudo-Anosovs, there is a unique minimal element in each fibered commensurability class. For outer automorphisms, we first show that being atoroidal and fully i…

The action of the mapping class group of a surface on the collection of homotopy classes of disjointly embedded curves or arcs in the surface is discussed here as a tool for understanding Riemann's moduli space and its topological and geometric invariants. Furthermore, appropriate completions, elaborations, or quotients of the set of all such homotopy classes of curves or arcs give for instance Thurston's boundary for Teichmüller space or a combinatorial description of moduli space in terms of fatgraphs. Related open problems and questions are discussed.
Every pseudo-Anosov mapping class $φ$ defines an associated veering triangulation $τ_φ$ of a punctured mapping torus. We show that generically, $τ_φ$ is not geometric. Here, the word "generic" can be taken either with respect to random walks in mapping class groups or with respect to counting geodesics in moduli space. Tools in the proof include Teichmüller theory, the Ending Lamination Theorem, study of the Thurston norm, and rigorous computation.
We prove a law of large numbers for the volumes of families of random hyperbolic mapping tori and Heegaard splittings providing a sharp answer to a conjecture of Dunfield and Thurston.
For any pseudo-Anosov diffeomorphism on a closed orientable surface $S$ of genus greater than one, it is known by the work of Bers and Thurston that the topological entropy agrees with the translation distance on the Teichmüller space with respect to the Teichmüller metric. In this paper, we consider random walks on the mapping class group of $S$. The drift of a random walk is defined as the translation distance of the random walk. We define the topological entropy of a random walk and prove that it almost surely agrees with the drift on the Teichmüller space with respect to the Teichmüller me…
About a decade ago Thurston proved that a vast collection of 3-manifolds carry metrics of constant negative curvature. These manifolds are thus elements of {\em hyperbolic geometry}, as natural as Euclid's regular polyhedra. For a closed manifold, Mostow rigidity assures that a hyperbolic structure is unique when it exists, so topology and geometry mesh harmoniously in dimension 3. This remarkable theorem applies to all 3-manifolds, which can be built up in an inductive way from 3-balls, i.e., {\em Haken} manifolds. Thurston's construction of a hyperbolic structure is also inductive. At the in…
This is a draft of a book submitted for publication by the AMS. Its theme is the remarkable interplay, accelerating in the last few decades, between topology and the theory of orderable groups, with applications in both directions. It begins with an introduction to orderable groups and their algebraic properties. Many of the algebraic results are proved by topological methods, via consideration of the space of orderings. After a discussion Hölder's theorem and some dynamical aspects of orderable groups, we provide explicit orderings of important groups in topology: free groups and most surface…
Using a similar algorithm to Hatcher-Thurston's algorithm for finding a presentation of the mapping class group of a surface, Wajnryb succeeded to find a presentation for the handlebody group. This is long and complicated. In this note I simplify Wajnryb's presentation for the handlebody group of genus g = 2.
In this article we study the space of left- and bi-invariant orderings on a torsion-free nilpotent group $G$. We will show that generally the set of such orderings is equipped with a faithful action of the automorphism group of $G$. We prove a result which allows us to establish the same conclusion when $G$ is assumed to be merely residually torsion-free nilpotent. In particular, we obtain faithful actions of mapping class groups of surfaces. We will draw connections between the structure of orderings on residually torsion-free nilpotent, hyperbolic groups and their Gromov boundaries, and we s…
We show that the action of the mapping class group on the space of closed curves of a closed surface effectively tracks the corresponding action on Teichmüller space in the following sense: for all but quantitatively few mapping classes, the information of how a mapping class moves a given point of Teichmüller space determines, up to a power saving error term, how it changes the geometric intersection numbers of a given closed curve with respect to arbitrary geodesic currents. Applications include an effective estimate describing the speed of convergence of Teichmüller geodesic rays to the bou…
We analyze the mapping class group of extendible automorphisms of the exterior boundary W of a compression body of dimension 3 or 4, which extend over the compression body (Q,V), where V is the interior boundary. Those that extend as automorphisms of (Q,V) rel V are called discrepant automorphisms, forming the mapping class group of discrepant automorphisms of W in Q. We describe a short exact sequence of these mapping class groups. For an orientable, compact, reducible 3 manifold W, there is a canonical "maximal" 4-dimensional compression body Q whose exterior boundary is W and whose interior…
We consider a quotient space of the Bers boundary of Teichmüller space, which we call the reduced Bers boundary, by collapsing each quasi-conformal deformation space into a point. This reduced Bers boundary turns out to be independent of the basepoint, and the action of the mapping class group on the Teichmüller space extends continuously to this boundary. We show that every auto-homeomorphism on the reduced Bers boundary comes from an extended mapping class. We also give a way to determine the limit in the reduced Bers boundary up to some ambiguity for parabolic curves for a given sequence in…
The braided Thompson group $\mathcal B$ is an asymptotic mapping class group of a sphere punctured along the standard Cantor set, endowed with a rigid structure. Inspired from the case of finite type surfaces we consider a Hatcher-Thurston cell complex whose vertices are asymptotically trivial pants decompositions. We prove that the automorphism group $\hat{\mathcal B^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ of this complex is also an asymptotic mapping class group in a weaker sense. Moreover $\hat{\mathcal B^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ is obtained by $\mathcal B$ by first adding new elements called half-twists and further comple…
We study random elements of subgroups (and cosets) of the mapping class group of a closed hyperbolic surface, in part through the properties of their mapping tori. In particular, we study the distribution of the homology of the mapping torus (with rational, integer, and finite field coefficients, the hyperbolic volume (whenever the manifold is hyperbolic), the dilatation of the monodromy, the injectivity radius, and the bottom eigenvalue of the Laplacian on these mapping tori. We also study mapping tori of punctured surface bundles, and various invariants of their Dehn fillings. We also study …
We prove a quantitative estimate with a power saving error term for the number of filling closed geodesics of a given topological type and length $\leq L$ on an arbitrary closed, orientable, negatively curved surface. More generally, we prove estimates of the same kind for the number of free homotopy classes of filling closed curves of a given topological type on a closed, orientable surface whose geometric intersection number with respect to a given filling geodesic current is $\leq L$. The proofs rely on recent progress made on the study of the effective dynamics of the mapping class group o…
Dilation surfaces, or twisted quadratic differentials, are variants of translation surfaces. In this paper, we study the question of what elements or subgroups of the mapping class group can be realized as affine automorphisms of dilation surfaces. We show that dilation surfaces can have exotic Dehn twists in their affine automorphism groups and will establish that only certain types of mapping class group elements can arise as affine automorphisms of dilation surfaces. We also generalize a construction of Thurston that constructs a translation surface from a pair of filling multicurves to dil…
