Dilation surfaces, or twisted quadratic differentials, are variants of translation surfaces. In this paper, we study the question of what elements or subgroups of the mapping class group can be realized as affine automorphisms of dilation surfaces. We show that dilation surfaces can have exotic Dehn twists in their affine automorphism groups and will establish that only certain types of mapping class group elements can arise as affine automorphisms of dilation surfaces. We also generalize a construction of Thurston that constructs a translation surface from a pair of filling multicurves to dilation surfaces. This construction will give us dilation surfaces that realize a pair of Dehn multitwists in their affine automorphism groups.
Dilation surfaces are generalizations of translation surfaces where the transition maps of the atlas are translations and homotheties with a positive ratio. In contrast with translation surfaces, the directional flow on dilation surfaces may contain trajectories accumulating on a limit cycle. Such a limit cycle is called hyperbolic because it induces a nontrivial homothety. It has been conjectured that a dilation surface with no actual hyperbolic closed geodesic is in fact a translation surface. Assuming that a dilation surface contains a horizon saddle connection, we prove that the directions…
Dilation surfaces are generalizations of translation surfaces where the geometric structure is modelled on the complex plane up to affine maps whose linear part is real. They are the geometric framework to study suspensions of affine interval exchange maps. However, though the $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-action is ergodic in connected components of strata of translation surfaces, there may be mutually disjoint $SL(2,\mathbb{R})$-invariant open subsets in components of dilation surfaces. A first distinction is between triangulable and non-triangulable dilation surfaces. For non-triangulable surfaces, th…
We construct moduli spaces of complex affine and dilation surfaces. Using ideas of Veech, we show that the the moduli space of affine surfaces with fixed genus and with cone points of fixed complex order is a holomorphic affine bundle over the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. Similarly, the moduli space of dilation surfaces is a covering space of the moduli space of Riemann surfaces. We classify the connected components of the moduli space of dilation surfaces and show that any component is an orbifold K(G,1) where G is the framed mapping class group of Calderon-Salter.
In this paper we consider the symmetries of triangulable half-dilation structures on the sphere with four singularities. We show that all such surfaces can be produced by a tetrahedral construction. Using this construction, we calculate each such surface's symmetry group in $\operatorname{PSL}(2, \mathbb{R})$ called the Veech group.
This text is an introduction to dilation surfaces. We attempt to expose some geometric and dynamical aspects of the subject: moduli spaces, directional foliations and the Teichmüller flow.
Let $ \text{Mod}(S_g)$ denote the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$, and let $f\in \text{Mod}(S_g)$ be of finite order. We give an inductive procedure to construct an explicit hyperbolic structure on $S_g$ that realizes $f$ as an isometry. In other words, this procedure yields an explicit solution to the Nielsen realization problem for cyclic subgroups of $ \text{Mod}(S_g)$. Furthermore, we give a purely combinatorial perspective by showing how certain finite order mapping classes can be viewed as fat graph automorphisms. As an application of our rea…
We consider surface branch data with base surface the sphere, odd degree d, three branching points, and two partitions of d of the form (2,...,2,1) and (2,...,2,2h+1). If the third partition has length L, this datum satisfies the Riemann-Hurwitz necessary condition for realizability if h-L is odd and at least -1. For several small values of h and L (namely, for h+L<6) we explicitly compute the number n of realizations of the datum up to the equivalence relation given by the action of automorphisms (even unoriented ones) of both the base and the covering surface. The expression of n depends on …
Given a finite subgroup G of the mapping class group of a surface S, the Nielsen realization problem asks whether G can be realized as a finite group of homeomorphisms of S. In 1983, Kerckhoff showed that for S a finite-type surface, any finite subgroup G may be realized as a group of isometries of some hyperbolic metric on S. We extend Kerckhoff's result to orientable, infinite-type surfaces. As applications, we classify torsion elements in the mapping class group of the plane minus a Cantor set, and also show that topological groups containing sequences of torsion elements limiting to the id…
Let $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$ denote the mapping class group of the closed orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\geq 2$. Given a finite subgroup $H$ of $\mathrm{Mod}(S_g)$, let $\mathrm{Fix}(H)$ denote the set of fixed points induced by the action of $H$ on the Teichmüller space $\mathrm{Teich}(S_g)$. When $H$ is cyclic with $|H| \geq 3$, we show that $\mathrm{Fix}(H)$ admits a decomposition as a product of two-dimensional strips at least one of which is of bounded width. For an arbitrary $H$ with at least one generator of order $\geq 3$, we derive a computable optimal upper bound for the restriction…

The Nielsen Realization problem asks when the group homomorphism from Diff(M) to pi_0 Diff(M) admits a section. For M a closed surface, Kerckhoff proved that a section exists over any finite subgroup, but Morita proved that if the genus is large enough then no section exists over the entire mapping class group. We prove the first nonexistence theorem of this type in dimension 4: if M is a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold which contains a K3 surface as a connected summand then no section exists over the whole of the mapping class group. This is done by showing that certain obstructions lying i…
The smooth (resp. metric and complex) Nielsen Realization Problem for K3 surfaces $M$ asks: when can a finite group $G$ of mapping classes of $M$ be realized by a finite group of diffeomorphisms (resp. isometries of a Ricci-flat metric, or automorphisms of a complex structure)? We solve the metric and complex versions of Nielsen Realization, and we solve the smooth version almost completely for involutions. Unlike the case of $2$-manifolds, some $G$ are realizable and some are not, and the answer depends on the category of structure preserved. In particular, Dehn twists are not realizable by f…

In this note, we prove that the compactly supported mapping class group of a surface containing a genus $3$ subsurface has no realization as a subgroup of the homeomorphism group. We also prove that for certain surfaces with order $6$ symmetries, their mapping class groups have no realization as a subgroup of the homeomorphism group. Examples of such surfaces include the plane minus a Cantor set and the sphere minus a Cantor set.
