We develop a theory of convex cocompact subgroups of the mapping class group MCG of a closed, oriented surface S of genus at least 2, in terms of the action on Teichmuller space. Given a subgroup G of MCG defining an extension L_G:
1--> pi_1(S) --> L_G --> G -->1 we prove that if L_G is a word hyperbolic group then G is a convex cocompact subgroup of MCG. When G is free and convex cocompact, called a "Schottky subgroup" of MCG, the converse is true as well; a semidirect product of pi_1(S) by a free group G is therefore word hyperbolic if and only if G is a Schottky subgroup of MCG. The special case when G=Z follows from Thurston's hyperbolization theorem. Schottky subgroups exist in abundance: sufficiently high powers of any independent set of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes freely generate a Schottky subgroup.
Reid asked whether all convex-cocompact subgroups of mapping class groups are separable. Using a construction of Manning-Mj-Sageev, we give examples of separable convex-cocompact subgroups that are free of arbitrary finite rank, while prior examples seem to all be virtually cyclic.
A Kleinian group $Γ< \mathrm{Isom}(\mathbb H^3)$ is called convex cocompact if any orbit of $Γ$ in $\mathbb H^3$ is quasiconvex or, equivalently, $Γ$ acts cocompactly on the convex hull of its limit set in $\partial \mathbb H^3$. Subgroup stability is a strong quasiconvexity condition in finitely generated groups which is intrinsic to the geometry of the ambient group and generalizes the classical quasiconvexity condition above. Importantly, it coincides with quasiconvexity in hyperbolic groups and convex cocompactness in mapping class groups. Using the Morse boundary, we develop an equivalent…
The convex-cocompact subgroups are central in hyperbolic geometry and more generally in negative curvature. Labourie introduced in 2005 the notion of 'Anosov' subgroup which proves progressively to be the right generalizations of convex-cocompact groups, especially after the works of Kapovich, Leeb and Porti. This exposé will review different caracteriations of those groups, emphasizing the parallel (or difference) with the negative curvature, and will give their basic properties.

We introduce a strong notion of quasiconvexity in finitely generated groups, which we call stability. Stability agrees with quasiconvexity in hyperbolic groups and is preserved under quasi-isometry for finitely generated groups. We show that the stable subgroups of mapping class groups are precisely the convex cocompact subgroups. This generalizes a well-known result of Behrstock and is related to questions asked by Farb-Mosher and Farb.

Anosov representations of word hyperbolic groups into higher-rank semisimple Lie groups are representations with finite kernel and discrete image that have strong analogies with convex cocompact representations into rank-one Lie groups. However, the most naive analogy fails: generically, Anosov representations do not act properly and cocompactly on a convex set in the associated Riemannian symmetric space. We study representations into projective indefinite orthogonal groups PO(p,q) by considering their action on the associated pseudo-Riemannian hyperbolic space H^{p,q-1} in place of the Riema…
We strengthen the analogy between convex co-compact Kleinian groups and convex co-compact subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface (in the sense of B. Farb and L. Mosher).
The discrete cocompact subgroups of the five-dimensional connected, simply connected nilpotent Lie groups are determined up to isomorphism. Moreover, we prove if $G=N\times A$ is a connected, simply connected, nilpotent Lie group with an Abelian factor $A$, then every uniform subgroup of $G$ is the direct product of a uniform subgroup of $N$ and ${\mathbb Z}^r$ where $r=\dim A$.
We show that if $H \leq G$ is a closed amenable and cocompact subgroup of a unimodular locally compact group, then the reduced group C*-algebra of $G$ is not simple. Equivalently, there are unitary representations of $G$ that are weakly contained in the left-regular representation, but not weakly equivalent to it. We discuss applications of this result and pose the problem to construct non-discrete topologically simple groups with a cocompact amenable closed subgroup but without a Gelfand pair.
Let G be a complete Kac-Moody group of rank n \geq 2 over the finite field of order q, with Weyl group W and building Δ. We first show that if W is right-angled, then for all q \neq 1 mod 4 the group G admits a cocompact lattice Γwhich acts transitively on the chambers of Δ. We also obtain a cocompact lattice for q =1 mod 4 in the case that Δis Bourdon's building. As a corollary of our constructions, for certain right-angled W and certain q, the lattice Γhas a surface subgroup. We also show that if W is a free product of spherical special subgroups, then for all q, the group G admits a cocompa…
We characterize convex cocompact subgroups of the mapping class group of a surface in terms of uniform convergence actions on the zero locus of the limit set. We also construct subgroups that act as uniform convergence groups on their limit sets, but are not convex cocompact.
We prove that finitely generated purely loxodromic subgroups of a right-angled Artin group $A(Γ)$ fulfill equivalent conditions that parallel characterizations of convex cocompactness in mapping class groups $\text{Mod}(S)$. In particular, such subgroups are quasiconvex in $A(Γ)$. In addition, we identify a milder condition for a finitely generated subgroup of $A(Γ)$ that guarantees it is free, undistorted, and retains finite generation when intersected with $A(Λ)$ for subgraphs $Λ$ of $Γ$. These results have applications to both the study of convex cocompactness in $\text{Mod}(S)$ and the way…
This paper presents a study of the asymptotic geometry of groups with contracting elements, with emphasis on a subclass of statistically convex-cocompact (SCC) actions. The class of SCC actions includes relatively hyperbolic groups, CAT(0) groups with rank-1 elements and mapping class groups, among others. We exploit an extension lemma to prove that a group with SCC actions contains large free sub-semigroups, has purely exponential growth and contains a class of barrier-free sets with a growth-tight property. Our study produces new results and recovers existing ones for many interesting groups…
This paper studies the generic behavior of $k$-tuple elements for $k\ge 2$ in a proper group action with contracting elements, with applications towards relatively hyperbolic groups, CAT(0) groups and mapping class groups. For a class of statistically convex-cocompact action, we show that an exponential generic set of $k$ elements for any fixed $k\ge 2$ generates a quasi-isometrically embedded free subgroup of rank $k$. For $k=2$, we study the sprawl property of group actions and establish that the class of statistically convex-cocompact actions is statistically hyperbolic in a sense of M. Duc…
We define the notion of a hierarchically cocompact classifying space for a family of subgroups of a group. Our main application is to show that the mapping class group $\mbox{Mod}(S)$ of any connected oriented compact surface $S$, possibly with punctures and boundary components and with negative Euler characteristic has a hierarchically cocompact model for the family of virtually cyclic subgroups of dimension at most $\mbox{vcd} \mbox{Mod}(S)+1$. When the surface is closed, we prove that this bound is optimal. In particular, this answers a question of Lück for mapping class groups of surfaces.
Let $S$ be a compact orientable surface, and $\Mod(S)$ its mapping class group. Then there exists a constant $M(S)$, which depends on $S$, with the following property. Suppose $a,b \in \Mod(S)$ are independent (i.e., $[a^n,b^m]\not=1$ for any $n,m \not=0$) pseudo-Anosov elements. Then for any $n,m \ge M$, the subgroup $<a^n,b^m>$ is free of rank two, and convex-cocompact in the sense of Farb-Mosher. In particular all non-trivial elements in $<a^n,b^m>$ are pseudo-Anosov. We also show that there exists a constant $N$, which depends on $a,b$, such that $<a^n,b^m>$ is free of rank two and convex-…
We prove that the Bredon cohomological dimension and the virtual cohomological dimension coincide for groups that admit a cocompact model for $\underline{E}G$ and satisfy properties (M) and (NM). Among the examples of groups satisfying these hypothesis are cocompact and arithmetic Fuchsian groups, one relator groups, the Hilbert modular group and $3$-manifold groups.
We consider a cocompact discrete reflection group $W$ of a CAT(0) space $X$. Then $W$ becomes a Coxeter group. In this paper, we study an analogy between the Davis-Moussong complex $Σ(W,S)$ and the CAT(0) space $X$, and show several analogous results about the limit set of a parabolic subgroup of the Coxeter group $W$.
We determine C-special subgroups of the Bianchi groups of index bounded above by 120 by effectivising the arguments of Agol-Long-Reid. These subgroups are congruence of level 2 or 4 and retract to the free group on two generators. As a consequence, we find a C-special 20-sheeted cover of the figure-eight knot complement. We also determine C-special congruence subgroups for a family of cocompact arithmetic Kleinian groups.
We abstract the notion of an A/QI triple from a number of examples in geometric group theory. Such a triple (G,X,H) consists of a group G acting on a Gromov hyperbolic space X, acylindrically along a finitely generated subgroup H which is quasi-isometrically embedded by the action. Examples include strongly quasi-convex subgroups of relatively hyperbolic groups, convex cocompact subgroups of mapping class groups, many known convex cocompact subgroups of Out(Fn), and groups generated by powers of independent loxodromic WPD elements of a group acting on a Gromov hyperbolic space. We initiate the…
Let G be a real reductive Lie group and H a closed reductive subgroup of G. We investigate the deformation of "standard" compact quotients of G/H, i.e., of quotients of G/H by discrete subgroups Gamma of G that are uniform lattices in a closed reductive subgroup L of G acting properly and cocompactly on G/H. For L of real rank 1, we prove that after a small deformation in G, such a group Gamma remains discrete in G and its action on G/H remains properly discontinuous and cocompact. More generally, we prove that the properness of the action of any convex cocompact subgroup of L on G/H is preser…
This article is dedicated to the characterisation of the relative hyperbolicity of Haglund and Wise's special groups. More precise, we introduce a new combinatorial formalism to study (virtually) special groups, and we prove that, given a cocompact special group $G$ and a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal{H}$, then $G$ is hyperbolic relative to $\mathcal{H}$ if and only if (i) each subgroup of $\mathcal{H}$ is convex-cocompact, (ii) $\mathcal{H}$ is an almost malnormal collection, and (iii) every non-virtually cyclic abelian subgroup of $G$ is contained in a conjugate of some group of $…
It is known that every infinite index quasi-convex subgroup $H$ of a non-elementary hyperbolic group $G$ is a free factor in a larger quasi-convex subgroup of $G$. We give a probabilistic generalization of this result. That is, we show that when $R$ is a subgroup generated by independent random walks in $G$, then $\langle H, R\rangle\cong H\ast R$ with probability going to one as the lengths of the random walks go to infinity and this subgroup is quasi-convex in $G$. Moreover, our results hold for a large class of groups acting on hyperbolic metric spaces and subgroups with quasi-convex orbits…
Let $G$ be a group hyperbolic relative to a finite collection of subgroups $\mathcal P$. Let $\mathcal F$ be the family of subgroups consisting of all the conjugates of subgroups in $\mathcal P$, all their subgroups, and all finite subgroups. Then there is a cocompact model for $E_{\mathcal F} G$. This result was known in the torsion-free case. In the presence of torsion, a new approach was necessary. Our method is to exploit the notion of dismantlability. A number of sample applications are discussed.
We study infinite covolume discrete subgroups of higher rank semisimple Lie groups, motivated by understanding basic properties of Anosov subgroups from various viewpoints (geometric, coarse geometric and dynamical). The class of Anosov subgroups constitutes a natural generalization of convex cocompact subgroups of rank one Lie groups to higher rank. Our main goal is to give several new equivalent characterizations for this important class of discrete subgroups. Our characterizations capture "rank one behavior" of Anosov subgroups and are direct generalizations of rank one equivalents to conve…
For a finitely generated group, there are two recent generalizations of the notion of a quasiconvex subgroup of a word-hyperbolic group, namely a stable subgroup and a Morse or strongly quasiconvex subgroup. Durham and Taylor defined stability and proved stability is equivalent to convex cocompactness in mapping class groups. Another natural generalization of quasiconvexity is given by the notion of a Morse or strongly quasiconvex subgroup of a finitely generated group, studied recently by Tran and Genevois. In general, a subgroup is stable if and only if the subgroup is Morse and hyperbolic. …
In this paper we analyze the action of a quasiconvex subgroup of F_m x Z^n on the convex hull of its orbit and we show that this action is cocompact. Further, using our techniques, we obtain complete description of the quasiconvex subgroups of F_m x Z^n.
We study cocompact lattices with dense projections in a product $G_1 \times G_2$ of locally compact groups and show, under the assumption that each $G_i$ is a closed subgroup of the automorphism group $Aut(T_i)$ of a regular tree satisfying certain local transitivity conditions, that such a lattice is contained in only finitely many discrete subgroups of $G_1 \times G_2$.
We study different notions of quasiconvexity for a subgroup $H$ of a relatively hyperbolic group $G.$ The first result establishes equivalent conditions for $H$ to be relatively quasiconvex. As a corollary we obtain that the relative quasiconvexity is equivalent to the dynamical quasiconvexity. This answers to a question posed by D. Osin \cite{Os06}. In the second part of the paper we prove that a subgroup $H$ of a finitely generated relatively hyperbolic group $G$ acts cocompactly outside its limit set if and only if it is (absolutely) quasiconvex and every its infinite intersection with a pa…
We prove that all atoroidal automorphisms of $Out(F_N)$ act on the space of projectivized geodesic currents with generalized north-south dynamics. As an application, we produce new examples of non virtually cyclic, free and purely atoroidal subgroups of $Out(F_N)$ such that the corresponding free group extension is hyperbolic. Moreover, these subgroups are not necessarily convex cocompact.
A finitely presented 1-ended group $G$ has {\it semistable fundamental group at infinity} if $G$ acts geometrically on a simply connected and locally compact ANR $Y$ having the property that any two proper rays in $Y$ are properly homotopic. This property of $Y$ captures a notion of connectivity at infinity stronger than "1-ended", and is in fact a feature of $G$, being independent of choices. It is a fundamental property in the homotopical study of finitely presented groups. While many important classes of groups have been shown to have semistable fundamental group at infinity, the question o…
In this paper we provide the complete classification of convex cocompact Kleinian group of Hausdorff dimensions less than $1.$ In particular, we prove that every convex cocompact Kleinian group of Hausdorff dimension $<1$ is a classical Schottky group. This upper bound is sharp. The result implies that the converse of Burside's conjecture \cite{Burside} is true: All non-classical Schottky groups must have Hausdorff dimension $\ge1$. The prove of the theorem relies on the result of Hou \cite{Hou}.
We prove the bounded packing property for any abelian subgroup of a group acting properly and cocompactly on a CAT(0) cube complex. A main ingredient of the proof is a cubical flat torus theorem. This ingredient is also used to show that central HNN extensions of maximal free-abelian subgroups of compact special groups are virtually special, and to produce various examples of groups that are not cocompactly cubulated.
Let $1 \to K \longrightarrow G \stackrelπ\longrightarrow Q$ be an exact sequence of hyperbolic groups. Let $Q_1 < Q$ be a quasiconvex subgroup and let $G_1=π^{-1}(Q_1)$. Under relatively mild conditions (e.g. if $K$ is a closed surface group or a free group and $Q$ is convex cocompact), we show that infinite index quasiconvex subgroups of $G_1$ are quasiconvex in $G$. Related results are proven for metric bundles, developable complexes of groups, and graphs of groups.
For finitely generated groups $G$ and $H$ equipped with word metrics, a translation-like action of $H$ on $G$ is a free action where each element of $H$ moves elements of $G$ a bounded distance. Translation-like actions provide a geometric generalization of subgroup containment. Extending work of Cohen, we show that cocompact lattices in a general semisimple Lie group $\mathbf{G}$ that is not isogenous to $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{R})$ admit translation-like actions by $\mathbb{Z}^2$. This result follows from a more general result. Namely, we prove that any cocompact lattice in the unipotent radi…
There is a forgetful map from the mapping class group of a punctured surface to that of the surface with one fewer puncture. We prove that finitely generated purely pseudo-Anosov subgroups of the kernel of this map are convex cocompact in the sense of B. Farb and L. Mosher. In particular, we obtain an affirmative answer to their question of local convex cocompactness of K. Whittlesey's group. In the course of the proof, we obtain a new proof of a theorem of I. Kra. We also relate the action of this kernel on the curve complex to a family of actions on trees. This quickly yields a new proof of …
A graph product kernel means the kernel of the natural surjection from a graph product to the corresponding direct product. We prove that a graph product kernel of countable groups is special, and a graph product of finite or cyclic groups is virtually cocompact special in the sense of Haglund and Wise. The proof of this yields conditions for a graph over which the graph product of arbitrary nontrivial groups (or some cyclic groups, or some finite groups) contains a hyperbolic surface group. In particular, the graph product of arbitrary nontrivial groups over a cycle of length at least five, o…
