The set of equivalence classes of cobounded actions of a group on different hyperbolic metric spaces carries a natural partial order. The resulting poset thus gives rise to a notion of the "best" hyperbolic action of a group as the largest element of this poset, if such an element exists. We call such an action a largest hyperbolic action. While hyperbolic groups admit largest hyperbolic actions, we give evidence in this paper that this phenomenon is rare for non-hyperbolic groups. Presentations for the punctured mapping class groups in terms of Artin groups

Consider an oriented compact surface F of positive genus, possibly with boundary, and a finite set P of punctures in the interior of F, and define the punctured mapping class group of F relatively to P to be the group of isotopy classes of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms h: F-->F which pointwise fix the boundary of F and such that h(P) = P. In this paper, we calculate presentations for all punctured mapping class groups. More precisely, we show that these groups are isomorphic with quotients of Artin groups by some relations involving fundamental elements of parabolic subgroups.

Embedding mapping class groups into finite products of trees

We prove the equivalence between a relative bottleneck property and being quasi-isometric to a tree-graded space. As a consequence, we deduce that the quasi-trees of spaces defined axiomatically by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara are quasi-isometric to tree-graded spaces. Using this we prove that mapping class groups quasi-isometrically embed into a finite product of simplicial trees. In particular, these groups have finite Assouad-Nagata dimension, direct embeddings exhibiting $\ell^p$ compression exponent $1$ for all $p\geq 1$ and they quasi-isometrically embed into $\ell^1(\mathbb N)$. On the classification of mapping class actions on Thurston's asymmetric metric

We study the action of the elements of the mapping class group of a surface of finite type on the Teichmüller space of that surface equipped with Thurston's asymmetric metric. We classify such actions as elliptic, parabolic, hyperbolic and pseudo-hyperbolic, depending on whether the translation distance of such an element is zero or positive and whether the value of this translation distance is attained or not, and we relate these four types to Thurston's classification of mapping classes. Splittings and automorphisms of relatively hyperbolic groups

We study automorphisms of a relatively hyperbolic group G. When G is one-ended, we describe Out(G) using a preferred JSJ tree over subgroups that are virtually cyclic or parabolic. In particular, when G is toral relatively hyperbolic, Out(G) is virtually built out of mapping class groups and subgroups of GL_n(Z) fixing certain basis elements. Conical limit points and the Cannon-Thurston map

Let $G$ be a non-elementary word-hyperbolic group acting as a convergence group on a compact metrizable space $Z$ so that there exists a continuous $G$-equivariant map $i:\partial G\to Z$, which we call a \emph{Cannon-Thurston map}. We obtain two characterzations (a dynamical one and a geometric one) of conical limit points in $Z$ in terms of their pre-images under the Cannon-Thurston map $i$. Relative Weight Filtrations on Completions of Mapping Class Groups

This paper gives an exposition of relative weight filtrations on completions of mapping class groups associated to a stable degeneration of marked genus g curves. These relative weight filtrations have been constructed using Galois theory (with Matsumoto) and Hodge theory (with Pearlstein and Terasoma). It is shown that the level 0 part of the relative weight filtration is an analogue of a parabolic subalgebra of a Kac-Moody Lie algebra. Reduced Bers boundaries of Teichmüller spaces

We consider a quotient space of the Bers boundary of Teichmüller space, which we call the reduced Bers boundary, by collapsing each quasi-conformal deformation space into a point. This reduced Bers boundary turns out to be independent of the basepoint, and the action of the mapping class group on the Teichmüller space extends continuously to this boundary. We show that every auto-homeomorphism on the reduced Bers boundary comes from an extended mapping class.
