If A is a weak C^*-Hopf algebra then the category of finite dimensional unitary representations of A is a monoidal C^*-category with monoidal unit being the GNS representation D_eps associated to the counit \eps. This category has isomorphic left dual and right dual objects which leads, as usual, to the notion of dimension function. However, if \eps is not pure the dimension function is matrix valued with rows and columns labelled by the irreducibles contained in D_eps. This happens precisely when the inclusions A^L < A and A^R < A are not connected. Still there exists a trace on A which is the Markov trace for both inclusions. We derive two numerical invariants for each C^*-WHA of trivial hypercenter. These are the common indices I and δ, of the Haar, respectively Markov conditional expectations of either one of the inclusions A^{L/R} < A and Adual^{L/R} < Adual. In generic cases I > δ. In the special case of weak Kac algebras we show that I=δis an integer.
In a recent paper the authors Beliakova, Blanchet and Gainutdinov have shown that the modified trace on the category $H$-pmod of the projective modules corresponds to the symmetrised integral on the finite dimensional pivotal Hopf algebra $H$. We generalize this fact to the context of $G$-graded categories and Hopf $G$-coalgebra studied by Turaev-Virelizier. We show that the symmetrised $G$-integral on a finite type pivotal Hopf $G$-coalgebra induces a modified trace in the associated $G$-graded category.
The construction of link polynomials associated with finite dimensional representations of ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras is discussed in terms of the formulation of an appropriate Markov trace. We then show that this Markov trace is invariant under twisting of the quasi-Hopf structure, which in turn implies twisting invariance of the associated link polynomials.
Let H be a finite-dimensional unimodular pivotal quasi-Hopf algebra over a field k, and let H-mod be the pivotal tensor category of finite-dimensional H-modules. We give a bijection between left (resp. right) modified traces on the tensor ideal H-pmod of projective modules and left (resp. right) cointegrals for H. The non-zero left/right modified traces are non-degenerate, and we show that non-degenerate left/right modified traces can only exist for unimodular H. This generalises results of Beliakova, Blanchet, and Gainutdinov from Hopf algebras to quasi-Hopf algebras. As an example we compute…
Let H be a finite-dimensional pivotal and unimodular Hopf algebra over a field k. It was shown in [BBGa] that the projective tensor ideal in H-mod admits a unique non-degenerate modified trace, a natural generalisation of the categorical trace. This paper provides an extension of this result to a much more general setting. We first extend the notion of the modified trace to the so-called module trace for a given k-linear module category M over a pivotal category C equipped with a module endofunctor. We provide a non-trivial class of examples of such module traces. In particular, we show that a…
We study the restriction of representations of Cayley-Hamilton algebras to subalgebras. This theory is applied to determine tensor products and branching rules for representations of quantum groups at roots of 1.
In this paper we introduce a trace-like invariant for the irreducible representations of a finite dimensional complex Hopf algebra H. We do so by considering the trace of the map induced by the antipode S on the endomorphisms End(V) of a self-dual module V. We also compute the values of this trace for the representations of two non-semisimple Hopf algebras: u_q(sl_2) and D(H_n(q)), the Drinfeld double of the Taft algebra.
We show that there is a unique Markov trace on the tower of Temperley--Lieb type quotients of Hecke algebras of Coxeter type $E_n$ (for all $n \geq 6$). We explain in detail how this trace may be computed easily using tom Dieck's calculus of diagrams. As applications, we show how to use the trace to show that the diagram representation is faithful, and to compute leading coefficients of certain Kazhdan--Lusztig polynomials.
V. Ginzburg, and independently R. Bocklandt and L. Le Bruyn, defined an infinite-dimensional "necklace" Lie algebra canonically associated to any quiver. Following suggestions of V. Turaev, P. Etingof, and Ginzburg, we define a cobracket and prove that it defines a Lie bialgebra structure. We then present a Hopf algebra quantizing this Lie bialgebra, and prove that it is a Hopf algebra satisfying the PBW property. We present representations into spaces of differential operators on representations of the quiver, which quantize the trace representations of the Lie algebra given by Ginzburg.
This paper has two purposes. The first is to explicate the diagrammatic approach to Hopf algebras due to Kuperberg, and to examine his proof of the existence and uniqueness of integrals in both the diagrammatic and purely algebraic contexts. The second purpose of the paper is to show that the theory of integrals for a finite dimensional Hopf algebra A can be deduced from ideas concerning the trace function on End(A). Connections between Kuperberg's work and the trace function should be of interest to those who study three manifold invariants in relation to Hopf algebras.
We construct a Hopf action, with an invariant trace, of a bicrossed product Hopf algebra $\cH=\big( \cU(\Fg_1) \acr \cR(G_2) \big)^{\cop}$ constructed from a matched pair of Lie groups $G_1$ and $G_2$, on a convolution algebra $\cA=C_c^{\ify}(G_1)\rtimes G_2^δ$. We give an explicit way to construct Hopf cyclic cohomology classes of our Hopf algebra $\cH$ and then realize these classes in terms of explicit representative cocycles in the cyclic cohomology of the convolution algebra $\cA$.
The category-valued trace assigns to a bimodule category over a linear monoidal category a linear category. It generalizes Drinfeld centers of monoidal categories and the relative Deligne product of bimodule categories. In this article, we study bimodule categories that are given as categories of bicomodules over a Hopf algebra. Our main result is a representation-theoretic realization of the category-valued trace as a category of generalized Hopf bimodules.
We associate canonically a cyclic module to any Hopf algebra endowed with a modular pair, consisting of a group-like element and a character, in involution. This provides the key construct allowing to extend cyclic cohomology to Hopf algebras in the non-unimodular case and further to develop a theory of characteristic classes for actions of Hopf algebras compatible not only with traces but also with the modular theory of weights. It applies to ribbon and to coribbon algebras, as well as to quantum groups and their duals.

We review the depth two and Hopf algebroid-Galois theory in math.RA/0108067 and specialize to induced representations of semisimple algebras and character theory of finite groups. We show that depth two subgroups over the complex numbers are normal subgroups. As a converse we observe that normal Hopf subalgebras over a field are depth two extensions. We introduce a generalized Miyashita-Ulbrich action on the centralizer of a ring extension, and apply it to a study of depth two and separable extensions, providing new characterizations of separable and H-separable extensions. With a view to the …
We consider issues related to the origins, sources and initial motivations of the theory of Hopf algebras. We consider the two main sources of primeval development: algebraic topology and algebraic group theory. Hopf algebras are named from the work of Heinz Hopf in the 1940's. In this note we trace the infancy of the subject back to papers from the 40's, 50's and 60's in the two areas mentioned above. Many times we just describe -- and/or transcribe parts of -- some of the relevant original papers on the subject.
We extend Schaumann's theory of pivotal structures on fusion categories matched to a module category and of module traces developed in arXiv:1206.5716 to the case of non-semisimple tensor categories, and use it to study eigenvalues of the squared antipode $S^2$ in weak Hopf algebras. In particular, we diagonalize $S^2$ for semisimple weak Hopf algebras in characteristic zero, generalizing the result of Nikshych in the pseudounitary case. We show that the answer depends only on the Grothendieck group data of the pivotalizations of the categories involved and the global dimension of the fusion c…
We compute the weights, i.e. the values at the minimal idempotents, for the Markov trace on the Hecke algebra of type $B$ and type $D$. In order to prove the weight formula, we define representations of the Hecke algebra of type $B$ onto a reduced Hecke algebre of type $A$. To compute the weights for type $D$ we use the inclusion of the Hecke algebra of type $D$ into the Hecke algebra of type $B$.
Using the Fourier expansion of Markov traces for Ariki-Koike algebras over $\mathbb{Q}(q,u_{1},...,u_{e})$, we give a direct definition of the Alexander polynomials for mixed links. We observe that under the corresponding specialization of a Markov parameter, the Fourier coefficients of Markov traces take quite simple form. As a consequence, we show that the Alexander polynomial of a mixed link is essentially equal to the Alexander polynomial of the link obtained by resolving the twisted parts.
We construct a new inductive basis of the Birman-Murakami-Wenzl algebra. Using it, we provide a new proof of the existence of the Markov trace on the BMW algebras affording the two-variable Kauffman polynomial. We prove also that all the transverse Markov traces on the BMW algebras are determined by the self-linking number, the HOMFLY-PT polynomial and the two-variable Kauffman polynomial.
We introduce a large class of bicovariant differential calculi on any quantum group $A$, associated to $Ad$-invariant elements. For example, the deformed trace element on $SL_q(2)$ recovers Woronowicz' $4D_\pm$ calculus. More generally, we obtain a sequence of differential calculi on each quantum group $A(R)$, based on the theory of the corresponding braided groups $B(R)$. Here $R$ is any regular solution of the QYBE.
In 1997 we proved that any triangular semisimple Hopf algebra over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic 0 is obtained from the group algebra k[G] of a finite group G, by twisting its comultiplication by a twist in the sense of Drinfeld. In this paper, we generalize this result to not necessarily finite-dimensional cotriangular Hopf algebras. Namely, our main result says that a cotriangular Hopf algebra A over k is obtained from a function algebra of a pro-algebraic group by twisting by a Hopf 2-cocycle, and possibly changing its R-form by a central grouplike element of A^* of orde…
We discuss relations between some category-theoretical notions for a finite tensor category and cointegrals on a quasi-Hopf algebra. Specifically, for a finite-dimensional quasi-Hopf algebra $H$, we give an explicit description of categorical cointegrals of the category ${}_H \mathscr{M}$ of left $H$-modules in terms of cointegrals on $H$. Provided that $H$ is unimodular, we also express the Frobenius structure of the `adjoint algebra' in the Yetter-Drinfeld category ${}^H_H \mathscr{YD}$ by using an integral in $H$ and a cointegral on $H$. Finally, we give a description of the twisted module …
We develop the theory of semisimple weak Hopf algebras and obtain analogues of a number of classical results for ordinary semisimple Hopf algebras. We prove a criterion for semisimplicity and analyze the square of the antipode S^2 of a semisimple weak Hopf algebra A. We explain how the Frobenius-Perron dimensions of irreducible A-modules and eigenvalues of S^2 can be computed using the inclusion matrix associated to A. A trace formula of Larson and Radford is extended to a relation between the global and Frobenius-Perron dimensions of A. Finally, an analogue of the Class Equation of Kac and Zh…
We prove that a depth two Hopf subalgebra K of a semisimple Hopf algebra H is normal (where the ground field $k$ is algebraically closed of characteristic zero). This means on the one hand that a Hopf subalgebra is normal when inducing (then restricting) modules several times as opposed to one time creates no new simple constituents. This point of view was taken in the paper http://arxiv.org/abs/math/0409346 which established a normality result in case H and K are finite group algebras. On the other hand this means that K is normal in H when H | K is a Galois extension with respect to action o…
In this article, we define and study the affine and cyclotomic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. These algebras generalise at the same time the Ariki-Koike and affine Hecke algebras and the Yokonuma-Hecke algebras. We study the representation theory of these algebras and construct several bases for them. We then show how we can define Markov traces on them, which we in turn use to construct invariants for framed and classical knots in the solid torus. Finally, we study the Markov trace with zero parameters on the cyclotomic Yokonuma-Hecke algebras and determine the Schur elements with respect to that t…
We introduce two kinds of gauge invariants for any finite-dimensional Hopf algebra H. When H is semisimple over C, these invariants are respectively, the trace of the map induced by the antipode on the endomorphism ring of a self-dual simple module, and the higher Frobenius-Schur indicators of the regular representation. We further study the values of these higher indicators in the context of complex semisimple quasi-Hopf algebras H. We prove that these indicators are non-negative provided the module category over H is modular, and that for a prime p, the p-th indicator is equal to 1 if, and o…
In this paper we show that to a unital associative algebra object (resp. co-unital co-associative co-algebra object) of any abelian monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ endowed with a symmetric $2$-trace, one can attach a cyclic (resp. cocyclic) module, and therefore speak of the cyclic (co)homology of the (co)algebra "with coefficients in $F$". We observe that if $\mathcal{M}$ is a $\mathcal{C}$-bimodule category equipped with a stable central pair then $\mathcal{C}$ acquires a symmetric 2-trace. The dual notions of symmetric $2$-contratraces and stable central contrapairs are derived as well. As …
We present an invariant of connected and oriented closed 3-manifolds based on a coribbon Weak Hopf Algebra H with a suitable left-integral. Our invariant can be understood as the generalization to Weak Hopf Algebras of the Hennings-Kauffman-Radford evaluation of an unoriented framed link using a dual quantum-trace. This quantum trace satisfies conditions that render the link evaluation invariant under Kirby moves. If H is a suitable finite-dimensional Hopf algebra (not weak), our invariant reduces to the Kauffman-Radford invariant for the dual of H. If H is the Weak Hopf Algebra Tannaka-Krein …
We study a symmetric Markov extension of k-algebras N \into M, a certain kind of Frobenius extension with conditional expectation that is tracial on the centralizer and dual bases with a separability property. We place a depth two condition on this extension, which is essentially the requirement that the Jones tower N \into M \into M_1 \into M_2 can be obtained by taking relative tensor products with centralizers A = C_{M_1}(N) and B = C_{M_2}(M). Under this condition, we prove that N \into M is the invariant subalgebra pair of a weak Hopf algebra action by A, i.e., that N = M^A. The endomorph…
We prove that the trace of the $n$th power of the antipode of a Hopf algebra with the Chevalley property is a gauge invariant, for each integer $n$. As a consequence, the order of the antipode, and its square, are invariant under Drinfeld twists. The invariance of the order of the antipode is closely related to a question of Shimizu on the pivotal covers of finite tensor categories, which we affirmatively answer for representation categories of Hopf algebras with the Chevalley property.
We classify the Markov traces factoring through the Birman-Wenzl-Murakami (BMW) algebras. For this purpose, we define a common `cover' for the two variations of the BMW-algebra originating from the quantum orthogonal/symplectic duality, which are responsible for the so-called `Dubrovnik' variation of the Kauffman polynomial. For generic values of the defining parameters of the BMW algebra, this cover is isomorphic to the BMW algebra itself, and this fact provides a shorter defining relation for it, in the generic case. For a certain 1-dimensional family of special values however, it is a non-t…
REVISED VERSION: We have re-organized the paper, and included some new results. Most important, we prove that the (truncated) Weil complexes compute the cyclic cohomology of the Hopf algebra (see the new Theorem 7.3). We also include a short discussion on the uni-modulare case, and the computation for $H= U_q(sl_2)$. THE OLD ABSTRACT: We give a construction of Connes-Moscovici's cyclic cohomology for any Hopf algebra equipped with a twisted antipode. Furthermore, we introduce a non-commutative Weil complex, which connects the work of Gelfand and Smirnov with cyclic cohomology. We show how the …
Kashaev and Reshetikhin proposed a generalization of the Reshetikhin-Turaev link invariant construction to tangles with a flat connection in a principal G-bundle over the complement of the tangle. The purpose of this paper is to adapt and renormalize their construction to define invariants of G-links using the semi-cyclic representations of the non-restricted quantum group associated to sl2, defined by De Concini and Kac. Our construction uses a modified Markov trace. In our main example, the semi-cyclic invariants are a natural extension of the generalized Alexander polynomial invariants defi…
We investigate the quasi-Hopf twist of the quantum toroidal algebra of $\mathfrak{gl}_1$ as an elliptic deformation. Under the quasi-Hopf twist the underlying algebra remains the same, but the coproduct is deformed, where the twist parameter $p$ is identified as the elliptic modulus. Computing the quasi-Hopf twist of the $R$ matrix, we uncover the relation to the elliptic lift of the Nekrasov factor for instanton counting of the quiver gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^4 \times T^2$. The same $R$ matrix also appears in the commutation relation of the intertwiners, which implies an elliptic quantum…
We give a geometric interpretation of the Jones-Ocneanu trace on the Hecke algebra, using the equivariant cohomology of sheaves on SL(n). This construction makes sense for all simple algebraic groups, so we obtain a generalization of the Jones-Ocneanu trace to Hecke algebras of other types. We give a geometric expansion of this trace in terms of the irreducible characters of the Hecke algebra, and conclude that it agrees with a trace defined independently by Gomi. Based on our proof, we also prove that certain simple perverse sheaves on a reductive algebraic group G are equivariantly formal fo…
We give a pedagogical introduction to integration techniques appropriate for non-commutative spaces while presenting some new results as well. A rather detailed discussion outlines the motivation for adopting the Hopf algebra language. We then present some trace formulas for the integral on Hopf algebras and show how to treat the $\int 1=0$ case. We extend the discussion to braided Hopf algebras relying on diagrammatic techniques. The use of the general formulas is illustrated by explicitly worked out examples.
We provide a necessary and sufficient condition for a simple object in a pivotal k-category to be ambidextrous. In turn, these objects imply the existence of nontrivial trace functions in the category. These functions play an important role in low-dimensional topology as well as in studying the category itself. In particular, we prove they exist for factorizable ribbon Hopf algebras, modular representations of finite groups and their quantum doubles, complex and modular Lie (super)algebras, the $(1,p)$ minimal model in conformal field theory, and quantum groups at a root of unity.
In this paper we represent the classical braids in the Yokonuma--Hecke and the adelic Yokonuma--Hecke algebras. More precisely, we define the completion of the framed braid group and we introduce the adelic Yokonuma--Hecke algebras, in analogy to the $p$--adic framed braids and the $p$--adic Yokonuma--Hecke algebras introduced in \cite{jula,jula2}. We further construct an adelic Markov trace, analogous to the $p$--adic Markov trace constructed in \cite{jula2}, and using the traces in \cite{ju} and the adelic Markov trace we define topological invariants of classical knots and links, upon impos…
The coset $G$-space of a finite group and a subgroup is a fundamental module of study of Schur and others around 1930; for example, its endomorphism algebra is a Hecke algebra of double cosets. We study and review its generalization $Q$ to Hopf subalgebras, especially the tensor powers and similarity as modules over a Hopf algebra, or what's the same, Morita equivalence of the endomorphism algebras. We prove that $Q$ has a nonzero integral if and only if the modular function restricts to the modular function of the Hopf subalgebra. We also study and organize knowledge of $Q$ and its tensor pow…
We study the biclosedness of the monoidal categories of modules and comodules over a (left or right) Hopf algebroid, along with the bimodule category centres of the respective opposite categories and a corresponding categorical equivalence to anti Yetter-Drinfel'd contramodules and anti Yetter-Drinfel'd modules, respectively. This is directly connected to the existence of a trace functor on the monoidal categories of modules and comodules in question, which in turn allows to recover (or define) cyclic operators enabling cyclic cohomology.
For a finite-index $\mathrm{II}_1$ subfactor $N \subset M$, we prove the existence of a universal Hopf $\ast$-algebra (or, a discrete quantum group in the analytic language) acting on $M$ in a trace-preserving fashion and fixing $N$ pointwise. We call this Hopf $\ast$-algebra the quantum Galois group for the subfactor and compute it in some examples of interest, notably for arbitrary irreducible finite-index depth-two subfactors. Along the way, we prove the existence of universal acting Hopf algebras for more general structures (tensors in enriched categories), in the spirit of recent work by …
In $1998$, Connes and Moscovici defined the cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras. In $2010$, Khalkhali and Pourkia proposed a braided generalization: to any Hopf algebra $H$ in a braided category $\mathcal B$, they associate a paracocyclic object in $\mathcal B$. In this paper we explicitly compute the powers of the paracocyclic operator of this paracocyclic object. Also, we introduce twisted modular pairs in involution for $H$ and derive (co)cyclic modules from them. Finally, we relate the paracocyclic object associated with $H$ to that associated with an $H$-module coalgebra via a categorical …
The purpose of this paper is to develop a theory of bimonads and Hopf monads on arbitrary categories thus providing the possibility to transfer the essentials of the theory of Hopf algebras in vector spaces to more general settings. There are several extensions of this theory to {\em monoidal} categories which in a certain sense follow the classical trace. Here we do not pose any conditions on our base category but we do refer to the monoidal structure of the category of endofunctors on any category $\A$ and by this we retain some of the combinatorial complexity which makes the theory so inter…
The second author constructed a topological ribbon Hopf algebra from the unrolled quantum group associated with the super Lie algebra $\mathfrak{sl}(2|1)$. We generalize this fact to the context of unrolled quantum groups and construct the associated topological ribbon Hopf algebras. Then we use such an algebra, the discrete Fourier transforms, a symmetrized graded integral and a modified trace to define a modified graded Hennings invariant. Finally, we use the notion of a modified integral to extend this invariant to empty manifolds and show that it recovers the CGP-invariant.
We construct non-semisimple $2+1$-TQFTs yielding mapping class group representations in Lyubashenko's spaces. In order to do this, we first generalize Beliakova, Blanchet and Geer's logarithmic Hennings invariants based on quantum $\mathfrak{sl}_2$ to the setting of finite-dimensional non-degenerate unimodular ribbon Hopf algebras. The tools used for this construction are a Hennings-augmented Reshetikhin-Turaev functor and modified traces. When the Hopf algebra is factorizable, we further show that the universal construction of Blanchet, Habegger, Masbaum and Vogel produces a $2+1$-TQFT on a n…
We introduce a family of factorisable ribbon quasi-Hopf algebras $Q(N)$ for $N$ a positive integer: as an algebra, $Q(N)$ is the semidirect product of $\mathbb{C}\mathbb{Z}_2$ with the direct sum of a Grassmann and a Clifford algebra in $2N$ generators. We show that $Rep Q(N)$ is ribbon equivalent to the symplectic fermion category $SF(N)$ that was computed by the third author from conformal blocks of the corresponding logarithmic conformal field theory. The latter category in turn is conjecturally ribbon equivalent to representations of $V_{ev}$, the even part of the symplectic fermion vertex…
