We enumerate the singular algebraic curves in a complete linear system on a smooth projective surface. The system must be suitably ample in a rather precise sense. The curves may have up to eight nodes, or a triple point of a given type and up to three nodes. The curves must also pass through appropriately many general points. The number of curves is given by a universal polynomial in four basic Chern numbers.
To justify the enumeration, we make a rudimentary classification of the types of singularities using Enriques diagrams, obtaining results like Arnold's. We show that the curves in question do, in fact, appear with multiplicity 1 using the versal deformation space, Shustin's codimension formula, and Gotzmann's regularity theorem. Finally, we relate our work to Vainsencher's work with up to seven nodes.
In this paper we enumerate nonhyperelliptic superspecial curves of genus $4$ over prime fields of characteristic $p\le 11$. Our algorithm works for nonhyperelliptic curves over an arbitrary finite field in characteristic $p \ge 5$. We execute the algorithm for prime fields of $p\le 11$ with our implementation on a computer algebra system Magma. Thanks to the fact that the cardinality of $\mathbb{F}_{p^a}$-isomorphism classes of superspecial curves over $\mathbb{F}_{p^a}$ of a fixed genus depends only on the parity of $a$, this paper contributes to the odd-degree case for genus $4$, whereas our…
A new, simple method to approach enumerative questions about rational curves on rational surfaces is described. Applications include a short proof of Kontsevich's formula for plane curves and a the solution of the analogous problem for the Hirzebruch surface F_3.
We consider the general problem of enumerating branched covers of the projective line from a fixed general curve subject to ramification conditions at possibly moving points. Our main computations are in genus 1; the theory of limit linear series allows one to reduce to this case. We first obtain a simple formula for a weighted count of pencils on a fixed elliptic curve E, where base-points are allowed. We then deduce, using an inclusion-exclusion procedure, formulas for the numbers of maps E->P^1 with moving ramification conditions. A striking consequence is the invariance of these counts und…
Enumerative algebraic geometry deals with problems of counting geometric objects defined algebraically, An important class of enumerative problems is that of counting curves: given a class of curves in some projective variety defined by fixing some algebraic or geometric invariants (such as degree, genus and types of singularities), the problem usually takes the form of "how many curves of that class pass through a configuration of n points in general position?" Tropical Geometry deals with certain piecewise-linear complexes, which arise as degeneration of families of complex algebraic varieti…
We suggest an invariant way to enumerate nodal and nodal-cuspidal real deformations of real plane curve singularities. The key idea is to assign Welschinger signs to the counted deformations. Our invariants can be viewed as a local version of Welschinger invariants enumerating real plane rational curves.
Hassett constructed a class of modular compactifications of the moduli space of pointed curves by adding weights to the marked points. This leads to a natural wall and chamber decomposition of the domain of admissible weights where the moduli space and universal family remain constant inside a chamber, and may change upon crossing a wall. The goal of this paper is to count the number of chambers in this decomposition. We relate these chambers to a class of boolean functions known as linear threshold functions (LTFs), and discover a subclass of LTFs which are in bijection with the chambers. Usi…
We collect various known results (about plane curves and the moduli space of stable maps) to derive new recursive formulas enumerating low genus plane curves of any degree with various behaviors. Recursive formulas are given for the characteristic numbers of rational plane curves, elliptic plane curves, and elliptic plane curves with fixed complex structure. Recursions are also given for the number of elliptic (and rational) plane curves with various "codimension 1" behavior (cuspidal, tacnodal, triple pointed, etc., as well as the geometric and arithmetic sectional genus of the Severi variety…
We continue the development of methods for enumerating nodal curves on smooth complex surfaces, stressing the range of validity. We illustrate the new methods in three important examples. First, for up to eight nodes, we confirm Göttsche's conjecture about plane curves of low degree. Second, we justify Vainsencher's enumeration of irreducible six-nodal plane curves on a general quintic threefold in four-space. Third, we supplement Bryan and Leung's enumeration of nodal curves in a given homology class on an Abelian surface of Picard number one.
Given a family $X/B$ of nodal curves, we construct canonically and compatibly with base-change, via an explicit blow-up of the Cartesian product $X^r/B$, a family $W^r(X/B)$ parametrizing length-$r$ subschemes of fibres of $X/B$ (plus some additional data). Though $W^r(X/B)$ is singular, the important sheaves on it are locally free, which allows us to study intersection theory on it and deduce enumerative applications, including some relative multiple point formulae, enumerating the length-$r$ schemes contained simultaneously in some fibre of $X/B$ and some fibre of a given map from $X$ to a s…
This paper provides an algorithm enumerating superspecial trigonal curves of genus $5$ over finite fields. Executing the algorithm over a computer algebra system Magma, we enumerate them over finite fields $\mathbb{F}_{p^a}$ for any natural number $a$ if $p \leq 7$ and for odd $a$ if $p \leq 13$.
In complex algebraic geometry, the problem of enumerating plane elliptic curves of given degree with fixed complex structure has been solved by R.Pandharipande using Gromov-Witten theory. In this article we treat the tropical analogue of this problem, the determination of the number of tropical elliptic plane curves of degree d and fixed ``tropical j-invariant'' interpolating an appropriate number of points in general position. We show that this number is independent of the position of the points and the value of the j-invariant and that it coincides with the number of complex elliptic curves.…
We present an approach to a large class of enumerative problems concerning rational curves in projective spaces. This approach uses analysis to obtain topological information about moduli spaces of stable maps. We demonstrate it by enumerating one-component rational curves with a triple point or a tacnodal point in the three-dimensional projective space and with a cusp in any projective space.
We compute the $δ$-invariant of a curve singularity parameterized by generic sparse polynomials. We apply this to describe topological types of generic singularities of sparse resultants and ``algebraic knot diagrams'' (i.e. generic algebraic spatial curve projections). Our approach is based on some new results on zero loci of Schur polynomials, on transversality properties of maps defined by sparse polynomials, and on a new refinement of the notion of tropicalization of a curve (ultratropicalization), which may be of independent interest.
Recently Fukasawa, Homma and Kim introduced and studied certain projective singular curves over $\mathbb {F}_q$ with many extremal properties. Here we extend their definition to more general non-rational curves.
This paper addresses a very classical topic that goes back at least to Plücker: how to understand a plane curve singularity using its polar curves. Here, we explicitly construct the singular points of a plane curve singularity directly from the weighted cluster of base points of its polars. In particular, we determine the equisingularity class (or topological equivalence class) of a germ of plane curve from the equisingularity class of generic polars and combinatorial data about the non-singular points shared by them.
We investigate Koszul cohomology on irreducible nodal curves. In particular, we prove both Green and Green-Lazarsfeld conjectures for the general k-gonal nodal curve.
Pfister and Steenbrink studied punctual Hilbert schemes for irreducible curve singularities. In particular, they investigated the structure of special punctual Hilbert schemes for certain monomial curve singularities. In this paper, we study the punctual Hilbert schemes of all degrees for the curve singularities of types $E_6$ and $E_8$. For our analysis, we introduce computational algorithms to decompose a punctual Hilbert schemes into affine cells. We also use the theory of Gröbner basis and known results about the compactified Jacobian of singular curves to prove our main theorems.
We show the possible Milnor numbers of deformations of semi-quasi-homogeneous isolated plane curve singularities. In Theorem 1.1 we list integers can be attained as Milnor numbers of a given semi-quasi-homogeneous singularity.
The dimensions of the graded quotients of the cohomology of a plane curve complement with respect to the Hodge filtration are described in terms of simple geometrical invariants. The case of curves with ordinary singularities is discussed in detail.
There are 42 types of real singular points for irreducible real quintic curves and 49 types of real singular points for reducible real quintic curves. The classification of real singular points for irreducible real quintic curves is originally due to Golubina and Tai. There are 28 types of singular points for irreducible complex quintic curves and 33 types of singular points for reducible complex quintic curves. We derive the complete classification with proof by using the computer algebra system Maple. We clarify that the classification is based on computing just enough of the Puiseux expansi…
We prove that the Eynard-Orantin symplectic invariants of the curve xy-y^2=1 are the orbifold Euler characteristics of the moduli spaces of genus g curves. We do this by associating to the Eynard-Orantin invariants of xy-y^2=1 a problem of enumerating covers of the two-sphere branched over three points. This viewpoint produces new recursion relations---string and dilaton equations---between the quasi-polynomials that enumerate such covers.
We study adjacency of equisingularity types of planar curve singularities in terms of their Enriques diagrams. For linear adjacency a complete answer is obtained, whereas for arbitrary (analytic) adjacency a necessary condition and a sufficient condition are proved. We also show an example of singular curve of type D' that can be deformed to a curve of type D without D' being adjacent to D.
For real irreducible algebraic curves of the seventh degree, there are 22 types of singular points of multiplicity six, 174 types of singular points of multiplicity five, and at least 182 types of singular points of multiplicity four. For complex irreducible algebraic curves of the seventh degree, there are 12 types of singular points of multiplicity six, 92 types of singular points of multiplicity five, and at least 92 types of singular points of multiplicity four. In the final section of the paper, a wide variety of open problems on the classification of singular points of plane algebraic cu…
This note is devoted, after the result of Harui, arXiv:1306.5842, to solve some natural questions for non-singular plane curves of degree $d$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of zero characteristic.
In this work we describe a construction of semistable fibrations over an elliptic curve with one unique singular fibre and we give effective examples using monodromy of curves.
A projective non-singular plane algebraic curve of degree d<=4 is called maximally symmetric if it attains the maximum order of the automorphism groups for complex non-singular plane algebraic curves of degree d. For d<=7, all such curves are known. Up to projectivities, they are the Fermat curve for d=5,7, see \cite{kmp1,kmp2}, the Klein quartic for d=4, see \cite{har}, and the Wiman sextic for d=6, see \cite{doi}. In this paper we work on projective plane curves defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, and we extend this result to every d>=8 showing that the Fermat …
We give a construction of singular curves with many rational points over finite fields. This construction enables us to prove some results on the maximum number of rational points on an absolutely irreducible projective algebraic curve defined over Fq of geometric genus g and arithmetic genus $π$.
Following the first paper, we continue to study Mori extractions from singular curves centred in a smooth 3-fold. We treat the case where the divisorial extraction exists in relative codimension at most 3.
There are thirteen types of singular points for irreducible real quartic curves and seventeen types of singular points for reducible real quartic curves. This classification is originally due to D.A. Gudkov. There are nine types of singular points for irreducible complex quartic curves and ten types of singular points for reducible complex quartic curves. We derive the complete classification with proof by using the computer algebra system Maple. We clarify that the classification is based on computing just enough of the Puiseux expansion to separate the branches. Thus, the proof consists of a…
We present the concept of Baker-Akhiezer functions on singular complex curves. For this purpose, we translate the algebraic presentation of such curves in [Se, Chapter~IV] into the analytic setting. Generalised divisors and their interplay with partial desingularisations are the fundament of the construction of Baker-Akhiezer functions.
In 1990, Hefez and Voloch proved that the number of $F_q$-rational points on a nonsingular plane $q$-Frobenius nonclassical curve of degree $d$ is $N = d(q-d+2)$. We address these curves in the singular setting. In particular, we prove that $d(q-d + 2)$ is a lower bound on the number of $F_q$-rational points on such curves of degree $d$.
A stratified bundle is a vector bundle which is a D-module. We show that regular singularity of stratified bundles on smooth varieties in positive characteristic is preserved by pullback and that regular singularity can be checked on curves, if the ground field is large enough.
In this paper we give some criteria for a family of generically reduced plane curve singularities to be equinormalizable. The first criterion is based on the $δ$-invariant of a (non-reduced) curve singularity which is introduced by Brücker-Greuel (\cite{BG}). The second criterion is based on the I-equisingularity of a $k$-parametric family ($k\geq 1$) of generically reduced plane curve singularities, which is introduced by Nobile (\cite{No}) for one-parametric families. The equivalence of some kinds of equisingularities of a family of generically reduced plane curve singularities is also studi…
In this paper we proof the existence of a linearization for singular principal G-bundles not depending on the base curve. This allow us to construct the relative compact moduli space of δ-(semi)stable singular principal G-bundles over families of reduced projective and connected nodal curves, and to reduce the construction of the universal moduli space over $\overline{M}_{g}$ to the construction of the universal moduli space of swamps.
In a family of curves, the Chern numbers of a singular fiber are the local contributions to the Chern numbers of the total space. We will give some inequalities between the Chern numbers of a singular fiber as well as their lower and upper bounds. We introduce the dual fiber of a singular fiber, and prove a duality theorem. As an application, we will classify singular fibers with large or small Chern numbers.
The purpose of this note is to prove that there is an algebraic stack U parameterizing all curves. The curves that appear in the algebraic stack U are allowed to be arbitrarily singular, non-reduced, disconnected, and reducible. We also prove the boundedness of the open substack of U parameterizing geometrically connected curves with fixed arithmetic genus g and $\leq$ e irreducible components. This is an updated and expanded version of [arXiv:0902.3690v2, Appendix B].
We prove results generalizing the classical Riemann Singularity Theorem to the case of integral, singular curves. The main result is a computation of the multiplicity of the theta divisor of an integral, nodal curve at an arbitrary point. We also conjecture a general formula for the multiplicity of points on the theta divisor of a singular integral curve and present some evidence for this conjecture. Our results give a partial answer to a question posed by Lucia Caporaso in a recent paper.
The objective of the paper is to prove that, as it happens for smooth elliptic curves, any Fourier-Mukai partner of a projective reduced Gorenstein curve of genus one and trivial dualising sheaf, is isomorphic to itself.
This article, based on the talk given by one of the authors at the Pierrettefest in Castro Urdiales in June 2008, is an overview of a number of recent results on the polar invariants of plane curve singularities.
Let S be a complex smooth projective surface and L be a line bundle on S. For any given collection of isolated topological or analytic singularity types, we show the number of curves in the linear system |L| with prescribed singularities is a universal polynomial of Chern numbers of L and S, assuming L is sufficiently ample. Moreover, we define a generating series whose coefficients are these universal polynomials and discuss its properties. This work is a generalization of Gottsche's conjecture to curves with higher singularities.
We study equi-singular strata of plane curves with two singular points of prescribed types. The method of the previous work [Kerner06] is generalized to this case. In particular we consider the enumerative problem for plane curves with two singular points of linear singularity types. First the problem for two ordinary multiple points of fixed multiplicities is solved. Then the enumeration for arbitrary linear types is reduced to the case of ordinary multiple points and to the understanding of "merging" of singular points. Many examples and numerical answers are given.
We study geometric properties of linear strata of uni-singular curves. The singularities of closures of the strata are resolved and the resolutions are represent as projective bundles. This enables to study their geometry. In particular we calculate the Picard groups of the strata and the intersection rings of the closures of the strata. The rational equivalence classes of some geometric cycles on the strata are calculated. As an auxiliary problem we discuss the collision of two singular points, restrictions on possible resulting singularity types and solve the collision problem in several cas…
We collect some classical results about holomorphic 1-forms of a reduced complex curve singularity, in particular of a complete intersection, and use them to compare the Milnor number, the Tjurina number and the dimension of the torsion part of the 1-forms.
Studying degenerations of moduli spaces of semistable principal bundles on smooth curves leads to the problem of constructing and studying moduli spaces on singular curves. In this note, we will see that the moduli spaces of $δ$-semistable pseudo bundles on a nodal curve constructed by the first author become, for large values of $δ$, the moduli spaces for semistable singular principal bundles. The latter are reasonable candidates for degenerations and a potential basis of further developments as on irreducible nodal curves. In particular, we find a notion of semistability for principal bundle…
Motivated by S-duality modularity conjectures in string theory, we define new invariants counting a restricted class of 2-dimensional torsion sheaves, enumerating pairs $Z\subset H$ in a Calabi-Yau threefold X. Here H is a member of a sufficiently positive linear system and Z is a 1-dimensional subscheme of it. The associated sheaf is the ideal sheaf of $Z\subset H$, pushed forward to X and considered as a certain Joyce-Song pair in the derived category of X. We express these invariants in terms of the MNOP invariants of X.
