We study geometric properties of linear strata of uni-singular curves. The singularities of closures of the strata are resolved and the resolutions are represent as projective bundles. This enables to study their geometry. In particular we calculate the Picard groups of the strata and the intersection rings of the closures of the strata. The rational equivalence classes of some geometric cycles on the strata are calculated.
As an auxiliary problem we discuss the collision of two singular points, restrictions on possible resulting singularity types and solve the collision problem in several cases. Then we present some cases of enumeration of curves with two singular points, one of them being a node.
Let $X$ be a complex, irreducible, quasi-projective variety, and $π:\widetilde X\to X$ a resolution of singularities of $X$. Assume that the singular locus ${\text{Sing}}(X)$ of $X$ is smooth, that the induced map $π^{-1}({\text{Sing}}(X))\to {\text{Sing}}(X)$ is a smooth fibration admitting a cohomology extension of the fiber, and that $π^{-1}({\text{Sing}}(X))$ has a negative normal bundle in $\widetilde X$. We present a very short and explicit proof of the Decomposition Theorem for $π$, providing a way to compute the intersection cohomology of $X$ by means of the cohomology of $\widetilde X…
We further analyze the moduli space of stable curves with level structure provided by Chiodo and Farkas in \cite{AA}. Their result builds upon Harris and Mumford analysis of the locus of singularities of the moduli space of curves and shows in particular that for levels 2, 3, 4, and 6 the locus of noncanonical singularities is completely analogous to the locus described by Harris and Mumford, it has codimension 2 and arises from the involution of elliptic tails carrying a trivial level structure. For the remaining levels (5, 7, and beyond), the picture also involves components of higher codime…
Let C be a locally planar curve. Its versal deformation admits a stratification by the genera of the fibres. The strata are singular; we show that their multiplicities at the central point are determined by the Euler numbers of the Hilbert schemes of points on C. These Euler numbers have made two prior appearances. First, in certain simple cases, they control the contribution of C to the Pandharipande-Thomas curve counting invariants of three-folds. In this context, our result identifies the strata multiplicities as the local contributions to the Gopakumar-Vafa BPS invariants. Second, when C i…
In the geometric version of the Langlands correspondence, irregular singular point connections play the role of Galois representations with wild ramification. In this paper, we develop a geometric theory of fundamental strata to study irregular singular connections on the projective line. Fundamental strata were originally used to classify cuspidal representations of the general linear group over a local field. In the geometric setting, fundamental strata play the role of the leading term of a connection. We introduce the concept of a regular stratum, which allows us to generalize the conditio…
We show that the strata $ \mathcal{M}_{11,6}(k) \subset \mathcal{M}_{11} $ of $ 6-$gonal curves of genus $ 11 $, equipped with $k$ mutually independent and type I pencils of degree six, have a unirational irreducible component for $5\leq k\leq 9$. The unirational families arise from degree $ 9 $ plane curves with $ 4 $ ordinary triple and $ 5 $ ordinary double points that dominate an irreducible component of expected dimension. We will further show that the family of degree $ 8 $ plane curves with $ 10 $ ordinary double points covers an irreducible component of excess dimension in $ \mathcal{M…
We consider the Newton stratification on Iwahori double cosets for a connected reductive group. We prove the existence of Newton strata whose closures cannot be expressed as a union of strata, and show how this is implied by the existence of non-equidimensional affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties. We also give an explicit example for a group of type $A_4$.
We enumerate complex algebraic hypersurfaces in $P^n$, of a given (high) degree with one singular point of a given singularity type. Our approach is to compute the (co)homology classes of the corresponding equi-singular strata in the parameter space of hypersurfaces. We suggest an inductive procedure, based on intersection theory combined with liftings and degenerations. The procedure computes the (co)homology class in question, whenever a given singularity type is properly defined and the stratum possesses good geometric properties. We consider in details the generalized Newton-non-degenerate…
We study equi-singular strata of plane curves with two singular points of prescribed types. The method of the previous work [Kerner06] is generalized to this case. In particular we consider the enumerative problem for plane curves with two singular points of linear singularity types. First the problem for two ordinary multiple points of fixed multiplicities is solved. Then the enumeration for arbitrary linear types is reduced to the case of ordinary multiple points and to the understanding of "merging" of singular points. Many examples and numerical answers are given.
We prove that the moduli space of double covers ramified at two points $\mathcal{R}_{g,2}$ is uniruled for $3\leq g\leq 6$ and of general type for $g\geq 16$. Furthermore, we consider Prym-canonical divisorial strata in the moduli space $\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g$ parametrizing $n$-pointed Prym curves, and we compute their classes in $\mathrm{Pic}_\mathbb{Q}(\overline{\mathcal{C}^n\mathcal{R}}_g)$.
We enumerate plane complex algebraic curves of a given degree with one singularity of any given topological type. Our approach is to compute the homology classes of the corresponding equisingular strata in the parameter spaces of plane curves. We suggest a recursive procedure, which is based on the intersection theory combined with liftings and degenerations. The procedure computes the homology class in question whenever a given singularity type is defined. Our method does not require the knowledge of all the possible deformations of a given singularity.
Algebraic and geometric structures associated with Birkhoff strata of Sato Grassmannian are analyzed. It is shown that each Birkhoff stratum $Σ_S$ contains a subset $W_{\hat{S}}$ of points for which each fiber of the corresponding tautological subbundle $TB_{W_S}$ is closed with respect to multiplication. Algebraically $TB_{W_S}$ is an infinite family of infinite-dimensional commutative associative algebras and geometrically it is an infinite tower of families of algebraic curves. For the big cell the subbundle $TB_{W_\varnothing}$ represents the tower of families of normal rational (Veronese)…
The Bruhat stratification for Shimura varieties of PEL type is studied. In the Siegel case this stratification is a scheme-theoretic variant of the stratification by the a-number. We show that all Bruhat strata are smooth and determine their dimensions. We also prove that the closure of a Bruhat stratum is a union of Bruhat strata and describe which Bruhat strata are contained in the closure of a given Bruhat stratum.
In this paper we study the problem of extension of holomorphic sections of line bundles/vector bundles from reduced unions of strata of divisors. An extension theorem of Ohsawa--Takegoshi type is proved. As consequences we deduce several qualitative results on extension from snc divisors and generic global generation of vector bundles.

Each Scorza variety and its secant varieties in the ambient projective space are identified, in the realm of singular Poisson-Kaehler geometry, in terms of projectivizations of holomorphic nilpotent orbits in suitable Lie algebras of hermitian type, the holomorphic nilpotent orbits, in turn, being affine varieties. The ambient projective space acquires an exotic Kaehler structure, the closed stratum being the Scorza variety and the closures of the higher strata its secant varieties. In this fashion, the secant varieties become exotic projective varieties. In the rank 3 case, the four regular S…
Each point $x$ in Gr$(r,n)$ corresponds to an $r \times n$ matrix $A_x$ which gives rise to a matroid $M_x$ on its columns. Gel'fand, Goresky, MacPherson, and Serganova showed that the sets $\{y \in \mathrm{Gr}(r,n) | M_y = M_x\}$ form a stratification of Gr$(r,n)$ with many beautiful properties. However, results of Mnëv and Sturmfels show that these strata can be quite complicated, and in particular may have arbitrary singularities. We study the ideals $I_x$ of matroid varieties, the Zariski closures of these strata. We construct several classes of examples based on theorems from projective g…
Previous work by the authors (this journal, \vol{60} (2008), 1009-1044) produced equations that hold on certain loci of the Jacobian of a cyclic $C_{rs}$ curve. A curve of this type generalizes elliptic curves, and the equations in question are given in terms of (Klein's) generalization of Weierstrass' $σ$-function. The key tool is a matrix with entries that are polynomial in the coordinates of the affine plane model of the curve, thus can be expressed in terms of $σ$ and its derivatives. The key geometric loci on the Jacobian of the curve give a stratification of Brill-Noether type. The resul…
The classical additive Deligne-Simpson problem is the existence problem for Fuchsian connections with residues at the singular points in specified adjoint orbits. Crawley-Boevey found the solution in 2003 by reinterpreting the problem in terms of quiver varieties. A more general version of this problem, solved by Hiroe, allows additional unramified irregular singularities. We apply the theory of fundamental and regular strata due to Bremer and Sage to formulate a version of the Deligne-Simpson problem in which certain ramified singularities are allowed. These allowed singular points are called…
We explain how the nilpotent singular support condition introduced into the geometric Langlands conjecture by Arinkin and Gaitsgory arises naturally from the point of view of N = 4 supersymmetric gauge theory. We define what it means in topological quantum field theory to restrict a category of boundary conditions to the full subcategory of objects compatible with a fixed choice of vacuum, both in functorial field theory and in the language of factorization algebras. For B-twisted N = 4 gauge theory with gauge group G, the moduli space of vacua is equivalent to h*/W , and the nilpotent singula…
