This note is devoted, after the result of Harui, arXiv:1306.5842, to solve some natural questions for non-singular plane curves of degree $d$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of zero characteristic.
Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from two. If X admits a nontrivial automorphism σthat fixes pointwise all the order two points of Pic}^0(X), then we prove that X is hyperelliptic with σbeing the unique hyperelliptic involution. As a corollary, if a nontrivial automorphisms σ' of X fixes pointwise all the theta characteristics on X, then X is hyperelliptic with σ' being its hyperelliptic involution.
We give a way to construct group of pseudo-automorphisms of rational varieties of any dimension that fix pointwise the image of a cubic hypersurface of $P^n. These group are free products of involutions, and most of their elements have dynamical degree >1. Moreover, the Picard group of the varieties obtained is not big, if the dimension is at least 3. We also answer a question of E. Bedford on the existence of birational maps of the plane that cannot be lifted to automorphisms of dynamical degree >1, even if we compose them with an automorphism of the plane.
We present finite sets of generators of the full automorphism groups of three singular K3 surfaces, on which the alternating group of degree 6 acts symplectically. We also present a finite set of generators of the full automorphism group of an associated Enriques surface, on which the Mathieu group M_{10} acts.
It is proved that the group of birational automorphisms of a three-dimensional double quadric with a singular point arising from a double point on the branch divisor is a semidirect product of the free group generated by birational involutions of a special form and the group of regular automorphisms. The proof is based on the method of `untwisting' maximal singularities of linear systems.
A recent paper of Bresciani and Vistoli studies fields of moduli using residual gerbes. One of their applications is to twisted forms of quotient singularities. We discuss a direct approach to automorphisms and twisted forms, which also works in many wildly ramified cases.
We give a system of generators of the automorphism group of the singular $K3$ surface of discriminant 7. This system of generators consists of the inversion involutions of some elliptic fibrations with a section together with ${\rm PGL}_2(7)$.
The paper completes the study of symmetries of parabolic function singularities with relation to complex crystallographic groups that was started in \cite{GM,X9}. We classify smoothable automorphisms of $P_8$ singularities which split the kernel of the intersection form on the second homology. For such automorphisms, the monodromy groups acting on the duals to the eigenspaces with degenerate intersection form are then identified as some of complex affine reflection groups tabled in \cite{P}.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let X be a curve over K of genus g>1 and 2-rank r>0. For 2-subgroups S of the K-automorphism group Aut(X) of X, the Nakajima bound is |S| < 4g-3. For every g=2^h+1>8, we construct a curve X attaining the Nakajima bound and determine its relevant properties: X is a bielliptic curve with r=g, and its K-automorphism group has a dihedral K-automorphism group of order 4(g-1) which fixes no point in X. Moreover, we provide a classification of 2-groups S of K-automorphisms not fixing a point of X and such that |S|> 2g-1.
Let X be a complex algebraic K3 surface or a supersingular K3 surface in odd characteristic. We present an algorithm by which, under certain assumptions on X, we can calculate a finite set of generators of the image of the natural homomorphism from the automorphism group of X to the orthogonal group of the Néron-Severi lattice of X. We then apply this algorithm to certain complex K3 surfaces, among which are singular K3 surfaces whose transcendental lattices are of small discriminants.
In this note we interpret a recent result of Gaberdiel, Hohenegger and Volpato in terms of derived equivalences of K3 surfaces. We prove that there is a natural bijection between subgroups of the Conway group Co_1 with invariant lattice of rank at least four and groups of symplectic derived equivalences of D(Coh(X)) of projective K3 surfaces fixing a stability condition.
In this paper we classify three-dimensional singular cubic hypersurfaces with an action of a finite group $G$, which are not $G$-rational, are not $G$-birationally isomorphic to a quadric and have no birational structure of $G$-Mori fiber space with the base of positive dimension. Also we prove the $A_{5}$ -birational superrigidity of the Segre cubic.
Henn and Komiya-Kuribayashi listed, independently, the groups $G$ for which $\widetilde{M_3^{Pl}(G)}$ is non-empty. In this paper, we determine the loci $\widetilde{M_6^{Pl}(G)}$, corresponding to non-singular degree $5$ projective plane curves, which are non-empty. Also, we present the analogy of Henn's results for quartic curves concerning non-singular plane model equations associated to these loci.
Let X be a singular real rational surface obtained from a smooth real rational surface by performing weighted blow-ups. Denote by Aut(X) the group of algebraic automorphisms of X into itself. Let n be a natural integer and let e=[e_1,...,e_l] be a partition of n. Denote by X^e the set of l-tuples (P_1,...,P_l) of distinct nonsingular curvilinear infinitely near points of X of orders (e_1,...,e_l). We show that the group Aut(X) acts transitively on X^e. This statement generalizes earlier work where the case of the trivial partition e=[1,...,1] was treated under the supplementary condition that …
We classify del Pezzo surfaces with Du Val singularities that have infinite automorphism groups, and describe the connected components of their automorphisms groups.
We survey some recent progress in the study of algebraic varieties X with log terminal singularities, especially, the uni-ruledness of the smooth locus X^0 of X, the fundamental group of X^0 and the automorphisms group on (smooth or singular) X when dim X = 2. The full automorphism groups of a few interesting types of K3 surfaces are described, mainly by Keum-Kondo. We conjecture that when X is Q-Fano then X^0 has a finite fundamental group, which had been proved if either dim X < 3 or the Fano index is bigger than dim X - 2. We also conjecture that when X is a log Enriques (e.g. a normal K3 o…
In this paper, we prove a general principle of lifting an automorphism from positive characteristic to zero characteristic. We based on the principle to prove the automorphism group of Fano variety of cubic threefold (fourfold) acts on its cohomology group faithfully. We also prove the same result for a singular cubic threefold (fourfold) with one ordinary double singularity. As an application, we classify the automorphism groups of cubic fourfolds with small middle Picard number over complex numbers.
We consider a normal complete rational variety with a torus action of complexity one. In the main results, we determine the roots of the automorphism group and give an explicit description of the root system of its semisimple part. The results are applied to the study of almost homogeneous varieties. For example, we describe all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) del Pezzo k*-surfaces of Picard number one and all almost homogeneous (possibly singular) Fano threefolds of Picard number one having a reductive automorphism group with two-dimensional maximal torus.
From the degree zero part of logarithmic vector fields along an algebraic hypersurface singularity we indentify the maximal multihomogeneity of a defining equation in form of a maximal algebraic torus in the embedded automorphism group. We show that all such maximal tori are conjugate and in one-to-one correspondence to maxmimal tori in the degree zero jet of the embedded automorphism group. The result is motivated by Kyoji Saito's characterization of quasihomogeneity for isolated hypersurface singularities and extends its formal version and a result of Hauser and Mueller.
We classify Enriques involutions on a K3 surface, up to conjugation in the automorphism group, in terms of lattice theory. We enumerate such involutions on singular K3 surfaces with transcendental lattice of discriminant smaller than or equal to 36. For 11 of these K3 surfaces, we apply Borcherds method to compute the automorphism group of the Enriques surfaces covered by them. In particular, we investigate the structure of the two most algebraic Enriques surfaces.
In this paper, we list all cyclic automorphisms subgroups $H$ for which there exists a smooth projective non-hyperelliptic sextic curve $C$ with $H\preceq Aut(C)$. Furthermore, we attach to each group a defining equation of a plane sextic curve having exactly this group as cyclic automorphisms subgroup. These equations cover up to isomorphism all plane non-singular sextic curves having some non-trivial automorphism.
We consider possibly singular rational projective k*-surfaces and provide an explicit description of the unit component of the automorphism group in terms of isotropy group orders and intersection numbers of suitable invariant curves. As an application, we characterize the almost homogeneous rational projective k*-surfaces and we specify the two-dimensional groups acting almost transitively as well as the corresponding homogeneous spaces.
We present an algorithm to compute the automorphism group of a Mori dream space. As an example calculation, we determine the automorphism groups of singular cubic surfaces with general parameters. The strategy is to study graded automorphisms of affine algebras graded by a finitely generated abelian groups and apply the results to the Cox ring. Besides the application to Mori dream spaces, our results could be used for symmetry based computing, e.g. for Gröbner bases or tropical varieties.
We study the connected component of the automorphism group of a cubic hypersurface over complex numbers. When the cubic hypersurface has nonzero Hessian, this group is usually small. But there are examples with unusually large automorphism groups: the secants of Severi varieties. Can we characterize them by the property of having unusually large automorphism groups? We study this question from the viewpoint of prolongations of the Lie algebras. Our result characterizes the secants of Severi varieties, among cubic hypersurfaces with nonzero Hessian and smooth singular locus, in terms of prolong…
In this note we determine, for an arbitrary but a fixed degree $d$, an algorithm to list the possible values $m$ for which $M_g^{Pl}(\mathbb{Z}/m)$ is non-empty where $\mathbb{Z}/m$ denotes the cyclic group of order $m$. In particular, we prove that $m$ should divide one of the integers: $d-1$, $d$, $d^2-3d+3$, $(d-1)^2$, $d(d-2)$ or $d(d-1)$. Secondly, consider a curve $δ\in M_g^{Pl}$ with $g=(d-1)(d-2)/2$ such that $Aut(δ)$ has an element of "very large" order, in the sense that this element is of order $d^2-3d+3$, $(d-1)^2$, $d(d-2)$ or $d(d-1)$. Then we investigate the groups $G$ for which…
We obtain the list of automorphism groups for smooth plane sextic curves over an algebraically closed field K of characteristic p=0 or p>21. Moreover, we assign to each group a geometrically complete family over K describing its corresponding stratum, that is, a generic defining polynomial equation with parameters such that any curve in the stratum is K-isomorphic to a non-singular plane model obtained by specializing the values of those parameters over K.
The present work completes the classification of the compact Riemann surfaces of genus g with an analytic automorphism of order p (prime number) and p > g. More precisely, we construct a parameteriza- tion space for them, we compute their groups of uniformization and we compute their full automorphism groups. Also, we give affine equations for special cases and some implications on the components of the singular locus of the moduli space of smooth curves of genus g.
Trinomial hypersurfaces form a natural class of affine algebraic varieties closely connected with varieties admitting a torus action of complexity one. We investigate orbits of the automorphism group on these hypersurfaces. We prove that each nonrigid trinomial variety has finite number of orbits. We investigate singular orbits and this gives us description of all orbits for some classes of flexible trinomial hypersurfaces. Also we obtain a description of orbits for a class of hypersurfaces having a unique variable with power one in the equation.
We study upper bounds on the order of automorphisms of non-singular curves $X$ satisfying at least one of the following hypothesis: 1) $X$ is an $m$-sheeted covering of exactly one non-singular curve of genus $γ$, where $m$ is prime; 2) the center of the group of automorphisms of $X$ is non-trivial.
Let $\mathcal{X}$ be a (projective, non-singular, irreducible) curve of even genus $g(\mathcal{X}) \geq 2$ defined over an algebraically closed field $K$ of characteristic $p$. If the $p$-rank $γ(\mathcal{X})$ equals $g(\mathcal{X})$, then $\mathcal{X}$ is ordinary. In this paper, we deal with large automorphism groups $G$ of ordinary curves. Under the hypotheses that $p = 2$, $g(\mathcal{X})$ is even and $G$ is solvable, we prove that $|G| < 35(g(\mathcal{X}) +1)^{3/2}$.
We study the singular locus on the algebraic surface $§_n$ of genus 2 curves with a $(n, n)$-split Jacobian. Such surface was computed by Shaska in \cite{deg3} for $n=3$, and Shaska at al. in \cite{deg5} for $n=5$. We show that the singular locus for $n=2$ is exactly th locus of the curves of automorphism group $D_4$ or $D_6$. For $n=3$ we use a birational parametrization of the surface $§_3$ discovered in \cite{deg3} to show that the singular locus is a 0-dimensional subvariety consisting exactly of three genus 2 curves (up to isomorphism) which have automorphism group $D_4$ or $D_6$. We furt…
In this note we shall determine all actions of groups of prime order p with p > 3 on Gorenstein del Pezzo (singular) surfaces Y of Picard number 1. We show that every order-p element in Aut(Y) (= Aut(Y'), Y' being the minimal resolution of Y) is lifted from a projective transformation of the projective plane. We also determine when Aut(Y) is finite in terms of the self intersection of the canonical divisor of Y, Sing(Y) and the number of singular members in the anti-canonical linear system of Y. In particular, we show that either |Aut(Y)| = 2^a 3^b for some 0 < a+b < 8, or for every prime p > …
Let $A$ be an abelian surface and let $G$ be a finite group of automorphisms of $A$ fixing the origin. Assume that the analytic representation of $G$ is irreducible. We give a classification of the pairs $(A,G)$ such that the quotient $A/G$ is smooth. In particular, we prove that $A=E^2$ with $E$ an elliptic curve and that $A/G\simeq\mathbb{P}^2$ in all cases. Moreover, for fixed $E$, there are only finitely many pairs $(E^2,G)$ up to isomorphism. This fills a small gap in the literature and completes the classification of smooth quotients of abelian varieties by finite groups fixing the origi…
We show that a homology plane of general type has at worst a single cyclic quotient singular point. An example of such a surface with a singular point does exist. We also show that the automorphism group of a smooth contractible surface of general type is cyclic.
We use classification of non-symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces to obtain a partial classification of log del Pezzo surfaces of index three. We can classify those with "Multiple Smooth Divisor Property", whose definition we will give. Our methods include the definition of right resolutions of quotient singularities of index three and some analysis of automorphism-stable elliptic fibrations on K3 surfaces. In particular we find several log del Pezzo surfaces of Picard number one with non-toric singularities of index three.
We prove birational rigidity and calculate the group of birational automorphisms of a nodal Q-factorial double cover $X$ of a smooth three-dimensional quadric branched over a quartic section. We also prove that $X$ is Q-factorial provided that it has at most 11 singularities; moreover, we give an example of a non-Q-factorial variety of this type with 12 simple double singularities.
If $F$ is a polynomial automorphism over a finite field $\F_q$ in dimension $n$, then it induces a bijection $π_{q^r}(F)$ of $(\F_{q^r})^n$ for every $r\in \N^*$. We say that $F$ can be `mimicked' by elements of a certain group of automorphisms $\mathcal{G}$ if there are $g_r\in \mathcal{G}$ such that $π_{q^r}(g_r)=π_{q^r}(F)$. We show that the Nagata automorphism (and any other automorphism in three variables fixing one variable) can be mimicked by tame automorphisms. This on the one hand removes the hope of showing that such an automorphism is non-tame by studying one bijection it induces, b…
We study the nilpotent part $N'$ of a pseudo-periodic automorphism $h$ of a real oriented surface with boundary $Σ$. We associate a quadratic form $Q$ defined on the first homology group (relative to the boundary) of the surface $Σ$. Using the twist formula and techniques from mapping class group theory, we prove that the form $\tilde{Q}$ obtained after killing ${\ker N}$ is positive definite if all the screw numbers associated with certain orbits of annuli are positive. We also prove that the restriction of $\tilde Q$ to the absolute homology group of $Σ$ is even whenever the quotient of the …
We present a library autgradalg.lib for the free computer algebra system Singular to compute automorphisms of integral, finitely generated $\mathbb{C}$-algebras that are graded pointedly by a finitely generated abelian group. It implements the algorithms developed in 'Computing automorphisms of Mori dream spaces'. We apply the algorithms to Mori dream spaces and investigate the automorphism groups of a series of Fano varieties.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $0$ and $\mathcal{M}_d$ the moduli space of rational maps on $\mathbb{P}^1$ of degree $d$ over $k$. This paper describes the automorphism loci $A\subset \mathrm{Rat}_d$ and $\mathcal{A}\subset \mathcal{M}_d$ and the singular locus $\mathcal{S}\subset\mathcal{M}_d$. In particular, we determine which groups occur as subgroups of the automorphism group of some $[ϕ]\in\mathcal{M}_d$ for a given $d$ and calculate the dimension of the locus. Next, we prove an analogous theorem to the Rauch-Popp-Oort characterization of singular points on the…
We slightly extend a result of Oguiso on birational or automorphism groups (resp. of Lazić - Peternell on Morrison-Kawamata cone conjecture) from Calabi-Yau manifolds of Picard number two to arbitrary singular varieties X (resp. to klt Calabi-Yau pairs in broad sense) of Picard number two. When X has only klt singularities and is not a complex torus, we show that either Aut(X) is almost cyclic, or it has only finitely many connected components.
In this paper we prove that generic small partial smoothings of Kahler-Einstein (KE) Del Pezzo orbifolds with only nodal singularities, and with no non-zero holomorphic vector fields, admit orbifold KE metrics which are close in the Gromov-Hausdorff sense to the original KE metric.
We consider the motivic Hall algebra of coherent sheaves over an irreducible reduced projective curve of arithmetic genus $1$. We introduce the composition subalgebra in the singular curve case, and show that it is isomorphic to the composition subalgebra for a smooth elliptic curve. As in the case of smooth elliptic case studied by Burban and Schiffmann, the reduced Drinfeld double of the composition subalgebra is isomorphic to the quantum toroidal algebra for $\mathfrak{gl}_1$ (also called Ding-Iohara-Miki algebra), and it inherits automorphisms induced from equivalences of the associated de…
We classify, up to automorphisms, the elliptic fibrations on the singular K3 surface $X$ whose transcendental lattice is isometric to $\langle 6\rangle\oplus \langle 2\rangle$.
The automorphism group ${\rm Aut}\: X$ of a weighted homogeneous normal surface singularity $X$ has a maximal reductive algebraic subgroup $G$ which contains every reductive algebraic subgroup of ${\rm Aut}\: X$ up to conjugation. In all cases except the cyclic quotient singularities the connected component $G_1$ of the unit equals ${\Bbb C}^*$. The induced action of $G$ on the minimal good resolution of $X$ embeds the finite group $G/G_1$ into the automorphism group of the central curve $E_0$ of the exceptional divisor. We describe $G/G_1$ as a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}\: E_0$ in case $E_0$ is r…
Due to the orbifold singularities, the intersection numbers on the moduli space of curves $\bar{\sM}_{g,n}$ are in general rational numbers rather than integers. We study the properties of the denominators of these intersection numbers and their relationship with the orders of automorphism groups of stable curves. In particular, we prove a conjecture of Itzykson and Zuber. We also present a conjectural multinomial type numerical property for Hodge integrals.
Suppose that $X$ is a smooth, projective threefold over $\mathbb C$ and that $ϕ: X \to X$ is an automorphism of positive entropy. We show that one of the following must hold, after replacing $ϕ$ by an iterate: i) the canonical class of $X$ is numerically trivial; ii) $ϕ$ is imprimitive; iii) $ϕ$ is not dynamically minimal. As a consequence, we show that if a smooth threefold $M$ does not admit a primitive automorphism of positive entropy, then no variety constructed by a sequence of smooth blow-ups of $M$ can admit a primitive automorphism of positive entropy. In explaining why the method does…
