Let X be an irreducible smooth projective curve, of genus at least two, defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from two. If X admits a nontrivial automorphism σthat fixes pointwise all the order two points of Pic}^0(X), then we prove that X is hyperelliptic with σbeing the unique hyperelliptic involution. As a corollary, if a nontrivial automorphisms σ' of X fixes pointwise all the theta characteristics on X, then X is hyperelliptic with σ' being its hyperelliptic involution.
Let $J$ be the Jacobian of a smooth projective complex curve $C$ which admits non-trivial automorphisms, and let $A(J)$ be the ring of algebraic cycles on $J$ with rational coefficients modulo algebraic equivalence. We present new tautological rings in $A(J)$ which extend in a natural way the tautological ring studied by Beauville (Compos Math 140(3):683-688, 2004). We then show there exist tautological rings induced on special complementary abelian subvarieties of $J$.
This note is devoted, after the result of Harui, arXiv:1306.5842, to solve some natural questions for non-singular plane curves of degree $d$ over an algebraically closed field $K$ of zero characteristic.
In this paper, we will first show that, the homogeneous polynomials which satisfy the Jacobian condition are injective on the lines that pass through the origin. Secondly, we will show that $F$ and $G'$ are paired, where $F$ is a Druzkowski map and $G'$ is a cubic homogeneous polynomial which related to $F$. Finally, we will find a more exactly bound for the degree of $F^{-1}$, where $F$ is a invertible map.
The purpose of this review paper is the collection, systematization and discussion of recent results concerning the quantization approach to the Jacobian conjecture, as well as certain related topics.
We investigate the decomposition of Jacobians of superelliptic curves based on their automorphisms. For curve with equation $y^n=f(x^m)$ we provide an necessary and sufficient condition in terms of $m$ and $n$ for the decomposition of the Jacobian induced by the automorphisms of the curve. Moreover, we generalize a construction in \cite{Ya} of a family of non-hyperelliptic curves $\mathcal X_{r,s} $ and determine arithmetic conditions on $r$ and $s$ that the Jacobians $\mbox{Jac} (\mathcal X_{r, s})$ decomposes.
Klein's simple group $H$ of order $168$ is the automorphism group of the plane quartic curve $C$, called Klein quartic. By Torelli Theorem, the full automorphism group $G$ of the Jacobian $J=J(C)$ is the group of order $336$, obtained by adding minus identity to $H$. The quotient variety $J/G$ can be alternatively represented as the quotient $\mathbb C^3/\tilde G$ of the complex $3$-space by the complex crystallographic group $\tilde G$, the extension of $G$ by the period lattice of the Klein quartic. Moreover, it turns out that $\tilde G$ is generated by affine complex reflections. According …
There are nontrivial dualities and parallels between polynomial algebras and the Grassmann algebras. This paper is an attempt to look at the Grassmann algebras at the angle of the Jacobian conjecture for polynomial algebras (which is the question/conjecture about the $ $ {\em Jacobian set} -- the set of all algebra endomorphisms of a polynomial algebra with the Jacobian 1 -- the Jacobian conjecture claims that the Jacobian set is a {\em group}). In this paper, we study in detail the Jacobian set for the Grassmann algebra which turns out to be a {\em group} -- the {\em Jacobian group} $Σ$ -- a …
Let $k$ be a field of characteristic zero containing a primitive fifth root of unity. Let $X/k$ be a smooth cubic threefold with an automorphism of order five, then we observe that over a finite extension of the field actually the dihedral group $D_5$ is a subgroup of ${\rm Aut}(X)$. We find that the intermediate Jacobian $J(X)$ of $X$ is isogenous to the product of an elliptic curve $E$ and the self-product of an abelian surface $B$ with real multiplication by $\mathbb{Q}(\sqrt{5})$. We give explicit models of some algebraic curves related to the construction of $J(X)$ as a Prym variety. This…
We give a way to construct group of pseudo-automorphisms of rational varieties of any dimension that fix pointwise the image of a cubic hypersurface of $P^n. These group are free products of involutions, and most of their elements have dynamical degree >1. Moreover, the Picard group of the varieties obtained is not big, if the dimension is at least 3. We also answer a question of E. Bedford on the existence of birational maps of the plane that cannot be lifted to automorphisms of dynamical degree >1, even if we compose them with an automorphism of the plane.
Let $\C$ be a genus 2 curve defined over $k$, $char (k) =0$. If $\C$ has a $(3,3)$-split Jacobian then we show that the automorphism group $Aut(\C)$ is isomorphic to one of the following: $\bZ_2, V_4, D_8$, or $D_{12}$. There are exactly six $\bC$-isomorphism classes of genus two curves $\C$ with $Aut(\C)$ isomorphic to $D_8$ (resp., $D_{12}$). %We compute their absolute invariants $i_1, i_2, i_3$. We show that exactly four (resp., three) of these classes with group $D_8$ (resp., $D_{12}$) have representatives defined over $\bQ$. We discuss some of these curves in detail and find their rationa…
Let $G$ be a finite group acting effectively on the complex affine plane. If the $G$-action commutes with an étale endomorphism $f$ of the affine plane and the order of $G$ is even then the endomorphism $f$ is an automorphism.
Let K[x,y] be the algebra of two-variable polynomials over a field K. A polynomial p=p(x, y) is called a test polynomial (for automorphisms) if, whenever ϕ(p)=p for a mapping ϕof K[x,y], this ϕmust be an automorphism. Here we show that p \in C[x,y] is a test polynomial if and only if p does not belong to any proper retract of C[x,y]. This has the following corollary that may have application to the Jacobian conjecture: if a mapping ϕof C[x,y] with invertible Jacobian matrix is ``invertible on one particular polynomial", then it is an automorphism. More formally: if there is a non-constant poly…
Recently, Barraza-Rojas have described the action of the full automorphisms group on the Fermat curve of degree $p$, for $p$ a prime integer, and obtained the group algebra decomposition of the corresponding Jacobian variety. In this short note we observe that the factors in such a decomposition are given by the Jacobian varieties of certain $p$-gonal curves.
We study the singular locus on the algebraic surface $§_n$ of genus 2 curves with a $(n, n)$-split Jacobian. Such surface was computed by Shaska in \cite{deg3} for $n=3$, and Shaska at al. in \cite{deg5} for $n=5$. We show that the singular locus for $n=2$ is exactly th locus of the curves of automorphism group $D_4$ or $D_6$. For $n=3$ we use a birational parametrization of the surface $§_3$ discovered in \cite{deg3} to show that the singular locus is a 0-dimensional subvariety consisting exactly of three genus 2 curves (up to isomorphism) which have automorphism group $D_4$ or $D_6$. We furt…
In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces with a non-large group of automorphisms of maximal order; namely, compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with a group of automorphisms of order $4g-4.$ Under the assumption that $g-1$ is prime, we provide a complete classification of them and determine isogeny decompositions of the corresponding Jacobian varieties.
In this paper, an explicit hierarchy of differential equations for the $τ$-functions defining the moduli space of curves with automorphisms as a subscheme of the Sato Grassmannian is obtained. The Schottky problem for Riemann surfaces with automorphisms consists of characterizing those p.p.a.v. that are Jacobian varieties of a curve with a non-trivial automorphism. A characterization in terms of hierarchies of p.d.e. for theta functions is also given.
We present a new technique to study Jacobian variety decompositions using subgroups of the automorphism group of the curve and the corresponding intermediate covers. In particular, this new method allows us to produce many new examples of genera for which there is a curve with completely decomposable Jacobian. These examples greatly extend the list given by Ekedahl and Serre of genera containing such curves, and provide more evidence for a positive answer to two questions they asked. Additionally, we produce new examples of families of curves, all of which have completely decomposable Jacobian…
Let X be a smooth complex projective curve with a non trivial group of automorphisms G. Let J denote the Jacobian variety of X. Given h\in G, our goal is to compute the trace of h on H^0(J,O(nΘ)) in order to decompose this space into a sum of the irreducible representations of G.
We construct modular compactifications of the universal Jacobian stack over the moduli stack of reduced curves with marked points depending on stability parameters obtained out of fixing a vector bundle on the universal curve. When restricted to the locus of stable marked curves, our compactifications are Deligne-Mumford irreducible smooth stacks endowed with projective moduli spaces and, following Esteves approach to the construction of fine compactifications of Jacobians, they parametrize torsion-free rank-1 simple sheaves satisfying a stability condition with respect to the fixed vector bun…
We construct one dimensional families of Abelian surfaces with quaternionic multiplication which also have an automorphism of order three or four. Using Barth's description of the moduli space of (2,4)-polarized Abelian surfaces, we find the Shimura curve parametrizing these Abelian surfaces in a specific case. We explicitly relate these surfaces to the Jacobians of genus two curves studied by Hashimoto and Murabayashi. We also describe a (Humbert) surface in Barth's moduli space which parametrizes Abelian surfaces with real multiplication by Z[\sqrt{2}].
In this paper we study principally polarized complex abelian varieties that admit an automorphism of order 3. It turns out that certain natural conditions on the multiplicities of its action on the differentials of the first kind do guarantee that those polarized varieties are not jacobians of curves. As an application, we get another proof of the already known (thanks to Clemens and Griffiths) fact that intermediate jacobians of certain cubic threefolds are not jacobians of curves.
In this paper we classify curves of genus 2 with group of automorphisms isomorphic to D_8 or D_12 over an arbitrary field k (of characteristic different from 2 in the D_8 case and from 2 and 3 in the D_{12} case) up to k-isomorphism. As an application of the classification of curves of genus 2 obtained, we get precise arithmetic information on their elliptic quotients and on their jacobians. Over the field k=Q, we show that the elliptic quotients of the curves with automorphisms D_8 and D_{12} are precisely the Q-curves of degrees 2 and 3, respectively, and we determine which curves have jacob…
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. We say that a polynomial automorphism f : K^n -> K^n is special if the Jacobian of f is equal to 1. We show that every (n - 1)-dimensional component H of the set Fix(f) of fixed points of a non-trivial special polynomial automorphism f : K^n -> K^n is uniruled. Moreover, we show that if f is non-special and H is an (n-1)-dimensional component of the set Fix(f), then H is smooth, irreducible and H = Fix(f) and for K = C the Euler characteristic of H is equal to 1.
Belolipetsky and Jones classified those compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ admitting a large group of automorphisms of order $λ(g-1)$, for each $λ>6,$ under the assumption that $g-1$ is a prime number. In this article we study the remaining large cases; namely, we classify Riemann surfaces admitting $5(g-1)$ and $6(g-1)$ automorphisms, with $g-1$ a prime number. As a consequence, we obtain the classification of Riemann surfaces admitting a group of automorphisms of order $3(g-1)$, with $g-1$ a prime number. We also provide isogeny decompositions of their Jacobian varieties.
Let alpha be an automorphism of a hyperelliptic curve C of genus g, and let alpha' be the automorphism of P^1 induced by alpha. Let n be the order of alpha and let n' be the order of alpha'. We show that the triple (g,n,n') completely determines the characteristic polynomial of the automorphism alpha^* of the Jacobian of C, unless n is even, n=n', and (2g+2)/n is even, in which case there are two possibilities. We give explicit formulas for the characteristic polynomial in all cases.
Let K be an algebraically closed field of characteristic 2, and let X be a curve over K of genus g>1 and 2-rank r>0. For 2-subgroups S of the K-automorphism group Aut(X) of X, the Nakajima bound is |S| < 4g-3. For every g=2^h+1>8, we construct a curve X attaining the Nakajima bound and determine its relevant properties: X is a bielliptic curve with r=g, and its K-automorphism group has a dihedral K-automorphism group of order 4(g-1) which fixes no point in X. Moreover, we provide a classification of 2-groups S of K-automorphisms not fixing a point of X and such that |S|> 2g-1.
In this paper we construct infinitely many Shimura curves contained in the locus of Jacobians of genus four curves. All Jacobians in these families are ${\mathbb Z}/3$ covers of varying elliptic curves that appear in a geometric construction of Pirola, and include an example of a Shimura-Teichmuller curve that parameterizes Jacobians that are suitable ${\mathbb Z}/6$ covers of ${\mathbb P}^1$. We compute explicitly the period matrices of the Shimura curves we construct using the original construction of Shimura for moduli spaces of abelian varieties with automorphisms.
For $p$ an odd prime number, $q_{0}=p^{t}$, and $q=p^{2t-1}$, let $\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}$ be the nonsingular model of $$ Y^{q}-Y=X^{q_{0}}(X^{q}-X). $$ In the present work, the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-rational points and the full automorphism group of $\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}$ are determined. In addition, the L-polynomial of this curve is provided, and the number of $\mathbb{F}_{q^{n}}$-rational points on the Jacobian $J_{\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}}$ is used to construct étale covers of $\mathcal{X}_{\mathcal{G}_{\mathcal{S}}}$, some with m…
Let $ K[x, y]$ be the polynomial algebra in two variables over a field $K$ of characteristic $0$. A subalgebra $R$ of $K[x, y]$ is called a retract if there is an idempotent homomorphism (a {\it retraction}, or {\it projection}) $φ: K[x, y] \to K[x, y]$ such that $φ(K[x, y]) = R$. The presence of other, equivalent, definitions of retracts provides several different methods of studying them, and brings together ideas from combinatorial algebra, homological algebra, and algebraic geometry. In this paper, we characterize all the retracts of $ K[x, y]$ up to an automorphism, and give several appli…
Using the author's inversion formula for automorphisms of the Weyl algebras with polynomial coefficients and the bound on its degree a slightly shorter (algebraic) proof is given of the result of A. Belov-Kanel and M. Kontsevich that the Jacobian Conjecture implies the Dixmier Proplem. No originality is claimed.
A closed Riemann surface $S$ is called a generalized Fermat curve of type $(p,n)$, where $p,n \geq 2$ are integers, if it admits a group $H \cong {\mathbb Z}_{p}^{n}$ of conformal automorphisms so that $S/H$ is an orbifold of genus zero with exactly $n+1$ cone points, each one of order $p$. It is known that $S$ is a fiber product of $(n-1)$ classical Fermat curves of degree $p$ and, for $(p-1)(n-1)>2$, that it is a non-hyperelliptic Riemann surface. In this paper, assuming $p$ to be a prime integer, we provide a decomposition, up to isogeny, of the Jacobian variety $JS$ as a product of Jacobia…
We find all possible isomorphisms and 3-birational maps (i.e., birational maps which induce an isomorphism between open subsets whose respective complements have codimension at least 3) between moduli spaces of parabolic vector bundles with fixed degree. We prove that every 3-birational map can be described as a composition of tensorization by a fixed line bundle, Hecke transformations, dualization, taking pullback by an isomorphism between the curves and the action of the group of automorphisms of the Jacobian variety of the curve which fix the r-torsion. In particular, we prove a Torelli typ…
In this paper we give an effective criterion as to when a positive integer q is the order of an automorphism of a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d, for every d>2, n>1, (n,d)\neq (2,4), and \gcd(q,d)=\gcd(q,d-1)=1. This allows us to give a complete criterion in the case where q=p is a prime number. In particular, we show the following result: If X is a smooth hypersurface of dimension n and degree d admitting an automorphism of prime order p then p<(d-1)^{n+1}; and if p>(d-1)^n then X is isomorphic to the Klein hypersurface, n=2 or n+2 is prime, and p=Φ_{n+2}(1-d) where Φ_{n+2} i…
We classify possible finite groups of symplectic automorphisms of K3 surfaces of order divisible by 11. The characteristic of the ground field must be equal to 11. The complete list of such groups consists of five groups: the cyclic group of order 11, $11\rtimes 5$, $L_2(11)$ and the Mathieu groups $M_{11}$, $M_{22}$. We also show that a surface $X$ admitting an automorphism $g$ of order 11 admits a $g$-invariant elliptic fibration with the Jacobian fibration isomorphic to one of explicitly given elliptic K3 surfaces.
In this paper it is established that all two-dimensional polynomial automorphisms over a regular ring R are stably tame. In the case R is a Dedekind Q-algebra, some stronger results are obtained. A key element in the proof is a theorem which yields the following corollary: Over an Artinian ring A all two-dimensional polynomial automorphisms having Jacobian determinant one are stably tame, and are tame if A is a Q-algebra. Another crucial ingredient, of interest in itself, is that stable tameness is a local property: If an automorphism is locally tame, then it is stably tame.
In this article we study compact Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with an automorphism of prime order $g+1.$ The main result provides a classification of such surfaces. In addition, we give a description of them as algebraic curves, determine and realise their full automorphism groups and compute their fields of moduli. We also study some aspects of their Jacobian varieties such as isogeny decompositions and complex multiplication. Finally, we determine the period matrix of the Accola-Maclachlan curve of genus four.
In a recent paper it has been established that over an Artinian ring R all two-dimensional polynomial automorphisms having Jacobian determinant one are tame if R is a Q-algebra. This is a generalization of the famous Jung-Van der Kulk Theorem, which deals with the case that R is a field (of any characteristic). Here we will show that for tameness over an Artinian ring, the Q-algebra assumption is really needed: we will give, for local Artinian rings with square-zero principal maximal ideal, a complete description of the tame automorphism subgroup. This will lead to an example of a non-tame aut…

Suppose K is a field of characteristic 0, $K_a$ is its algebraic closure, p is an odd prime. Suppose, $f(x) \in K[x]$ is a polynomial of degree $n \ge 5$ without multiple roots. Let us consider a curve $C: y^p=f(x)$ and its jacobian J(C). It is known that the ring End(J(C)) of all $K_a$-endomorphisms of J(C) contains the ring $Z[ζ_p]$ of integers in the pth cyclotomic field (generated by obvious automorphisms of C). We prove that $End(J(C))=Z[ζ_p]$ if the Galois group of f over K is either the symmetric group $S_n$ or the alternating group $A_n$.
