In this paper we classify curves of genus 2 with group of automorphisms isomorphic to D_8 or D_12 over an arbitrary field k (of characteristic different from 2 in the D_8 case and from 2 and 3 in the D_{12} case) up to k-isomorphism.
As an application of the classification of curves of genus 2 obtained, we get precise arithmetic information on their elliptic quotients and on their jacobians. Over the field k=Q, we show that the elliptic quotients of the curves with automorphisms D_8 and D_{12} are precisely the Q-curves of degrees 2 and 3, respectively, and we determine which curves have jacobians of GL_2-type.
In arithmetic and algebraic geometry, superspecial (s.sp.\ for short) curves are one of the most important objects to be studied, with applications to cryptography and coding theory. If $g \geq 4$, it is not even known whether there exists such a curve of genus $g$ in general characteristic $p > 0$, and in the case of $g=4$, several computational approaches to search for those curves have been proposed. In the genus-$4$ hyperelliptic case, Kudo-Harashita proposed a generic algorithm to enumerate all s.sp.\ curves, and recently Ohashi-Kudo-Harashita presented an algorithm specific to the case w…
Let $\C$ be a genus 2 curve defined over $k$, $char (k) =0$. If $\C$ has a $(3,3)$-split Jacobian then we show that the automorphism group $Aut(\C)$ is isomorphic to one of the following: $\bZ_2, V_4, D_8$, or $D_{12}$. There are exactly six $\bC$-isomorphism classes of genus two curves $\C$ with $Aut(\C)$ isomorphic to $D_8$ (resp., $D_{12}$). %We compute their absolute invariants $i_1, i_2, i_3$. We show that exactly four (resp., three) of these classes with group $D_8$ (resp., $D_{12}$) have representatives defined over $\bQ$. We discuss some of these curves in detail and find their rationa…
We study genus 2 function fields with elliptic subfields of degree 2. The locus $Ł_2$ of these fields is a 2-dimensional subvariety of the moduli space $\mathcal M_2$ of genus 2 fields. An equation for $Ł_2$ is already in the work of Clebsch and Bolza. We use a birational parameterization of $Ł_2$ by affine 2-space to study the relation between the j-invariants of the degree 2 elliptic subfields. This extends work of Geyer, Gaudry, Stichtenoth and others. We find a 1-dimensional family of genus 2 curves having exactly two isomorphic elliptic subfields of degree 2; this family is parameterized …
In this note, we give a so-called representative classification for the strata by automorphism group of smooth $\bar{k}$-plane curves of genus $6$, where $\bar{k}$ is a fixed separable closure of a field $k$ of characteristic $p = 0$ or $p > 13$. We start with a classification already obtained by the first author and we use standard techniques. Interestingly, in the way to get these families for the different strata, we find two remarkable phenomenons that did not appear before. One is the existence of a non $0$-dimensional final stratum of plane curves. At a first sight it may sound odd, but …
We show all the possible structures of finite subgroups of the automorphism groups of elliptic curves. Here the automorphism means the biholomorphic transformation. Using the result, we determine every Galois group G at outer Galois point for genus-one curve with singular points. In particular, if G is abelian, then its order is at most nine. However if not so, the order is unbounded. Furthermore, we give every defining equation of the curve with the Galois point in the case where G is abelian.
We present three families of pairs of geometrically non-isomorphic curves whose Jacobians are isomorphic to one another as unpolarized abelian varieties. Each family is parametrized by an open subset of P^1. The first family consists of pairs of genus-2 curves whose equations are given by simple expressions in the parameter; the curves in this family have reducible Jacobians. The second family also consists of pairs of genus-2 curves, but generically the curves in this family have absolutely simple Jacobians. The third family consists of pairs of genus-3 curves, one member of each pair being a…
For a curve $X$ of genus $>1$ defined over a finite field, we present a criterion which allows us to state the non existence of automorphisms of order a power of a rational prime. We show how this criterion can be used to determine the automorphism group of some modular curves of high genus.
Let $k$ be an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p >0$. Suppose $g \geq 3$ and $0 \leq f \leq g$. We prove there is a smooth projective $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with no non-trivial automorphisms. In addition, we prove there is a smooth projective hyperelliptic $k$-curve of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ whose only non-trivial automorphism is the hyperelliptic involution. The proof involves computations about the dimension of the moduli space of (hyperelliptic) $k$-curves of genus $g$ and $p$-rank $f$ with extra automorphisms.
We use rigid analytic uniformization by Schottky groups to give a bound for the order of the abelian subgroups of the automorphism group of a Mumford curve in terms of its genus.
We construct a projective variety with discrete, non-finitely generated automorphism group. As an application, we show that there exists a complex projective variety with infinitely many non-isomorphic real forms.
For a hyperbolic toral automorphism, we construct a profinite completion of an isomorphic copy of the homoclinic group of its right action using isomorphic copies of the periodic data of its left action. The resulting profinite group has a natural module structure over a ring determined by the right action of the hyperbolic toral automorphism. This module is an invariant of conjugacy that provides means in which to characterize when two similar hyperbolic toral automorphisms are conjugate or not. In particular, this shows for two similar hyperbolic toral automorphisms with module isomorphic le…
A Mumford curve of genus g (>1) over a non-archimedean valued field k of positive characteristic has at most max{12(g-1), 2 g^(1/2) (g^(1/2)+1)^2} automorphisms. This bound is sharp in the sense that there exist Mumford curves of arbitrary high genus that attain it (they are fibre products of suitable Artin-Schreier curves). The proof provides (via its action on the Bruhat-Tits tree) a classification of discontinuous subgroups of PGL(2,k) that are normalizers of Schottky groups of Mumford curves with more than 12(g-1) automorphisms. As an application, it is shown that all automorphisms of the …
The purpose of this paper is to propose an efficient method to compute the automorphism group of an arbitrary hyperelliptic function field (genus>1) over a given ground field of characteristic >2 as well as over its algebraic extensions.
We derive equations for the modular curve $X_{ns}(11)$ associated to a non-split Cartan subgroup of $\,\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbf{F}_{11})$. This allows us to compute the automorphism group of the curve and show that it is isomorphic to Klein's four group.
We determine the isomorphism class of the Brauer groups of certain nonrational genus zero extensions of number fields. In particular, for all genus zero extensions E of the rational numbers Q that are split by Q(\sqrt{2}), Br(E) is isomorphic to Br(Q(t)).
