In this note we focus on the defect of singular plane curve that was recently introduced by Dimca. Roughly speaking, the defect of a reduced plane curve measures the discrepancy from the property of being a free curve. We find some lower-bound on the defect for certain classes of irreducible plane curves admitting nodes, ordinary cusps and ordinary triple points. The main result of the note tells us that reduced simply singular plane curves with sufficiently high Arnold exponents are never free.
We study the classification of plane curve singularities in arbitrary characteristic. We first give a bound for the determinacy of a plane curve singularity with respect to pararametrization equivalence in terms of its conductor. Then we classify parametrization simple plane curve singularities which are irreducible by giving a concrete list of normal forms of equations and parametrizations. In characteristic zero, the classification of parametrization simple irreducible plane curve singularities was achieved by Bruce and Gaffney.
We explore the existence of irreducible and reducible arc-sections in an irreducible hypersurface singularity germ along finite projections. In particular we provide examples of irreducible isolated hypersurface singularities for which no irreducible arc-sections exist, and show that reducible ones always exist. Moreover, we give an algorithm to check if a given projection allows irreducible arc-sections, and find them if they exist.
In 1982, Tamaki Yano proposed a conjecture predicting the set of b-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity germ which is generic in its equisingularity class. In \cite{ACLM-Yano2} we proved the conjecture for the case in which the germ has two Puiseux pairs and its algebraic monodromy has distinct eigenvalues. In this article we aim to study the Bernstein polynomial for any function with the hypotheses above. In particular the set of all common roots of those Bernstein polynomials is given. We provide also bounds for some analytic invariants of singularities and illustrate the comp…
\noindent Let $μ(f)$ resp. $c(f)$ be the Milnor number resp. the degree of the conductor of an irreducible power series $f\in \bK[[x,y]]$, where $\bK$ is an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p\geq 0$. It is well-known that $μ(f)\geq c(f)$. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the equality $μ(f)=c(f)$ in terms of the semigroup associated with $f$, provided that $p>\ord f$.
Germs of plane curve singularities can be classified accordingly to their equisingularity type. For singularities over C, this important data coincides with the topological class. In this paper, we characterise a family of singularities, containing irreducible ones, whose equisingularity type can be computed in quasi-linear time with respect to the discriminant valuation of a Weierstrass equation.
In 1982, Yano proposed a conjecture predicting the $b$-exponents of an irreducible plane curve singularity which is generic in its equisingularity class. In this article we prove the conjecture for the case of two Puiseux pairs and monodromy with distinct eigenvalues. The hypothesis on the monodromy implies that the $b$-exponents coincide with the opposite of the roots of the Bernstein polynomial, and we compute the roots of the Bernstein polynomial.
The splice quotients are an interesting class of normal surface singularities with rational homology sphere links, defined by W. Neumann and J. Wahl. If Gamma is a tree of rational curves that satisfies certain combinatorial conditions, then there exist splice quotients with resolution graph Gamma. Suppose the equation z^n=f(x,y) defines a surface X_{f,n} with an isolated singularity at the origin in C^3. For f irreducible, we completely characterize, in terms of n and a variant of the Puiseux pairs of f, those X_{f,n} for which the resolution graph satisfies the combinatorial conditions that …
We study the space of arcs on a singularity of the form xy=f(z_1,..., z_n) and prove 2 main results. (i) The number of irreducible components equals the multiplicity of f minus 1. (ii) If n>1 and the leading homogeneous term of f is not a perfect square then the Nash map from the set of irreducible components to the set of essential divisors is not surjective.
In this paper we give a positive answer to a question of Dimca and Greuel about the quotient between the Milnor and the Tjurina numbers for any irreducible germ of plane curve singularity. This result is based on a closed formula for the minimal Tjurina number of an equisingularity class in terms of the sequence of multiplicities of the strict transform along a resolution. The key points for the proof are previous results by Genzmer, Wall and Mattei.
The log canonical thresholds of irreducible quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularities are computed, using an explicit list of pole candidates for the motivic zeta function found by the last two authors.
We define defect for hypersurfaces with A-D-E singularities in complex projective normal Cohen-Macaulay fourfolds having some vanishing properties of Bott-type and prove formulae for Hodge numbers of big resolutions of such hypersurfaces. We compute Hodge numbers of Calabi-Yau manifolds obtained as small resolutions of cuspidal triple sextics and double octics with higher A_j singularities.
We prove that if X is a locally complete intersection variety, then X has all the jet schemes irreducible if and only if X has canonical singularities. After embedding X in a smooth variety Y, we use motivic integration to express the condition that X has irreducible jet schemes in terms of data coming from an embedded resolution of X in Y. We show that this condition is equivalent with having canonical singularities. In the appendix, this result is used to prove a generalization of Kostant's freeness theorem to the setting of jet schemes.
We prove that if two plane curve singularities are equisingular, then they are topologically equivalent. The method we will use is P.~Fortuny~Ayuso's who proved this result for irreducible plane curve singularities.
We can associate with any irreducible curve singularity (ics) a numerical semigroup. Two ics are said to be equisingular if they have the same semigroup. Two equisingular ics have the same Milnor number. Conversely, The set of ics with a given Milnor number is a union of equisingular classes. Here we study ics from an algorithmic viewpoint, by using the notion of approximate roots. We give two algorithms: the first one constructs the canonical equation of a curve with a given semigroup. The second one gives the set of semigroups with a fixed Milnor number. The paper is backed by Maple and Math…
We describe the generic singularity of a Schubert variety of type A on each irreducible component of its singular locus. This singularity is given either by a cone of rank one matrices, or a quadratic cone.
Let f : X -> Y be a dominant polynomial mapping of affine varieties. For generic y in Y we have Sing(f^{-1}(y)) = f^{-1}(y) \cap Sing(X): As an application we show that symmetry defect hypersurfaces for two generic members of the irreducible algebraic family of n-dimensional smooth irreducible subvarieties in general position in C^{2n} are homeomorphic and they have homeomorphic sets of singular points. In particular symmetry defect curves for two generic curves in C^2 of the same degree have the same number of singular points.
We partially prove and partially disprove Oka's conjecture on the fundamental group/Alexander polynomial of an irreducible plane sextic. Among other results, we enumerate all irreducible sextics with simple singularities admitting dihedral coverings and find examples of Alexander equivalent Zariski pairs of irreducible sextics.
We construct a new infinite series of irreducible components of the Gieseker-Maruyama moduli scheme $\mathcal{M}(k), ~ k \geq 3$ of coherent semistable rank 2 sheaves with Chern classes $c_1=0,~ c_2=k,~ c_3=0$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$ whose general points are sheaves with singularities of mixed dimension. These sheaves are constructed by elementary transformations of stable and properly $μ$-semistable reflexive sheaves along disjoint union of collections of points and smooth irreducible curves which are rational or complete intersection curves. As a special member of this series we obtain a new compo…
We classify stably simple reducible curve singularities in complex spaces of any dimension. This extends the same classification of of irreducible curve singularities obtained by V.I.Arnold. The proof is essentially based on the method of complete transversals by J.W.Bruce et al.
In this paper we shall prove that the singular locus of a symplectic singularity has no codimension 3 irreducible components. As a corollary, a symplectic singularity is terminal if and only if its singular locus has codimension $\geq 4$. It is hoped that a symplectic singularity has much stronger properties.
We describe new irreducible components of the Gieseker-Maruyama moduli scheme $\mathcal{M}(3)$ of semistable rank 2 coherent sheaves with Chern classes $c_1=0,\ c_2=3,\ c_3=0$ on $\mathbb{P}^3$, general points of which correspond to sheaves whose singular loci contain components of dimensions both 0 and 1. These sheaves are produced by elementary transformations of stable reflexive rank 2 sheaves with $c_1=0,\ c_2=2,\ c_3=2$ or 4 along a disjoint union of a projective line and a collection of points in $\mathbb{P}^3$. The constructed families of sheaves provide first examples of irreducible co…
In [7], Donovan and Wemyss introduced the contraction algebra of flop- ping curves in 3-folds. When the flopping curve is smooth and irreducible, we prove that the contraction algebra together with its A_\infty-structure recovers various invariants associated to the underlying singularity and its small resolution, including the derived category of singularities and the genus zero Gopakuma-Vafa invariants.
We calculate the fundamental groups $π=π_1(P^2\setminus B)$ for all irreducible plane sextics $B\subset¶^2$ with simple singularities for which $π$ is known to admit a dihedral quotient $D_{10}$. All groups found are shown to be finite, two of them being of large order: 960 and 21600.
Let k be a field, and let π:\tilde{X} -> X be a proper birational morphism of irreducible k-varieties, where \tilde{X} is smooth and X has at worst quotient singularities. When the characteristic of k is zero, a theorem of Kollár in [Ko1] says that π induces an isomorphism of etale fundamental groups. We give a proof of this result which works for all characteristics. As an application, we prove that for a smooth projective irreducible surface X over an algebraically closed field k, the etale fundamental group of the Hilbert scheme of n points of X, where n > 1, is canonically isomorphic to th…
Consider the family S of irreducible plane curves of degree n with d nodes and k cusps as singularities. Let W be an irreducible component of S. We consider the natural rational map from W to the moduli space of curves of genus g=(n-1)(n-2)/2-d-k. We define the "number of moduli of W" as the dimension of the image of W with respect to this map. If W has the expected dimension equal to 3n+g-1-k, then the number of moduli of W is at most equal to the min(3g-3, 3g-3+ρ-k), dove ρis the Brill-Neother number of the linear series of degree n and dimension 2 on a smooth curve of genus g. We say that W…
We consider the question whether one can construct an embedded resolution of singularities of a singular variety $X\subset \textbf{A}^n$ from the data of the irreducible components of the spaces of jets (of $X$) centered at the singular locus of $X.$ We show that the answer is no in general and that it is yes for some birational models of rational triple surface singularities.
We prove that every irreducible component of semi-regular loci of effective line bundles in the Picard scheme of a smooth projective variety has at worst rational singularities. This generalizes Kempf's result on rational singularities of $W^0_d$ for smooth curves. We also work out an example of such loci for a ruled surface.
The aim of this paper is to show the possible Milnor numbers of deformations of semi-quasi-homogeneous isolated plane curve singularities. Main result states that if $f$ is irreducible and nondegenerate, by deforming $f$ one can attain all Milnor numbers ranging from $μ(f)$ to $μ(f)-r(p-r)$, where $r$ and $p$ are easily computed from the Newton diagram of $f$.
We classify simple flops on smooth threefolds, or equivalently, Gorenstein threefold singularities with irreducible small resolution. There are only six families of such singularities, distinguished by Koll{á}r's {\em length} invariant. The method is to apply invariant theory to Pinkham's construction of small resolutions. As a by-product, generators of the ring of invariants are given for the standard action of the Weyl group of each of the irreducible root systems.
A quasi-ordinary polynomial is a monic polynomial with coefficients in the power series ring such that its discriminant equals a monomial up to unit. In this paper we study higher derivatives of quasi-ordinary polynomials, also called higher order polars. We find factorizations of these polars. Our research in this paper goes in two directions. We generalize the results of Casas-Alvero and our previous results on higher order polars in the plane to irreducible quasi-ordinary polynomials. We also generalize the factorization of the first polar of a quasi-ordinary polynomial (not necessary irred…
Kempf proved that the theta divisor of a smooth projective curve C has rational singularities. In this paper we estimate the dimensions of the jet schemes of the theta divisor and show that all these schemes are irreducible. In particular, we recover Kempf's theorem in this way. For general projective smooth curves, our method also gives a formula for the log canonical threshold of the pair (\pic^d(C), W^r_d(C)).
Let p be a singular point of a complex hypersurface whose tangent cone is a quadric of rank at least 3. We show that the space of arcs through p is irreducible. Using a method of de Fernex, this shows that the Nash problem has a negative answer for x^2+y^2+z^2+t^5=0. Version 2: Several small corrections.
We study the singularities of the irreducible components of the Springer fiber over a nilpotent element N with N^2=0 in a Lie algebra of type A or D (the so-called two columns case). We use Frobenius splitting techniques to prove that these irreducible components are normal, Cohen-Macaulay, and have rational singularities.
Pfister and Steenbrink studied punctual Hilbert schemes for irreducible curve singularities. In particular, they investigated the structure of special punctual Hilbert schemes for certain monomial curve singularities. In this paper, we study the punctual Hilbert schemes of all degrees for the curve singularities of types $E_6$ and $E_8$. For our analysis, we introduce computational algorithms to decompose a punctual Hilbert schemes into affine cells. We also use the theory of Gröbner basis and known results about the compactified Jacobian of singular curves to prove our main theorems.
Let $X \subset \mathbb{C}^{2n}$ be an $n$-dimensional algebraic variety. We define the algebraic version of the generic symmetry defect set (Wigner caustic) of $X$. Moreover, we compute its singularities for $X_d$ being a generic curve of degree $d$ in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
Let (S,0) be a germ of complex analytic normal surface. On its minimal resolution, we consider the reduced exceptional divisor E and its irreducible components E_i. The Nash map associates to each irreducible component C_k of the space of arcs through 0 on S the unique component of E cut by the strict transform of the generic arc in C_k. Nash proved its injectivity and asked if it was bijective. As a particular case of our main theorem, we prove that this is the case if E.E_i <0 for any i.
It is a very old and interesting open problem to characterize those collections of embedded topological types of local plane curve singularities which may appear as singularities of a projective plane curve C of degree d. The goal of the present article is to give a complete (topological) classification of those cases when C is rational and it has a unique singularity which is locally irreducible (i.e. C is unicuspidal) with one Puiseux pair.
We give a simple algorithm showing that the reduction of the multiplicity of a characteristic p>0 hypersurface singularity along a valuation is possible if there is a finite linear projection which is defectless. The method begins with the algorithm of Zariski to reduce multiplicity of hypersuface singularities in characteristic 0 along a valuation. This gives a simple demonstration that the only obstruction to local uniformization in positive characteristic is from defect arising in finite projections of singularities.
We prove that there exists a>0 such that for any integer d>2 and any topological types S_1,...,S_n of plane curve singularities, satisfying $μ(S_1)+...+μ(S_n) \leq ad^2$, there exists a reduced irreducible plane curve of degree d with exactly n singular points of types S_1,...,S_n, respectively. This estimate is optimal with respect to the exponent of d. In particular, we prove that for any topological type S there exists an irreducible polynomial of degree $d \leq 14\sqrt{μ(S)}$ having a singular point of type S.
The subject is partial resolution of singularities. Given an algebraic variety X (not necessarily equidimensional) in characteristic zero (or, more generally, a pair (X,D), where D is a divisor on X), we construct a functorial desingularization of all but stable simple normal crossings (stable-snc) singularities, by smooth blowings-up that preserve such singularities. A variety has stable simple normal crossings at a point if, locally, its irreducible components are smooth and tranverse in some smooth embedding variety. We also show that our main assertion is false for more general simple norm…
We study loci of arcs on a smooth variety defined by order of contact with a fixed subscheme. Specifically, we establish a Nash-type correspondence showing that the irreducible components of these loci arise from (intersections of) exceptional divisors in a resolution of singularities. We show also that these loci account for all the valuations determined by irreducible cylinders in the arc space. Along the way, we recover in an elementary fashion-without using motivic integration-results of the third author relating singularities to arc spaces. Moreover, we extend these results to give a jet-…
For a given irreducible projective variety $X$, the closure of the set of all hyperplanes containing tangents to $X$ is the projectively dual variety $X^{\vee}$. We study the singular locus of projectively dual varieties of certain Segre-Plücker embeddings in series of papers. In this work we give a classification of the irreducible components of the singular locus of the dual Grassmannian. Basically, it admits two components: cusp type and node type which are degeneracies of a certain Hessian matrix, and the closure of the set of tangent planes having more than one critical point, respectivel…
The geometric motivic Poincaré series of a germ $(S,0)$ of complex algebraic variety takes into account the classes in the Grothendieck ring of the jets of arcs through $(S,0)$. Denef and Loeser proved that this series has a rational form. We give an explicit description of this invariant when $(S,0)$ is an irreducible germ of quasi-ordinary hypersurface singularity in terms of the Newton polyhedra of the logarithmic jacobian ideals. These ideals are determined by the characteristic monomials of a quasi-ordinary branch parametrizing $(S,0)$.
The total curvature of complex hypersurfaces in $\bC^{n+1}$ and its variation in families appear to depend not only on singularities but also on the behaviour in the neighbourhood of infinity. We find the asymptotic loss of total curvature towards infinity and we express the total curvature and the Gauss-Bonnet defect in terms of singularities and tangencies at infinity.
We prove that if two germs of irreducible complex analytic curves at $0\in\mathbb{C}^2$ have different sequence of characteristic exponents, then there exists $0<α<1$ such that those germs are not $α$-Hölder homeomorphic. For germs of complex analytic plane curves with several irreducible components we prove that if any two of them are $α$-Hölder homeomorphic, for all $0<α<1$, then there is a correspondence between their branches preserving sequence of characteristic exponents and intersection multiplicity of pair of branches. In particular, we recovery the sequence of characteristic exponents…
Let $(\bf {V,0})\subset (\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ be a germ of a complex hypersurface and let $f: (\mathbb{C}^n,0)\to(\mathbb{C}^n,0)$ be a germ of a finite holomorphic mapping. If germs $(\bf {V,0})$ and ${\bf W}:=(F^{-1}(\bf{ V})),0)$ are irreducible and with isolated singularities, then $$μ(F^{-1}(\bf{ V}))\ge μ(\bf {V}),$$ where $μ$ denotes the Milnor number.
In this paper we partly extend the Beauville-Bogomolov decomposition theorem to the singular setting. We show that any complex projective variety of dimension at most five with canonical singularities and numerically trivial canonical class admits a finite cover, étale in codimension one, that decomposes as a product of an Abelian variety, and singular analogues of irreducible Calabi-Yau and irreducible holomorphic symplectic varieties.
Let $f(Y)\in K[[X_1,\dots,X_d]][Y]$ be a quasi-ordinary Weierstrass polynomial with coefficients in the ring of formal power series over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. In this paper we study the discriminant $D_f$ of $f(Y)-V$, where $V$ is a new variable. We show that the Newton polytope of $D_f$ depends only on contacts between the roots of $f(Y)$. Then we prove that $f(Y)$ is irreducible if and only if the Newton polytope of $D_f$ satisfies some arithmetic conditions. Finally we generalize these results to quasi-ordinary power series.
