We provide an unified approach of results of L. Dor on the complementation of the range, and of D. Alspach on the nearness from isometries, of small into isomorphisms of L1. We introduce the notion of small subspace of L1 and show lifting theorems for operators between quotients of L1 by small subspaces. We construct a subspace of L1 which shows that extension of isometries from subspaces of L1 to the whole space are no longer true for isomorphisms, and that nearly isometric isomorphisms from subspaces of L1 into L1 need not be near from any isometry.
A Banach space $X$ with a Schauder basis is defined to have the restricted quotient hereditarily indecomposable (QHI) property if $X/Y$ is hereditarily indecomposable (HI) for any infinite codimensional subspace $Y$ with a successive finite-dimensional decomposition on the basis of $X$. A reflexive space with the restricted QHI property is in particular HI, has HI dual, and is saturated with subspaces which are HI and have HI dual. The following dichotomy theorem is proved: any infinite dimensional Banach space contains a quotient of subspace which either has an unconditional basis, or has the…
In article is constructed a wide couple of pairwice non-isomorphic separable superreflexive Banach spaces E that are subspace homogeneous. Their conjugates are quotient homogeneous. None of this couple neither isomorphic to its Cartesian square nor has the approximation property. At the same time, any such E is isomorphic to E+ E+ W for some Banach space W and, hence, solves the Schroeder - Bernstein problem.
We prove that the dual or any quotient of a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property has the unconditional tree property. Then we prove that a separable reflexive Banach space with the unconditional tree property embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis. This solves several long standing open problems. In particular, it yields that a quotient of a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional finite dimensional decomposition embeds into a reflexive Banach space with an unconditional basis.
Let $X$ be a complex Banach space and let $T$ be a bounded linear operator on $X$. For any closed $T$-invariant subspace $F$ of $X$, $T$ induces operators $T_{|F}:F \longrightarrow F$ and $T/F:X/F\longrightarrow X/F$. In this note, we give a simple proof of the fact that the essential spectra of $T_{|F}$ and $T/F$ are always contained in the polynomial hull of the essential spectrum of $T$.
It was shown by G. Pisier that any finite-dimensional normed space admits an $α$-regular $M$-position, guaranteeing not only regular entropy estimates but moreover regular estimates on the diameters of minimal sections of its unit-ball and its dual. We revisit Pisier's argument and show the existence of a \emph{different} position, which guarantees the same estimates for \emph{randomly sampled} sections \emph{with high-probability}. As an application, we obtain a \emph{random} version of V. Milman's Quotient-of-Subspace Theorem, asserting that in the above position, \emph{typical} quotients of…
We show that the space $\text{Lip}_0(\mathbb R^n)$ is the dual space of $L^{1}({\mathbb R}^{n}; {\mathbb R}^{n})/N$ where $N$ is the subspace of $L^{1}({\mathbb R}^{n}; {\mathbb R}^{n})$ consisting of vector fields whose divergence vanishes. We prove that although the quotient space $L^{1}({\mathbb R}^{n}; {\mathbb R}^{n})/N$ is weakly sequentially complete, the subspace $N$ is not nicely placed - in other words, its unit ball is not closed for the topology $τ_m$ of local convergence in measure. We prove that if $Ω$ is a bounded open star-shaped subset of $\mathbb {R}^n$ and $X$ is a closed su…
The main result: the dual of separable Banach space $X$ contains a total subspace which is not norming over any infinite dimensional subspace of $X$ if and only if $X$ has a nonquasireflexive quotient space with the strictly singular quotient mapping.
We consider a general concept of Daugavet property with respect to a norming subspace. This concept covers both the usual Daugavet property and its weak$^*$ analogue. We introduce and study analogues for narrow operators and rich subspaces in this general setting and apply the results to show that a quotient of $L_1[0,1]$ over an $\ell_1$-subspace can fail the Daugavet property. The latter answers a question posed to us by A. Pelczynski in the negative.
We prove that for every closed locally convex subspace $E$ of $L_0$ and for any continuous linear operator $T$ from $L_0$ to $L_0/E$ there is a continuous linear operator $S$ from $L_0$ to $L_0$ such that $T = QS$ where $Q$ is the quotient map from $L_0$ to $L_0/E$.
In this paper, we show that if the direct sum of two operators is subspace-hypercyclic (satisfies subspace hypercyclic criterion), then both operators are subspace-hypercyclic (satisfy subspace hypercyclic criterion). Moreover, if an operator $T$ satisfies subspace-hypercyclic criterion, then so $T\oplus T$ does. Also, we obtain that under certain conditions, if $T\oplus T$ is hypercyclic then $T$ satisfies subspace-hypercyclic criterion and, the subspace-hypercyclic operators satisfy subspace-hypercyclic criterion which gives the "subspace-hypercyclic" analogue of Theorem 2.3. (in Hereditaril…
A bounded linear operator $T$ on a Banach space $X$ is called subspace-hypercyclic if there is a subspace $M \subsetneq X$ and a vector $x \in X$ such that $orb{(x,T)} \cap M$ is dense in $M$. We show that every Banach space supports subspace-hypercyclic operators and provide a new criteira for subspace-hypercyclic operators, generalizing a previous result from Le.
We consider subspaces of Morrey spaces defined in terms of various vanishing properties of functions. Such subspaces were recently used to describe the closure of $C_0^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$ in Morrey norm. We show that these subspaces are invariant with respect to some classical operators of harmonic analysis, such as the Hardy-Littlewood maximal operator, singular type operators and Hardy operators. We also show that the vanishing properties defining those subspaces are preserved under the action of Riesz potential operators and fractional maximal operators.
Let $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ denote the Hardy space over the polydisc $\mathbb{D}^n$, $n \geq 2$. A closed subspace $\mathcal{Q} \subseteq H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ is called Beurling quotient module if there exists an inner function $θ\in H^\infty(\mathbb{D}^n)$ such that $\mathcal{Q} = H^2(\mathbb{D}^n) /θH^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$. We present a complete characterization of Beurling quotient modules of $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$: Let $\mathcal{Q} \subseteq H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ be a closed subspace, and let $C_{z_i} = P_{\mathcal{Q}} M_{z_i}|_{\mathcal{Q}}$, $i=1, \ldots, n$. Then $\mathcal{Q}$ is a Beurling quotient mod…
In this paper, we define and study subspace-diskcyclic operators. We show that subspace-diskcyclicity does not imply to diskcyclicity. We establish a subspace-diskcyclic criterion and use it to find a subspace-diskcyclic operator that is not subspace-hypercyclic for any subspaces. Also, we show that the inverse of invertible subspace-diskcyclic operators do not need to be subspace-diskcyclic for any subspaces. Finally, we prove that every finite-dimensional separable Hilbert space over the complex field supports a subspace-diskcyclic operator.
In this paper we study subspaces which are invariant under squares and cubes (separately as well as jointly) of unicellular backward weighted shift operators on a separable Hilbert space. The finite-dimensional subspaces are characterized for all weights and the infinite-dimensional subspaces are characterized for two classes of weights.
The spaces ${\mathcal S}'/{\mathcal P}$ equipped with the quotient topology and ${\mathcal S}'_\infty$ equipped with the weak-* topology are known to be homeomorphic, where ${\mathcal P}$ denotes the set of all polynomials. The proof is a combination of the fact in the textbook by Treves and the well-known bipolar theorem. In this paper by extending slightly the idea employed in \cite{NNS15}, we give an alternative proof of this fact and then we extend this proposition so that we can include some related function spaces.
We relax assumptions for a dissipative operator in Krein space to possess a maximal non-negative invariant subspace. Our main result is a generalization of a well-known Pontrjagin-Krein-Langer-Azizov theorem. Then we investigate the semigroup properties of the restriction of the operator onto the invariant subspace.
We prove the existence of a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace for several sets of polynomially compact operators. The main results of the paper are: (i) a non-trivial norm closed algebra $\mathcal A\subseteq \mathcal B(\mathscr X)$ which consists of polynomially compact quasinilpotent operators has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace; (ii) if there exists a non-zero compact operator in the norm closure of the algebra generated by an operator band $\mathcal S$, then $\mathcal S$ has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace.
We use a theorem by Gonzalez, Leon-Saavedra and Montes-Rodriguez to construct a class of coanalytic Toeplitz operators which have an infinite-dimensional closed subspace, where any non-zero vector is hypercyclic.
It is proved that every operator from a weak$^*$-closed subspace of $\ell_1$ into a space $C(K)$ of continuous functions on a compact Hausdorff space $K$ can be extended to an operator from $\ell_1$ to $C(K)$.
There has been a long-standing conjecture in Banach algebra that every amenable operator is similar to a normal operator. In this paper, we study the structure of amenable operators on Hilbert spaces. At first, we show that the conjecture is equivalent to every non-scalar amenable operator has a non-trivial hyperinvariant subspace and equivalent to every amenable operator is similar to a reducible operator and has a non-trivial invariant subspace; and then, we give two decompositions for amenable operators, which supporting the conjecture.
We construct a complete locally convex topological vector space $X$ of countable algebraic dimension and a continuous linear operator $T:X\to X$ such that $T$ has no non-trivial closed invariant subspaces.
We describe the spectrum of weighted $d$-isomorphisms of Banach lattices restricted on closed subspaces that are "rich" enough to preserve some "memory" of the order structure of the original lattice. The examples include (but are not limited to) weighted isometries of Hardy spaces on the polydisk and unit ball in $\mathds{C}^n$.
It is proved that a commutative algebra $A$ of operators in a reflexive real Banach space has an invariant subspace if each operator $T\in A$ satisfies the condition $$\|1- \varepsilon T^2\|_e \le 1 + o(\varepsilon) \text{ when } \varepsilon\searrow 0,$$ where $\|\cdot\|_e$ is the essential norm. This implies the existence of an invariant subspace for every commutative family of essentially selfadjoint operators in a real Hilbert space.
We describe necessary and sufficient conditions for a $J$-dissipative operator in a Krein space to have maximal semidefinite invariant subspaces. The semigroup properties of the restrictions of an operator to these subspaces are studied. Applications are given to the case when an operator admits matrix representation with respect to the canonical decomposition of the space. The main conditions are given in the terms of the interpolation theory of Banach spaces.
This paper deals with study of Birkhoff-James orthogonality of a linear operator to a subspace of operators defined between arbitrary Banach spaces. In case the domain space is reflexive and the subspace is finite dimensional we obtain a complete characterization. For arbitrary Banach spaces, we obtain the same under some additional conditions. For arbitrary Hilbert space $ \mathbb{H},$ we also study orthogonality to subspace of the space of linear operators $L(\mathbb{H}), $ both with respect to operator norm as well as numerical radius norm.
We obtaine the full characterization of proper closed invariant subspaces of a generalized backward shift operator (Pommiez operator) in the Frechet space of all holomorphic functions on a simply connected domain $Ω$ of the complex plane, containing the origin. In the case when the function, which defines this operator, is not has zeros in $Ω$ all such subspaces are finite-dimensional. If additionally $Ω$ coincides with the complex plane, then the considered operator is unicellular. If this function has zeros in $Ω$, then the family of mentioned invariant subspaces splits into two classes: the…
In this paper, a sufficient condition for the existence of hyperinvariant subspace of compact perturbations of multiplication operators on some Banach spaces is presented. An interpretation of this result for compact perturbations of normal and diagonal operators on Hilbert space is also discussed. An improvement of a result of [FX12] for compact perturbations of diagonal operators is also obtained.
In this paper we present some spectral property for quotient bounded operators and locally bounded operators on locally convex spaces. We introduce the spectral radius of a quotient bounded operator and we show that the Gelfand formula for spectral radius and Newmann series have the same properties like in Banach spaces. Moreover, the geometrical radius of the spectrum is equal with the spectral radius. Using definitions of V.Troitsky we prove that the spectral set of a quotient bounded operator is compact set.
This paper introduces the concept of atomic subspaces with respect to a bounded linear operator. Atomic subspaces generalize fusion frames and this generalization leads to the notion of $K$-fusion frames. Characterizations of $K$-fusion frames are discussed. Various properties of $K$-fusion frames, for example, direct sums, intersection, are studied.
Let $T$ be an absolutely continuous polynomially bounded operator, and let $θ$ be a singular inner function. It is shown that if $θ(T)$ is invertible and some additional conditions are fulfilled, then $T$ has nontrivial hyperinvariant subspaces.
A space $X$ is said to be hereditarily indecomposable if no two (infinite dimensional) subspaces of $X$ are in a direct sum. In this paper, we show that if $X$ is a complex hereditarily indecomposable Banach space, then every operator from a subspace $Y$ of $X$ to $X$ is of the form $λI + S$, where $I$ is the inclusion map and $S$ is strictly singular.
Johnson and Zippin recently showed that if $X$ is a weak^*-closed subspace of $\ell_1$ and T:X-> C(K) is any bounded operator then T can extended to a bounded operator $\tilde T:\ell_1\to C(K).$ We give a converse result: if X is a subspace of $\ell_1$ so that $\ell_1/X$ has a (UFDD) and every operator T:X -> C(K) can be extended to $\ell_1$ then there is an automorphism $τ$ of $\ell_1$ so that $τ(X)$ is weak^*-closed. This result is proved by studying subspaces of c_0 and several different characterizations of such subspaces are given.
We show that a bounded quasinilpotent operator $T$ acting on an infinite dimensional Banach space has an invariant subspace if and only if there exists a rank one operator $F$ and a scalar $α\in\mathbb{C}$, $α\neq 0$, $α\neq 1$, such that $T+F$ and $T+αF$ are also quasinilpotent. We also prove that for any fixed rank-one operator $F$, almost all perturbations $T+αF$ have invariant subspaces of infinite dimension and codimension.
Our aim in this paper is to obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for weighted shift operators on the Hilbert spaces $\ell^{2}(\mathbb Z)$ and $\ell^{2}(\mathbb N)$ to be subspace-transitive, consequently, we show that the Herrero question (D. A. Herrero. Limits of hypercyclic and supercyclic operators, J. Funct. Anal., 99 (1991)179-190) holds true even on a subspace of a Hilbert space, i.e. there exists an operator $T$ such that both $T$ and $T^*$ are subspace-hypercyclic operators for some subspaces. We display the conditions on the direct sum of two invertable bilateral forward weighte…
In this article, we characterize nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the vector-valued Hardy space which is a vectorial generalization of a result of Chalendar-Gallardo-Partington (C-G-P). Using this characterization of nearly invariant subspace under the backward shift we completely describe the almost invariant subspaces for the shift and its adjoint acting on the vector valued Hardy space.
We extend and study the notion of bounded point evaluation introduced by Williams for a cyclic operator to the class of operators with the wandering subspace property. We characterize the set $bpe(T)$ of all bounded point evaluations for an operator $T$ with the wandering subspace property in terms of the invertibility of certain projections. This result generalizes the earlier established characterization of $bpe(T)$ for a finitely cyclic operator $T$. Further, if $T$ is a left-invertible operator with the wandering subspace property, then we determine the $bpe(T)$ and the set $abpe(T)$ of al…
For an operator $A$ on a complex Banach space $X$ and a closed subspace $M\subseteq X$, the local commutant of $A$ at $M$ is the set $C(A;M)$ of all operators $T$ on $X$ such that $TAx=ATx$ for every $x\in M$. It is clear that $ C(A;M)$ is a closed linear space of operators, however it is not an algebra, in general. For a given $A$, we show that $C(A;M)$ is an algebra if and only if the largest subspace $M_A$ such that $C(A;M)=C(A;M_A)$ is invariant for every operator in $C(A;M)$. We say that these are ultrainvariant subspaces of $A$. For several types of operators we prove that there exist no…
In this paper, we prove the Mohebi-Radjabalipour Conjecture under a little additional condition, and obtain a new invariant subspace theorem for subdecomposable operators. Our main results contain known results in this topic as special cases. Moreover, the condition in our theorem is really much weaker, much simpler and much more nature than that in the known results.
In this paper we first study the structure of the scalar and vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. We then subsequently produce some fruitful applications of our new results. We produce a decomposition theorem for the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. More specifically, we show every vector-valued nearly invariant subspace with a finite defect can be written as the isometric image of a backwards shift invariant subspace. We also show that there is a link between the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces and the scalar-valued nearly invar…
In this paper, we answer a question posed in the introduction of \cite{sub hyp} positively, i.e, we show that if $T$ is $\mathcal M$-hypercyclic operator with $\mathcal M$-hypercyclic vector $x$ in a Hilbert space $\mathcal H$, then $P(Orb(T,x))$ is dense in the subspace $\mathcal M$ where $P$ is the orthogonal projection onto $\mathcal M$. Furthermore, we give some relations between ${\mathcal M}^{\perp}$-hypercyclicity and the orthogonal projection onto ${\mathcal M}^{\perp}$. We also give sufficient conditions for a bilateral weighted shift operators on a Hilbert space $\ell^{2}(\mathbb Z)$…
Given a Banach space $E$, we ask which closed subspaces may be realised as the kernel of a bounded operator $E \rightarrow E$. We prove some positive results which imply in particular that when $E$ is separable every closed subspace is a kernel. Moreover, we show that there exists a Banach space $E$ which contains a closed subspace that cannot be realized as the kernel of any bounded operator on $E$. This implies that the Banach algebra $\mathcal{B}(E)$ of bounded operators on $E$ fails to be weak*-topologically left Noetherian. The Banach space $E$ that we use is the dual of Wark's non-separa…
The theorem on the existence of maximal nonnegative invariant subspaces for a special class of dissipative operators in Hilbert space with indefinite inner product is proved in the paper. It is shown in addition that the spectra of the restrictions of these operators on the corresponding invariant subspaces lie in the closed upper half-plane. The obtained theorem is a generalization of well-known results of L.S.Pontrjagin, H.K.Langer, M.G.Krein and T.Ja.Azizov devoted to this subject.
Let $ Ω\subset \mathbb{C}^m $ be an open, connected and bounded set and $\mathcal{A}(Ω)$ be a function algebra of holomorphic functions on $Ω$. Suppose that $\mathcal{M}_q$ is the quotient Hilbert module obtained from a submodule of functions in a Hilbert module $\mathcal{M}$ vanishing to order $k$ along a smooth irreducible complex analytic set $\mathcal{Z}\subsetΩ$ of codimension at least $2$. In this article, we prove that the compression of the multiplication operators onto $\mathcal{M}_q$ is homogeneous with respect to a suitable subgroup of the automorphism group Aut$(Ω)$ of $Ω$ dependin…
We prove that every lattice homomorphism acting on a Banach space $\mathcal{X}$ with the lattice structure given by an unconditional basis has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. In fact, it has a non-trivial closed invariant ideal, which is no longer true for every positive operator on such a space. Motivated by these later examples, we characterize tridiagonal positive operators without non-trivial closed invariant ideals on $\mathcal{X}$ extending to this context a result of Grivaux on the existence of non-trivial closed invariant subspaces for tridiagonal operators.
It is well known that the structure of nontrival invariant subspaces for the shift operator on the Bergman space is extremely complicated and very little is known about their specific structures, and that a complete description of the structure seems unlikely. In this paper, we find that any invariant subspace $M(\neq \{0\})$ for the shift operator $M_z$ on the Bergman space $A^{^p}_α(\D)~(1\leq p< \infty,~~-1<α<\infty)$ contains a nonempty subset that lies in $A^{^p}_α(\D)\backslash H^{^p}(\D)$. To a certain extent, this result describes the specific structure of every nonzero invariant subsp…
