We obtaine the full characterization of proper closed invariant subspaces of a generalized backward shift operator (Pommiez operator) in the Frechet space of all holomorphic functions on a simply connected domain $Ω$ of the complex plane, containing the origin. In the case when the function, which defines this operator, is not has zeros in $Ω$ all such subspaces are finite-dimensional. If additionally $Ω$ coincides with the complex plane, then the considered operator is unicellular. If this function has zeros in $Ω$, then the family of mentioned invariant subspaces splits into two classes: the first consists of finite-dimensional subspaces, and the second of infinite-dimensional ones.
In this note, we describe the backward shift invariant subspaces for a large class of reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces. This class includes in particular de Branges-Rovnyak spaces (the non-extreme case) and the range space of co-analytic Toeplitz operators.
In this article, we characterize nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the vector-valued Hardy space which is a vectorial generalization of a result of Chalendar-Gallardo-Partington (C-G-P). Using this characterization of nearly invariant subspace under the backward shift we completely describe the almost invariant subspaces for the shift and its adjoint acting on the vector valued Hardy space.
It is well known that the kernel of a Toeplitz operator is nearly invariant under the backward shift $S^*$. This paper shows that kernels of finite-rank perturbations of Toeplitz operators are nearly $S^*$-invariant with finite defect. This enables us to apply a recent theorem by Chalendar--Gallardo--Partington to represent the kernel in terms of backward shift-invariant subspaces, which we identify in several important cases.
We study the structure of the backward shift invariant and nearly invariant subspaces in weighted Fock-type spaces $\mathcal{F}_W^p$, whose weight $W$ is not necessarily radial. We show that in the spaces $\mathcal{F}_W^p$ which contain the polynomials as a dense subspace (in particular, in the radial case) all nontrivial backward shift invariant subspaces are of the form $\mathcal{P}_n$, i.e., finite dimensional subspaces consisting of polynomials of degree at most $n$. In general, the structure of the nearly invariant subspaces is more complicated. In the case of spaces of slow growth (up to…
In this paper we study subspaces which are invariant under squares and cubes (separately as well as jointly) of unicellular backward weighted shift operators on a separable Hilbert space. The finite-dimensional subspaces are characterized for all weights and the infinite-dimensional subspaces are characterized for two classes of weights.
Recently, Liang and Partington \cite{YP} show that kernels of finite-rank perturbations of Toeplitz operators are nearly invariant with finite defect under the backward shift operator acting on the scalar-valued Hardy space. In this article we provide a vectorial generalization of a result of Liang and Partington. As an immediate application we identify the kernel of perturbed Toeplitz operator in terms of backward shift-invariant subspaces in various important cases by applying the recent theorem (\cite{CDP, OR}) in connection with nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward …
In this article, we briefly describe nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces with finite defect for a shift operator $T$ having finite multiplicity acting on a separable Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ as a generalization of nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces introduced by Liang and Partington in \cite{YP}. In other words we characterize nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces with finite defect in terms of backward shift invariant subspaces in vector-valued Hardy spaces by using Theorem 3.5 in \cite{CDP}. Furthermore, we also provide a concrete representation of the nearly $T_B^{-1}$ invariant subspaces…
In 1991, J. Thomson obtained a celebrated decomposition theorem for $P^t(μ),$ the closed subspace of $L^t(μ)$ spanned by the analytic polynomials, when $1 \le t < ı.$ In 2008, J. Brennan \cite{b08} generalized Thomson's theorem to $R^t(K, μ),$ the closed subspace of $L^t(μ)$ spanned by the rational functions with poles off a compact subset $K$ containing the support of $μ,$ when the diameters of the components of $\mathbb C\setminus K$ are bounded below. We extend the above decomposition theorems for $R^t(K, μ)$ when the boundary of $K$ is not too wild.
We extend the Balian-Low theorem to Gabor subspaces of $L^2(\mathbb R)$ by involving the concept of additional time-frequency shift invariance. We prove that if a Gabor system on a lattice of rational density is a Riesz sequence generating a subspace which is invariant under an additional time-frequency shift, then its generator cannot decay fast simultaneously in time and frequency.
A backward biorthogonalization approach is proposed, which modifies biorthogonal functions so as to generate orthogonal projections onto a reduced subspace. The technique is relevant to problems amenable to be represented by a general linear model. In particular, problems of data compression, noise reduction and sparse representations may be tackled by the proposed approach.
A complete characterization of nearly-invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the Hardy space is provided in the spirit of Hitt and Sarason's theorem. As a corollary we describe the almost-invariant subspaces for the shift and its adjoint.
For $b\in H^\infty_1$, the closed unit ball of $H^\infty$, the de Branges-Rovnyak spaces $\mathcal{H}(b)$ is a Hilbert space contractively contained in the Hardy space $H^2$ that is invariant by the backward shift operator $S^*$. We consider the reducing subspaces of the operator $S^{*2}|_{\mathcal{H}(b)}$. When $b$ is an inner function, $S^{*2}|_{\mathcal{H}(b)}$ is a truncated Toepltiz operator and its reducibility was characterized by Douglas and Foias using model theory. We use another approach to extend their result to the case where $b$ is extreme. We prove that if $b$ is extreme but not…
For a shift operator $T$ with finite multiplicity acting on a separable infinite dimensional Hilbert space we represent its nearly $T^{-1}$ invariant subspaces in terms of invariant subspaces under the backward shift. Going further, given any finite Blaschke product $B$, we give a description of the nearly $T_{B}^{-1}$ invariant subspaces for the operator $T_B$ of multiplication by $B$ in a scale of Dirichlet-type spaces.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the similarity between two perturbations of the (backward) shift by rank one operators, under certain assumptions on the perturbations. The proof of similarity is based on an explicit construction of intertwiners between the perturbations. These intertwiners, in turn, are parametrized by the elements of a certain algebra, with the group of "circle invertible" elements of this algebra giving rise to invertible intertwiners.
It is known that (i) a subspace ${\mathcal N}$ of the Hardy space $H^2$ which is invariant under the backward shift operator can be represented as the range of the observability operator of a conservative discrete-time linear system, (ii) the transfer-function of this conservative linear system in turn is the inner Beurling-Lax representer for the forward-shift invariant subspace ${\mathcal M} : = {\mathcal N}^\perp$, and (iii) this transfer function also serves as the Sz.-Nagy-Foias characteristic function of the pure contraction operator $T$ given by $T = P_{\mathcal N} M_z |_{\mathcal N}$. …
In this paper we first study the structure of the scalar and vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. We then subsequently produce some fruitful applications of our new results. We produce a decomposition theorem for the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. More specifically, we show every vector-valued nearly invariant subspace with a finite defect can be written as the isometric image of a backwards shift invariant subspace. We also show that there is a link between the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces and the scalar-valued nearly invar…
In this paper we consider compressions of $k^{th}$--order slant Toeplitz operators to the backward shift invariant subspaces of the classical Hardy space $H^2$. In particular, we characterize these operators using compressed shifts and finite rank operators of special kind.
We use shift-invariant subspaces of the Hardy space on the bidisk to provide an elementary proof of the Agler Decomposition Theorem. We observe that these shift-invariant subspaces are specific cases of Hilbert spaces that can be defined from Agler decompositions and analyze the properties of such Hilbert spaces. We then restrict attention to rational inner functions and show that the shift-invariant subspaces provide easy proofs of several known results about decompositions of rational inner functions. We use our analysis to obtain a result about stable polynomials on the polydisk.
We consider Banach spaces E of functions holomorphic on the open unit disc D such that the unilateral shift S and the backward shift T are bounded on E. Assuming that the spectra of S and T are equal to the closed unit disc we discuss the existence of closed z-invariant of N of E having the "division property", which means that the function f $λ$ : z $\rightarrow$ f (z)/ z--$λ$ belongs to N for every $λ$ $\in$ D and for every f $\in$ N such that f ($λ$) = 0. This question is related to the existence of nontrivial bi-invariant subspaces of Banach spaces of hyperfunctions on the unit circle T.
The main themes of this survey are as follows: (a) the canonical (Riesz--Nevanlinna) factorization in various classes of analytic functions on the disk that are smooth up to its boundary, and (b) model subspaces (i.e., invariant subspaces of the backward shift) in the Hardy spaces $H^p$ and in BMOA. It is the interrelationship and a peculiar cross-fertilization between the two topics that we wish to highlight.
We introduce two kinds of quasi-inner functions. Since every rationally invariant subspace for a shift operator $S_K$ on a vector-valued Hardy space $H^{2}(Ω,K)$ is generated by a quasi-inner function, we also provide relationships of quasi-inner functions by comparing rationally invariant subspaces generated by them. Furthermore, we discuss fundamental properties of quasi-inner functions, and quasi-inner divisors.
We introduce the notion of rationality for hyperholomorphic functions (functions in the kernel of the Cauchy-Fueter operator). Following the case of one complex variable, we give three equivalent definitions: the first in terms of Cauchy-Kovalevskaya quotients of polynomials, the second in terms of realizations and the third in terms of backward-shift invariance. Also introduced and studied are the counterparts of the Arveson space and Blaschke factors.
Truncated Toeplitz operators are compressions of multiplication operators on $L^2$ to model spaces (that is, subspaces of $H^2$ which are invariant with respect to the backward shift). For this class of operators we prove certain Szegö type theorems concerning the asymptotics of their compressions to an increasing chain of finite dimensional model spaces.
We study the frame properties of the Gabor systems $$\mathfrak{G}(g;α,β):=\{e^{2πi βm x}g(x-αn)\}_{m,n\in\mathbb{Z}}.$$ In particular, we prove that for Herglotz windows $g$ such systems always form a frame for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ if $α,β>0$, $αβ\leq1$. For general rational windows $g\in L^2(\mathbb{R})$ we prove that $\mathfrak{G}(g;α,β)$ is a frame for $L^2(\mathbb{R})$ if $0<α,β$, $αβ<1$, $αβ\not\in\mathbb{Q}$ and $\hat{g}(ξ)\neq0$, $ξ>0$, thus confirming Daubechies conjecture for this class of functions. We also discuss some related questions, in particular sampling in shift-invariant subspa…
We consider three problems connected with coinvariant subspaces of the backward shift operator in Hardy spaces $H^p$: 1) properties of truncated Toeplitz operators; 2) Carleson-type embedding theorems for the coinvariant subspaces; 3) factorizations of pseudocontinuable functions from $H^1$. These problems turn out to be closely connected and even, in a sense, equivalent. The new approach based on the factorizations allows us to answer a number of challenging questions about truncated Toeplitz operators posed by Donald Sarason.
We prove various Beurling-Lax type theorems, when the classical backward-shift operator is replaced by a general resolvent operator associated with a rational function. We also study connections to the Cuntz relations. An important tool is a new representation result for analytic functions, in terms of composition and multiplication operators associated with a given rational function. Applications to the theory of de Branges-Rovnyak spaces, also in the indefinite metric setting, are given.
