Recently, Liang and Partington \cite{YP} show that kernels of finite-rank perturbations of Toeplitz operators are nearly invariant with finite defect under the backward shift operator acting on the scalar-valued Hardy space. In this article we provide a vectorial generalization of a result of Liang and Partington. As an immediate application we identify the kernel of perturbed Toeplitz operator in terms of backward shift-invariant subspaces in various important cases by applying the recent theorem (\cite{CDP, OR}) in connection with nearly invariant subspaces of finite defect for the backward shift operator acting on the vector-valued Hardy space.
The notion of slant H-Toeplitz operator $V_ϕ$ on the Hardy space $H^2$ is introduced and its characterizations are obtained. We have shown that an operator on the space $H^2$ is slant H-Toeplitz if and only if its matrix is a slant H-Toeplitz matrix. In addition the conditions under which slant Toeplitz and slant Hankel operators become slant H-Toeplitz operators are also obtained.
In this paper, we investigate the conditions under which the Toeplitz Composition operator on the Hardy space $\mathcal{H}^2$ becomes complex symmetric with respect to a certain conjugation. We also study various normality conditions for the Toeplitz Composition operator on $\mathcal{H}^2$.
Compared with harmonic Bergman spaces, this paper introduces a new function space which is called the pluriharmonic Hardy space $h^{2}(\mathbb{T}^{2})$. We character (semi-) commuting Toeplitz operators on $h^{2}(\mathbb{T}^{2})$ with bounded pluriharmonic symbols. Interestingly, these results are quite different from the corresponding properties of Toeplitz operators on Hardy spaces, Bergman spaces and harmonic Bergman spaces. Our method for Toeplitz operators on $h^{2}(\mathbb{T}^{2})$ gives new insight into the study of commuting Toeplitz operators on harmonic Bergman spaces.
The paper gives the background for Toeplitz $T_a$ and Hankel $H_a$ operators acting between distinct Hardy type spaces over the unit circle $\mathbb{T}$. We characterize possible symbols of such operators and prove general versions of Brown-Halmos and Nehari theorems. The lower bound for measure of noncomactness of Toeplitz operator is also found. Our approach allows Hardy spaces associated with arbitrary rearrangement invariant spaces, but part of the results is new even for the classical case of $H^p$ spaces.
In this article, we introduce a new class of conjugations in the scalar valued Hardy space $H^2_{\mathbb{C}}(\mathbb{D})$ and provide a characterization of a complex symmetric Toeplitz operator $T_ϕ$ with respect to these newly introduced conjugations in various cases. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of a complex symmetric block Toeplitz operator $T_Φ$ on the vector valued Hardy space $\hdct$ with respect to certain conjugations introduced in \cite{CamaGP,KangKoLee,LeeKo2019}.
In this paper we study the kernels of Toeplitz operators on both the scalar and the vector-valued Hardy space for $ 1 < p < \infty $. We show existence of a minimal kernel of any element of the vector-valued Hardy space and we determine a symbol for the corresponding Toeplitz operator. In the scalar case we give an explicit description of a maximal function for a given Toeplitz kernel. In the vectorial case we show not all Toeplitz kernels have a maximal function and in the case of $p=2$ we find the exact conditions for when a Toeplitz kernel has a maximal function. For both the scalar and vec…
While the symbol map for the collection of bounded Toeplitz operators is well studied, there has been little work on a symbol map for densely defined Toeplitz operators. In this work a family of candidate symbols, the Sarason Sub-Symbols, is introduced as a means of reproducing the symbol of a densely defined Toeplitz operator. This leads to a partial answer to a question posed by Donald Sarason in 2008. In the bounded case the Toeplitzness of an operator can be classified in terms of its Sarason Sub-Symbols. This justifies the investigation into the application of the Sarason Sub-Symbols on d…
Let $Γ$ be a rectifiable Jordan curve, let $X$ and $Y$ be two reflexive Banach function spaces over $Γ$ such that the Cauchy singular integral operator $S$ is bounded on each of them, and let $M(X,Y)$ denote the space of pointwise multipliers from $X$ to $Y$. Consider the Riesz projection $P=(I+S)/2$, the corresponding Hardy type subspaces $PX$ and $PY$, and the Toeplitz operator $T(a):PX\to PY$ defined by $T(a)f=P(af)$ for a symbol $a\in M(X,Y)$. We show that if $X\hookrightarrow Y$ and $a\in M(X,Y)\setminus\{0\}$, then $T(a)\in\mathcal{L}(PX,PY)$ has a trivial kernel in $PX$ or a dense image…
A truncated Toeplitz operator is the compression of a classical Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space to a model space. A truncated Hankel operator is the compression of a Hankel operator on the Hardy space to the orthogonal complement of a model space. We study the product of a truncated Hankel operator and a truncated Toeplitz operator, and characterize when such a product is zero or compact.
The symmetrized bidisc has been a rich field of holomorphic function theory and operator theory. A certain well-known reproducing kernel Hilbert space of holomorphic functions on the symmetrized bidisc resembles the Hardy space of the unit disc in several aspects. This space is known as the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc. We introduce the study of those operators on the Hardy space of the symmetrized bidisc that are analogous to Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit disc. More explicitly, we first study multiplication operators on a bigger space (an $L^2$-space) and then stu…
The Invariant Subspace Problem (ISP) for Hilbert spaces asks if every bounded linear operator has a non-trivial closed invariant subspace. Due to the existence of universal operators (in the sense of Rota), the ISP may be solved by describing the invariant subspaces of these operators alone. We characterize all anaytic Toeplitz operators $T_ϕ$ on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D}^n)$ over the polydisk $\mathbb{D}^n$ for $n>1$ whose adjoints satisfy the Caradus criterion for universality, that is, when $T_ϕ^*$ is surjective and has infinite dimensional kernel. In particular if $ϕ$ in a non-consta…
This paper considers model spaces in an $H_p$ setting. The existence of unbounded functions and the characterisation of maximal functions in a model space are studied, and decomposition results for Toeplitz kernels, in terms of model spaces, are established.
We study a Toeplitz type operator $Q_μ$ between the holomorphic Hardy spaces $H^p$ and $H^q$ of the unit ball. Here the generating symbol $μ$ is assumed to a positive Borel measure. This kind of operator is related to many classical mappings acting on Hardy spaces, such as composition operators, the Volterra type integration operators and Carleson embeddings. We completely characterize the boundedness and compactness of $Q_μ:H^p\to H^q$ for the full range $1<p,q<\infty$; and also describe the membership in the Schatten classes of $H^2$. In the last section of the paper, we demonstrate the usef…
The geometric descriptions of the (essential) spectra of Toeplitz operators with piecewise continuous symbols are among the most beautiful results about Toeplitz operators on Hardy spaces $H^p$ with $1<p<\infty$. In the Hardy space $H^1$, the essential spectra of Toeplitz operators are known for continuous symbols and symbols in the Douglas algebra $C+H^\infty$. It is natural to ask whether the theory for piecewise continuous symbols can also be extended to $H^1$. We answer this question in negative and show in particular that the Toeplitz operator is never bounded on $H^1$ if its symbol has a…
In this paper, we study the product of a Hankel operator and a Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space. We give necessary and sufficient conditions of when such a product $H_f T_g$ is compact.
In this paper we characterize when the product of two block Toeplitz operators is a compact perturbation of a block Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space of the open unit disk. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the commutator of two block Toeplitz operators to be compact.
For truncated Toeplitz operators, which are compressions of multiplication operators to model subspaces of the Hardy space $H^2$, we obtain criteria for commutation relations. The results show an analogy to the case of Toeplitz matrices, and they extend the theory of Sedlock algebras.
In this paper, we study complex symmetry of Toeplitz operators and block Toeplitz operators. In particular, we give a characterization of complex symmetric block Toeplitz operators with the special conjugation on the vector-valued Hardy space $H_{{\mathbb C}^2}^2$. As some applications, we provide examples of such operators.
Let $Ω$ be either the unit polydisc $\mathbb D^d$ or the unit ball $\mathbb B_d$ in $\mathbb C^d$ and $G$ be a finite pseudoreflection group which acts on $Ω.$ Associated to each one-dimensional representation $\varrho$ of $G,$ we provide a notion of the (weighted) Hardy space $H^2_\varrho(Ω/G)$ on $Ω/G.$ Subsequently, we show that each $H^2_\varrho(Ω/G)$ is isometrically isomorphic to the relative invariant subspace of $H^2(Ω)$ associated to the representation $\varrho.$ For $Ω=\mathbb D^d,$ $G=\mathfrak{S}_d,$ the permutation group on $d$ symbols and $\varrho = $ the sign representation of $…
In this paper we use orthonormal basis for the Hardy space $H^{2}(\mathbb{T})$, formed by rational functions, to characterize complex symmetric Toeplitz operators on $H^{2}(\mathbb{T})$. As a result, we get examples of these operators whose symbols are non-trigonometric functions.
In this paper we consider compressions of $k^{th}$--order slant Toeplitz operators to the backward shift invariant subspaces of the classical Hardy space $H^2$. In particular, we characterize these operators using compressed shifts and finite rank operators of special kind.
We prove a number of results on the automorphisms of and isomorphisms between Hardy-Toeplitz algebras $\mathcal{T}(D)$ associated to bounded symmetric domains $D$: that the stable isomorphism class of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ determines $D$ (even when it is reducible), that for reducible domains $D=D_1\times\cdots \times D_s$ the automorphisms of the Shilov boundary $\check{S}(D)$ induced by those of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ permute the Shilov boundaries $\check{S}(D_i)$, and that by contrast to arbitrary solvable algebras, automorphisms of $\mathcal{T}(D)$ that are trivial on their character spaces $\check{S…
In this paper we investigate the reproducing kernel Hilbert space where the polylogarithm appears as kernel functions. This investigation begins with the properties of functions in this space, and here a connection to the classical Hardy space is shown through the Bose-Einstein integral equation. Next we consider function theoretic operators over the polylogarithmic Hardy space, such as multiplication and Toeplitz operators. It is determined that there are only trivial densely defined multiplication operators (and therefore only trivial bounded multipliers) over this space, which makes this sp…
In this paper we first study the structure of the scalar and vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. We then subsequently produce some fruitful applications of our new results. We produce a decomposition theorem for the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces with a finite defect. More specifically, we show every vector-valued nearly invariant subspace with a finite defect can be written as the isometric image of a backwards shift invariant subspace. We also show that there is a link between the vector-valued nearly invariant subspaces and the scalar-valued nearly invar…
We study a class of rotation invariant determinantal ensembles in the complex plane; examples include the eigenvalues of Gaussian random matrices and the roots of certain families of random polynomials. The main result is a criteria for a central limit theorem to hold for angular statistics of the points. The proof exploits an exact formula relating the generating function of such statistics to the determinant of a perturbed Toeplitz matrix.
In this paper we characterize when the semi-commutator $T_fT_g-T_{fg}$ of two Toeplitz operators $T_f$ and $T_g$ on the Hardy space of the bidisc is zero. We also show that there is no nonzero finite rank semi-commutator on the bidisc. Furthermore explicit examples of compact semi-commutators with symbols continuous on the bitorus $T^2$ are given.
A conjugation $C$ on a separable complex Hilbert space $\mathcal H$ is an antilinear operator that is isometric and involutive. In this notes, we characterize all conjugations on the Hardy-Hilbert space $H^{2}$ over the disk. In addition, we characterize complex symmetric Toeplitz operators with a special type of these conjugations.
This paper characterises the dual of the model space $K_I^1$, where $I$ is an inner function, intersected with the shifted Hardy space, $z H^1$. With this duality result, it is then shown that every bounded truncated Toeplitz operator on the model space $K_I^2$ has a bounded symbol if and only if every compact truncated Toeplitz operator on $K_I^2$ has a symbol which is of the form $I$ multiplied by a continuous function.
Motivated by Barr{\'ı}a-Halmos's \cite[Question 19]{barria1982asymptotic} and Halmos's \cite[Problem 237]{Halmos1978A}, we explore projections in Toeplitz algebra on the Hardy space. We show that the product of two Toeplitz (Hankel) operators is a projection if and only if it is the projection onto one of the invariant subspaces of the shift (backward shift) operator. As a consequence one obtains new proofs of criterion for Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators to be partial isometries. Furthermore, we completely characterize when the self-commutator of a Toeplitz operator is a projection. T…
A characterisation is given of bounded embeddings from weighted $L^2$ spaces on bounded intervals into $L^2$ spaces on the half-plane, induced by isomorphisms given by the Laplace transform onto weighted Hardy and Bergman spaces (Zen spaces). As an application necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the boundedness of truncated Hankel and Toeplitz integral operators, including the weighted case.
Sarason Toeplitz product problem asks when the operator TuTv is bounded on various Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, where u and v are analytic. The problem is highly nontrivial for Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space and the Bergman space (even in the case of the unit disk). In this paper, we provide a complete solution to the problem for a class of Fock spaces on the complex plane. In particular, this generalizes an earlier result of Cho, Park, and Zhu.
We show that an infinite Toeplitz+Hankel matrix $T(φ) + H(ψ)$ generates a bounded (compact) operator on $\ell^p(\mathbb{N}_0)$ with $1\leq p\leq \infty$ if and only if both $T(φ)$ and $H(ψ)$ are bounded (compact). We also give analogous characterizations for Toeplitz+Hankel operators acting on the reflexive Hardy spaces. In both cases, we provide an intrinsic characterization of bounded operators of Toeplitz+Hankel form similar to the Brown-Halmos theorem. In addition, we establish estimates for the norm and the essential norm of such operators.
Let $m \geq 1$ be an integer and let $H_m(\mathbb B)$ be the analytic functional Hilbert space on the unit ball $\mathbb B \subset \mathbb C^n$ given by the reproducing kernel $K_m(z,w) = (1 - \langle z,w \rangle)^{-m}$. We prove that Toeplitz operators with pluriharmonic symbol on $H_m(\mathbb B)$ can be characterized by an algebraic identity which extends the classical Brown-Halmos characterization of Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space of the unit disc as well as corresponding results of Louhichi and Olofsson for Toeplitz operators with harmonic symbol on weighted Bergman spaces of the di…
The paper deals with the invertibility of Toeplitz plus Hankel operators T(a)+H(b) acting on classical Hardy spaces on the unit circle T. It is supposed that the generating functions a and b satisfy the condition a(t)a(1/t)=b(t)b(1/t). Special attention is paid to the case of piecewise continuous generating functions. In some cases the dimensions of null spaces of the operator $T(a)+H(b)$ and its adjoint are described.
Wiener-Hopf factorisation plays an important role in the theory of Toeplitz operators. We consider here Toeplitz operators in the Hardy spaces $H^p$ of the upper half-plane and we review how their Fredholm properties can be studied in terms of a Wiener-Hopf factorisation of their symbols, obtaining necessary and sufficient conditions for the operator to be Fredholm or invertible, as well as formulae for their inverses or one-sided inverses when these exist. The results are applied to a class of singular integral equations in $L^p(\mathbb R)$.
We develop a complete Fredholm and invertibility theory for Toeplitz+Hankel operators $T(a)+H(b)$ on the Hardy space $H^p$, $1<p<\infty$, with piecewise continuous functions $a,b$ defined on the unit circle which are subject to the condition $a(t)a(t^{-1})=b(t)b(t^{-1})$, $|t|=1$. In particular, in the case of Fredholmness, formulas for the defect numbers are established. The results are applied to several important examples.
The paper describes various approaches to the invertibility of Toeplitz plus Hankel operators in Hardy and $l^p$-spaces, integral and difference Wiener-Hopf plus Hankel operators and generalized Toeplitz plus Hankel operators. Special attention is paid to a newly developed method, which allows to establish necessary, sufficient and also necessary and sufficient conditions of invertibility, one-sided and generalized invertibility for wide classes of operators and derive efficient formulas for the corresponding inverses. The work also contains a number of problems whose solution would be of inte…
Toeplitz plus Hankel operators $T(a)+H(b)$, $a,b\in L^\infty$ acting on the classical Hardy spaces $H^p, 1<p<\infty$, are studied. If the generating functions $a$ and $b$ satisfy the so-called matching condition $a(t) a(1/t)=b(t) b(1/t)$, an effective description of the structure of the kernel and cokernel of the corresponding operator is given. The results depend on the behaviour of two auxiliary scalar Toeplitz operators, and if the generating functions $a$ and $b$ are piecewise continuous, more detailed results are obtained.
In this paper we consider the C*-algebra $C^{*}(\{C_φ\}\cup\mathcal{T}(PQC(\mathbb{T})))/K(H^{2})$ generated by Toeplitz operators with piece-wise quasi-continuous symbols and a composition operator induced by a parabolic linear fractional non-automorphism symbol modulo compact operators on the Hilbert-Hardy space $H^{2}$. This C*-algebra is commutative. We characterize its maximal ideal space. We apply our results to the question of determining the essential spectra of linear combinations of a class of composition operators and Toeplitz operators.
This work is a generalization of the results in [Gul] to bi-disc case. As in [Gul], quasi-parabolic composition operators on the Hilbert-Hardy space of the bi-disc are written as a linear combination of Toeplitz operators and Fourier multipliers. The C*-algebra generated by Toeplitz operators and Fourier multipliers on the Hilbert-Hardy space of the bi-disc is written as the tensor product of the similar C*-algebra in one variable with itself. As a result we find a nontrivial set lying inside the essential spectra of quasi-parabolic composition operators.
We study idempotent, model, and Toeplitz operators that attain the norm. Notably, we prove that if $\mathcal{Q}$ is a backward shift invariant subspace of the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$, then the model operator $S_{\mathcal{Q}}$ attains its norm. Here $S_{\mathcal{Q}} = P_{\mathcal{Q}}M_z|_{\mathcal{Q}}$, the compression of the shift $M_z$ on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$ to $\mathcal{Q}$.
In this paper, we show that on the weighted Bergman space of the unit disk the essential norm of a noncompact Hankel operator equals its distance to the set of compact Hankel operators and is realized by infinitely many compact Hankel operators, which is analogous to the theorem of Axler, Berg, Jewell and Shields on the Hardy space in Axler et al. (1979); moreover, the distance is realized by infinitely many compact Hankel operators with symbols continuous on the closure of the unit disk and vanishing on the unit circle.
We introduce a new class of conjugations and characterize complex symmetric Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space with respect to those conjugations. Also, we prove that complex symmetricity and \uet~ property are the same for a certain class of Toeplitz operators. We also discuss the analytic symmetricity for Toeplitz operators. Our results extend several known results by providing unified ways of treating them.
It is well known that on the Hardy space $H^2(\mathbb{D})$ or weighted Bergman space $A^2_α(\mathbb{D})$ over the unit disk, the adjoint of a linear fractional composition operator equals the product of a composition operator and two Toeplitz operators. On $S^2(\mathbb{D})$, the space of analytic functions on the disk whose first derivatives belong to $H^2(\mathbb{D})$, Heller showed that a similar formula holds modulo the ideal of compact operators. In this paper we investigate what the situation is like on other weighted Hardy spaces.
We formulate and establish a noncommutative version of the well known Helson-Szego theorem about the angle between past and future for subdiagonal subalgebras. We then proceed to use this theorem to characterise the symbols of invertible Toeplitz operators on the noncommutative Hardy spaces associated to subdiagonal subalgebras.
