We study a class of rotation invariant determinantal ensembles in the complex plane; examples include the eigenvalues of Gaussian random matrices and the roots of certain families of random polynomials. The main result is a criteria for a central limit theorem to hold for angular statistics of the points. The proof exploits an exact formula relating the generating function of such statistics to the determinant of a perturbed Toeplitz matrix.
We give a complete description of bounded radial Toeplitz operators on the Hilbert space associated with a Cayley tree. As an application, we give a complete classification of a rich family of determinantal point processes on Cayley trees whose correlation kernels and thus distributions are invariant under the action of the graph automorphisms of the Cayley trees.
We study the correlation functions for determinantal point processes defined by products of infinite minors of block Toeplitz matrices. The motivation for studying such processes comes from doubly periodically weighted tilings of planar domains, such as the two-periodic Aztec diamond. Our main results are double integral formulas for the correlation kernels. In general, the integrand is a matrix-valued function built out of a factorization of the matrix-valued weight. In concrete examples the factorization can be worked out in detail and we obtain explicit integrands. In particular, we find an…
We introduce and give a more or less complete study of a family of branching-Toeplitz operators on the Hilbert space $\ell^2(T_q)$ indexed by a rooted homogeneous tree $T_q$ of degree $q\ge 2$. The finite dimensional analogues of such operators form a very natural family of structured sparse matrices called branching-Toeplitz matrices and will also be investigated. The branching-Toeplitz operators/matrices in this paper should be viewed as natural generalizations of the standard Toeplitz operators/matrices. We will apply our results to construct a family of determinantal point processes on hom…
Given a sequence $(ξ_n)$ of standard i.i.d complex Gaussian random variables, Peres and Virág (in the paper ``Zeros of the i.i.d. Gaussian power series: a conformally invariant determinantal process'' {\it Acta Math.} (2005) 194, 1-35) discovered the striking fact that the zeros of the random power series $f(z) = \sum_{n=1}^\infty ξ_n z^{n-1}$ in the complex unit disc $\mathbb{D}$ constitute a determinantal point process. The study of the zeros of the general random series $f(z)$ where the restriction of independence is relaxed upon the random variables $(ξ_n)$ is an important open problem. Th…
We study the spectra of general $N\times N$ Toeplitz matrices given by symbols in the Wiener Algebra perturbed by small complex Gaussian random matrices, in the regime $N\gg 1$. We prove an asymptotic formula for the number of eigenvalues of the perturbed matrix in smooth domains. We show that these eigenvalues follow a Weyl law with probability sub-exponentially close to $1$, as $N\gg1$, in particular that most eigenvalues of the perturbed Toeplitz matrix are close to the curve in the complex plane given by the symbol of the unperturbed Toeplitz matrix.
Determinantal and permanental processes are point processes with a correlation function given by a determinant or a permanent. Their atoms exhibit mutual attraction of repulsion, thus these processes are very far from the uncorrelated situation encountered in Poisson models. We establish a quasi-invariance result : we show that if atoms locations are perturbed along a vector field, the resulting process is still a determinantal (respectively permanental) process, the law of which is absolutely continuous with respect to the original distribution. Based on this formula, following Bismut approac…
Given a trigonometric polynomial f:[0,1]\to[0,1] of degree m, one can define a corresponding stationary process {X_i}_{i\in Z} via determinants of the Toeplitz matrix for f. We show that for m=1 this process, which is trivially one-dependent, is a two-block-factor.
We study the spectra of $N\times N$ Toeplitz band matrices perturbed by small complex Gaussian random matrices, in the regime $N\gg 1$. We prove a probabilistic Weyl law, which provides an precise asymptotic formula for the number of eigenvalues in certain domains, which may depend on $N$, with probability sub-exponentially (in $N$) close to $1$. We show that most eigenvalues of the perturbed Toeplitz matrix are at a distance of at most $\mathcal{O}(N^{-1+\varepsilon})$, for all $\varepsilon >0$, to the curve in the complex plane given by the symbol of the unperturbed Toeplitz matrix.
We show that the symplectic and orthogonal character analogues of Okounkov's Schur measure (on integer partitions) are determinantal, with explicit correlation kernels. We apply this to prove certain Borodin-Okounkov-Gessel-type results concerning Toeplitz+Hankel and Fredholm determinants; a Szegő-type limit theorem; an edge Baik-Deift-Johansson-type asymptotical result for certain symplectic and orthogonal analogues of the poissonized Plancherel measure; and a similar result for actual poissonized Plancherel measures supported on "almost symmetric" partitions.
We study a class of stationary processes indexed by $\Z^d$ that are defined via minors of $d$-dimensional (multilevel) Toeplitz matrices. We obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for phase multiplicity (the existence of a phase transition) analogous to that which occurs in statistical mechanics. Phase uniqueness is equivalent to the presence of a strong $K$ property, a particular strengthening of the usual $K$ (Kolmogorov) property. We show that all of these processes are Bernoulli shifts (isomorphic to i.i.d. processes in the sense of ergodic theory). We obtain estimates of their entropi…
Consider an $N\times N$ Toeplitz matrix $T_N$ with symbol ${a }(λ) := \sum_{\ell=-d_2}^{d_1} a_\ell λ^\ell$, perturbed by an additive noise matrix $N^{-γ} E_N$, where the entries of $E_N$ are centered i.i.d.~random variables of unit variance and $γ>1/2$. It is known that the empirical measure of eigenvalues of the perturbed matrix converges weakly, as $N\to\infty$, to the law of ${a}(U)$, where $U$ is distributed uniformly on $\mathbb{S}^1$. In this paper, we consider the outliers, i.e. eigenvalues that are at a positive ($N$-independent) distance from ${a}(\mathbb{S}^1)$. We prove that there …
The Thoma cone is an infinite-dimensional locally compact space, which is closely related to the space of extremal characters of the infinite symmetric group. In another context, the Thoma cone appears as the set of parameters for totally positive, upper triangular Toeplitz matrices of infinite size. The purpose of the paper is to construct a family of continuous time Markov processes on the Thoma cone, depending on two continuous parameters. Our construction largely exploits specific properties of the Thoma cone related to its representation-theoretic origin, although we do not use representa…
In certain point processes, the configuration of points outside a bounded domain determines, with probability 1, certain statistical features of the points within the domain. This notion, called rigidity, was introduced in a work of Ghosh and Peres. In this paper, rigidity and the related notion of tolerance are examined systematically and point processes with rigidity of various degrees are introduced. Natural classes of point processes such as determinantal point processes, zero sets of Gaussian entire functions and perturbed lattices are examined from the point of view of rigidity, and gene…
We study the eigenvalues of the Toeplitz quantization of complex-valued functions on the torus subject to small random perturbations given by a complex-valued random matrix whose entries are independent copies of a random variable with mean $0$, variance $1$ and bounded fourth moment. We prove that the eigenvalues of the perturbed operator satisfy a Weyl law with probability close to one, which proves in particular a conjecture by T. Christiansen and M. Zworski.
We study the power spectrum of eigen-angles of random matrices drawn from the circular unitary ensemble ${\rm CUE}(N)$ and show that it can be evaluated in terms of either a Fredholm determinant, or a Toeplitz determinant, or a sixth Painlevé function. In the limit of infinite-dimensional matrices, $N\rightarrow\infty$, we derive a ${\it\, concise\,}$ parameter-free formula for the power spectrum which involves a fifth Painlevé transcendent and interpret it in terms of the ${\rm Sine}_2$ determinantal random point field. Further, we discuss a universality of the predicted power spectrum law an…
