We show that the symplectic and orthogonal character analogues of Okounkov's Schur measure (on integer partitions) are determinantal, with explicit correlation kernels. We apply this to prove certain Borodin-Okounkov-Gessel-type results concerning Toeplitz+Hankel and Fredholm determinants; a Szegő-type limit theorem; an edge Baik-Deift-Johansson-type asymptotical result for certain symplectic and orthogonal analogues of the poissonized Plancherel measure; and a similar result for actual poissonized Plancherel measures supported on "almost symmetric" partitions.
Sub-Poissonian estimates for exponential moments of additive functionals over pairs of particles with respect to determinantal and symplectic Pfaffian point processes governed by entire functions
We consider random normal matrix and planar symplectic ensembles, which can be interpreted as two-dimensional Coulomb gases having determinantal and Pfaffian structures, respectively. For general radially symmetric potentials, we derive the asymptotic expansions of the log-partition functions up to and including the $O(1)$-terms as the number $N$ of particles increases. Notably, our findings stress that the formulas of the $O(\log N)$- and $O(1)$-terms in these expansions depend on the connectivity of the droplet. For random normal matrix ensembles, our formulas agree with the predictions prop…
For a class of one-dimensional determinantal point processes including those induced by orthogonal projections with integrable kernels satisfying a growth condition, it is proved that their conditional measures, with respect to the configuration in the complement of a compact interval, are orthogonal polynomial ensembles with explicitly found weights. Examples include the sine-process and the process with the Bessel kernel. The argument uses the quasi-invariance, established in [1], of our point processes under the group of piecewise isometries of the real line.
When the number of particles $N$ is finite, the noncolliding Brownian motion (BM) and the noncolliding squared Bessel process with index $ν> -1$ (BESQ$^{(ν)}$) are determinantal processes for arbitrary fixed initial configurations. In the present paper we prove that, if initial configurations are distributed with orthogonal symmetry, they are Pfaffian processes in the sense that any multitime correlation functions are expressed by Pfaffians. The $2 \times 2$ skew-symmetric matrix-valued correlation kernels of the Pfaffians processes are explicitly obtained by the equivalence between the noncol…
We investigate the average characteristic polynomial $\mathbb E\big[\prod_{i=1}^N(z-x_i)\big] $ where the $x_i$'s are real random variables which form a determinantal point process associated to a bounded projection operator. For a subclass of point processes, which contains Orthogonal Polynomial Ensembles and Multiple Orthogonal Polynomial Ensembles, we provide a sufficient condition for its limiting zero distribution to match with the limiting distribution of the random variables, almost surely, as $N$ goes to infinity. Moreover, such a condition turns out to be sufficient to strengthen the …
The classification of irreducible, spherical characters of the infinite-dimensional unitary/orthogonal/symplectic groups can be obtained by finding all possible limits of normalized, irreducible characters of the corresponding finite-dimensional groups, as the rank tends to infinity. We solve a q-deformed version of the latter problem for orthogonal and symplectic groups, extending previously known results for the unitary group. The proof is based on novel determinantal and double-contour integral formulas for the q-specialized characters.
We establish formulae for the moments of the moments of the characteristic polynomials of random orthogonal and symplectic matrices in terms of certain lattice point count problems. This allows us to establish asymptotic formulae when the matrix-size tends to infinity in terms of the volumes of certain regions involving continuous Gelfand-Tsetlin patterns with constraints. The results we find differ from those in the unitary case considered previously
Rosengren and Schlosser introduced notions of ${\it R}_N$-theta functions for the seven types of irreducible reduced affine root systems, ${\it R}_N={\it A}_{N-1}$, ${\it B}_{N}$, ${\it B}^{\vee}_N$, ${\it C}_{N}$, ${\it C}^{\vee}_N$, ${\it BC}_{N}$, ${\it D}_{N}$, $N \in \mathbb{N}$, and gave the Macdonald denominator formulas. We prove that, if the variables of the ${\it R}_N$-theta functions are properly scaled with $N$, they construct seven sets of biorthogonal functions, each of which has a continuous parameter $t \in (0, t_{\ast})$ with given $0< t_{\ast} < \infty$. Following the standar…
We show, using either Fock space techniques or Macdonald difference operators, that certain symplectic and orthogonal analogues of Okounkov's Schur measure are determinantal with kernels given by explicit double contour integrals. We give two applications: one equates certain Toeplitz+Hankel determinants of random matrix theory with appropriate Fredholm determinants and computes Szegő asymptotics for the former; another finds that the simplest examples of said measures exhibit discrete sine kernel asymptotics in the bulk and Airy 2 to 1 kernel---along with a certain dual---asymptotics at the e…
We derive the limiting matrix kernels for the the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic ensembles scaled at the edge, with proofs of convergence in the operator norms that assure convergence of the determinants.
We introduce a family of discrete determinantal point processes related to orthogonal polynomials on the real line, with correlation kernels defined via spectral projections for the associated Jacobi matrices. For classical weights, we show how such ensembles arise as limits of various hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials ensembles. We then prove that the q-Laplace transform of the height function of the ASEP with step initial condition is equal to the expectation of a simple multiplicative functional on a discrete Laguerre ensemble --- a member of the new family. This allows us to obtain the…
We study the characteristic polynomials of both the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles. We show that for both ensembles, powers of the absolute value of the characteristic polynomials converge in law to Gaussian multiplicative chaos measures after normalization for sufficiently small real powers. The main tool is a new asymptotic relation between the fractional moments of the absolute characteristic polynomials of Gaussian Orthogonal, Unitary, and Symplectic Ensembles.
We consider the universality of the nearest neighbour eigenvalue spacing distribution in invariant random matrix ensembles. Focussing on orthogonal and symplectic invariant ensembles, we show that the empirical spacing distribution converges in a uniform way. More precisely, the main result states that the expected Kolmogorov distance of the empirical spacing distribution from its universal limit converges to zero as the matrix size tends to infinity.
We compute the bulk limit of the correlation functions for the uniform measure on lozenge tilings of a hexagon. The limiting determinantal process is a translation invariant extension of the discrete sine process, which also describes the ergodic Gibbs measure of an appropriate slope.
The first main result of this note, Theorem 1.2, establishes the determinantal identities (7) and (8) for the expectation, under a determinantal point process governed by an integrable projection kernel, of scaling limits of characteristic polynomials sampled at several points. The determinantal identities (7) and (8) can be seen as the scaling limit of the identity of Fyodorov and Strahov for the averages of ratios of products of the values of the characteristic polynomial of a Gaussian unitary matrix. Borodin, Olshanski and Strahov derived the determinantal identity of Fyodorov and Strahov f…
We revisit the work of the first named author and using simpler algebraic arguments we calculate integrals of polynomial functions with respect to the Haar measure on the unitary group U(d). The previous result provided exact formulas only for 2d bigger than the degree of the integrated polynomial and we show that these formulas remain valid for all values of d. Also, we consider the integrals of polynomial functions on the orthogonal group O(d) and the symplectic group Sp(d). We obtain an exact character expansion and the asymptotic behavior for large d. Thus we can show the asymptotic freene…
Determinantal point processes have arisen in diverse settings in recent years and have been investigated intensively. We study basic combinatorial and probabilistic aspects in the discrete case. Our main results concern relationships with matroids, stochastic domination, negative association, completeness for infinite matroids, tail triviality, and a method for extension of results from orthogonal projections to positive contractions. We also present several new avenues for further investigation, involving Hilbert spaces, combinatorics, homology, and group representations, among other areas.
For a broad class of point processes, including determinantal point processes, we construct associated marked and conditional ensembles, which allow to study a random configuration in the point process, based on information about a randomly incomplete part of the configuration. We show that our construction yields a well behaving transformation of sufficiently regular point processes. In the case of determinantal point processes, we explain that special cases of the conditional ensembles already appear implicitly in the literature, namely in the study of unitary invariant random matrix ensembl…
This paper is the first in a series of three. The main result, Theorem 1.11, gives an explicit description of the ergodic decomposition for infinite Pickrell measures on spaces of infinite complex matrices. The main construction is that of sigma-finite analogues of determinantal measures on spaces of configurations. An example is the infinite Bessel point process, the scaling limit of sigma-finite analogues of Jacobi orthogonal polynomial ensembles. The statement of Theorem 1.11 is that the infinite Bessel point process (subject to an appropriate change of variables) is precisely the ergodic d…
We propose a simple one sided Monte-Carlo algorithm to distinguish, to any given degree of certainty, between certain symplectic and orthogonal groups over fields of odd order. The algorithm does not use an order oracle and works in polynomial time.
We derive Painlevé--type expressions for the distribution of the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles in the edge scaling limit. The work of Johnstone and Soshnikov (see [7], [10]) implies the immediate relevance of our formulas for the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue of the appropriate Wishart distribution.
A Palm hierarchy for determinantal point processes with the confluent hypergeometric kernel, the decomposing measures in the problem of harmonic analysis on the infinite-dimensional unitary group
Markov chains are used to give a purely probabilistic way of understanding the conjugacy classes of the finite symplectic and orthogonal groups in odd characteristic. As a corollary of these methods one obtains a probabilistic proof of Steinberg's count of unipotent matrices and generalizations of formulas of Rudvalis and Shinoda.
The partition function of the Chern-Simons theory on the three-sphere with the unitary group $U(N)$ provides a one-matrix model. The corresponding $N$-particle system can be mapped to the determinantal point process whose correlation kernel is expressed by using the Stieltjes-Wigert orthogonal polynomials. The matrix model and the point process are regarded as $q$-extensions of the random matrix model in the Gaussian unitary ensemble and its eigenvalue point process, respectively. We prove the convergence of the $N$-particle system to an infinite-dimensional determinantal point process in $N \…

Stochastic gradient descent (SGD) is a cornerstone of machine learning. When the number N of data items is large, SGD relies on constructing an unbiased estimator of the gradient of the empirical risk using a small subset of the original dataset, called a minibatch. Default minibatch construction involves uniformly sampling a subset of the desired size, but alternatives have been explored for variance reduction. In particular, experimental evidence suggests drawing minibatches from determinantal point processes (DPPs), distributions over minibatches that favour diversity among selected items. …
We derive Painlevé--type expressions for the distribution of the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue in the Gaussian Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles in the edge scaling limit. This work generalizes to general $m$ the $m=1$ results of Tracy and Widom [23]. The results of Johnstone and Soshnikov (see [15], [19]) imply the immediate relevance of our formulas for the $m^{th}$ largest eigenvalue of the appropriate Wishart distribution.
Determinantal point processes are characterized by a special structural property of the correlation functions: they are given by minors of a correlation kernel. However, unlike the correlation functions themselves, this kernel is not defined intrinsically, and the same determinantal process can be generated by many different kernels. The non-uniqueness of a correlation kernel causes difficulties in studying determinantal processes. We propose a formalism which allows to find a distinguished correlation kernel under certain additional assumptions. The idea is to exploit a connection between det…
We show that the distance in total variation between $(\mathrm{Tr}\ U, \frac{1}{\sqrt{2}}\mathrm{Tr}\ U^2, \cdots, \frac{1}{\sqrt{m}}\mathrm{Tr}\ U^m)$ and a real Gaussian vector, where $U$ is a Haar distributed orthogonal or symplectic matrix of size $2n$ or $2n+1$, is bounded by $Γ(2\frac{n}{m}+1)^{-\frac{1}{2}}$ times a correction. The correction term is explicit and holds for all $n\geq m^4$, for $m$ sufficiently large. For $n\geq m^3$ we obtain the bound $(\frac{n}{m})^{-c\sqrt{\frac{n}{m}}}$ with an explicit constant $c$. Our method of proof is based on an identity of Toeplitz+Hankel det…
