In this paper we characterize when the product of two block Toeplitz operators is a compact perturbation of a block Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space of the open unit disk. Necessary and sufficient conditions are given for the commutator of two block Toeplitz operators to be compact.
Toeplitz matrices are ubiquitous and play important roles across many areas of mathematics. In this paper, we present some algebraic results concerning block Toeplitz matrices with block entries belonging to a commutative algebra $Å$. The characterization of normal block Toeplitz matrices with entries from $Å$ is also obtained.
The maximal commutative subalgebras containing only Toeplitz matrices have been identified as generalized circulants. A similar simple description cannot be obtained for block Toeplitz matrices. We introduce and investigate certain families of maximal commutative algebras of block Toeplitz matrices.
In this paper, we study complex symmetry of Toeplitz operators and block Toeplitz operators. In particular, we give a characterization of complex symmetric block Toeplitz operators with the special conjugation on the vector-valued Hardy space $H_{{\mathbb C}^2}^2$. As some applications, we provide examples of such operators.
The maximal algebras of scalar Toeplitz matrices are known to be formed by generalized circulants. The identification of algebras consisting of block Toeplitz matrices is a harder problem, that has received little attention up to now. We consider the case when the block entries of the matrices belong to a commutative algebra $ \mathcal{A} $. After obtaining some general results, we classify all the maximal algebras for certain particular cases of $ \mathcal{A}$.
In this note known formulas for the product of Toeplitz operators are revisited in the context of their applications to the study of Fredholmness, boundedness of Toeplitz products, and the Berezin-Toeplitz quantization. A few open problems are also mentioned.
In this paper we are concerned with hyponormality and subnormality of block Toeplitz operators acting on the vector-valued Hardy space $H^2_{\mathbb{C}^n}$ of the unit circle. Firstly, we establish a tractable and explicit criterion on the hyponormality of block Toeplitz operators having bounded type symbols via the triangularization theorem for compressions of the shift operator. Secondly, we consider the gap between hyponormality and subnormality for block Toeplitz operators. This is closely related to Halmos's Problem 5: Is every subnormal Toeplitz operator either normal or analytic? We sho…
In this paper, we study the product of a Hankel operator and a Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space. We give necessary and sufficient conditions of when such a product $H_f T_g$ is compact.
A truncated Toeplitz operator is the compression of a classical Toeplitz operator on the Hardy space to a model space. A truncated Hankel operator is the compression of a Hankel operator on the Hardy space to the orthogonal complement of a model space. We study the product of a truncated Hankel operator and a truncated Toeplitz operator, and characterize when such a product is zero or compact.
We prove Nehari's theorem for integral Hankel and Toeplitz operators on simple convex polytopes in several variables. A special case of the theorem, generalizing the boundedness criterion of the Hankel and Toeplitz operators on the Paley-Wiener space, reads as follows. Let $Ξ= (0,1)^d$ be a $d$-dimensional cube, and for a distribution $f$ on $2Ξ$, consider the Hankel operator $$Γ_f (g)(x)=\int_Ξ f(x+y) g(y) \, dy, \quad x \inΞ.$$ Then $Γ_f$ extends to a bounded operator on $L^2(Ξ)$ if and only if there is a bounded function $b$ on $\mathbb{R}^d$ whose Fourier transform coincides with $f$ on $2…
Matrix valued truncated Toeplitz operators act on vector-valued model spaces. They represent a generalization of block Toeplitz matrices. A characterization of these operators analogue to the scalar case is obtained, as well as the determination of the symbols that produce the zero operator.
In this paper, we investigate the boundedness of Toeplitz product $T_{f}T_{g}$ and Hankel product $H_{f}^{*} H_{g}$ on Fock-Sobolev space for two polynomials $f$ and $g$ in $z,\overline{z}\in\mathbb{C}^{n}$. As a result, the boundedness of Toeplitz operator $T_{f}$ and Hankel operator $H_{f}$ with the polynomial symbol $f$ in $z,\overline{z}\in\mathbb{C}^{n}$ is characterized.
The results on the inversion of convolution operators and Toeplitz matrices in the 1-D (one dimensional) case are classical and have numerous applications. We consider a 2-D case of Toeplitz-block Toeplitz matrices, describe a minimal information, which is necessary to recover the inverse matrices, and give a complete characterisation of the inverse matrices.
Sarason Toeplitz product problem asks when the operator TuTv is bounded on various Hilbert spaces of analytic functions, where u and v are analytic. The problem is highly nontrivial for Toeplitz operators on the Hardy space and the Bergman space (even in the case of the unit disk). In this paper, we provide a complete solution to the problem for a class of Fock spaces on the complex plane. In particular, this generalizes an earlier result of Cho, Park, and Zhu.
Recently, Borodin and Okounkov established a remarkable identity for Toeplitz determinants. Two other proofs of this identity were subsequently found by Basor and Widom, who also extended the formula to the block case. We here give one more proof, also for the block case. This proof is based on a formula for the inverse of a finite block Toeplitz matrix obtained in the late seventies by Silbermann and the author.
It is shown that the kernel of a Toeplitz operator with $2\times 2$ symbol $G$ can be described exactly in terms of any given function in a very wide class, its image under multiplication by $G$, and their left inverses, if the latter exist. As a consequence, under many circumstances the kernel of a block Toeplitz operator may be described as the product of a space of scalar complex-valued functions by a fixed column vector of functions. Such kernels are said to be of scalar type, and in this paper they are studied and described explicitly in many concrete situations. Applications are given to…
We compute the asymptotics of a block Toeplitz determinant which arises in the classical dimer model for the triangular lattice when considering the monomer-monomer correlation function. The model depends on a parameter interpolating between the square lattice ($t=0$) and the triangular lattice ($t=1$), and we obtain the asymptotics for $0<t\le 1$. For $0<t<1$ we apply the Szegö Limit Theorem for block Toeplitz determinants. The main difficulty is to evaluate the constant term in the asymptotics, which is generally given only in a rather abstract form.
We propose a method for computing any Gelfand-Dickey tau function living in Segal-Wilson Grassmannian as the asymptotics of block Toeplitz determinant associated to a certain class of symbols. Also truncated block Toeplitz determinants associated to the same symbols are shown to be tau function for rational reductions of KP. Connection with Riemann-Hilbert problems is investigated both from the point of view of integrable systems and block Toeplitz operator theory. Examples of applications to algebro-geometric solutions are given.
For any bounded measurable function $f$ on the unit ball $B_n$, let $T_f$ be the Toeplitz operator with symbol $f$ acting on the Bergman space $A^2(B_n)$. The Zero-Product Problem asks: if $f_1,..., f_N$ are bounded measurable functions such that $T_{f_1}... T_{f_N}=0$, does it follow that one of the functions must be zero almost everywhere? This paper give the affirmative answer to this question when all except possibly one of the symbols are radial functions. The answer in the general case remains unknown.
We relate dual-band general Toeplitz operators to block truncated Toeplitz operators and, via equivalence after extension, with Toeplitz operators with $4 \times 4$ matrix symbols. We discuss their norm, their kernel, Fredhomlness, invertibility and spectral properties in various situations, focusing on the spectral properties of the dual-band shift, which turns out to be considerably complex, leading to new and nontrivial connections with the boundary behaviour of the associated inner function.
For any function $f$ in $L^{\infty}(\mathbb{D})$, let $T_f$ denote the corresponding Toeplitz operator the Bergman space $A^2(\mathbb{D})$. A recent result of D. Luecking shows that if $T_f$ has finite rank then $f$ must be the zero function. Using a refined version of this result, we show that if all except possibly one of the functions $f_1,..., f_{m}$ are radial and $T_{f_1}... T_{f_m}$ has finite rank, then one of these functions must be zero.
We prove a higher order asymptotic formula for traces of finite block Toeplitz matrices with symbols belonging to Hölder-Zygmund spaces. The remainder in this formula goes to zero very rapidly for very smooth symbols. This formula refine previous asymptotic trace formulas by Szegö and Widom and complement higher order asymptotic formulas for determinants of finite block Toeplitz matrices due to Böttcher and Silbermann.
In this article, we introduce a new class of conjugations in the scalar valued Hardy space $H^2_{\mathbb{C}}(\mathbb{D})$ and provide a characterization of a complex symmetric Toeplitz operator $T_ϕ$ with respect to these newly introduced conjugations in various cases. Moreover, we obtain a characterization of a complex symmetric block Toeplitz operator $T_Φ$ on the vector valued Hardy space $\hdct$ with respect to certain conjugations introduced in \cite{CamaGP,KangKoLee,LeeKo2019}.
We derive novel explicit formulas for the inverses of truncated block Toeplitz matrices that correspond to a multivariate minimal stationary process. The main ingredients of the formulas are the Fourier coefficients of the phase function attached to the spectral density of the process. The derivation of the formulas is based on a recently developed finite prediction theory applied to the dual process of the stationary process. We illustrate the usefulness of the formulas by two applications. The first one is a strong convergence result for solutions of general block Toeplitz systems for a mult…
We study subnormal Toeplitz operators on the vector-valued Hardy space of the unit circle, along with an appropriate reformulation of P.R. Halmos's Problem 5: Which subnormal block Toeplitz operators are either normal or analytic? We extend and prove Abrahamse's Theorem to the case of matrix-valued symbols; that is, we show that every subnormal block Toeplitz operator with bounded type symbol (i.e., a quotient of two analytic functions), whose co-analytic part has a "coprime decomposition," is normal or analytic. We also prove that the coprime decomposition condition is essential. Finally, we …
We study the spectrum of the product of two Toeplitz operators. Assume that the symbols of these operators are continuous and real-valued and that one of them is non-negative. We prove that the spectrum of the product of finite section Toeplitz matrices converges to the spectrum of the product of the semi-infinite Toeplitz operators. We give an example showing that the supremum of this set is not always the supremum of the product of the two symbols. Finally, we provide an application in probability which is the first motivation of this study. More precisely, we obtain a large deviation princi…
This paper deals with subnormality of Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued symbols and, in particular, with an appropriate reformulation of Halmos's Problem 5: Which subnormal Toeplitz operators with matrix-valued symbols are either normal or analytic? In 1976, M. Abrahamse showed that if $φ\in L^\infty$ is such that $φ$ or $\overlineφ$ is of bounded type and if $T_φ$ is subnormal, then $T_φ$ is either normal or analytic. In this paper we establish a matrix-valued version of Abrahamse's Theorem and then apply this result to solve the following Toeplitz completion problem: Find the unspecified…
We give a necessary and a sufficient condition for the boundedness of the Toeplitz product $T_FT_{G^*}$ on the vector valued Bergman space $L_a^2(\mathbb{C}^n)$, where $F$ and $G$ are matrix symbols with scalar valued Bergman space entries. The results generalize existing results in the scalar valued Bergman space case. We also characterize boundedness and invertibility of Toeplitz products $T_FT_{G^*}$ in terms of the Berezin transform, generalizing results found by Zheng and Stroethoff for the scalar valued Bergman space.
We consider the Toeplitz operator with symbol z^n+C|z|^s acting on certain weighted Bergman spaces and determine for what values of the constant C this operator is hyponormal. The condition is presented in terms of the norm of an explicit block Jacobi matrix.
Let $f$ and $g$ be functions, not identically zero, in the Fock space $F^2$ of $C_n$. We show that the product $T_fT_{\bar g}$ of Toeplitz operators on $F^2$ is bounded if and only if $f(z)=e^{q(z)}$ and $g(z)=ce^{-q(z)}$, where $c$ is a nonzero constant and $q$ is a linear polynomial.
In this paper we study the product of Toeplitz operators on the harmonic Bergman space of the unit disk of the complex plane C. Mainly, we discuss when the product of two quasihomogeneous Toeplitz operators is also a Toeplitz operator, and when such operators commute.
Motivated by Barr{\'ı}a-Halmos's \cite[Question 19]{barria1982asymptotic} and Halmos's \cite[Problem 237]{Halmos1978A}, we explore projections in Toeplitz algebra on the Hardy space. We show that the product of two Toeplitz (Hankel) operators is a projection if and only if it is the projection onto one of the invariant subspaces of the shift (backward shift) operator. As a consequence one obtains new proofs of criterion for Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators to be partial isometries. Furthermore, we completely characterize when the self-commutator of a Toeplitz operator is a projection. T…
We study the asymptotic expansion of the product of two Toeplitz operators on the Fock space. In comparison to earlier results we require significantly less derivatives and get the expansion to arbitrary order. This, in particular, improves a result of Borthwick related to Toeplitz quantization. In addition, we derive an intertwining identity between the Berezin star product and the sharp product.
In sprite by Berger-Coburn theorems and their conjecture in \cite{Coburn1994}, we use the Fourier transform to decompose $ T_{g}$ as an infinite sum of Toeplitz operators with symbols which have compact support in the frequency domain. As a consequence, we obtain a sufficient condition for $ T_{g}$ to be bounded in terms of the Carleson measure conditions defined by the heat transform of the symbol $g$. Moreover the decomposition of a Toeplitz operator leads us to get easily understanding that for a bounded function $g$, if its Berezin transform vanishes at infinity, then the Toeplitz operator…
A recent paper of A.~Connes and W.D.~van Suijlekom identifies the operator system of $n\times n$ Toeplitz matrices with the dual of the space of all trigonometric polynomials of degree less than $n$. The present paper examines this identification in somewhat more detail by showing explicitly that the Connes--van Suijlekom isomorphism is a unital complete order isomorphism of operator systems. Consequences of this complete order isomorphism are also examined, yielding two special results of note: (i) that every positive linear map of the $n\times n$ complex matrices is completely positive when …
There are three main results in this paper. First, we find an easily computable and simple condition which is necessary and sufficient for a commuting tuple of contractions to possess a non-zero Toeplitz operator. This condition is just that the adjoint of the product of the contractions is not pure. On one hand this brings out the importance of the product of the contractions and on the other hand, the non-pureness turns out to be equivalent to the existence of a pseudo-extension to a tuple of commuting unitaries. The second main result is a commutant pseudo-extension theorem obtained by stud…
Let R be a finite Blaschke product of degree at least two with R(0)=0. Then there exists a relation between the associated composition operator C_R on the Hardy space and the C*-algebra associated with the complex dynamical system on the Julia set of R. We study the C*-algebra generated by both the composition operator C_R and the Toeplitz operator T_z to show that the quotient algebra by the ideal of the compact operators is isomorphic to the C*-algebra associated with the complex dynamical system, which is simple and purely infinite.
Let R be a finite Blaschke product. We study the C*-algebra TC_R generated by both the composition operator C_R and the Toeplitz operator T_z on the Hardy space. We show that the simplicity of the quotient algebra OC_R by the ideal of the compact operators can be characterized by the dynamics near the Denjoy-Wolff point of R if the degree of R is at least two. Moreover we prove that the degree of finite Blaschke products is a complete isomorphism invariant for the class of OC_R such that R is a finite Blaschke product of degree at least two and the Julia set of R is the unit circle, using the …
The authors of the title proved an elegant identity expressing a Toeplitz determinant in terms of the Fredholm determinant of an infinite matrix which (although not described as such) is the product of two Hankel matrices. The proof used combinatorial theory, in particular a theorem of Gessel expressing a Toeplitz determinant as a sum over partitions of products of Schur functions. The purpose of this note is to give two other proofs of the identity. The first uses an identity of the second author for the quotient of Toeplitz determinants in which the same product of Hankel matrices appears an…
We consider operators acting on a Hilbert space that can be written as the sum of a shift and a diagonal operator and determine when the operator is hyponormal. The condition is presented in terms of the norm of an explicit block Jacobi matrix. We apply this result to the Toeplitz operator with specific algebraic symbols acting on certain weighted Bergman spaces of the unit disk and determine when such operators are hyponormal.
