It is well-known that every algebraic group of type F_4 is the automorphism group of an exceptional Jordan algebra, and that up to isogeny all groups of type ^1E_6 with trivial Tits algebras arise as the isometry groups of norm forms of such Jordan algebras. We describe a similar relationship between groups of type E_6 and groups of type E_7 and use it to give explicit descriptions of the homogeneous projective varieties associated to groups of type E_7 with trivial Tits algebras. The underlying algebraic structure for the relationship considered here are a sort of 56-dimensional structurable algebra which are forms of an algebra constructed from an exceptional Jordan algebra.
We introduce a notion of Pre-structurable Algebras based upon triality relations and study its relation to structurable algebra of Allison, as well as to Lie algebras satisfying triality.
We construct Moufang sets, Moufang triangles and Moufang hexagons using inner ideals of Lie algebras obtained from structurable algebras via the Tits--Kantor--Koecher construction. The three different types of structurable algebras we use are, respectively: (1) structurable division algebras, (2) algebras $D \oplus D$ for some alternative division algebra $D$, equipped with the exchange involution, (3) matrix structurable algebras $M(J,1)$ for some cubic Jordan division algebra $J$. In each case, we also determine the root groups directly in terms of the structurable algebra.
We study structurable algebras of skew-dimension one. We present two different equivalent constructions for such algebras: one in terms of non-linear isotopies of cubic norm structures, and one in terms of hermitian cubic norm structures. After this work was essentially finished, we became aware of the fact that both descriptions already occur in (somewhat hidden places in) the literature. Nevertheless, we prove some facts that had not been noticed before: (1) We show that every form of a matrix structurable algebra can be described by our constructions; (2) We give explicit formulas for the n…
The normal symmetric triality algebras (STA's) and the normal Lie related triple algebras (LRTA's) have been recently introduced by the second author, in connection with the principle of triality. It turns out that the unital normal LRTA's are precisely the structurable algebras extensively studied by Allison. It will be shown that the normal STA's (respectively LRTA's) are the algebras that coordinatize those Lie algebras whose automorphism group contains a copy of the alternating (resp. symmetric) group of degree 4.
Left unital Kantor triple systems will be shown to correspond to structurable algebras endowed with an involutive automorphism. A related result is proved for (-1,-1) Freudenthal-Kantor triple systems. Some consequences for the associated 5-graded Lie algebras and superalgebras are deduced too. In particular, left unital (-1,-1) Freudenthal-Kantor triple systems are shown to be intimately related to Lie superalgebras graded over the root system of type B(0,1).
We describe two constructions of a certain $\mathbb{Z}_4^3$-grading on the so-called Brown algebra (a simple structurable algebra of dimension 56 and skew-dimension 1) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic different from 2 and 3. We also show how this grading gives rise to several interesting fine gradings on exceptional simple Lie algebras of types E6, E7 and E8.
The classification of structurable tori with nontrivial involution, which was begun by Allison and Yoshii, is completed. New examples of structurable tori are obtained using a construction of structurable algebras from a semilinear version of cubic forms satisfying the adjoint identity. The classification uses techniques borrowed from quadratic forms over Z_2 and from the geometry of generalized quadrangles. Since structurable tori are the coordinate algebras for the centreless cores of extended affine Lie algebras of type BC_1, the results of this paper provide a classification and new exampl…
Relying on the classification of simple Lie algebras over algebraically closed fields of characteristic $>3$, we show that any finite-dimensional central simple 5-graded Lie algebra over a field $k$ of characteristic $\neq 2,3$ is a simple Lie algebra of Chevalley type, i.e. a central quotient of the Lie algebra of a simple algebraic $k$-group. As a consequence, we prove that all central simple structurable algebras and Kantor pairs over $k$ arise from 5-gradings on simple Lie algebras of Chevalley type.
In 2000, J. Tits and R. Weiss classified all Moufang spherical buildings of rank two, also known as Moufang polygons. The hardest case in the classification consists of the Moufang quadrangles. They fall into different families, each of which can be described by an appropriate algebraic structure. For the exceptional quadrangles, this description is intricate and involves many different maps that are defined ad hoc and lack a proper explanation. In this paper, we relate these algebraic structures to two other classes of algebraic structures that had already been studied before, namely to Freud…
A Moufang set is essentially a doubly transitive permutation group such that each point stabilizer contains a normal subgroup which is regular on the remaining vertices; these regular normal subgroups are called the root groups, and they are assumed to be conjugate and to generate the whole group. It has been known for some time that every Jordan division algebra gives rise to a Moufang set with abelian root groups. We extend this result by showing that every structurable division algebra gives rise to a Moufang set, and conversely, we show that every Moufang set arising from a simple linear a…
The split quartic Cayley algebra is a structurable algebra which has been used to give constructions of Lie algebras of type D4. Here, we calculate its group of automorphisms, its algebra of derivations and its gradings.
The classical Tits construction provides models of the exceptional simple Lie algebras in terms of a unital composition algebra and a degree three simple Jordan algebra. A couple of actions of the symmetric group of degree 4 on this construction are given. By means of these actions, the models provided by the Tits construction are related to models of the exceptional Lie algebras obtained from two different types of structurable algebras. Some models of exceptional Lie superalgebras are discussed too.
We give classifications of group gradings, up to equivalence and up to isomorphism, on the tensor product of a Cayley algebra $\mathcal{C}$ and a Hurwitz algebra over a field of characteristic different from 2. We also prove that the automorphism group schemes of $\mathcal{C}^{\otimes n}$ and $\mathcal{C}^n$ are isomorphic. On the other hand, we prove that the automorphism group schemes of a Smirnov algebra (a $35$-dimensional simple exceptional structurable algebra constructed from a Cayley algebra $\mathcal{C}$) and $\mathcal{C}$ are isomorphic. This is used to obtain classifications, up to …
We prove that the group of automorphisms of the Lie algebra $\Der_K (P_n)$ of derivations of a polynomial algebra $P_n=K[x_1,..., x_n]$ over a field of characteristic zero is canonically isomorphic to the the group of automorphisms of the polynomial algebra $P_n$.
Explicit generators are found for the group of automorphisms of the algebra of one-sided inverses of a polynomial algebra in $n$ variables. An analogue of the polynomial Jacobian homomorphism is found.
Let A be a finite dimensional algebra over an algebraically closed field K. The derived Picard group DPic(A) is the group of two-sided tilting complexes over A modulo isomorphism. We prove that DPic(A) is a locally algebraic group, and its identity component is Out^0(A). If B is a derived Morita equivalent algebra then DPic(A) is isomorphic to DPic(B) as locally algebraic groups. Our results extend, and our based on, work of Huisgen-Zimmermann, Saorin and Rouquier.
In this paper, the complete algebraic structure of finite semisimple group algebra of a normally monomial group is described. The main result is illustrated by computing the explicit Wedderburn decomposition of finite semisimple group algebras of various normally monomial groups. The automorphism groups of these group algebras are also determined.
We study a Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure on the Hochschild cohomology of the group ring of finitely generated abelian groups. The Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure for finite abelian groups comes from the fact that the group ring of finite groups is a symmetric algebra, and the Batalin-Vilkovisky algebra structure for free abelian groups of finite rank comes from the fact that its group ring is a Calabi-Yau algebra.
An algebra is called a GI-algebra if its group of units satisfies a group identity. We provide positive support for the following two open problems. 1. Does every algebraic GI-algebra satisfy a polynomial identity? 2. Is every algebraically generated GI-algebra locally finite?
Albuquerque and Majid have shown how to view Clifford algebras $\cl_{p,q}$ as twisted group rings whereas Chernov has observed that Clifford algebras can be viewed as images of group algebras of certain 2-groups modulo an ideal generated by a nontrivial central idempotent. Ablamowicz and Fauser have introduced a special transposition anti-automorphism of $\cl_{p,q}$, which they called a "transposition", which reduces to reversion in algebras $\cl_{p,0}$ and to conjugation in algebras $\cl_{0,q}$. The purpose of this paper is to bring these concepts together in an attempt to investigate how the…
Let A be an algebra whose group of units U(A) satisfies a Laurent polynomial identity (LPI). We establish conditions on these polynomials in such a way that nil-generated algebras and group algebras with torsion groups over infinite fields in characteristic p > 0 have nonmatrix identities. We also determine, in the determine in the context of group algebras with arbitrary LPI for the group of units, the existence of polynomial identities.
The effect of some properties of twisted groups on the associated algebras, particularly Cayley-Dickson and Clifford algebras. It is conjectured that the Hilbert space of square-summable sequences is a Cayley-Dickson algebra.
In the paper we give a complete classification of $2$-dimensional evolution algebras over algebraically closed fields, describe their groups of automorphisms and derivation algebras.
In this paper, we show that the derived Picard group of a homologically smooth Koszul connected cochain DG algebra is isomorphic to the opposite group of the derived Picard group of its finite dimensional local Ext-algebra. As applications, we compute the derived Picard groups of some important DG algebras such as trivial DG polynomial algebras, trivial DG free algebras and several non-trivial DG down-up algebras and DG free algebras.
In this paper, we determine the derivation algebra and automorphism group of the twisted N=2 superconformal algebra. Then we generalize the relative results to the generalized twisted N=2 superconformal algebra in the final section.
We find a natural compatible condition between the Rota-Baxter operator and Turaev's (Hopf) group-(co)algebras, which leads to the concept of Rota-Baxter Turaev's (Hopf) group-(co)algebra. Two characterizations of Rota-Baxter Turaev's group-algebras (abbr. T-algebras) are obtained: one by Atkinson factorization and the other by T-quasi-idempotent elements. The relations among some related Turaev's group algebraic structures (such as (tri)dendriform T-algebras, Zinbiel T-algebras, pre-Lie T-algebras, Lie T-algebras) are discussed, and some concrete examples from the algebras of dimensions 2,3 a…
We use the discriminant to determine the automorphism groups of some noncommutative algebras, and we prove that a family of noncommutative algebras has tractable automorphism groups.
A twist property is developed which imparts certain properties on the twisted group algebra. These include an involution * satisfying (xy)*=y*x* and an inner product satisfying <xy,z> = <x,zy*> and <xy,z>=<y,x*z>. Examples of twisted group algebras having this property are the Cayley-Dickson algebras and Clifford algebras.
A connected algebraic group in characteristic 0 is uniquely determined by its Lie algebra. In this paper an algorithm is given for constructing an algebraic group in characteristic 0, given its Lie algebra. Using this an algorithm is presented for finding a maximal reductive subgroup and the unipotent radical of an algebraic group.
We construct the universal enveloping algebra of a Hom-Lie algebra and endow it with a Hom-Hopf algebra structure. We discuss group-like elements that we see as a Hom-group integrating the initial Hom-Lie algebra.
We investigate color Lie rings over finite group algebras and their universal enveloping algebras. We exhibit these universal enveloping algebras as PBW deformations of skew group algebras: Every color Lie ring over a finite group algebra with a particular Yetter-Drinfeld structure has universal enveloping algebra that is a quantum Drinfeld orbifold algebra. Conversely, every quantum Drinfeld orbifold algebra of a particular type arising from the action of an abelian group is the universal enveloping algebra of some color Lie ring over the group algebra. One consequence is that these quantum D…
We establish bounds for the representation dimension of skew group algebras and wreath products. Using this, we obtain bounds for the representation dimension of a block of a Hecke algebra of type A, in terms of the weight of the block. This includes certain blocks of group algebras of symmetric groups.
In this paper, we give the definition of the generalized Ramond N=2 superconformal algebras and discuss the derivation algebra and the automorphism group
We study the automorphism group of an idempotent evolution algebra, show that any finite group can be the automorphism group of an evolution algebra, and describe certain evolution algebras with given automorphism groups. In particular, we classify $n$-dimensional idempotent evolution algebras whose automorphism group is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$, and classify idempotent evolution algebras with maximal diagonal automorphism subgroups.
We classify groups G such that the unit group U(ZG) is hypercentral. In the second part we classify groups G whose modular group algebra has hyperbolic unit group V(KG).
Let $KG$ denote the group algebra of the group $G$ over the field $K$ and let $U(KG)$ denote its group of units. Here without the use of a computer we give presentations for the unit groups of all group algebras $KG$, where the size of $KG$ is less than 1024. As a consequence we find the minimum counterexample to the Isomorphism Problem for group algebras.
We provide non-isomorphic finite 2-groups which have isomorphic group algebras over any field of characteristic 2, thus settling the Modular Isomorphism Problem.
The complete algebraic structure of semisimple finite group algebra of a generalized strongly monomial group is provided. This work extends the work of Broche and del R{\'ı}o on strongly monomial groups. The theory is complimented by an algorithm and is illustrated with an example.
In this paper, we introduce a method computing the primitive decomposition of idempotents of any semisimple finite group algebra based on its matrix representations and Wedderburn decomposition. Particularly, we use this method to calculate the examples of the dihedral group algebras $\mathbb{C}[D_{2n}]$ and generalized quaternion group algebras $\mathbb{C}[Q_{4m}]$. Inspired by the orthogonality relations of the character tables of these two families of groups, we obtain two sets of trigonometric identities. Furthermore, a group algebra isomorphism between $\mathbb{C}[D_{8}]$ and $\mathbb{C}[…
We describe those group algebras over fields of characteristic different from 2 whose units symmetric with respect to the classical involution, satisfy some group identity.
We discuss the group of automorphisms of a general MR-algebra. We develop several functors between implication algebras and cubic algebras. These allow us to generalize the notion of inner automorphism. We then show that this group is always isomorphic to the group of inner automorphisms of a filter algebra.
We determine the structure of Hopf algebra extensions of a group algebra by the cyclic group of order 2. We study the corepresentation theory of such Hopf algebras, which provide a generalization, at the Hopf algebra level, of the so called Tambara-Yamagami fusion categories. As a byproduct, we show that every semisimple Hopf algebra of dimension $<36$ is necessarily group-theoretical; thus 36 is the smallest possible dimension where a non group-theoretical example occurs.
