The topic of this paper concerns a certain relation between the jacobians of various quotients of the modular curve $X(p)$, which relates the jacobian of the quotient of $X(p)$ by the normaliser of a non-split Cartan subgroup of $GL_2(F_p)$ to the jacobians of more standard modular curves. In this paper, we confirm a conjecture of Merel found in a paper of Darmon-Merel, "Winding quotients and some variants of Fermat's Last Theorem", Crelle, v. 490, p. 81-100, 1997, which describes this relation in terms of explicit correspondences. The method used is to reduce the conjecture to showing a certain $Z[GL_2(F_p)]$-module homomorphism is an isomorphism. This is accomplished by using some peculiar relations between double coset operators to find a expression for the eigenvalues of this homomorphism in terms of Legendre character sums and Soto-Andrade sums. A ramification argument then shows that these eigenvalues are non-zero.
We construct a Taylor-Wiles system using a family of $p$-adically completed modular Jacobians over suitable Hecke algebras and prove that certain $p$-adically completed Mordell-Weil groups of these Jacobians is free of finite rank over a Hecke algebra.
In this paper, we propose an improved algorithm for computing mod $\ell$ Galois representations associated to eigenforms of arbitrary levels prime to $\ell$. Precisely, we present a method to find the Jacobians of modular curves which have the smallest possible dimensions in a well-defined sense to realize the modular Galois representations. This algorithm also works without the assumption $\ell \ge k-1$, where $k$ are the weights of the eigenforms.
In this paper, we determine all modular Jacobian varieties $J_1(M,MN)$ over the number field $\mathbb{Q}(ζ_M)$ with the Mordell-Weil rank zero following the method of Derickx, Etropolski, van Hoeij, Morrow, and Zureick-Brown.
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}$ of the modular curve $X_0(N)$ of level $N$ with respect to a reduced divisor consisting of all cusps. Supposing $N$ is square free, we explicitly determine the structure of the $\mathbb{Q}$-rational torsion points on $\widetilde{J}$ up to $6$-primary torsion. The result turns out to be very different from the case of prime power level previously studied by Yang and the second author. We also obtain an analogous result for Drinfeld modular curves. Our proof relies on similar results for classical Jacobians due to Ohta, Papikian and the first …
We use a combinatorial result relating the discriminant of the cycle pairing on a weighted finite graph to the eigenvalues of its Laplacian to deduce a formula for the orders of component groups of Jacobians of modular curves arising from quaternion algebras over $\mathbb{F}_q(T)$ or $\mathbb{Q}$. Our formula over $\mathbb{Q}$ recovers a result of Jordan and Livné.
Let $p$ be a prime greater than 3. Consider the modular curve $X_0(3p)$ over $\mathbb{Q}$ and its Jacobian variety $J_0(3p)$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $\mathcal{T}(3p)$ and $\mathcal{C}(3p)$ be the group of rational torsion points on $J_0(3p)$ and the cuspidal group of $J_0(3p)$, respectively. We prove that the $3$-primary subgroups of $\mathcal{T}(3p)$ and $\mathcal{C}(3p)$ coincide unless $p\equiv 1 \pmod 9$ and $3^{\frac{p-1}{3}} \equiv 1 \!\pmod {p}$.
We consider the generalised Jacobian $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}$ of the modular curve $X_{0}(N)$ of level $N$, with respect to the modulus $\mathbf{m}$ consisting of all cusps on the modular curve. When $N$ is odd, we determine the group structure of the rational torsion $J_{0}(N)_{\mathbf{m}}(\mathbb{Q})_{tor}$ up to $2$-primary and $l$-primary parts for any prime $l$ dividing $N$. Our results extend those of Wei--Yamazaki for squarefree levels and Yamazaki--Yang for prime-power levels.
In this paper, we study the torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ over the field generated by those points in the cuspidal group, where $N$ is an odd positive integer. We prove that, considered as Hecke modules, this group and the cuspidal subgroup are both supported at the maximal Eisenstein ideals.
We study the rational torsion subgroup of the modular Jacobian $J_0(N)$ for $N$ a square-free integer. We give a new proof of a result of Ohta on a generalization of Ogg's conjecture: for a prime number $p \nmid 6N$, the $p$-primary part of the rational torsion subgroup equals that of the cuspidal subgroup. Whereas previous proofs of this result used explicit computations of the cardinalities of these groups, we instead use their structure as modules for the Hecke algebra.
For any positive integer $N$, we prove that the rational torsion subgroup of $J_0(N)$ agrees with its rational cuspidal subgroups up to a factor of $6N\prod_{p\mid N}(p^2-1)$. Moreover, for modular Jacobians of the form $J_0(DC)$ with $D$ a positive square-free integer and $C$ any positive divisor of $D$, we prove that the $ψ$-part of the torsion subgroup of $J_0(DC)$ agrees with the $ψ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup up to a factor of $6D\prod_{p\mid D}(p^2-1)$, where $ψ$ is any quadratic character of conductor dividing $C$.
Let $\frak{n}$ be a square-free ideal of $\mathbb{F}_q[T]$. We study the rational torsion subgroup of the Jacobian variety $J_0(\frak{n})$ of the Drinfeld modular curve $X_0(\frak{n})$. We prove that for any prime number $\ell$ not dividing $q(q-1)$, the $\ell$-primary part of this group coincides with that of the cuspidal divisor class group. We further determine the structure of the $\ell$-primary part of the cuspidal divisor class group for any prime $\ell$ not dividing $q-1$.
For a prime number $q\geq 5$ and a positive integer $N$ prime to $q$, Ribet proved the action of the Hecke algebra on the component group of the Jacobian variety of the modular curve of level $Nq$ at $q$ is "Eisenstein", which means the Hecke operator $T_\ell$ acts by $\ell+1$ when $\ell$ is a prime number not dividing the level. In this paper, we completely compute the action of the Hecke algebra on this component group by a careful study of supersingular points with extra automorphisms.
Let $D$ be an odd square-free positive integer and $C$ a divisor of $D$. For any quadratic character $χ$ modulo $C$, we prove that the $χ$-part of the group $J_0(DC)_\text{tor}$ of torsion points of $J_0(DC)$ coincides with the $χ$-part of its cuspidal subgroup, away from those primes of bad reduction or where possible congruences between oldforms and newforms occur.
We consider the generalized Jacobian $\widetilde{J}_0(N)$ of a modular curve $X_0(N)$ with respect to a reduced divisor given by the sum of all cusps on it. When $N$ is a power of a prime $\geq 5$, we exhibit that the group of rational torsion points $\widetilde{J}_0(N)(\mathbb{Q})_{\mathrm{Tor}}$ tends to be much smaller than the classical Jacobian.
In this paper, we provide refined sufficient conditions for the quadratic Chabauty method to produce a finite set of points, with the conditions on the rank of the Jacobian replaced by conditions on the rank of a quotient of the Jacobian plus an associated space of Chow-Heegner points. We then apply this condition to prove the finiteness of this set for any modular curves $X_{\mathrm{ns} }^+ (N)$ and $X_0 ^+ (N)$ of genus at least 2 with N prime. The proof relies on the existence of a quotient of their Jacobians whose Mordell-Weil rank is equal to its dimension (and at least 2), which is prove…
The genus $4$ modular curve $X_{ns}(11)$ attached to a non-split Cartan group of level $11$ admits a model defined over $\mathbb{Q}$. We compute generators for its function field in terms of Siegel modular functions. We also show that its Jacobian is isomorphic over $\mathbb{Q}$ to the new part of the Jacobian of the classical modular curve $X_0(121)$.
In this paper, we will study the arithmetic of the Eisenstein part of the modular Jacobians. In the first section, we introduce some general preliminaries of the arithmetic theory of modular curves that we will need later. In the second section, we give an example of modular abelian varieties due to Gross and study its properties in some details. In the third section, we define Eisenstein quotients of the modular Jacobians in general and give a criterion of the non-triviality of Heegner points on such Eisenstein quotients. The last two sections return to the concrete examples when the level of…
We describe a method to determine all the isomorphism classes of principal polarizations of the modular abelian surfaces $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication attached to a normalized newform $f$ without complex multiplication. We include an example of $A_f$ with quaternionic multiplication for which we find numerically a curve $C$ whose Jacobian is $A_f$ up to numerical approximation, and we prove that it has quaternionic multiplication and is isogenous to $A_f$.
For every point on the Jacobian of the modular curve $X_0(l)$ we define and study certain twisted holomorphic Eisenstein series. These are particular cases of a more general notion of twisted modular forms which correspond to sections on the modular curve $X_1(l)$ of the degree zero twists of line bundles of usual modular forms. We conjecture that a point on the Jacobian is rational if and only if the ratios of these twisted Eisenstein series of the same weights have rational coefficients.
In this paper, we describe the construction of superelliptic curves with a rational point of prescribed order on their jacobians. The construction is based on Hensel's Lemma and produces for a given integer $N$ a superelliptic curve of genus linear in $N$ with a rational $N$-division point on the jacobian. The method is illustrated with multiple examples.
By the Jacquet-Langlands correspondence and Faltings' isogeny theorem, it is known that the abelian variety J_0^{Dpq}(N) (the Jacobian of a Shimura curve of discriminant Dpq with Gamma_0(N) level structure) is isogenous to the pq-new subvariety of J_0^D(pqN), whenever p and q are distinct primes not dividing D or N. However, this approach is entirely nonconstructive, and gives no information at all about any particular isogeny between the two varieties. In this paper, we determine the kernels of all possible maps from one variety to the other up to support on a small finite set of maximal idea…
We present a method for computing the Mordell-Weil rank of the jacobian of a curve of genus 2 with multiplication by a square root of 2, based on descent via isogenies of degree 2, and apply it to a family of curves.
We demonstrate that the 3-power torsion points of the Jacobians of the principal modular curves X(3^n) are fixed by the kernel of the canonical outer Galois representation of the pro-3 fundamental group of the projective line minus three points. The proof proceeds by demonstrating the curves in question satisfy a two-part criterion given by Anderson and Ihara. Two proofs of the second part of the criterion are provided; the first relies on a theorem of Shimura, while the second uses the moduli interpretation.
We study how Tamagawa numbers of Jacobians of hyperelliptic curves vary as one varies the base field or the curve, in the case of semistable reduction. We find that there are strong constraints on the behaviour that appears, some of which are unexpected and specific to hyperelliptic curves. Our methods are explicit and allow one to write down formulae for Tamagawa numbers of infinite families of hyperelliptic curves, of the kind used in proofs of the parity conjecture for Jacobians of curves of small genus.
In general, algorithms for computing the Selmer group of the Jacobian of a curve have relied on either homogeneous spaces or functions on the curve. We present a theoretical analysis of algorithms which use functions on the curve, and show how to exploit special properties of curves to generate new Selmer group computation algorithms. The success of such an algorithm will be based on two criteria that we discuss. To illustrate the types of properties which can be exploited, we develop a $(1-ζ_{p})$-Selmer group computation algorithm for the Jacobian of a curve of the form $y^{p}=f(x)$ where $p…
We give parametrisation of curves C of genus 2 with a maximal isotropic (ZZ/3)^2 in J[3], where J is the Jacobian variety of C, and develop the theory required to perform descent via (3,3)-isogeny. We apply this to several examples, where it can shown that non-reducible Jacobians have nontrivial 3-part of the Tate-Shafarevich group.
We construct examples of families of curves of genus 2 or 3 over Q whose Jacobians split completely and have various large rational torsion subgroups. For example, the rational points on a certain elliptic surface over P^1 of positive rank parameterize a family of genus-2 curves over Q whose Jacobians each have 128 rational torsion points. Also, we find the genus-3 curve 15625(X^4 + Y^4 + Z^4) - 96914(X^2 Y^2 + X^2 Z^2 + Y^2 Z^2) = 0, whose Jacobian has 864 rational torsion points. This paper has appeared in Forum Math. 12 (2000) 315-364.
We prove an abstract modularity result for classes of Heegner divisors in the generalized Jacobian of a modular curve associated to a cuspidal modulus. Extending the Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem, we prove that the generating series of these classes is a weakly holomorphic modular form of weight 3/2. Moreover, we show that any harmonic Maass forms of weight 0 defines a functional on the generalized Jacobian. Combining these results, we obtain a unifying framework and new proofs for the Gross-Kohnen-Zagier theorem and Zagier's modularity of traces of singular moduli, together with new geometric i…
In this paper we construct certain higher Chow cycles in the $K_{1}$ of the Jacobian of Fermat curves, generalising a construction of Collino. We further compute the regulator of these elements in terms of special values of hypergeometric functions. Otsubo has computed the regulator of certain elements of $K_0$ and $K_2$ of Fermat varieties and this paper is along the same lines.
In this paper, we study the algebraic rank and the analytic rank of the Jacobian of hyperelliptic curves $y^2 = x^5 + m^2$ for integers $m$. Namely, we first provide a condition on $m$ that gives a bound of the size of Selmer group and then we provide a condition on $m$ that makes $L$-functions non-vanishing. As a consequence, we construct a Jacobian that satisfies the rank part of the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture.
We show that finite fields over which there is a curve of a given genus g with its Jacobian having a small exponent, are very rare. This extends a recent result of W. Duke in the case g=1. We also show when g=1 or g=2 that our bounds are best possible.
Let $N$ be a non-squarefree positive integer and let $\ell$ be an odd prime such that $\ell^2$ does not divide $N$. Consider the Hecke ring $\mathbb{T}(N)$ of weight $2$ for $Γ_0(N)$, and its rational Eisenstein primes of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ containing $\ell$, defined in Section 3. If $\mathfrak{m}$ is such a rational Eisenstein prime, then we prove that $\mathfrak{m}$ is of the form $(\ell, ~\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N})$, where the ideal $\mathcal{I}^D_{M, N}$ of $\mathbb{T}(N)$ is also defined in Section 3. Furthermore, we prove that $\mathcal{C}(N)[\mathfrak{m}] \neq 0$, where $\mathcal{C}(N)$ is the …
We consider the problem of efficient computation in the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic curve of genus 3 defined over a field whose characteristic is not 2. For curves with a rational Weierstrass point, fast explicit formulas are well known and widely available. Here we address the general case, in which we do not assume the existence of a rational Weierstrass point, using a balanced divisor approach.
The class-invariant homomorphism allows one to measure the Galois module structure of extensions obtained by dividing points on abelian varieties. In this paper, we consider the case when the abelian variety is the Jacobian of a Fermat curve. We give examples of torsion points whose associated Galois structure is trivial, as well as points of infinite order whose associated Galois structure is non-trivial.
We extend the formulae of classical invariant theory for the Jacobian of a genus one curve of degree $n \le 4$ to curves of arbitrary degree. To do this, we associate to each genus one normal curve of degree $n$, an $n \times n$ alternating matrix of quadratic forms in $n$ variables, that represents the invariant differential. We then exhibit the invariants we need as homogeneous polynomials of degrees $4$ and $6$ in the coefficients of the entries of this matrix.
In this paper, we give a universal family of curves of genus 2 whose jacobians have $\sqrt2$ multiplication fixed by the Rosati involution, and several results based on it, including isogenies between jacobians of curves, and jacobians of curves with quaternionic multiplication.
We examine the existence of rational divisors on modular curves of $\mathcal{D}$-elliptic sheaves and on Atkin-Lehner quotients of these curves over local fields. Using a criterion of Poonen and Stoll, we show that in infinitely many cases the Tate-Shafarevich groups of the Jacobians of these Atkin-Lehner quotients have non-square orders.
Let $p$ be an odd prime number. Let $K$ be the $p$-th cyclotomic field and $F$ its maximal real subfield. We give general formulae of the root numbers of the Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves $X^p+Y^p=δ$ where $δ$ is an integer. As an application of these general formulae, we derive the equidistribution of the root numbers for the families of Jacobian varieties of the Fermat curves. When $p\nmid δ$, we bound the Selmer groups of these Jacobian varieties. Moreover, if $p$ is regular and all prime ideals of $K$ dividing $δ$ are inert in $K/F$, the Selmer groups are explicitly determined an…
We construct six infinite series of families of pairs of curves (X,Y) of arbitrarily high genus, defined over number fields, together with an explicit isogeny from the Jacobian of X to the Jacobian of Y splitting multiplication by 2, 3, or 4. For each family, we compute the isomorphism type of the isogeny kernel and the dimension of the image of the family in the appropriate moduli space. The families are derived from Cassou--Noguès and Couveignes' explicit classification of pairs (f,g) of polynomials such that f(x_1) - g(x_2) is reducible.
We propose a conjectural explicit isogeny from the Jacobians of hyperelliptic Drinfeld modular curves to the Jacobians of hyperelliptic modular curves of $\mathcal{D}$-elliptic sheaves. The kernel of the isogeny is a subgroup of the cuspidal divisor group constructed by examining the canonical maps from the cuspidal divisor group into the component groups.
Let $p$ and $q$ be distinct primes. Consider the Shimura curve $\mathcal{X}$ associated to the indefinite quaternion algebra of discriminant $pq$ over $\mathbb{Q}$. Let $J$ be the Jacobian variety of $\mathcal{X}$, which is an abelian variety over $\mathbb{Q}$. For an odd prime $\ell$, we provide sufficient conditions for the non-existence of rational points of order $\ell$ on $J$. As an application, we find some non-trivial subgroups of the kernel of an isogeny from the new quotient of $J_0(pq)$ to $J$.
We describe the use of explicit isogenies to translate instances of the Discrete Logarithm Problem (DLP) from Jacobians of hyperelliptic genus 3 curves to Jacobians of non-hyperelliptic genus 3 curves, where they are vulnerable to faster index calculus attacks. We provide explicit formulae for isogenies with kernel isomorphic to $(\ZZ/2\ZZ)^3$ (over an algebraic closure of the base field) for any hyperelliptic genus 3 curve over a field of characteristic not 2 or 3. These isogenies are rational for a positive fraction of all hyperelliptic genus 3 curves defined over a finite field of character…
We study the inverse Jacobian problem for the case of Picard curves over $\mathbb{C}$. More precisely, we elaborate on an algorithm that, given a small period matrix $Ω\in \mathbb{C}^{3\times 3}$ corresponding to a principally polarized abelian threefold equipped with an automorphism of order $3$, returns a Legendre-Rosenhain equation for a Picard curve with Jacobian isomorphic to the given abelian variety. Our method corrects a formula obtained by Koike-Weng in [Math. Comp., 74(249):499-518, 2005] which is based on a theorem of Siegel. As a result, we apply the algorithm to obtain (numericall…
We consider the issue of when the L-polynomial of one curve over $\F_q$ divides the L-polynomial of another curve. We prove a theorem which shows that divisibility follows from a hypothesis that two curves have the same number of points over infinitely many extensions of a certain type, and one other assumption. We also present an application to a family of curves arising from a conjecture about exponential sums. We make our own conjecture about L-polynomials, and prove that this is equivalent to the exponential sums conjecture.
In 2000, Galbraith and McKee heuristically derived a formula that estimates the probability that a randomly chosen elliptic curve over a fixed finite prime field has a prime number of rational points. We show how their heuristics can be generalized to Jacobians of curves of higher genus. We then elaborate this in genus 2 and study various related issues, such as the probability of cyclicity and the probability of primality of the number of points on the curve itself. Finally, we discuss the asymptotic behavior as the genus tends to infinity.
We prove that there is only a finite number of genus 2 curves C defined over Q such that there exists a nonconstant morphism pi:X_1(N) --->C defined over Q and the jacobian of C, J(C), is a Q-factor of the new part of the jacobian of X_1(N), J_1(N)^{new}. Moreover, we prove that there are only 149 genus two curves of this kind with the additional requeriment that their jacobians are Q-simple. We determine the corresponding newforms and present equations for all these curves.
In this paper we obtain conditions on the divisors of the group order of the Jacobian of a hyperelliptic genus 2 curve, generated by the complex multiplication method described by Weng (2003) and Gaudry (2005). Examples, where these conditions imply that the Jacobian has a large cyclic subgroup, are given.
Let $p$ be a prime, and $q$ a power of $p$. Using Galois theory, we show that over a field $K$ of characteristic zero, the endomorphism algebras of the jacobians of certain superelliptic curves $y^q=f(x)$ are products of cyclotomic fields.
We study the set of isomorphism classes of principal polarizations on abelian varieties of GL2-type. As applications of our results, we construct examples of curves C, C'/\Q of genus two which are nonisomorphic over \bar \Q and share isomorphic unpolarized modular Jacobian varieties over \Q ; we also show a method to obtain genus two curves over \Q whose Jacobian varieties are isomorphic to Weil's restriction of quadratic \Q-curves, and present examples.
We obtain the trace map image of the values of certain harmonic volumes for some quotients of Fermat curves. This provides the algorithm that the algebraic cycles called by the k-th Ceresa cycles are not algebraically equivalent to zero in the Jacobian varieties.
We propose a solution to the hyperelliptic Schottky problem, based on the use of Jacobian Nullwerte and symmetric models for hyperelliptic curves. Both ingredients are interesting on its own, since the first provide period matrices which can be geometrically described, and the second have remarkable arithmetic properties.
