We show that any compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifold with cone angle at most πcan be continuously deformed to a complete hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to the complement of the singularity. This together with the local rigidity by Hodgson and Kerckhoff implies the global rigidity for compact orientable hyperbolic 3-cone-manifolds under the same angle assumption.
For 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone structures with cone angles $θ$, local rigidity is known for $0 \leq θ\leq 2π$, but global rigidity is known only for $0 \leq θ\leq π$. The proof of the global rigidity by Kojima is based on the fact that hyperbolic cone structures with cone angles at most $π$ do not degenerate in deformations decreasing cone angles to zero. In this paper, we give an example of a degeneration of hyperbolic cone structures with decreasing cone angles less than $2π$. These cone structures are constructed on a certain alternating link in the thickened torus by gluing four copies …
Given a geometrically finite hyperbolic cone-manifold, with the cone singularity sufficiently short, we construct a one parameter family of cone-manifolds decreasing the cone angle to zero. We also control the geometry of this one parameter family via the Schwarzian derivative of the projective boundary and the length of closed geodesics.
We develop the deformation theory of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles less than $2π$, i.e. contained in the interval $(0,2π)$. In the present paper we focus on deformations keeping the topological type of the cone-manifold fixed. We prove local rigidity for such structures. This gives a positive answer to a question of A. Casson.
We prove the existence of a minimal diffeomorphism isotopic to the identity between two hyperbolic cone surfaces $(Σ,g_1)$ and $(Σ,g_2)$ when the cone angles of $g_1$ and $g_2$ are different and smaller than $π$. When the cone angles of $g_1$ are strictly smaller than the ones of $g_2$, this minimal diffeomorphism is unique.
We prove global rigidity for compact hyperbolic and spherical cone-3-manifolds with cone-angles $\leq π$ (which are not Seifert fibered in the spherical case), furthermore for a class of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds of finite volume with cone-angles $\leq π$, possibly with boundary consisting of totally geodesic hyperbolic turnovers. To that end we first generalize our local rigidity result to the setting of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds of finite volume as above. We then use the geometric techniques developed by Boileau, Leeb and Porti to deform the cone-manifold structure to a complete non-sing…
The deformation theory of hyperbolic and Euclidean cone-manifolds with all cone angles less then 2π plays an important role in many problems in low dimensional topology and in the geometrization of 3-manifolds. Furthermore, various old conjectures dating back to Stoker about the moduli of convex hyperbolic and Euclidean polyhedra can be reduced to the study of deformations of cone-manifolds by doubling a polyhedron across its faces. This deformation theory has been understood by Hodgson and Kerckhoff when the singular set has no vertices, and by Weiß when the cone angles are less than π. We pr…
We generalize McShane's identity for the length series of simple closed geodesics on a cusped hyperbolic surface to hyperbolic cone-surfaces (with all cone angles $\le π$), possibly with cusps and/or geodesic boundary. In particular, by applying the generalized identity to the orbifolds obtained from taking the quotient of the one-holed torus by its elliptic involution, and the closed genus two surface by its hyper-elliptic involution, we obtain generalizations of the Weierstrass identities for the one-holed torus, and identities for the genus two surface, also obtained by McShane using differ…
In two former papers, the authors independently proved that the space of hyperbolic cone-3-manifolds with cone angles less than 2π and fixed singular locus is locally parametrized by the cone angles. In this sequel, we investigate the local shape of the deformation space when the singular locus is no longer fixed, i.e. when the singular vertices can be split. We show that the different possible splittings correspond to specific pair-of-pants decompositions of the smooth parts of the links of the singular vertices, and that under suitable assumptions the corresponding subspace of deformations i…
We prove that a closed 3-orbifold that fibers over a hyperbolic polygonal 2-orbifold admits a family of hyperbolic cone structures that are viewed as regeneration of the polygon, provided that the perimeter is minimal.
In a recent paper Hodgson and Kerckhoff prove a local rigidity theorem for finite volume, three dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. In this paper we extend this result to geometrically finite cone-manifolds. Our methods also give a new proof of a local version of the classical rigidity theorem for geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
We introduce and study some deformations of complete finite-volume hyperbolic four-manifolds that may be interpreted as four-dimensional analogues of Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn filling. We construct in particular an analytic path of complete, finite-volume cone four-manifolds $M_t$ that interpolates between two hyperbolic four-manifolds $M_0$ and $M_1$ with the same volume $\frac {8}3π^2$. The deformation looks like the familiar hyperbolic Dehn filling paths that occur in dimension three, where the cone angle of a core simple closed geodesic varies monotonically from $0$ to $2π$. Here, the sin…
This paper gives an exposition of the authors' harmonic deformation theory for 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds. We discuss topological applications to hyperbolic Dehn surgery as well as recent applications to Kleinian group theory. A central idea is that local rigidity results (for deformations fixing cone angles) can be turned into effective control on the deformations that do exist. This leads to precise analytic and geometric versions of the idea that hyperbolic structures with short geodesics are close to hyperbolic structures with cusps. The paper also outlines a new harmonic defo…
Let $Σ$ be a hyperbolic link with $m$ components in a 3-dimensional manifold $X$. In this paper, we will show that the moduli space of marked hyperbolic cone structures on the pair $(X, Σ)$ with all cone angle less than $2π/3$ is an $m$-dimensional open cube, parameterized naturally by the $m$ cone angles. As a corollary, we will give a proof of a special case of Thurston's geometrization theorem for orbifolds.
We prove that the deformation space AH(M) of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed compact 3-manifold M with incompressible boundary is locally connected at minimally parabolic points. Moreover, spaces of Kleinian surface groups are locally connected at quasiconformally rigid points. Similar results are obtained for deformation spaces of acylindrical 3-manifolds and Bers slices.
Recently, Hodgson and Kerckhoff found a small bound on Dehn surgered 3-manifolds from hyperbolic knots not admitting hyperbolic structures using deformations of hyperbolic cone-manifolds. They asked whether the area normalized meridian length squared of maximal tubular neighborhoods of the singular locus of the cone-manifold is decreasing and that summed with the cone angle squared is increasing as we deform the cone-angles. We confirm this near 0 cone-angles for an infinite family of hyperbolic cone-manifolds obtained by Dehn surgeries along the Whitehead link complements. The basic method is…
We prove 3-dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifolds are geometrically inflexible: a cone-deformation of a hyperbolic cone-manifold determines a bi-Lipschitz diffeomorphism between initial and terminal manifolds in the deformation in the complement of a standard tubular neighborhood of the cone-locus whose pointwise bi-Lipschitz constant decays exponentially in the distance from the cone-singularity. Estimates at points in the thin part are controlled by similar estimates on the complex lengths of short curves.
We consider the relationship between hyperbolic cone-manifold structures on surfaces, and algebraic representations of the fundamental group into a group of isometries. A hyperbolic cone-manifold structure on a surface, with all interior cone angles being integer multiples of $2π$, determines a holonomy representation of the fundamental group. We ask, conversely, when a representation of the fundamental group is the holonomy of a hyperbolic cone-manifold structure. In this paper we build upon previous work with punctured tori to prove results for higher genus surfaces. Our techniques construct…

We ask, conversely, when a representation of the fundamental group is the holonomy of a hyperbolic cone-manifold structure. We calculate the volumes of the hyperbolic twist knot cone-manifolds using the Schläfli formula. Even though general ideas for calculating the volumes of cone-manifolds are around, since there is no concrete calculation written, we present here the concrete calculations. We express the length of the singular locus in terms of the distance between the two axes fixed by two generators. In this way the calculation becomes easier than using the singular locus directly. The volumes of the hyperbolic twist knot cone-manifolds simpler than Stevedore's knot are known. As an application, we give the vo…
Let M be a complete finite-volume hyperbolic 3-manifold with compact non-empty geodesic boundary and k toric cusps, and let T be a geometric partially truncated triangulation of M. We show that the variety of solutions of consistency equations for T is a smooth manifold or real dimension 2k near the point representing the unique complete structure on M. As a consequence, the relation between deformations of triangulations and deformations of representations is completely understood, at least in a neighbourhood of the complete structure. This allows us to prove, for example, that small deformat…
This is the third in a series of papers constructing hyperbolic structures on all Haken three-manifolds. This portion deals with the mixed case of the deformation space for manifolds with incompressible boundary that are not acylindrical, but are more complicated than interval bundles over surfaces. This is a slight revision of a 1986 preprint, with a few figures added, and slight clarifications of some of the text, but with no attempt to connect this to later developments such as groups acting on R-trees, etc.
Let O be a three-dimensional Nil-orbifold, with branching locus a knot Sigma transverse to the Seifert fibration. We prove that O is the limit of hyperbolic cone manifolds with cone angle in (pi-epsilon, pi). We also study the space of Dehn filling parameters of O-Sigma. Surprisingly it is not diffeomorphic to the deformation space constructed from the variety of representations of O-Sigma. As a corollary of this, we find examples of spherical cone manifolds with singular set a knot that are not locally rigid. Those examples have large cone angles.
This work is devoted to the study of deformations of hyperbolic cone structures under the assumption that the lengths of the singularity remain uniformly bounded over the deformation. Given a sequence $(M_{i}%, p_{i}) $ of pointed hyperbolic cone-manifolds with topological type $(M,Σ) $, where $M$ is a closed, orientable and irreducible 3-manifold and $Σ$ an embedded link in $M$. If the sequence $M_{i}$ collapses and assuming that the lengths of the singularity remain uniformly bounded, we prove that $M$ is either a Seifert fibered or a $Sol$ manifold. We apply this result to a question stated…
Weiss and, independently, Mazzeo and Montcouquiol recently proved that a 3--dimensional hyperbolic cone-manifold (possibly with vertices) with all cone angles less than $2π$ is infinitesimally rigid. On the other hand, Casson provided 1998 an example of an infinitesimally flexible cone-manifold with some of the cone angles larger than $2π$. In this paper several new examples of infinitesimally flexible cone-manifolds are constructed. The basic idea is that the double of an infinitesimally flexible polyhedron is an infinitesimally flexible cone-manifold. With some additional effort, we are able…
We study the geometry of hyperbolic cone surfaces, possibly with cusps or geodesic boundaries. We prove that any hyperbolic cone structure on a surface of non-exceptional type is determined up to isotopy by the geodesic lengths of a finite specific homotopy classes of non-peripheral simple closed curves. As an application, we show that the Thurston asymmetric metric is well-defined on the Teichmüller space of hyperbolic cone surfaces with fixed cone angles and boundary lengths. We compare such a Teichmüller space with the Teichmüller space of complete hyperbolic surfaces with punctures, by sho…
The space of marked n distinct points on the complex projective line up to projective transformations will be called a configuration space in this paper. There are two families of complex hyperbolic structures on the configuration space constructed by Deligne-Mostow and Thurston. We first confirm that these families are the same. Then in view of the deformation theory for real hyperbolic cone 3-manifolds, we review the families for small n.
We study the space $C(a_0,a_1,\dots,a_n)$ of hyperbolic 2-spheres with cone points of prescribed apex curvatures $2a_0,2a_1,\dots,2a_n\in]0,2π[$ and some related spaces. For $n=3$, we get a detailed description of such spaces. The euclidean 2-spheres were considered by W. P. Thurston: for $n=4$, the corresponding spaces provide the famous 7 examples of nonarithmetic compact holomorphic 2-ball quotients previously constructed by Deligne-Mostow.
In this note, we study deformations of a non-uniform real hyperbolic lattice in quaternionic hyperbolic spaces. Specially we show that the representations of the fundamental group of the figure eight knot complement into PU(2,1) cannot be deformed in $PSp(2,1)$ out of PU(2,1) up to conjugacy.
A generic geodesic on a finite area, hyperbolic 2-orbifold exhibits an infinite sequence of penetrations into a neighborhood of a cone singularity, so that the sequence of depths of maximal penetration has a limiting distribution. The distribution function is the same for all such surfaces and is described by a fairly simple formula.
This work is devoted to the study of deformations of hyperbolic cone structures under the assumption that the lengths of the singularity remain uniformly bounded over the deformation. Given a sequence (M_{i},p_{i}) of pointed hyperbolic cone-manifolds with topological type (M,Σ), where M is a closed, orientable and irreducible 3-manifold and Σ an embedded link in M. Assuming that the lengths of the singularity remain uniformly bounded, we prove that either the sequence M_{i} collapses and M is Seifert fibered or a Sol manifold, or the sequence M_{i} does not collapse and in this case a subsequ…
We develop and study quaternionic and octonionic analogies of Cartan angular and Toledo invariants that are well known in the complex hyperbolic space. Using such invariants we study quasifuchsian deformations (including bendings) of quaternionic and octonionic hyperbolic manifolds.
A negatively curved hyperbolic cone metric is called rigid if it is determined (up to isotopy) by the support of its Liouville current, and flexible otherwise. We provide a complete characterization of rigidity and flexibility, prove that rigidity is a generic property, and parameterize the associated deformation space for any flexible metric. As an application, we parameterize the space of hyperbolic polygons with the same symbolic coding for their billiard dynamics, and prove that generically this parameter space is a point.
We prove that the deformation space $AH(M)$ of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed compact 3-manifold $M$ with incompressible boundary is locally connected at quasiconformally rigid points.
By using Klein's model for hyperbolic geometry, hyperbolic structures on orbifolds or manifolds provide examples of real projective structures. By Andreev's theorem, many 3-dimensional reflection orbifolds admit a finite volume hyperbolic structure, and such a hyperbolic structure is unique. However, the induced real projective structure on some such 3-orbifolds deforms into a family of real projective structures that are not induced from hyperbolic structures. In this paper, we find new classes of compact and complete hyperbolic reflection 3-orbifolds with such deformations. We also explain n…
We prove the Volume Conjecture for the relative Reshetikhin-Turaev invariants proposed in [29] for all pairs (M,K) such that M\K is homeomorphic to the complement of the figure-8 knot in S^3 with almost all possible cone angles.
Let $S$ be a torus with a hyperbolic metric admitting one puncture or cone singularity. We describe which infinitesimal deformations of $S$ lengthen (or shrink) all closed geodesics. We also study how the answer degenerates when $S$ becomes Euclidean, i.e. very small.
In this note, we study deformations of discrete and Zariski dense subgroups of SU(2, 1) in quaternionic hyperbolic space. Specifi- cally we consider two examples coming from representations of 3-manifold groups (the figure eight knot and Whitehead links complement) and show opposite behavior: one is not deformable outside U(2,1), while the other has a big space of deformations in Sp(2, 1).
In his paper "Shapes of Polyhedra and Triangulations of the Sphere", Thurston found that the set of shapes of convex polyhedra with prescribed cone-deficits has a complex hyperbolic structure. Inspired by his work, this paper studies the set of shapes of centrally symmetric octahedra with prescribed cone-deficits. We show that this set forms a real hyperbolic ideal tetrahedron, whose dihedral angles are half of the prescribed cone-deficits.
Let $N$ be a hyperbolic 3-manifold and $B$ a component of the interior of $AH(π_1(N))$, the space of marked hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to $N$. We will give topological conditions on $N$ sufficient to give $ρ\in \bar{B}$ such that for every small neighborhood $V$ of $ρ$, $V \cap B$ is disconnected. This implies that $\bar{B}$ is not manifold with boundary.
We give an expository account of our proof that each cusp-free hyperbolic 3-manifold M with finitely generated fundamental group and incompressible ends is an algebraic limit of geometrically finite hyperbolic 3-manifolds.
This paper is a continuation of the previous paper of the author[M]. We show that an affine deformation space of a hyperbolic surface of type (g,b) can be parametrized by Margulis invariants and affine twist parameters with a certain decomposition of the surface, which are associated with the Fenchel-Nielsen coordinates in Teichmuller theory. W.Goldman and G.Margulis[GM] introduced that a translation part of an affine deformation canonically corresponds to a tangent vector on the Teichmuller space. By this correspondence, we explicitly represent tangent vectors on the Teichmuller space from th…
Two single parameter families of polyhedra $P(ψ)$ are constructed in three dimensional spaces of constant curvature $C(ψ)$. Identification of the faces of the polyhedra via isometries results in cone manifolds $M(ψ)$ which are topologically $S^1\timesS^2$, $S^3$ or singular $S^2$. The singular set of $M(ψ)$ can have self intersections for some values of $ψ$ and can also be the Whitehead link or form other configurations. Curvature varies continuously with $ψ$. At $ψ=0$ spontaneous surgery occurs and the topological type of $M(ψ)$ changes. This phenomenon is described.
Let $C(2n, 3)$ be the family of two bridge knots of slope $(4n+1)/(6n+1)$. We calculate the volumes of the $C(2n, 3)$ cone-manifolds using the Schläfli formula. We present the concrete and explicit formula of them. We apply the general instructions of Hilden, Lozano, and Montesinos-Amilibia and extend the Ham, Mednykh, and Petrov's methods. As an application, we give the volumes of the cyclic coverings over those knots. For the fundamental group of $C( 2n, 3)$, we take and tailor Hoste and Shanahan's. As a byproduct, we give an affirmative answer for their question whether their presentation i…
Let $X$ be a negatively curved symmetric space and $Γ$ a non-cocompact lattice in $\rm{Isom}(X)$. We show that small, parabolic-preserving deformations of $Γ$ into the isometry group of any negatively curved symmetric space containing $X$ remain discrete and faithful (the cocompact case is due to Guichard). This applies in particular to a version of Johnson-Millson bending deformations, providing for all $n$ infnitely many non-cocompact lattices in ${\rm SO}(n,1)$ which admit discrete and faithful deformations into ${\rm SU}(n,1)$. We also produce deformations of the figure-8 knot group into $…
We survey work on the topology of the space AH(M) of all (marked) hyperbolic 3-manifolds homotopy equivalent to a fixed compact 3-manifold M with boundary. The interior of AH(M) is quite well-understood, but the topology of the entire space can be quite complicated. However, the topology is well-behaved at many points in the boundary of AH(M).
A horospherical torus about a cusp of a hyperbolic manifold inherits a Euclidean similarity structure, called a cusp shape. We bound the change in cusp shape when the hyperbolic structure of the manifold is deformed via cone deformation preserving the cusp. The bounds are in terms of the change in structure in a neighborhood of the singular locus alone. We then apply this result to provide information on the cusp shape of many hyperbolic knots, given only a diagram of the knot. Specifically, we show there is a universal constant C such that if a knot admits a prime, twist reduced diagram with …
Let $Γ$ be a nonuniform lattice acting on real hyperbolic n-space. We show that in dimension greater than or equal to 4, the volume of a representation is constant on each connected component of the representation variety of $Γ$ in SO(n,1). Furthermore, in dimensions 2 and 3, there is a semialgebraic subset of the representation variety such that the volume of a representation is constant on connected components of the semialgebraic subset. Our approach gives a new proof of the local rigidity theorem for nonuniform hyperbolic lattices and the analogue of Soma's theorem, which shows that the nu…
A Coxeter $n$-orbifold is an $n$-dimensional orbifold based on a polytope with silvered boundary facets. Each pair of adjacent facets meet on a ridge of some order $m$, whose neighborhood is locally modeled on ${\mathbb R}^n$ modulo the dihedral group of order $2m$ generated by two reflections. For $n \geq 3$, we study the deformation space of real projective structures on a compact Coxeter $n$-orbifold $Q$ admitting a hyperbolic structure. Let $e_+(Q)$ be the number of ridges of order $\geq 3$. A neighborhood of the hyperbolic structure in the deformation space is a cell of dimension $e_+(Q) …
We investigate 3-dimensional globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds containing "particles", i.e., cone singularities of angles less than $2π$ along a time-like graph $Γ$. To each such space we associate a graph and a finite family of pairs of hyperbolic surfaces with cone singularities. We show that this data is sufficient to recover the space locally (i.e., in the neighborhood of a fixed metric). This is a partial extension of a result of Mess for non-singular globally hyperbolic AdS manifolds.
Tree-graded spaces are generalizations of R-trees. They appear as asymptotic cones of groups (when the cones have cut points). Since many questions about endomorphisms and automorphisms of groups, solving equations over groups, studying embeddings of a group into another group, etc. lead to actions of groups on the asymptotic cones, it is natural to consider actions of groups on tree-graded spaces. We develop a theory of such actions which generalizes the well known theory of groups acting on R-trees. As applications of our theory, we describe, in particular, relatively hyperbolic groups with …
Let $ M$ be a cusped hyperbolic $ 3$-manifold, e.g. a knot complement. Thurston showed that the space of deformations of its fundamental group in $ \mathrm {PGL}(2,\mathbf {C})$ (up to conjugation) is of complex dimension the number $ ν$ of cusps near the hyperbolic representation. It seems natural to ask whether some representations remain discrete after deformation. The answer is generically not. A simple reason for it lies inside the cusps: the degeneracy of the peripheral representation (i.e. representations of fundamental groups of the $ ν$ peripheral tori). They indeed generically become…
This is the first in a series of papers showing that Haken manifolds have hyperbolic structures; this first was published, the second two have existed only in preprint form, and later preprints were never completed. This eprint is only an approximation to the published version, which is the definitive form for part I, and is provided for convenience only. All references and quotations should be taken from the published version, since the theorem numbering is different and not all corrections have been incorporated into the present version. Parts II and III will be made available as eprints sho…
