We study the Yamabe invariant of manifolds obtained as connected sums along submanifolds of codimension greater than 2. In particular, given a compact smooth manifold M which does not admit metrics of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant of M is an upper bound for the Yamabe invariant of any manifold obtained by performing surgery in M on spheres of codimension greater than 2 .
We consider the equivariant Yamabe problem, i.e. the Yamabe problem on the space of G-invariant metrics for a compact Lie group G. The G-Yamabe invariant is analogously defined as the supremum of the constant scalar curvatures of unit volume G-invariant metrics minimizing the total scalar curvature functional in their G-invariant conformal subclasses. We prove a formula about how the G-Yamabe invariant changes under the surgery of codimension 3 or more, and compute some G-Yamabe invariants.
We prove a surgery formula for the smooth Yamabe invariant $σ(M)$ of a compact manifold $M$. Assume that $N$ is obtained from $M$ by surgery of codimension at least 3. We prove the existence of a positive number $Λ_n$, depending only on the dimension $n$ of $M$, such that $$ σ(N) \geq \min{σ(M),Λ_n}. $$
By using the gluing formula of the Seiberg-Witten invariant, we compute the Yamabe invariant Y(X) of 4-manifolds X obtained by performing surgeries along points, circles or tori on compact Kaehler surfaces. For instance, if M is a compact Kaehler surface of nonnegative Kodaira dimension, and N is a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold with b_2^+(N)=0 and Y(N)>= 0, then we show that Y(M # N)=Y(M).
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$. For a metric $g$ on $M$, we let $\la_2(g)$ be the second eigenvalue of the Yamabe operator $L_g:= \frac{4(n-1)}{n-2} Δ_g + \scal_g$. Then, the second Yamabe invariant is defined as $$ \si_2(M) \definedas \sup \inf_{h \in [g]} \la_2(h) \Vol(M,h)^{2/n}. $$ where the supremum is taken over all metrics $g$ and the infimum is taken over the metrics in the conformal class $[g]$. Assume that $\si_2(M)>0$. In the spirit of \cite{ammann.dahl.humbert:08}, we prove that if $N$ is obtained from $M$ by a $k$-dimensional surgery ($0 \leq k…
Assume that M is a compact n-dimensional manifold and that N is obtained by surgery along a k-dimensional sphere, k\le n-3. The smooth Yamabe invariants σ(M) and σ(N) satisfy σ(N)\ge min (σ(M),Λ) for Λ>0. We derive explicit lower bounds for Λin dimensions where previous methods failed, namely for (n,k)\in {(4,1),(5,1),(5,2),(6,3),(9,1),(10,1)}. With methods from surgery theory and bordism theory several gap phenomena for smooth Yamabe invariants can be deduced.
For a compact connected manifold M of dimension n greater than 3 and with no metric of positive scalar curvature, we prove that the Yamabe invariant is unchanged under surgery on spheres of dimension different from 1, n-2 and n-1. We use this result to give new computations of the invariant in dimension four and display new examples of 4-manifolds which do not admit Einstein metrics.
For an asymptotically Poincare-Einstein manifold with a lower Ricci curvature bound, we establish a sharp inequality relating the type II Yamabe invariant of the interior and the Yamabe invariant of its conformal infinity
We show that the S^1-equivariant Yamabe invariant of the 3-sphere, endowed with the Hopf action, is equal to the (non-equivariant) Yamabe invariant of the 3-sphere. More generally, we establish a topological upper bound for the S^1-equivariant Yamabe invariant of any closed oriented 3-manifold endowed with an S^1-action. Furthermore, we prove a convergence result for the equivariant Yamabe constants of an accumulating sequence of subgroups of a compact Lie group acting on a closed manifold.
In this paper we define the bi-orthogonal sectional curvature and we present two modified Yamabe invariants for compact 4-dimensional manifolds. In particular we obtained a relationship between one of these invariants and a Hopf conjecture.
Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Riemannian manifold of dimension $n \geq 3$. We define the second Yamabe invariant as the infimum of the second eigenvalue of the Yamabe operator over the metrics conformal to $g$ and of volume 1. We study when it is attained. As an application, we find nodal solutions of the Yamabe equation.
In this note we prove the existence of infinitely many positive conformal classes on $S^7$ which cannot be the conformal infinity of a Poincaré-Einstein metric on the ball $B^8$. We also prove a sharp inequality between the Yamabe invariant of the conformal infinity and the Yamabe invariant of the interior (after a suitable compactification).
For a Poincare-Einstein manifold under certain restrictions, X. Chen, M. Lai and F. Wang proved a sharp inequality relating Yamabe invariants. We show that the inequality is true without any restriction.
We propose a global invariant $σ_c$ for contact manifolds which admit a strictly pseudoconvex CR structure, analogous to the Yamabe invariant $σ$. We prove that this invariant is non-decreasing under handle attaching and under connected sum. We then give a lower bound on $σ_c$ in a particular case.
For a Riemannian manifold with dimension at least six, we prove that the existence of a conformal metric with positive scalar and Q curvature is equivalent to the positivity of both the Yamabe invariant and the Paneitz operator.
The purpose of this paper is to study gradient $k$-Yamabe solitons conformal to pseudo-Euclidean space. We characterize all such solitons invariant under the action of an $(n-1)$-dimensional translation group. For rotational invariant solutions, we provide the classification of solitons with null curvatures. As an application, we construct infinitely many explicit examples of geodesically complete steady gradient $k$-Yamabe solitons conformal to the Lorentzian space.
An orbifold version of the Hitchin-Thorpe inequality is used to prove that certain weighted projective spaces do not admit orbifold Einstein metrics. Also, several estimates for the orbifold Yamabe invariants of weighted projective spaces are proved.
We prove that the Yamabe invariant of any simply connected smooth manifold of dimension n greater than four is non-negative. Equivalently that the infimum of the L^{n/2} norm of the scalar curvature, over the space of all Riemannian metrics on the manifold, is zero.
Shortly after the introduction of Seiberg-Witten theory, LeBrun showed that the sign of the Yamabe invariant of a compact Kähler surface is determined by its Kodaira dimension. In this paper, we show that LeBrun's Theorem is no longer true for non-Kähler surfaces. In particular, we show that the Yamabe invariants of Inoue surfaces and their blowups are all zero. We also take this opportunity to record a proof that the Yamabe invariants of Kodaira surfaces and their blowups are all zero, as previously indicated by LeBrun.
In the work of Ammann, Dahl and Humbert it has turned out that the Yamabe invariant on closed manifolds is a bordism invariant below a certain threshold constant. A similar result holds for a spinorial analogon. These threshold constants are characterized through Yamabe-type equations on products of spheres with rescaled hyperbolic spaces. We give variational characterizations of these threshold constants, and our investigations lead to an explicit positive lower bound for the spinorial threshold constants.
We give a characterization of conformal classes realizing a compact manifold's Yamabe invariant. This characterization is the analogue of an observation of Nadirashvili for metrics realizing the maximal first eigenvalue, and of Fraser and Schoen for metrics realizing the maximal first Steklov eigenvalue.
The Yamabe invariant is an invariant of a closed smooth manifold, which contains information about possible scalar curvature on it. It is well-known that a product manifold T^m\times B where T^m$ is the m-dimensional torus, and B is a closed spin manifold of nonzero \hat{A}-genus has zero Yamabe invariant. We generalize it to various T-structured manifolds, for example T^m-bundles over such B whose transition functions take values in Sp(m,Z) (or Sp(m-1,Z)\oplus \pm 1 for odd m).
We consider the non-trivial Ricci soliton on $\mathbb{CP}^2\#\overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$ constructed by Koiso and Cao. It is a Kähler metric invariant by the $U(2)$ action on $\mathbb{CP}^2\#\overline{\mathbb{CP}^2}$. We study its Yamabe equation and prove it has exactly one $U(2)-$invariant solution up to homothecies.
We compute the Yamabe invariants for a new infinite class of closed $4$-dimensional manifolds by using a "twisted" version of the Seiberg-Witten equations, the $\mathrm{Pin}^-(2)$-monopole equations. The same technique also provides a new obstruction to the existence of Einstein metrics or long-time solutions of the normalised Ricci flow with uniformly bounded scalar curvature.
We express two CR invariant surface area elements in terms of quantities in pseudohermitian geometry. We deduce the Euler-Lagrange equations of the associated energy functionals. Many solutions are given and discussed. In relation to the singular CR Yamabe problem, we show that one of the energy functionals appears as the coefficient (up to a constant multiple) of the log term in the associated volume renormalization.
Let $M$ be a smooth closed $4k$-manifold whose Yamabe invariant $Y(M)$ is nonpositive. We show that $$Y(M\sharp l \Bbb HP^k\sharp m \bar{\Bbb HP^k})=Y(M),$$ where $l,m$ are nonnegative integers, and $\Bbb HP^k$ is the quaternionic projective space. When $k=4$, we also have $$Y(M\sharp l CaP^2\sharp m \bar{CaP^2})=Y(M),$$ where $CaP^2$ is the Cayley plane.
Let (M,g) be a compact manifold of dimension n greater or equals to 3. We suppose that g is a given metric in a precised Sobolev space and there is a point P in M and d>o such that g is smooth on the ball B(P,d). We define the second Yamabe invariant with singularities a the minimum of the second eigenvalue of the singular Yamabe operator over a generalized class of conformal metrics to g and of volume 1. We show that this operator is attained by a generalized metric, we deduce nodal solutions to a Yamabe type equation with singularities.
We show that solutions of the Yamabe equation on certain n-dimensional non-compact Riemannian manifolds which are bounded and L^p for p=2n/(n-2) are also L^2. This L^p-L^2-implication provides explicit constants in the surgery-monotonicity formula for the smooth Yamabe invariant in a previous article of the authors. As an application we see that the smooth Yamabe invariant of any 2-connected compact 7-dimensional manifold is at least 74.5. Similar conclusions follow in dimension 8 and in dimensions at least 11.
On a smooth closed oriented 4-manifold $M$ with a smooth action by a finite group $G$, we show that a $G$-monopole class gives the $L^2$-estimate of the Ricci curvature of a $G$-invariant Riemannian metric, and derive a topological obstruction to the existence of a $G$-invariant nonsingular solution to the normalized Ricci flow on $M$. In particular, for certain $m$ and $n$, $m\Bbb CP_2 # n\bar{\Bbb CP}_2$ admits an infinite family of topologically equivalent but smoothly distinct non-free actions of $\Bbb Z_d$ such that it admits no nonsingular solution to the normalized Ricci flow for any in…
We prove the existence of a solution of the Yamabe equation on complete manifolds with finite volume and positive Yamabe invariant. In order to circumvent the standard methods on closed manifolds which heavily rely on global (compact) Sobolev embeddings we approximate the solution by eigenfunctions of certain conformal complete metrics. This also gives rise to a new proof of the well-known result for closed manifolds and positive Yamabe invariant.
We study a particular class of open manifolds. In the category of Riemannian manifolds these are complete manifolds with cylindrical ends. We give a natural setting for the conformal geometry on such manifolds including an appropriate notion of the cylindrical Yamabe constant/invariant. This leads to a corresponding version of the Yamabe problem on cylindrical manifolds. We affirmatively solve this Yamabe problem: we prove the existence of minimizing metrics and analyze their singularities near infinity. These singularities turn out to be of very particular type: either almost conical or almos…
We consider Yamabe-type equations on Projective Spaces $\mathbb{C} {\bf P}^n$ and $\mathbb{H} {\bf P}^n$ with the respectives canonical metrics, and study the existence and multiplicity of solutions of Yamabe-type equation, which are invariant by cohomogeneity one actions of $ U(n)$ and $Sp(n)$ respectively. We also prove the existence of degenerate solutions of the Yamabe-type equationn on $\mathbb{C} {\bf P}^n$ and $\mathbb{H} {\bf P}^n$, which are invariant by cohomogeneity one actions of $ U(n)$ and $Sp(n)$ respectively.
An octonionic contact (OC) manifold is always spherical. We construct the OC Yamabe operator on an OC manifold and prove its transformation formula under conformal OC transformations. An OC manifold is scalar positive, negative or vanishing if and only if its OC Yamabe invariant is positive, negative or zero, respectively. On a scalar positive OC manifold, we can construct the Green function of the OC Yamabe operator, and apply it to construct a conformally invariant tensor. It becomes an OC metric if the OC positive mass conjecture is true. We also show the connected sum of two scalar positiv…
We associate to a compact spin manifold M a real-valued invariant τ(M) by taking the supremum over all conformal classes over the infimum inside each conformal class of the first positive Dirac eigenvalue, normalized to volume 1. This invariant is a spinorial analogue of Schoen's $σ$-constant, also known as the smooth Yamabe number. We prove that if N is obtained from M by surgery of codimension at least 2, then $τ(N) \geq \min\{τ(M),Λ_n\}$ with $Λ_n>0$. Various topological conclusions can be drawn, in particular that τis a spin-bordism invariant below $Λ_n$. Below $Λ_n$, the values of $τ$ can…
In this short note, exploits of constructions of $\mathcal{F}$-structures coupled with technology developed by Cheeger-Gromov and Paternain-Petean are seen to yield a procedure to compute minimal entropy, minimal volume, Yamabe invariant and to study collapsing with bounded sectional curvature on inequivalent smooth structures and inequivalent PL-structures within a fixed homeomorphism class. We compute these fundamental Riemannian invariants for every high-dimensional smooth manifold on the homeomorphism class of any smooth manifold that admits a Riemannian metric of zero sectional curvature.…
We compute the Yamabe invariant for a class of symplectic 4-manifolds of general type obtained by taking the rational blowdown of Kahler surfaces. In particular, for any point on the half-Noether line we exhibit a simply connected minimal symplectic manifold for which we compute the Yamabe invariant.
For a closed Riemannian manifold of dimension $n\geq 3$ and a subgroup $G$ of the isometry group, we define and study the $G-$equivariant second Yamabe constant and we obtain some results on the existence of $G-$invariant nodal solutions of the Yamabe equation.
In his study of Ricci flow, Perelman introduced a smooth-manifold invariant called lambda-bar. We show here that, for completely elementary reasons, this invariant simply equals the Yamabe invariant, alias the sigma constant, whenever the latter is non-positive. On the other hand, the Perelman invariant just equals + infinity whenever the Yamabe invariant is positive.
We generalize Kobayashi's connected-sum inequality to the $λ$-Yamabe invariants. As an application, we calculate the $λ$-Yamabe invariants of $\#m_1\mathbb{RP}^n\# m_2(\mathbb{RP}^{n-1}\times S^1)\#lH^n\#kS_+^n$, for any $λ\in [0,1]$, $n\geq 3$, provided $k+l\geq 1$. As a corollary, we prove that $\mathbb{RP}^n$ minus finitely many disjoint $n$-balls have the same $λ$-Yamabe invariants as the hemi-sphere, which forms an interesting contrast with the famous Bray-Neves results on the Yamabe invariants of $\mathbb{RP}^3$.
Let $(M^m,g)$ be a closed Riemannian manifold $(m\geq 2)$ of positive scalar curvature and $(N^n,h)$ any closed manifold. We study the asymptotic behaviour of the second Yamabe constant and the second $N-$Yamabe constant of $(M\times N,g+th)$ as $t$ goes to $+\infty$. We obtain that $\lim_{t \to +\infty}Y^2(M\times N,[g+th])=2^{\frac{2}{m+n}}Y(M\times \re^n, [g+g_e]).$ If $n\geq 2$, we show the existence of nodal solutions of the Yamabe equation on $(M\times N,g+th)$ (provided $t$ large enough). When the scalar curvature of $(M,g)$ is constant, we prove that $\lim_{t \to +\infty}Y^2_N(M\times …
In this paper, we study the CR Yamabe flow with zero CR Yamabe invariant. We use the CR Poincaré inequality and a Gagliardo-Nirenberg type interpolation inequality to show that this flow has long time solution and the solution converges to a contact form with flat pseudo-Hermitian scalar curvature exponentially.
We consider the Yamabe invariant of a compact orbifold with finitely many singular points. We prove a fundamental inequality for the estimate of the invariant from above, which also includes a criterion for the non-positivity of it. Moreover, we give a sufficient condition for the equality in the inequality. In order to prove it, we also solve the orbifold Yamabe problem under a certain condition. We use these results to give some exact computations of the Yamabe invariant of compact orbifolds.
The Yamabe problem concerns finding a conformal metric on a given closed Riemannian manifold so that it has constant scalar curvature. This paper concerns mainly a fully nonlinear version of the Yamabe problem and the corresponding Liouville type problem.
We define a relative Yamabe invariant of a smooth manifold with given conformal class on its boundary. In the case of empty boundary the invariant coincides with the classic Yamabe invariant. We develop approximation technique which leads to gluing theorems of two manifolds along their boundaries for the relative Yamabe invariant. We show that there are many examples of manifolds with both positive and non-positive relative Yamabe invariants.
The Yamabe Invariant of a smooth compact manifold is by definition the supremum of the scalar curvatures of unit-volume Yamabe metrics on the manifold. For an explicit infinite class of 4-manifolds, we show that this invariant is positive but strictly less than that of the 4-sphere. This is done by using spin^c Dirac operators to control the lowest eigenvalue of a perturbation of the Yamabe Laplacian. These results dovetail perfectly with those derived from the perturbed Seiberg-Witten equations, but the present method is much more elementary in spirit.
It is shown that on every closed oriented Riemannian 4-manifold $(M,g)$ with positive scalar curvature, $$\int_M|W^+_g|^2dμ_{g}\geq 2π^2(2χ(M)+3τ(M))-\frac{8π^2}{|π_1(M)|},$$ where $W^+_g$, $χ(M)$ and $τ(M)$ respectively denote the self-dual Weyl tensor of $g$, the Euler characteristic and the signature of $M$. This generalizes Gursky's inequality \cite{gur} for the case of $b_1(M)>0$ in a much simpler way. We also extend all such lower bounds of the Weyl functional to 4-orbifolds including Gursky's inequalities for the case of $b_2^+(M)>0$ or $δ_gW^+_g=0$, and obtain topological obstructions …
Given closed Riemannian manifold $(M^n, g)$ of positive Ricci curvature $Ricci(g) \geq (n-1)g$ we study isoperimetric regions on the spherical cone over $M$. When $g$ is Einstein we use this to compute the Yamabe constant of $(M \times {\bf R}, g + dt^2)$ and so to obtain lower bounds for the Yamabe invariant of $M\times S^1$.
We refine Theorem A due to Gursky \cite{G3}. As applications, we give some rigidity theorems on four-manifolds with postive Yamabe constant. In particular, these rigidity theorems are sharp for our conditions have the additional properties of being sharp. By this we mean that we can precisely characterize the case of equality. We prove some classification theorems of four manifolds according to some conformal invariants (see Theorems 1.3 and 1.6), which generalize the conformally invariant sphere theorem of Chang-Gursky-Yang \cite{CGY}.
For a closed Riemannian manifold $(M^m,g)$ of constant positive scalar curvature and any other closed Riemannian manifold $(N^n,h)$, we show that the limit of the Yamabe constants of the Riemannian products $(M\times N,g+rh)$ as $r$ goes to infinity is equal to the Yamabe constant of $(M^m \times R^n, [g+g_E])$ and is strictly less than the Yamabe invariant of $S^{m+n}$ provided $n\geq 2$. We then consider the minimum of the Yamabe functional restricted to functions of the second variable and we compute the limit in terms of the best constants of the Gagliardo-Nirenberg inequalities.
In this note we prove an existence result for the Einstein conformal constraint equations for metrics with vanishing Yamabe invariant assuming that the TT-tensor is small in $L^2$.
We apply scattering theory on asymptotically hyperbolic manifolds to singular Yamabe metrics, applying the results to the study of the conformal geometry of compact manifolds with boundary. In particular, we define extrinsic versions of the conformally invariant powers of the Laplacian, or GJMS operators, on the boundary of any such manifold, along with associated extrinsic Q-curvatures. We use the existence and uniqueness of a singular Yamabe metric to define also nonlocal extrinsic fractional GJMS operators on the boundary, and draw other global conclusions about the scattering operator, inc…
