An algebraic variety X is embedded to the order k via a line bundle L if the global sections of L generate all (simultaneous) jets of order k on X or if they separate all zero-dimensional subschemes of length at most k+1. Even though we refer to both situations as "higher order embeddings", the first notion (in which case L is said to be k-jet ample) is stronger than the second one (when L is k-very ample).
The purpose of this paper is to study higher order embeddings of cyclic coverings π:Y\to X via line bundles given by pulling back "sufficiently positive" line bundles on X. Given a line bundle L on X, we relate the order of the embedding defined by π^*L to that of L and of certain rank 1 summands of the vector bundle L\tensorπ_*\calo_Y. As expected, the sufficient conditions for π^*L to be k-jet ample are stronger then the ones needed in order for π^*L to be k-very ample.
We give an effective infinitesimal Torelli theorem for cyclic covers of G/P, where G is a simple algebraic group and P is a maximal parabolic subgroup.
We consider normal affine T-varieties X endowed with an action of finite abelian group G commuting with the action of T. For such varieties we establish the existence of G-equivariant geometrico-combinatorial presentations in the sense of Altmann and Hausen. As an application, we determine explicit presentations of the Koras-Russell threefolds as bi-cyclic covers of A^3 equipped with a hyperbolic C^*-action.
Given an abelian variety $A$ defined over a finite field $k$, we say that $A$ is "cyclic" if its group $A(k)$ of rational points is cyclic. In this paper we give a bijection between cyclic abelian varieties of an ordinary isogeny class $\mathcal{A}$ with Weil polynomial $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ and some classes of matrices with integer coefficients and having $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ as characteristic polynomial.
For a prime number $\ell$, an isogeny class $\mathcal{A}$ of abelian varieties is called $\ell$-cyclic if every variety in $\mathcal{A}$ have a cyclic $\ell$-part of its group of rational points. More generally, for a finite set of prime numbers $\mathcal{S}$, $\mathcal{A}$ is said to be $\mathcal{S}$-cyclic if it is $\ell$-cyclic for every $\ell\in\mathcal{S}$. We give lower and upper bounds on the fraction of $\mathcal{S}$-cyclic $g$-dimensional isogeny classes of abelian varieties defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, when $q$ tends to infinity.
The Prym map of type (g,n,r) associates to every cyclic covering of degree n of a curve of genus g, ramified at a reduced divisor of degree r, the corresponding Prym variety. We show that the corresponding map of moduli spaces is generically finite in most cases. From this we deduce the dimension of the image of the Prym map.
We study the order of automorphism groups of cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface. Arakawa and later Chen studied it for hyperelliptic fibrations and gave the upper bound. The purpose of present paper is to pursue the analog for cyclic covering fibrations.
In this note, we introduce the notion of an unramified strongly cyclic covering for a cyclic curve, a class that has similar properties to, and contains, unramified double covers of hyperelliptic curves. We determine several of their basic properties, extending the theorems in \cite{MR2217998} to this larger class. In particular, we will write down equations for smooth affine models, determine when they are isomorphic, and discuss the curves that they are ramified cyclic covers of.
Let $f:S\to B$ be a finite cyclic covering fibration of a fibered surface. We study the lower bound of slope $λ_{f}$ when the relative irregularity $q_{f}$ is positive.
We classify all $n$-dimensional reduced Cohen-Macaulay modular quotient variety $\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{F}^n/C_{2p}$ and study their singularities, where $p$ is a prime number and $C_{2p}$ denotes the cyclic group of order $2p$. In particular, we present an example that demonstrates that the problem proposed by Yasuda \cite[Problem 6.6]{Yas2015} has a negative answer if the condition that "$G$ is a small subgroup" was dropped.
We propose a simple criterion to know if an abelian variety $A$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is cyclic, i.e., it has a cyclic group of rational points; this criterion is based on the endomorphism ring End$_{\mathbb{F}_q}(A)$. We also provide a criterion to know if an isogeny class is cyclic, i.e., all its varieties are cyclic; this criterion is based on the characteristic polynomial of the isogeny class. We find some asymptotic lower bounds on the fraction of cyclic $\mathbb{F}_q$-isogeny classes among certain families of them, when $q$ tends to infinity. Some of these bounds req…
We study the rigid analytic geometry of cyclic coverings of the projective line. We determine the defining equation of a cyclic covering of degree $p$ of the projective line by a Mumford curve over a complete discrete valuation field of positive characteristic $p$. Previously, Bradley studied that of any degree over a non-archimedean local field of characteristic zero.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
We study the Seshadri constants of cyclic coverings of smooth surfaces. The existence of an automorphism on these surfaces can be used to produce Seshadri exceptional curves. We give a bound for multiple Seshadri constants on cyclic coverings of surfaces with Picard number 1. Morevoer, we apply this method to $n$-cyclic coverings of the projective plane. When $2\leq n\leq 9$, explicit values are obtained. We relate this problem with the Nagata conjecture.
For a smooth finite cyclic covering over a projective space of dimension greater than one, we show that the group of automorphisms acts faithfully on the cohomology except for a few cases. In characteristic zero, we study the equivariant deformation theory and automorphism groups for complex cyclic coverings. The proof uses the decomposition of the sheaf of differential forms due to Esnault and Viehweg. In positive characteristics, a lifting criterion of automorphisms reduces the faithfulness problem to characteristic zero. To apply this criterion, we prove the degeneration of the Hodge-de Rha…
We study the Prym map for degree-7 etale cyclic coverings over a curve of genus 2. We extend this map to a proper map on a partial compactification of the moduli space of such coverings, and prove that the Prym map is generically finite onto its image of degree 10.
We prove the generic injectivity of the Prym map, sending a double covering of an elliptic curve ramified at r>4 points to its polarized Prym variety. For r=6 the map is birational.
We give an algorithm to classify singular fibers of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface by using singularity diagrams. As the first application, we classify all fibers of 3-cyclic covering fibrations of genus 4 of a ruled surface and show that the signature of a complex surface with this fibration is non-positive by computing the local signature for any fiber. As the second application, we classify all fibers of hyperelliptic fibrations of genus 3 into 12 types according to the Horikawa index. We also prove that finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface have no mult…
We show that the Prym variety associated to a triple covering f: Y --> X of curves is principally polarized of dimension > 1, if and only if f is non-cyclic, etale and X is of genus 2. We investigate some properties of these Prym varieties and their moduli.
In [17], we proved a structure theorem on the Mordell-Weil group of abelian varieties over function fields that arise as the twists of abelian varieties by the cyclic covers of projective varieties in terms of the Prym varieties associated with covers. In this paper, we provide an explicit way to construct the abelian varieties with large ranks over the higher dimension function fields. To do so, we apply the above-mentioned theorem to the twists of Albanese varieties of the cyclic multiple planes.
Let $ψ$ be the period map for a family of the cyclic triple coverings of the complex projective line branching at six points. The symmetric group $S_6$ acts on this family and on its image under $ψ.$ In this paper, we give an $S_6$-equivariant expression of $ψ^{-1}$ in terms of fifteen theta constants.
We study the Prym varieties arising from étale cyclic coverings of degree 7 over a curve of genus 2. These Prym varieties are products of Jacobians JY x JY of genus 3 curves Y with polarization type D=(1,1,1,1,1,7). We describe the fibers of the Prym map between the moduli space of such coverings and the moduli space of abelian sixfolds with polarization type D, admitting an automorphism of order 7.
This article contains a new argument which proves vanishing of the first cohomology for negative vector bundles over a complex projective variety if the rank of the bundle is smaller than the dimension of the base. Similar argument is applied to the construction of holomorphic functions on the universal covering of the complex projective variety .
We show that the moduli spaces of non-triple cyclic coverings of genus 2 curves and that of even spin curves of genus 2 are birationally isomorphic via the Prym map. We describe the log canonical models of the moduli space of even spin curves of genus 2 and use this to extend the above birational map.
We show that the vector bundle associated to a smooth projective connected finite covering of a simple complex abelian variety is ample (under a simple necessary condition). This result is obtained by showing that this bundle is M-regular in the sense of Pareschi-Popa, and that any M-regular sheaf is ample.
Let $f:X\to Y$ be a finite ramified Galois covering of algebraic varieties defined over the complex numbers. In this paper, we prove some structure theorems for such coverings in the case that the non-abelian Galois group of the cover is metabelian (in particular metacyclic). Our results extend the previous ones, obtained by several authors, in the case of abelian and dihedral Galois coverings. In analogy with the abelian (and generalizing the dihedral) case, we find "building data" of metabelian covers from which the cover can be reconstructed. In addition to analyzing several examples, we co…
Under the condition that the Prym map is injective in characteristic $p$, we prove that the special subvarieties in the moduli space of abelian varieties of dimension $l$ and polarization type $D$, $A_{l,D}$, arising from families of abelian covers of $¶^1$ are of a very restrictive nature. In other words, if the family is one-dimensional or if it contains an eigenspace of certain type for the group action on the cohomology of fibers, then the Shimura varieties arising from such families can only be constructed by the group action of the family.
Exact bounds for the positions of the branch points for cyclic coverings of the $p$-adic projective line by Mumford curves are calculated in two ways. Firstly, by using Fumiharu Kato's *-trees, and secondly by giving explicit matrix representations of the Schottky groups corresponding to the Mumford curves above the projective line through combinatorial group theory.
To any pair of coverings $f_i: X \ra X_i, i = 1,2$ of smooth projective curves one can associate an abelian subvariety of the Jacobian $J_X$, the Prym variety $P(f_1,f_2)$ of the pair $(f_1,f_2)$. In some cases we can compute the type of the restriction of the canonical principal polarization of $JX$. We obtain 2 families of Prym-Tyurin varieties of exponent 6.
Let $Y$ be a smooth projective surface defined over an algebraically closed field $k$ with ${\rm Char}\ k\nmid n$, and let $π:X\rightarrow Y$ be a $n$-cyclic covering branched along a smooth divisor $B$. We show that under some conditions $\mathscr{T}_X$ is semi-stable with respect to $π^*\mathcal {H}$ if the tangent bundle $\mathscr{T}_Y$ is semi-stable with respect to some ample line bundle $\mathcal {H}$ on $Y$.
The article starts with some introductory material about resolution graphs of normal surface singularities (definitions, topological/homological properties, etc). We then discuss the case when the normal surface singularity is an N-fold cyclic covering of a surface germ, branched along a curve given by the germ of an analytic function f. We present non-trivial examples in order to show that from the embedded resolution graph G of f in general it is not possible to recover the resolution graph of the cyclic covering. The main results are the construction of a ``universal covering graph'' from t…
We study cyclic covering morphisms from $\bar{M}_{0,n}$ to moduli spaces of unpointed stable curves of positive genus or compactified moduli spaces of principally polarized abelian varieties. Our main application is a construction of new semipositive vector bundles and nef divisors on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$, with a view toward the F-conjecture. In particular, we construct new extremal rays of the symmetric nef cone of $\bar{M}_{0,n}$. We also find an alternate description of all sl level 1 conformal blocks divisors on $\bar{M}_{0,n}$.
In this paper we describe six pencils of K3-surfaces which have large Picard-Number and contain precisely five singular fibers: four have A-D-E singularities and one is non-reduced. In particular we describe these surfaces as cyclic coverings of the K3-surfaces which Barth and the author described in a previous manuscript (Asian. J. of Math. Vol. 7, No. 4, 519-538, Dec. 2003). In many cases using this description and lattice-Theory we are able to compute the exact Picard-number and to describe explicitly the Picard-lattices.
In this paper we prove that the Prym map, from the space of double coverings of a curve of genus g with r branch points to the moduli space of abelian varieties, is generically injective if r>6 and g>1, r=6 and g>2, r=4 and g>4, r=2 and g>5. We also show that a very generic Prym variety of dimension at least 4 is not isogenous to a Jacobian.
We construct families of Calabi-Yau manifolds with dense set of complex multiplication fibers in an arbitrary dimension. We will also give explicite examples of complex multiplication fibers. For this construction we use families of curves with dense set of complex multiplication fibers. In addition, we give examples of such families for each genus less or equal 7 and we study the generic Hodge groups of families of cyclic covers of the projective line.
We study slopes of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a fibered surface. We give the best possible lower bound of the slope of these fibrations. We also give the slope equality of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface and observe the local concentration of the global signature of these surfaces on a finite number of fiber germs. We also give an upper bound of the slope of finite cyclic covering fibrations of a ruled surface.
In this article, we investigate some properties of cyclic coverings of complex surfaces of general type branched along smooth curves that are numerically equivalent to a multiple of the canonical class. The main results concern coverings of surfaces of general type with p_g=0 and Miyaoka--Yau surfaces; in particular, they provide new examples of multicomponent moduli spaces of surfaces with given Chern numbers as well as new examples of surfaces that are not deformation equivalent to their complex conjugates.
Let K be a field not of characteristic 2 such that every finite separable extension of K is cyclic. Let A be an abelian variety over K. If K is infinite, then A(K) is Zariski-dense in A. If K is not locally finite, the rank of A over K is infinite.
The classical Kodaira Vanishing Theorem states that Hi(X, ωX \otimes L) = 0 for i > 0, where X is a smooth projective variety over C and L is an ample line bundle on X. We prove an analogous vanishing result under the assumption that X is a semi-smooth projective variety over C. This is done by passing to the normalization of X, which is a smooth projective variety when X is semi-smooth. The classical vanishing result is proved using a cyclic cover. Therefore we include a proof that the cyclic cover of a demi-normal variety is again demi-normal.

In a previous paper, the authors proved that the Prym variety of any non-cyclic etale triple cover of a smooth curve of genus 2 is a Jacobian variety of dimension 2. This gives a map from the moduli space of such covers to the moduli space of Jacobian varieties of dimension 2. We extend this map to a proper map of a certain moduli space of admissible $S_3$-covers of genus 7 to the moduli space of principally polarized abelian surfaces. The main result is that this map is finite surjective of degree 10.
It is well known that the Prym variety of an étale cyclic covering of a hyperelliptic curve is isogenous to the product of two Jacobians. Moreover, if the degree of the covering is odd or congruent to 2 mod 4, then the canonical isogeny is an isomorphism. We compute the degree of this isogeny in the remaining cases and show that only in the case of coverings of degree 4 it is an isomorphism.
The ordinariness of elliptic curves is essential in proving various expected properties of elliptic curves in positive characteristic and can be extended to algebraic curves of arbitrary genus. The present paper deals with another kind of extension, i.e., ordinariness of dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-opers, or more generally, dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_n$-opers. We prove that, for dormant $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-opers on elliptic curves, this notion is essentially equivalent to the classical ordinariness. Moreover, the main result of the present paper asserts that the pull-back of an ordinary dormant $\math…
We study the algebraic geometry of twisted Higgs bundles of cyclic type along complex curves. These objects, which generalize ordinary cyclic Higgs bundles, can be identified with representations of a cyclic quiver in a twisted category of coherent sheaves. Referring to the Hitchin fibration, we produce a fibre-wise geometric description of the locus of such representations within the ambient twisted Higgs moduli space. When the genus is 0, we produce a concrete geometric identification of the moduli space as a vector bundle over an associated (twisted) A-type quiver variety; we count the numb…
Given a family of Galois coverings of the projective line we give a simple sufficient condition ensuring that the closure of the image of the family via the period mapping is a special (or Shimura) subvariety in A_g. By a computer program we get the list of all families in genus up to 8 satisfying our condition. There is no family in genus 8, all of them are in genus at most 7. These examples are related to a conjecture of Oort. Among them we get the cyclic examples constructed by various authors (Shimura, Mostow, De Jong-Noot, Rohde, Moonen and others) and the abelian non-cyclic examples foun…
