Given an abelian variety $A$ defined over a finite field $k$, we say that $A$ is "cyclic" if its group $A(k)$ of rational points is cyclic. In this paper we give a bijection between cyclic abelian varieties of an ordinary isogeny class $\mathcal{A}$ with Weil polynomial $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ and some classes of matrices with integer coefficients and having $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ as characteristic polynomial.
For a prime number $\ell$, an isogeny class $\mathcal{A}$ of abelian varieties is called $\ell$-cyclic if every variety in $\mathcal{A}$ have a cyclic $\ell$-part of its group of rational points. More generally, for a finite set of prime numbers $\mathcal{S}$, $\mathcal{A}$ is said to be $\mathcal{S}$-cyclic if it is $\ell$-cyclic for every $\ell\in\mathcal{S}$. We give lower and upper bounds on the fraction of $\mathcal{S}$-cyclic $g$-dimensional isogeny classes of abelian varieties defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_{q}$, when $q$ tends to infinity.
In this paper we show that if $ϕ_{i}:A_{i}\rightarrow{A}$ is a semisimple pointed $K$-rational $\ell$-isogeny graph of order $n$ for a prime $\ell$, then the group of $\ell$-torsion points $A[\ell](\overline{K})$ contains a subspace of dimension $n$ generated by $K$-rational points. We also show that the same result is true for elliptic curves without the semisimplicity condition. Furthermore, we give an explicit counterexample for abelian varieties of higher dimension to show that the semisimplicity condition is indeed necessary.
We propose a simple criterion to know if an abelian variety $A$ defined over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ is cyclic, i.e., it has a cyclic group of rational points; this criterion is based on the endomorphism ring End$_{\mathbb{F}_q}(A)$. We also provide a criterion to know if an isogeny class is cyclic, i.e., all its varieties are cyclic; this criterion is based on the characteristic polynomial of the isogeny class. We find some asymptotic lower bounds on the fraction of cyclic $\mathbb{F}_q$-isogeny classes among certain families of them, when $q$ tends to infinity. Some of these bounds req…
Let $f\colon S'\longrightarrow S$ be a cyclic branched covering of smooth projective surfaces over $\mathbb{C}$ whose branch locus $Δ\subset S$ is a smooth ample divisor. Pick a very ample complete linear system $|\mathcal{H}|$ on $S$, such that the polarized surface $(S, |\mathcal{H}|)$ is not a scroll nor has rational hyperplane sections. For the general member $[C]\in|\mathcal{H}|$ consider the $μ_{n}$-equivariant isogeny decomposition of the Prym variety $Prym(C'/C)$ of the induced covering $f\colon C'= f^{-1}(C)\longrightarrow C$:\[Prym(C'/C)\sim\prod_{d|n,\ d\neq1}\mathcal{P}_{d}(C'/C).\…
We define three different isogeny graphs of principally polarized superspecial abelian varieties, prove foundational results on them, and explain their role in number theory and geometry. This is background to joint work with Yevgeny Zaytman on properties of these isogeny graphs for dimension $g>1$, especially the result that these graphs are connected, but not in general Ramanujan.
We consider the structures formed by isogenies of abelian varieties with polarizations that are not necessarily principal, specifically with the $[\ell]$-polarizations we have previously defined. Our primary interest is in superspecial abelian varieties, where the isogenies are related to quaternionic hermitian forms. We first consider isogeny graphs. We show that these $[\ell]$-isogeny graphs are a generalized Brandt graph and construct them entirely in terms of definite quaternion algebras. We prove that they are connected and give examples to show that the regular graphs obtained are someti…
We show that for a large class of rings $R$, the number of principally polarized abelian varieties over a finite field in a given simple ordinary isogeny class and with endomorphism ring $R$ is equal either to 0, or to a ratio of class numbers associated to $R$, up to some small computable factors. This class of rings includes the maximal order of the CM field $K$ associated to the isogeny class (for which the result was already known), as well as the order $R$ generated over $\mathbf{Z}$ by Frobenius and Verschiebung. For this latter order, we can use results of Louboutin to estimate the appr…
It is well known that the Prym variety of an étale cyclic covering of a hyperelliptic curve is isogenous to the product of two Jacobians. Moreover, if the degree of the covering is odd or congruent to 2 mod 4, then the canonical isogeny is an isomorphism. We compute the degree of this isogeny in the remaining cases and show that only in the case of coverings of degree 4 it is an isomorphism.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a finite field $k$. The $k$-isogeny class of $A$ is uniquely determined by the Weil polynomial $f_A$. We assume that $f_A$ is separable. For a given prime number $\ell\neq\mathrm{char}\, k$ we give a classification of group schemes $B[\ell]$, where $B$ runs through the isogeny class, in terms of certain Newton polygons associated to $f_A$. As an application we classify zeta functions of Kummer surfaces over $k$.
We extend to large contexts pertaining to Shimura varieties of Hodge type a result of Zink on the existence of lifts to characteristic 0 of suitable representatives of certain isogeny classes of abelian varieties endowed with Frobenius and other endomorphisms over $\dbF_{p^q}$, whose $p$-divisible groups in mixed characteristic $(0,p)$ are with complex multiplication.
The results in this paper imply that for every number field F and positive integer r, there exists an F-isogeny class of abelian varieties such that r divides the degree of every F-polarization on every abelian variety in the isogeny class.
We construct, for every prime p, a function field K of characteristic p and an ordinary abelian variety A over K, with no isotrivial factors, that admits an etale self-isogeny of p-power degree. As a consequence, we deduce that there exist ordinary abelian varieties over function fields whose groups of points over the maximal purely inseparable extension is not finitely generated, answering in the negative a question of Thomas Scanlon.
We study for each fixed integer $g \ge 2$, for all primes $\ell$ and $p$ with $\ell \neq p$, finite regular directed graphs associated with the set of equivalence classes of $\ell$-marked principally polarized superspecial abelian varieties of dimension $g$ in characteristic $p$, and show that the adjacency matrices have real eigenvalues with spectral gaps independent of $p$. This implies a rapid mixing property of natural random walks on the family of isogeny graphs beyond the elliptic curve case and suggests a potential construction of the Charles-Goren-Lauter type cryptographic hash functio…
We provide a simple method of constructing isogeny classes of abelian varieties over certain fields $k$ such that no variety in the isogeny class has a principal polarization. In particular, given a field $k$, a Galois extension $\ell$ of $k$ of odd prime degree $p$, and an elliptic curve $E$ over $k$ that has no complex multiplication over $k$ and that has no $k$-defined $p$-isogenies to another elliptic curve, we construct a simple $(p-1)$-dimensional abelian variety $X$ over $k$ such that every polarization of every abelian variety isogenous to $X$ has degree divisible by $p^2$. We note tha…
In this paper we improve our previous results on classification of groups of points on abelian varieties over finite fields. The classification is given in terms of the Weil polynomial of abelian varieties in a given $k$-isogeny class.
We give a description of endomorphism rings of Weil restrictions of abelian varieties with respect to finite Galois extensions. The results are applied to study the isogeny decomposition of Weil restrictions.
In this paper we study abelian varieties which correspond to CM points in the coarse moduli space of principally polarized abelian varieties with multiplication by a maximal order in a quaternion algebra over a totally real number field. These are abelian varieties of even dimension with quaternion and complex multiplication. We describe them explicitly via isogenies to products of abelian varieties of smaller dimension together with estimates on the degree of the isogeny.
An automorphism of an abelian variety induces a decomposition of the variety up to isogeny. There are two such results, namely the isotypical decomposition and Roan's decomposition theorem. We show that they are essentially the same. Moreover, we generalize in a sense this result to abelian varieties with action of an arbitrary finite abelian group.
We estimate the fraction of isogeny classes of abelian varieties over a finite field which have a given characteristic polynomial P(T) modulo l. As an application we find the proportion of isogeny classes of abelian varieties with a rational point of order l.
We prove that the embedding of a $GV$-subscheme in a principally polarized abelian variety does not factor through any nontrivial isogeny. As an application, we present a new proof of a theorem of Clemens--Griffiths identifying the intermediate Jacobian of a smooth cubic threefold in $\mathbf{P}^4$ to the Albanese variety of its Fano surface of lines.
For a nonsingular projective curve $C$ of genus 3 defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic $p > 2$, we give a necessary and sufficient condition that the Jacobian variety $J(C)$ has a decomposed Richelot isogeny outgoing from it and we determine the structures of decomposed ones.
We show that Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane are isogenous to product of isogeny components of abelian varieties associated with singularities of the ramification locus. In particular Albanese varieties of abelian covers of projective plane ramified over arrangements of lines and uniformized by unit ball are isogenous to a product of Jacobians of Fermat curves. Periodicity of the sequence of (semi-abelian) Albanese varieties of unramified cyclic covers of complements to a plane singular curve is shown.
Let Z be a subvariety of the moduli space of principally polarised abelian varieties of dimension g over the complex numbers. Suppose that Z contains a Zariski dense set of points which correspond to abelian varieties from a single isogeny class. A generalisation of a conjecture of André and Pink predicts that Z is a weakly special subvariety. We prove this when dim Z = 1 using the Pila--Zannier method and the Masser--Wüstholz isogeny theorem. This generalises results of Edixhoven and Yafaev when the Hecke orbit consists of CM points and of Pink when it consists of Galois generic points.
We construct a relative Chow-Kunneth decomposition for a conic bundle over a surface such that the middle projector gives the Prym variety of the associated double covering of the discriminant of the conic bundle. This gives a refinement (up to an isogeny) of Beauville's theorem on the relation between the intermediate Jacobian of the conic bundle and the Prym variety of the double covering.
Let $E$ be an ordinary elliptic curve over a finite field and $g$ be a positive integer. Under some technical assumptions, we give an algorithm to span the isomorphism classes of principally polarized abelian varieties in the isogeny class of $E^g$. The varieties are first described as hermitian lattices over (not necessarily maximal) quadratic orders and then geometrically in terms of their algebraic theta null point. We also show how to algebraically compute Siegel modular forms of even weight given as polynomials in the theta constants by a careful choice of an affine lift of the theta null…
We give an effective infinitesimal Torelli theorem for cyclic covers of G/P, where G is a simple algebraic group and P is a maximal parabolic subgroup.
We consider normal affine T-varieties X endowed with an action of finite abelian group G commuting with the action of T. For such varieties we establish the existence of G-equivariant geometrico-combinatorial presentations in the sense of Altmann and Hausen. As an application, we determine explicit presentations of the Koras-Russell threefolds as bi-cyclic covers of A^3 equipped with a hyperbolic C^*-action.
Let $f$ be a morphism from a klt pair $(X, Δ)$ to an abelian variety $A$, $m\geq1$ a rational number and $D$ a Cartier divisor on $X$ such that $D\sim_{\mathbb Q}m(K_X+Δ)$. We prove that the sheaf $f_*\mathcal{O}_X(D)$ becomes globally generated after pullback by an isogeny and has the Chen-Jiang decomposition, along with some related results. These are applied to some effective results for $\mathcal{O}_X(D)$ when $X$ is irregular.
Given Prym-Tyurin varieties of exponent $q$ with respect to a finite group $G$, a subgroup $H$ and a set of rational irreducible representations of $G$ satisfying some additional properties, we construct a Prym-Tyurin variety of exponent $[G:H]q$ in a natural way. We study an example of this result, starting from the dihedral group $\mathbf{D}_p$ for any odd prime $p$. This generalizes the construction of arXiv:math/0412103v2[math.AG] for $p=3$. Finally, we compute the isogeny decomposition of the Jacobian of the curve underlying the above mentioned example.

The Prym map of type (g,n,r) associates to every cyclic covering of degree n of a curve of genus g, ramified at a reduced divisor of degree r, the corresponding Prym variety. We show that the corresponding map of moduli spaces is generically finite in most cases. From this we deduce the dimension of the image of the Prym map.
Let $f \colon X \to A$ be a morphism from a smooth projective variety to an abelian variety (over the field of complex numbers). We show that the sheaves $f_* ω_X^{\otimes m}$ become globally generated after pullback by an isogeny. We use this to deduce a decomposition theorem for these sheaves when $m \ge 2$, analogous to that obtained by Chen-Jiang when $m = 1$. This is in turn applied to effective results for pluricanonical linear series on irregular varieties with canonical singularities.
We prove the isogeny property for special fibres of integral canonical models of compact Shimura varieties of $A_n$, $B_n$, $C_n$, and $D_n^{\dbR}$ type. The approach used also shows that many crystalline cycles on abelian varieties over finite fields which are specializations of Hodge cycles, are algebraic. These two results have many applications. First, we prove a variant of the conditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture for these special fibres. Second, for certain isogeny sets we prove a variant of the unconditional Langlands--Rapoport conjecture (like for many basic loci). Third, we prov…
Let $X$ be a normal projective algebraic variety, $G$ its largest connected automorphism group, and $A(G)$ the Albanese variety of $G$. We determine the isogeny class of $A(G)$ in terms of the geometry of $X$. In characteristic 0, we show that the dimension of $A(G)$ is the rank of every maximal trivial direct summand of the tangent sheaf of $X$. Also, we obtain an optimal bound for the dimension of the largest anti-affine closed subgroup of $G$ (which is the smallest closed subgroup that maps onto $A(G)$).
In this paper we study super-isolated abelian varieties, that is, abelian varieties over finite fields whose isogeny class contains a single isomorphism class. The goal of this paper is to (1) characterize whether a product of super-isolated varieties is super-isolated, and (2) characterize which super-isolated abelian varieties admit principal polarizations, and how many up to polarized isomorphisms.
Let G be a finite group acting on a smooth projective curve X. This induces an action of G on the Jacobian JX of X and thus a decomposition of JX up to isogeny. The most prominent example of such a situation is the group G of two elements. Let X --> Y denote the corresponding quotient map. Then JX is isogenous to the product of JY with the Prym variety of X/Y. In this paper some general results on group actions on abelian varieties are given and applied to deduce a decomposition of the jacobian JX for arbitrary group actions. Several examples are given.
We classify all $n$-dimensional reduced Cohen-Macaulay modular quotient variety $\mathbb{A}_\mathbb{F}^n/C_{2p}$ and study their singularities, where $p$ is a prime number and $C_{2p}$ denotes the cyclic group of order $2p$. In particular, we present an example that demonstrates that the problem proposed by Yasuda \cite[Problem 6.6]{Yas2015} has a negative answer if the condition that "$G$ is a small subgroup" was dropped.
Consider all moduli points corresponding with polarized abelian varieties in characteristic p such that the associated quasi-polarized p-divisible group is geometrically isomorphic with a given one. This defines a subset C of the moduli space. We show that C is closed in the corresponding open Newton polygon stratum. In this way the stratum is the disjoint union of such "central leaves". Under local-local isogenies we consider the orbit of one point: we obtain a second type of leaves. Every stratum, up to a finite map, is the product of one of its central leaves and one of its isogeny leaves. …
We prove that the irreducible components of primitive class Severi varieties of general abelian surfaces are completely determined by the maximal factorization through an isogeny of the maps from the normalized curves.
The paper studies a relation between fundamental group of the complement to a plane singular curve and the orbifold pencils containing it. The main tool is the use of Albanese varieties of cyclic covers ramified along such curves. Our results give sufficient conditions for a plane singular curve to belong to an orbifold pencil, i.e. a pencil of plane curves with multiple fibers inducing a map onto an orbifold curve whose orbifold fundamental group is non trivial. We construct an example of a cyclic cover of the projective plane which is an abelian surface isomorphic to the Jacobian of a curve …
