We give a description of endomorphism rings of Weil restrictions of abelian varieties with respect to finite Galois extensions. The results are applied to study the isogeny decomposition of Weil restrictions.
We analyze the relationship between abelian fourfolds of Weil type and Hodge structures of type K3, and we extend some of these correspondences to the case of arbitrary dimension.
The étale Brauer\textendash Manin obstruction is equivalent to each other among Weil restrictions of an arbitrarily given quasi-projective algebraic variety defined over a number field.
The main goal of this paper is to show that the notions of Weil and Cartier $\mathbb{Q}$-divisors coincide for $V$-manifolds and give a procedure to express a rational Weil divisor as a rational Cartier divisor. The theory is illustrated on weighted projective spaces and weighted blow-ups.
Let X be the variety obtained by the Weil transfer with respect to a quadratic separable field extension of a generalized Severi-Brauer variety. We study (and, in some cases, determine) the canonical dimension, incompressibility, and motivic indecomposability of X. We determine the canonical 2-dimension of X (in the general case).
We show that the Mordell Weil rank of an isotrivial abelian variety with a cyclic holonomy depends only on the fundamental group of the complement to the discriminant provided the discriminant has singularities in the introduced here CM class. This class of singularities includes all unibranched plane curves singularities. As a corollary we give a family of simple Jacobians over field of rational functions in two variable for which the Mordell Weil rank is arbitrary large.
Let $k$ be a field, $A$ a finite $k$-algebra and $X$ a smooth $A$-scheme. We describe the Galois set of connected components of the Weil restriction $\Re_{A/k}(X)$ in terms of the sets of connected components of the geometric fibers of $X$.
We introduce a concept that we call module restriction, which generalizes the classical Weil restriction. We first establish some fundamental properties, as existence and étaleness. Then we apply our results to show that Grothendiecks Quot functor parameterizing finite and flat quotients of a given quasi-coherent sheaf on a separated algebraic space, is representable.
We introduce and develop the theory of Newton nondegenerate local Weil divisors $(X,0)$ in toric affine varieties. We characterize in terms of the toric combinatorics of the Newton diagram different properties of such singular germs: normality, Gorenstein property, or being an Cartier divisor in the ambient space. We discuss certain properties of their (canonical) resolution $\tilde{X}\to X $ and the corresponding canonical divisor. We provide combinatorial formulae for the delta--invariant $δ(X,0)$ and for the cohomology groups $H^i(\tilde X,\mathcal{O}_{\tilde X})$ for $i>0$. In the case $\d…
Recent papers by Markman and O'Grady give, besides their main results on the Hodge conjecture and on hyperkaehler varieties, surprising and explicit descriptions of families of abelian fourfolds of Weil type with trivial discriminant. They also provide a new perspective on the well-known fact that these abelian varieties are Kuga Satake varieties for certain weight two Hodge structures of rank six. In this paper we give a pedestrian introduction to these results. The spinor map, which is defined using a half-spin representation of SO(8), is used intensively. For simplicity, we use basic repres…
We establish a trace formula for rigid varieties $X$ over a complete discretely valued field, which relates the set of unramified points on $X$ to the Galois action on its étale cohomology. We develop a theory of motivic integration for formal schemes of pseudo-finite type over a complete discrete valuation ring $R$, and we introduce the Weil generating series of a regular formal $R$-scheme $\mathfrak{X}$ of pseudo-finite type, via the construction of a Gelfand-Leray form on its generic fiber. Our trace formula yields a cohomological interpretation of this Weil generating series. When $\mathfr…
We determine the behavior under Weil restriction of the group of connected components of the special fiber of an arbitrary smooth group scheme (whose Weil restriction exists) over an arbitrary (commutative and unital) local ring. Applications to Néron models are given.
In this paper, we investigate the explicit birational geometry for projective $ε$-lc varieties polarised by nef and big Weil divisors. We show that if $X$ is a projective $ε$-lc variety, $H$ is a nef and big Weil divisor with $\dim\overline{φ_{H}(X)}\geq n-1$ and $L$ is an effective Weil divisor such that $|L-K_X|\neq \emptyset$ or $L-K_X$ is nef, then we can find an explicit lower bound of $\text{vol}(H)$ and prove that $|L+m^\prime H|$ is birational for $m^\prime\geq m$, where $m$ is an explicit number which depends only on $n$ and $ε$. This result can be applied to polarised Calabi-Yau vari…
In this paper we construct abelian varieties of large Mordell-Weil rank over function fields. We achieve this by using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety to higher dimensions and a structure theorem for the Mordell-Weil group of abelian varieties over function fields proven in our previous works. We consider abelian and dihedral covers of the projective space and apply the above results to the twists of their Albanese varieties.
We consider the finite set of isogeny classes of $g$-dimensional abelian varieties defined over the finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$ with endomorphism algebra being a field. We prove that the class within this set whose varieties have maximal number of rational points is unique, for any prime even power $q$ big enough and verifying mild conditions. We describe its Weil polynomial and we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic outside the primes dividing an integer that only depends on $g$. In dimension $3$, we prove that the class is ordinary and cyclic and give explicitly its Weil polynomial, …
We use a generalised Kummer construction to realise all but one known weight four newforms with complex multiplication and rational Fourier coefficients in smooth Calabi-Yau threefolds defined over the rational numbers. The Calabi-Yau manifolds are smooth models of quotients of the Weil restrictions of elliptic curves with CM of class number three.
We compare the asymptotic grows of the number of rational points on modular varieties of D-elliptic sheaves over finite fields to the grows of their Betti numbers as the degree of the level tends to infinity. This is a generalization to higher dimensions of a well-known result for modular curves. As a consequence of the main result, we also produce a new asymptotically optimal sequence of curves.
In this text we investigate the good behaviour of the elementary obstruction, introduced by Colliot-Thelene and Sansuc. This is an obstruction to the existence of a rational points on certain algebraic varieties. Assuming some conditions on the Picard group, we prove that the elementary obstruction behaves well under the Weil restriction of a variety.
Given an extension of number fields $E \subset F$ and a projective variety $X$ over $F$, we compare the problem of counting the number of rational points of bounded height on $X$ with that of its Weil restriction over $E$. In particular, we consider the compatibility with respect to the Weil restriction of conjectural asymptotic formulae due to Manin and others. Using our methods we prove several new cases of these conjectures. We also construct new counterexamples over every number field.
Consider a complex abelian variety X on which a field F acts. Generalizing a construction of A. Weil, one associates to this a subspace W_F of the cohomology of X, which we call the space of Weil classes w.r.t. F. The purpose of this paper is to answer the following two questions: Q1: under what conditions on F does the space W_F contain, or even consist of, Hodge classes?, Q2: if W_F contains Hodge classes, under what conditions on F are these exceptional? In case X is defined over a number field, we also answer the analogous questions for Tate classes.
We formulate and prove a local arithmetic Siegel--Weil formula for GSpin Rapoport--Zink spaces, which is a precise identity between the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on GSpin Rapoport--Zink spaces and the derivatives of local representation densities of quadratic forms. As a first application, we prove a semi-global arithmetic Siegel--Weil formula as conjectured by Kudla, which relates the arithmetic intersection numbers of special cycles on GSpin Shimura varieties at a place of good reduction and the central derivatives of nonsingular Fourier coefficients of incoherent Sie…
Let $K$ be a field finitely generated over the field of rational numbers, $K(c)$ the extension of $K$ obtained by adjoining all roots of unity, $L$ an infinite Galois extension of $K$, $X$ an abelian variety defined over $K$. We prove that under certain conditions on $X$ and $K$ the existence of infinitely many L-rational points of finite order on $X$ implies that the intersection of $L$ and $K(c)$ has infinite degree over $K$.
In this paper we investigate the geometry of projective varieties polarised by ample and more generally nef and big Weil divisors. First we study birational boundedness of linear systems. We show that if $X$ is a projective variety of dimension $d$ with $ε$-lc singularities for $ε>0$, and if $N$ is a nef and big Weil divisor on $X$ such that $N-K_X$ is pseudo-effective, then the linear system $|mN|$ defines a birational map for some natural number $m$ depending only on $d,ε$. This is key to proving various other results. For example, it implies that if $N$ is a big Weil divisor (not necessaril…
In this paper we improve our previous results on classification of groups of points on abelian varieties over finite fields. The classification is given in terms of the Weil polynomial of abelian varieties in a given $k$-isogeny class.
Restriction varieties in the orthogonal Grassmannian are subvarieties of $OG(k, n)$ defined by rank conditions given by a flag that is not necessarily isotropic with respect to the relevant symmetric bilinear form. In particular, Schubert varieties of Type B and D are examples of restriction varieties. In this paper, we introduce a resolution of singularities for restriction varieties in $OG(k, n)$, and give a description of their singular locus by studying components of the exceptional locus of the resolution.
We classify pairs $(S, γ)$, consisting of a rational elliptic surface $S$ and a Galois cover $γ$ of the base, which satisfy a condition we call $\mathcal{L}$-stability. We explain how to use the theory of Mordell-Weil lattices to compute the kernel of the restriction maps of Weil-Chatelet groups for $\mathcal{L}$-stable pairs. We also prove results about the injectivity of restriction maps of Weil-Chatelet groups for some pairs which are not $\mathcal{L}$-stable.
We calculate the total derived functor for the map from the Weil-etale site introduced by Lichtenbaum to the etale site for varieties over finite fields. In particular, there is a long exact sequence relating Weil-etale cohomology and etale cohomology. In the second half of the paper, we apply this to study the Weil-etale cohomology of the motivic complex for smooth and projective varieties. These groups are expected to be finitely generated, to give an integral model for l-adic cohomology, and to be related to special values of the zeta function. We give necessary and sufficient conditions fo…
In this paper, using a generalization of the notion of Prym variety for covers of quasi-projective varieties, we prove a structure theorem for the Mordell-Weil group of the abelian varieties over function fields that are twists of Abelian varieties by Galois covers of irreducible quasi-projective varieties. In particular, the resutls we obtain contribute in the construction of Jacobians (of covers of the projective line) of high rank.
Given number fields $L \supset K$, smooth projective curves $C$ defined over $L$ and $B$ defined over $K$, and a non-constant $L$-morphism $h \colon C \to B_L$,we consider the curve $C_h$ defined over $K$ whose $K$-rational points parametrize the $L$-rational points on $C$ whose images under $h$ are defined over $K$. Our construction provides a framework which includes as a special case that used in Elliptic Curve Chabauty techniques and their higher genus versions. The set $C_h(K)$ can be infinite only when $C$ has genus at most 1; we analyze completely the case when $C$ has genus 1.
We study Weil-etale cohomology, introduced by Lichtenbaum for varieties over finite fields. In the first half of the paper we give an explicit description of the base change from Weil-etale cohomology to etale cohomology. As a consequence, we get a long exact sequence relating Weil-etale cohomology to etale cohomology, show that for finite coefficients the cohomology theories agree, and with rational coefficients a Weil-etale cohomology group is the direct sum of two etale cohomology groups. In the second half of the paper we restrict ourselves to Weil-etale cohomology of the motivic complex. …
Results on stability of tautological sheaves on Hilbert schemes of points are extended to higher dimensions and transferred to abelian surfaces and to the restriction of tautological sheaves to generalised Kummer varieties. This provides a big class of new examples of stable sheaves on higher dimensional irreducible symplectic manifolds. Some aspects of deformations of tautological sheaves are studied.
The Weil restriction functor, introduced in the late fifties, was recently extended by Karpenko to the category of Chow motives with integral coefficients. In this article we introduce the noncommutative (=NC) analogue of the Weil restriction functor, where schemes are replaced by dg algebras, and extend it to Kontsevich's categories of NC Chow motives and NC numerical motives. Instead of integer coefficients, we work more generally with coefficients in a binomial ring. Along the way, we extend Karpenko's functor to the classical category of numerical motives, and compare this extension with i…
We systematically study the splitting of vector bundles on a smooth, projective variety, whose restriction to the zero locus of a regular section of an ample vector bundle splits. First, we find ampleness and genericity conditions which ensure that the splitting of the vector bundle along the subvariety implies its global splitting. Second, we obtain a simple splitting criterion for vector bundles on the Grassmannian and on partial flag varieties.
Let $K$ be a field finitely generated over ${\Q}$, and $A$ an Abelian variety defined over $K$. Then by the Mordell-Weil Theorem, the set of rational points $A(K)$ is a finitely-generated Abelian group. In this paper, assuming Tate's Conjecture on algebraic cycles, we prove a limit formula for the Mordell-Weil rank of an arbitrary family of Abelian varieties $A$ over a number field $k$; this is the Abelian fibration analogue of the Nagao formula for elliptic surfaces $E$, originally conjectured by Nagao, and proven by Rosen and Silverman to be equivalent to Tate's Conjecture for $E$. We also g…
Given an abelian variety $A$ defined over a finite field $k$, we say that $A$ is "cyclic" if its group $A(k)$ of rational points is cyclic. In this paper we give a bijection between cyclic abelian varieties of an ordinary isogeny class $\mathcal{A}$ with Weil polynomial $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ and some classes of matrices with integer coefficients and having $f_{\mathcal{A}}$ as characteristic polynomial.
We construct natural Green forms for special cycles in orthogonal and unitary Shimura varieties, in all codimensions, and, for compact Shimura varieties of type O(p,2) and U(p,1), we show that the resulting local archimedean height pairings are related to special values of derivatives of Siegel Eisentein series. A conjecture put forward by Kudla relates these derivatives to arithmetic intersections of special cycles, and our results settle the part of his conjecture involving local archimedean heights.
We give a proof that the Riemann hypothesis for hypersurfaces over finite fields implies the result for all smooth proper varieties, by a deformation argument which does not use the theory of Lefschetz pencils or the l-adic Fourier transform.
Let X be a normal affine algebraic variety with regular action of a torus \TT and T\subset\TT be a subtorus. We prove that each root of X with respect to T can be obtained by restriction of some root of X with respect to \TT. This allows to get an elementary proof of the description of roots of the affine Cremona group. Several results on restriction of roots in the case of subtorus action on an affine toric variety are obtained.
We study the $A$-discriminant of toric varieties. We reduce its computation to the case of irreducible configurations and describe its behavior under specialization of some of the variables to zero. We prove a Gale dual characterization of dual defect toric varieties and deduce from it the classsification of such varieties in codimension less than or equal to four. This classification motivates a decomposition theorem which yields a sufficient condition for a toric variety to be dual defect. For codimension less than or equal to four, this condition is also necessary and we expect this to be t…
Let X->P^(n-1) be an elliptic fibration obtained by resolving the indeterminacy of the projection of a cubic hypersurface Y of P^(n+1) from a line L not contained in Y. We prove that the Mordell-Weil group of the elliptic fibration is finite if and only if the Cox ring of X is finitely generated. We also provide a presentation of the Cox ring of X when it is finitely generated.
Let $A$ be an abelian variety over a finite field $k$. The $k$-isogeny class of $A$ is uniquely determined by the Weil polynomial $f_A$. We assume that $f_A$ is separable. For a given prime number $\ell\neq\mathrm{char}\, k$ we give a classification of group schemes $B[\ell]$, where $B$ runs through the isogeny class, in terms of certain Newton polygons associated to $f_A$. As an application we classify zeta functions of Kummer surfaces over $k$.
Let $X$ be a smooth projective variety over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic, and $f$ a dynamical correspondence of $X$. In 2016, the second author conjectured that the dynamical degrees of $f$ defined by the pullback actions on étale cohomology groups and on numerical cycle class groups are equivalent, which we call the dynamical degree comparison (DDC) conjecture. It contains the generalized Weil's Riemann hypothesis (for polarized endomorphisms) as a special case. To proceed, we introduce the so-called Conjecture $G_r$, which is a quantitative strengthening of the s…
In this paper we study Hodge classes on complex abelian varieties. We prove some general results that allow us, in certain cases, to compute the Hodge group of a product abelian variety $X = X_1 \times X_2$ once we know the Hodge groups of the two factors. Using these results we can compute the Hodge groups of all abelian varieties of dimension $\leq 5$. We prove that the Hodge ring of any such abelian variety $X$ is generated by divisor classes together with the so-called Weil classes on (quotients of) $X$.
In this paper we give a module-theoretic description of the isomorphism classes of abelian varieties $A$ isogenous to $B^r$, where the characteristic polynomial $g$ of Frobenius of $B$ is an ordinary square-free $q$-Weil polynomial, for a power $q$ of a prime $p$, or a square-free $p$-Weil polynomial with no real roots. Under some extra assumptions on the polynomial $g$ we give an explicit description of all the isomorphism classes which can be computed in terms of fractional ideals of an order in a finite product of number fields. In the ordinary case, we also give a module-theoretic descript…
The Borel-Weil-Bott theorem describes the cohomology of line bundles over flag varieties. Here, one generalizes this theorem to a wider class of projective varieties : the wonderful varieties of minimal rank.
Given a prime power $q$ and $n \gg 1$, we prove that every integer in a large subinterval of the Hasse--Weil interval $[(\sqrt{q}-1)^{2n},(\sqrt{q}+1)^{2n}]$ is $#A(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for some geometrically simple ordinary principally polarized abelian variety $A$ of dimension $n$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. As a consequence, we generalize a result of Howe and Kedlaya for $\mathbb{F}_2$ to show that for each prime power $q$, every sufficiently large positive integer is realizable, i.e., $#A(\mathbb{F}_q)$ for some abelian variety $A$ over $\mathbb{F}_q$. Our result also improves upon the best known const…
We study the arithmetic of abelian varieties over $K=k(t)$ where $k$ is an arbitrary field. The main result relates Mordell-Weil groups of certain Jacobians over $K$ to homomorphisms of other Jacobians over $k$. Our methods also yield completely explicit points on elliptic curves with unbounded rank over $\Fpbar(t)$ and a new construction of elliptic curves with moderately high rank over $\C(t)$.
We prove, following Deligne and André, that the Hodge classes on abelian varieties of CM-type can be expressed in terms of divisor classes and split Weil classes, and we describe some consequences. In particular, we show that Grothendieck's standard conjecture of Lefschetz type implies the Hodge conjecture for abelian varieties (Abdulali, André, ...).
This note aims at providing evidence for the section conjecture of anabelian geometry by establishing its behaviour under Weil restriction of scalars. In particular, the etale fundamental group of the Weil restriction is determined by means of a Shapiro Lemma for non-abelian group cohomology.
We introduce a cohomology theory for a class of projective varieties over a finite field coming from the canonical trace on a C*-algebra attached to the variety. Using the cohomology, we prove the rationality, functional equation and the Betti numbers conjectures for the zeta function of the variety.
