We calculate the total derived functor for the map from the Weil-etale site introduced by Lichtenbaum to the etale site for varieties over finite fields. In particular, there is a long exact sequence relating Weil-etale cohomology and etale cohomology. In the second half of the paper, we apply this to study the Weil-etale cohomology of the motivic complex for smooth and projective varieties. These groups are expected to be finitely generated, to give an integral model for l-adic cohomology, and to be related to special values of the zeta function. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for this to hold, and examples.
We study Weil-etale cohomology, introduced by Lichtenbaum for varieties over finite fields. In the first half of the paper we give an explicit description of the base change from Weil-etale cohomology to etale cohomology. As a consequence, we get a long exact sequence relating Weil-etale cohomology to etale cohomology, show that for finite coefficients the cohomology theories agree, and with rational coefficients a Weil-etale cohomology group is the direct sum of two etale cohomology groups. In the second half of the paper we restrict ourselves to Weil-etale cohomology of the motivic complex. …
We define the fundamental group underlying to Lichtenbaum's Weil-étale cohomology for number rings. To this aim, we define the Weil-étale topos as a refinement of the Weil-étale sites introduced in \cite{Lichtenbaum}. We show that the (small) Weil-étale topos of a smooth projective curve defined in this paper is equivalent to the natural definition given in \cite{Lichtenbaum-finite-field}. Then we compute the Weil-étale fundamental group of an open subscheme of the spectrum of a number ring. Our fundamental group is a projective system of locally compact topological groups, which represents fi…
We construct the Weil-étale cohomology and Euler characteristics for a subclass of the class of $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaves on the spectrum of the ring of integers of a totally imaginary number field. Then we show that the special value of an Artin L-function of toric type at zero is given by the Weil-étale Euler characteristic of an appropriate $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaf up to signs. As applications of our result, we will derive some classical formulas of special values of L-functions of tori and their class numbers.
We give a reformulation of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture over global function fields in terms of Weil-etale cohomology of the curve with coefficients in the Neron model, and show that it holds under the assumption of finiteness of the Tate-Shafarevich group.
We establish duality results for the cohomology of the Weil group of a $p$-adic field, analogous to, but more general than, results from Galois cohomology. We prove a duality theorem for discrete Weil modules, which implies Tate-Nakayama Duality. We define Weil-smooth cohomology for varieties over local fields, and prove a duality theorem for the cohomology of $\G_m$ on a smooth, proper curve with a rational point. This last theorem is analogous to, and implies, a classical duality theorem for such curves.
We define and study a Weil-étale topos for any regular, proper scheme $X$ over $\Spec(Z)$ which has some of the properties suggested by Lichtenbaum for such a topos. In particular, the cohomology with $R$-coefficients has the expected relation to $ζ(X,s)$ at $s=0$ if the Hasse-Weil L-functions $L(h^i(X_Q),s)$ have the expected meromorphic continuation and functional equation. If $\X$ has characteristic $p$ the cohomology with $Z$-coefficients also has the expected relation to $ζ(X,s)$ and our cohomology groups recover those previously studied by Lichtenbaum and Geisser.
We give a direct description of the category of sheaves on Lichtenbaum's Weil-étale site of a number ring. Then we apply this result to define a spectral sequence relating Weil-étale cohomology to Artin-Verdier étale cohomology. Finally we construct complexes of étale sheaves computing the expected Weil-étale cohomology.
We would like to construct a new Grothendieck topology for arithmetic schemes, whose cohomology groups associated with motivic complexes of sheaves are finitely generated and whose Euler characteristics are related to special values of zeta-functions. In this paper we construct this topology for rings of algebraic integers and show that the cohomology of the constant sheaf Z is related to the behavior of zeta-functions at s = 0.
Let X be a smooth or proper variety defined over a finite field. The geometric etale fundamental group of X is a normal subgroup of the Weil group, so conjugation gives it a Weil action. We consider the pro-Q_l-algebraic completion of the fundamental group as a non-abelian Weil representation. Lafforgue's Theorem and Deligne's Weil II theorems imply that this affine group scheme is mixed, in the sense that its structure sheaf is a mixed Weil representation. When X is smooth, weight restrictions apply, affecting the possibilities for the structure of this group. This gives new examples of group…
We give a conjectural description of the vanishing order and leading Taylor coefficient of the Zeta function of a proper, regular arithmetic scheme $\mathcal{X}$ at any integer $n$ in terms of Weil-étale cohomology complexes. This extends work of Lichtenbaum \cite{Lichtenbaum05} and Geisser \cite{Geisser04b} for $\mathcal{X}$ of characteristic $p$, of Lichtenbaum \cite{li04} for $\mathcal{X}=\mathrm{Spec}(\mathcal{O}_F)$ and $n=0$ where $F$ is a number field, and of the second author for arbitrary $\mathcal{X}$ and $n=0$ \cite{Morin14}. We show that our conjecture is compatible with the Tamaga…
In this article, we first briefly introduce the history of the Weil-étale cohomology theory of arithmetic schemes and review some important results established by Lichtenbaum, Flach and Morin. Next we generalize the Weil-etale cohomology to $S$-integers and compute the cohomology for constant sheaves $\mathbb{Z}$ or $\mathbb{R}$. We also define a Weil-étale cohomology with compact support $H_c(Y_W, -)$ for $Y=Spec \mathcal{O}_{F,S}$ where $F$ is a number field, and computed them. We verify that these cohomology groups satisfy the axioms state by Lichtenbaum. As an application, we derive a cano…
Lichtenbaum has conjectured the existence of a Grothendieck topology for an arithmetic scheme $X$ such that the Euler characteristic of the cohomology groups of the constant sheaf $\mathbb{Z}$ with compact support at infinity gives, up to sign, the leading term of the zeta-function $ζ_X(s)$ at $s=0$. In this paper we consider the category of sheaves $\bar{X}_L$ on this conjectural site for $X=Spec(\mathcal{O}_F)$ the spectrum of a number ring. We show that $\bar{X}_L$ has, under natural topological assumptions, a well defined fundamental group whose abelianization is isomorphic, as a topologic…
We construct the Weil-étale cohomology and Euler characteristics for a subclass of the class of $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaves on an open subscheme of the spectrum of the ring of integers of a number field. Then we show that the special value of an Artin L-function of toric type at zero is given by the Weil-étale Euler characteristic of an appropriate $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaf up to signs. As applications of our result, we will prove a formula for the special value of the L-function of an algebraic torus at zero which is similar to Ono's Tamagawa Number Formula.
Deligne's conjecture is the Lefschetz trace formula for correspondences defined over a finite field. In this paper, we prove an analogous statement of Deligne's conjecture with respect to $p^n$-torsion étale cohomology under certain conditions, where $p$ is the characteristic of the base field.
The purpose of this paper is to give a formula for the leading coefficient at $s=1$ of the $L$-function of one-motives over function fields in terms of Weil-étale cohomology, generalizing the Weil-étale version of the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture in the authors' previous work. As a consequence we express the Tamagawa number of a torus introduced by Ono-Oesterlé in terms of Weil-étale cohomology, and reprove their Tamagawa number formula.
For a curve $C$ over a perfect field $k$ of characteristic $p > 0$ we study the tame cohomology of $X = \textit{Spa}(C,k)$ introduced in arXiv:1801.04776. We prove that the tame cohomology groups of $X$ with $p$-torsion coefficients satisfy cohomological purity (which is not true in full generality for the étale cohomology). Using purity we show Poincaré duality for the tame cohomology of $X$ with $p$-torsion coefficients.
Let $X$ be a smooth proper variety of even dimension $d$ over a finite field. We establish a restriction on the value at $(-1)$ of the characteristic polynomial of the Frobenius on the middle-dimensional étale cohomology of $X$ with coefficients in ${\mathbb Q}_l(d/2)$.
This paper is Part III of the series of work by the first named author on duality theories for p-primary etale cohomology, whose Parts I and II were published in 1986 and 1987, respectively. In this Part III, we study a duality for p-primary etale nearby cycles on smooth schemes over henselian discrete valuation rings of mixed characteristic (0, p) whose residue field is not necessarily perfect.
We prove a general inequality for estimating the number of points of arbitrary complete intersections over a finite field. This extends a result of Deligne for nonsingular complete intersections. For normal complete intersections, this inequality generalizes also the classical Lang-Weil inequality. Moreover, we prove the Lang-Weil inequality for affine as well as projective varieties with an explicit description and a bound for the constant appearing therein. We also prove a conjecture of Lang and Weil concerning the Picard varieties and étale cohomology spaces of projective varieties. The gen…
We prove some $\ell$-independence results on local constancy of étale cohomology of rigid analytic varieties. As a result, we show that a closed subscheme of a proper scheme over an algebraically closed complete non-archimedean field has a small open neighborhood in the analytic topology such that, for every prime number $\ell$ different from the residue characteristic, the closed subscheme and the open neighborhood have the same étale cohomology with $\mathbb Z/\ell \mathbb Z$-coefficients. The existence of such an open neighborhood for each $\ell$ was proved by Huber. A key ingredient in the…
Let $K$ be a field of characteristic zero complete for a discrete valuation, with perfect residue field of characteristic $p>0$, and let $K^+$ be the valuation ring of $K$. We relate the log-crystalline cohomology of the special fibre of certain affine $K^+$-schemes $X=\text{Spec}(R)$ with semi-stable reduction to the Galois cohomology of the fundamental group of the geometric generic fibre $π_1(X_{\bar{K}})$ with coefficients in a Fontaine ring constructed from $R$. This is based on Faltings' theory of almost étale extensions.
We discuss the structure of integral etale motivic cohomology groups of smooth and projective schemes over algebraically closed fields, finite fields, local fields, and arithmetic schemes.
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic etale cohomology groups of rigid spaces over a local field. We prove that the alternating sum of the traces of the action is an integer and is independent of l when either the rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. We modify the argument of T. Saito to prove a result on l-independence for nearby cycle cohomology, which leads to our l-independence result for smooth rigid spaces. In the general case, we use the finiteness theorem of R. Huber, which requires the restriction on the c…
The classical Chevalley-Weil theorem asserts that for an étale covering of projective varieties over a number field K, the discriminant of the field of definition of the fiber over a K-rational point is uniformly bounded. We obtain a fully explicit version of this theorem in dimension 1.
We investigate the action of the Weil group on the compactly supported l-adic cohomology groups of rigid spaces over local fields. We prove that every eigenvalue of the action is a Weil number when either a rigid space is smooth or the characteristic of the base field is equal to 0. Since a smooth rigid space is locally isomorphic to the Raynaud generic fiber of an algebraizable formal scheme, we can use the techniques of alterations and monodromy spectral sequences in the smooth case. In the general case, we use the continuity theorem of Huber, which requires the restriction on the characteri…
Let $K$ be a complete discrete valuation field whose residue field is perfect and of positive characteristic, let $X$ be a connected, proper scheme over $\mathcal{O}_K$, and let $U$ be the complement in $X$ of a divisor with simple normal crossings. Assume that the pair $(X,U)$ is strictly semi-stable over $\mathcal{O}_K$ of relative dimension one and $K$ is of equal characteristic. We prove that, for any smooth $\ell$-adic sheaf $\mathscr{G}$ on $U$ of rank one, at most tamely ramified on the generic fiber, if the ramification of $\mathscr{G}$ is bounded by $t+$ for the logarithmic upper rami…
Let $(\mathsf{G},\mathsf{X})$ be a Shimura datum of Hodge type. Let $p$ be an odd prime such that $\mathsf{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$ splits after a tamely ramified extension and $p\nmid |π_1(\mathsf{G}^{\rm der})|$. Under some mild additional assumptions that are satisfied if the associated Shimura variety is proper and $\mathsf{G}_{\mathbb{Q}_p}$ is either unramified or residually split, we prove the generalisation of Mantovan's formula for the $l$-adic cohomology of the associated Shimura variety. On the way we derive some new results about the geometry of the Newton stratification of the reduction…
We show the Gersten's conjecture for étale cohomology over two dimensional henselian regular local rings without assuming equi-characteristic. As application, we obtain the local-global principle for Galois cohomology over mixed characteristic two-dimensional henselian local rings.
We compute the p-torsion and p-adic etale cohomologies with compact support of period domains over local fields in the case of basic isocrystals for quasi-split reductive groups. For the p-torsion case, we follow the method used by Orlik in his computations of the l-torsion etale cohomology using as a key new ingredient the computation of Ext groups between mod p generalized Steinberg representations of p-adic groups. For the p-adic case, we don't use Huber's definition of etale cohomology with compact support as Orlik did since it seems to give spaces that are much too big; instead we use con…
We determine the $\ell$-adic étale cohomology and the eigenvalues of the geometric Frobenius for the moduli stack $\mathcal{L}_{1,12n} := \mathrm{Hom}_{n}(\mathbb{P}^1, \overline{\mathcal{M}}_{1,1})$ of stable elliptic fibrations over $\mathbb{P}^{1}$ with $12n$ nodal singular fibers and a marked Weierstrass section over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q$ with $\mathrm{char}(\overline{\mathbb{F}}_q) \neq 2,3$.
We construct an intermediate cohmology between motivic cohomology and Weil-etale cohomology. Using this, the Bass conjecture on finite generation of motivic cohomology, and the Beilinson-Tate on the finite generation of Weil-etale cohomology are related.
Étale cohomology with non-invertible coefficients has some unpleasant properties, e.g., it is not A^1-homotopy invariant and for constructible coefficients the expected finiteness properties do not hold. In this paper we introduce the `tame site' which is slightly coarser than the étale site. Tame cohomology coincides with étale cohomology for invertible coefficients but is better behaved in the general case. The fundamental group of the tame site is the (curve-)tame fundamental group of Wiesend and Kerz/Schmidt. The higher tame homotopy groups hopefully have a better behaviour than the higher…
We give a new proof of Ohta's Lambda-adic Eichler-Shimura isomorphism using p-adic Hodge theory and the results of Bloch-Kato and Hyodo on p-adic etale cohomology.
Lichtenbaum conjectured the existence of a Weil-étale cohomology in order to describe the vanishing order and the special value of the Zeta function of an arithmetic scheme $\mathcal{X}$ at $s=0$ in terms of Euler-Poincaré characteristics. Assuming the (conjectured) finite generation of some étale motivic cohomology groups we construct such a cohomology theory for regular schemes proper over $\mathrm{Spec}(\mathbb{Z})$. In particular, we obtain (unconditionally) the right Weil-étale cohomology for geometrically cellular schemes over number rings. We state a conjecture expressing the vanishing …
We show that the mod p cohomology of a smooth projective variety with semistable reduction over K, a finite extension of Qp, embeds into the reduction modulo p of a semistable Galois representation with Hodge-Tate weights in the expected range (at least after semisimplifying, in the case of the cohomological degree > 1). We prove refinements with descent data, and we apply these results to the cohomology of unitary Shimura varieties, deducing vanishing results and applications to the weight part of Serre's conjecture.
In this follow-up paper we show that smooth Hodge-proper stacks over $\mathcal O_K$ are $\mathbb Q_p$-locally acyclic: namely the natural map between étale $\mathbb Q_p$-cohomology of the algebraic and Raynaud generic fibers is an equivalence. This establishes the $\mathbb Q_p$-case of general conjectures made in our previous work. As a corollary, we get that if a smooth Artin stack over $K$ has a smooth Hodge-proper model over $\mathcal O_K$, its $\mathbb Q_p$-étale cohomology is a crystalline Galois representation. We then also establish a truncated version of the above results in more gener…
A. Sikora has shown results which confirm the analogy between number fields and 3-manifolds. However, he has given proofs of his results which are very different in the arithmetic and in the topological case. In this paper, we show how to provide a unified approach to the results in the two cases. For this we introduce an equivariant cohomology which satisfies a localization theorem. In particular, we obtain a satisfactory explanation for the coincidences between Sikora's formulas which leads us to clarify and to extend the dictionary of arithmetic topology.
