A. Weil identified a 2-dimensional space of rational classes of Hodge type (n,n) in the middle cohomology of every 2n-dimensional abelian variety with a suitable complex multiplication by an imaginary quadratic number field. These abelian varieties are said to be of Weil type and these Hodge classes are known as Weil classes. We prove that the Weil classes are algebraic for all abelian sixfold of Weil type of discriminant -1, for all imaginary quadratic number fields. The algebraicity of the Weil classes follows for all abelian fourfolds of Weil type (for all discriminants and all imaginary quadratic number fields), by a degeneration argument of C. Schoen. The Hodge Conjecture for abelian fourfolds is known to follow from the above result.
Let S be a smooth cubic surface over a field K. It is well-known that new K-rational points may be obtained from old ones by secant and tangent constructions. A Mordell-Weil generating set is a subset B of S(K) of minimal cardinality which generates S(K) via successive secant and tangent constructions. Let r(S,K) be the cardinality of such a Mordell-Weil generating set. Manin posed what is known as the Mordell-Weil problem for cubic surfaces: if K is finitely generated over its prime subfield then r(S,K) is finite. In this paper, we prove a special case of this conjecture. Namely, if S contain…
We compare the asymptotic grows of the number of rational points on modular varieties of D-elliptic sheaves over finite fields to the grows of their Betti numbers as the degree of the level tends to infinity. This is a generalization to higher dimensions of a well-known result for modular curves. As a consequence of the main result, we also produce a new asymptotically optimal sequence of curves.
We shall show that $q$-semipositivity of the vector bundle $E$ over a Kähler total space $\mathcal X$ implies the Griffiths-semipositivity of the $q$-th direct image of $\mathcal O(K_{\mathcal X/B}\otimes E)$. As an application, we shall give a negative-curvature criterion for the generalized Weil-Petersson metric on the base manifold.
We consider normal projective n-dimensional varieties X whose anticanonical divisor class -K is ample and where every Weil divisor is a rational multiple of K. The index i is the largest integer such that K/i exists as a Weil divisor. We show (i) if X has log-terminal singularities, and in addition 1-forms on the smooth part of X are holomorphic on a resolution, then (-K)^n =< (max(in,n+1))^n; (ii) if the tangent sheaf of X is semistable, then (-K)^n =<(2n)^n. The proof is based on some elementary but possibly surprising slope estimates on sheaves of differential operators on plurianticanonica…
We calculate Betti numbers of the framed moduli space of instantons on $\hat{{\bf C}^2/{\bf Z}_2}$, under the assumption that the corresponding torsion free sheaves $E$ have vanishing properties ($Hom(E,E(-l_\infty))=Ext^2(E,E(-l_\infty))=0$). Moreover we derive the generating function of Betti numbers and obtain closed formulas. On the other hand, we derive a universal relation between the generating function of Betti numbers of the moduli spaces of stable sheaves on $X$ with an $A_1$-singularity and that on $\hat{X}$ blow-uped at the singularity, by using Weil conjecture. We call this the $O…
We would like to construct a new Grothendieck topology for arithmetic schemes, whose cohomology groups associated with motivic complexes of sheaves are finitely generated and whose Euler characteristics are related to special values of zeta-functions. In this paper we construct this topology for rings of algebraic integers and show that the cohomology of the constant sheaf Z is related to the behavior of zeta-functions at s = 0.
Lichtenbaum has conjectured the existence of a Grothendieck topology for an arithmetic scheme $X$ such that the Euler characteristic of the cohomology groups of the constant sheaf $\mathbb{Z}$ with compact support at infinity gives, up to sign, the leading term of the zeta-function $ζ_X(s)$ at $s=0$. In this paper we consider the category of sheaves $\bar{X}_L$ on this conjectural site for $X=Spec(\mathcal{O}_F)$ the spectrum of a number ring. We show that $\bar{X}_L$ has, under natural topological assumptions, a well defined fundamental group whose abelianization is isomorphic, as a topologic…
We construct the Weil-étale cohomology and Euler characteristics for a subclass of the class of $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaves on the spectrum of the ring of integers of a totally imaginary number field. Then we show that the special value of an Artin L-function of toric type at zero is given by the Weil-étale Euler characteristic of an appropriate $\mathbb{Z}$-constructible sheaf up to signs. As applications of our result, we will derive some classical formulas of special values of L-functions of tori and their class numbers.
In this paper we construct a projective action of certain arithmetic group on the derived category of coherent sheaves on an abelian scheme $A$, which is analogous to Weil representation of the symplectic group. More precisely, the arithmetic group in question is a congruence subgroup in the group of "symplectic" automorphisms of $A\times\hat{A}$ where $\hat{A}$ is the dual abelian scheme. The "projectivity" of this action refers to shifts in the derived category and tensorings with line bundles pulled from the base. In particular, if $A$ is an abelian scheme over $S$ equipped with an ample li…
We show that some types for supercuspidal representations of tamely ramified $p$-adic groups that appear in Jiu-Kang Yu's work are geometrizable. To do so, we define a function-sheaf dictionary for one-dimensional characters of arbitrary smooth group schemes over finite fields. In previous work we considered the case of commutative smooth group schemes and found that the standard definition of character sheaves produced a dictionary with a nontrivial kernel. In this paper we give a modification of the category of character sheaves that remedies this defect, and is also extensible to non-commut…
Using the concept of a cohesive module defined by Block, we use the theory of superconnections in the sense of Quillen to construct natural superconnections on Hermitian cohesive modules. By the Chern-Weil construction, we obtain characteristic classes with values in Bott-Chern cohomology which refines the usual deRham cohomology. The main result of this paper shows that such characteristic classes are independent of the Hermitian metric and only dependent on the homotopy class of the cohesive module in the homotopy category. This extends the Bott-Chern cohomology to the bounded derived catego…
